During a sermon a few weeks ago I asked you to pray that God would lead you to someone who needed a word, a gesture, of God’s love and kind-ness, and for God to help you to know what to do or say. I also asked that you send me your sto-ries of what happened. Here are three of them. Pastor Scott - I did not actually hear your ser-mon last Sunday but heard during Sunday School that you wanted a "God moment" e-mailed to you if we encountered them this week...I was at a foster care home where one of the individuals on my caseload moved to on Tuesday. I was talking to the woman who had the home before and now her brother and wife have it. Anyway, she had an adorable little granddaughter sitting on her lap (about 15 months old). I was saying how cute she was and what beautiful hair and eyes she had. (She was) one of those little kids you can't keep your eyes off of. Anyway, the woman then proceeded to tell me that the little girl's mother (age 34) has an inoperable brain tumor. She said that she had been through radiation treatments, chemo and is now very weak and things do not look too good....I told her that I would certainly pray for her and her family...The couple also has two older children (a boy and a girl.) I told her that I would ask my church to pray for her also. She handed me a nice card with their picture which I can bring tomorrow. So can you please pray tomorrow for Erin Youngbar and fam-ily. I will have her put on the prayer list next week for the bulletin.

Pastor Scott - Several weeks ago, you preached a sermon and challenged each of us to take note of a time where God brought someone to us. Today, I ran into someone who works in the same organization as I do and I asked her how she has been doing- I was just making small talk. It was definitely a God-thing to bump into her, be-cause I rarely get out of my office. She said that yesterday, she came “this close” to taking a whole bottle of pills, to end her life. I had an opening in my schedule and was able to pull her into my office and talk with her. And here’s one that happened to me. About two weeks ago I’m in the parking lot of Aldi’s loading my haul of groceries into the trunk of my car. Another car parks next to mine and two women get out. One of them looks at me and says, “You look just like my former pastor.” I say, “Well, that’s funny because I AM a pastor.” We banter for a minute and then she says she really misses her pastor and she’s really needed one lately. I ask what’s going on and she tells me she recently had an MRI and her oncologist suspects her cancer has returned, this time in her lungs. She is going in for a lung biopsy the next day. I lis-ten and tell her I’m sorry for what she’s going through and am about to tell her I’ll pray for her when I instead say, “How about we pray about this right now?” We grab hands and pray together in the parking lot for her healing and they go into Aldi’s and I head home. Before we parted I gave her my card and asked her to let me know how she’s doing. Sunday night, I get a phone call

ac I just wanted to say a BIG THANK YOU TO OUR CPC CHURCH FAMILY!! It meant so much to us that people brought meals, came to visit, prayed, and sent cards during my surgery in Hershey and my rehab at Shook. Since we don't have any imme-diate family in this area of the country our Church Family means more to us than I can put into words! Scott was spoiled with wonderful meals while I was at Shook and I got to taste some of them when I got home:) Thank you to Pastor Scott for coming up to Hershey to visit and pray with me while I was in the hospital. It has been a long recovery and this Thursday October 17th I get the cast off and see where I go from there. I've been home bound for 3 weeks I can go to church and to the Dr. So I also appreciate the phone calls and beautiful flowers given to me from the Deacons. I got a beautiful bouquet yesterday that is in my living room so I can see it all the time! Thank you All again In Christ's Love, Kari and Scott Wiley

Dorothy Buchwalter’s family would like to thank the church members for the many cards, consoling, up-lifting words and prayers offered by so many. The outpouring of love is surely a legacy of honor for our dear mother.

Throughout these past months God has taken us on quite a journey of FAITH from the time we first realized that John had a bad aortic heart valve that we had hoped could be replaced under a new research procedure called TAVI until his death September 19. 2013. During this time our family has seen and experienced an amazing out-pouring of God’s love which has overwhelmed us, sustained and supported us, but at the same time has humbled us. We want to say a big THANK YOU to Pastor Scott for his many visits, prayers, and concern for John and me at home, at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, MD, at Harrisburg Hospital, and at Shook Home. The night before John’s death both Linda Igou and Brenda Black were a huge support for us by coming to Chambersburg Hospital ER and being with us there into the wee hours of the morning as we waited with John, not knowing what was going to happen next. Thank you both for your prayers and support that night and in the days that fol-lowed. Although we would have wished for John to be with us longer and prayed for the TAVI to become a cure for his problems, God knew best and took him on September 19 to be with HIM. I want to thank Pastor Scott, the choir, Mark King, organist, and Dani Kardisco, soloist and choir director for doing a superb job with the ser-vice witnessing to the Resurrection and celebrat-ing the life of John Wingert . The supportive con-gregation was very much appreciated at the ser-vice. Carolyn Walters and the ladies in the kitchen did a fantastic job of preparing and serving the meal after the funeral service. THANK YOU to each one who helped in any way with the meal and/or brought desserts, too. My gratitude goes to the whole staff who has supported me through all this as well, and filled in for me when I needed to be with John. Thank you, too, Valerie Merriman for playing for the worship service the Sunday after John’s death. Another huge thank you goes to the entire con-gregation for the many prayers, cards, flowers, and outpouring of God’s LOVE. I will remember this forever. We all miss John very much but look forward to the time when we shall see him again. May God continue to bless others through His Servants at Central as He has blessed our family. that I almost don’t answer because I don’t recognize the number - and it’s the woman from the Aldi’s parking lot. She called to tell me her biopsy was negative, there is no cancer, and she is grateful that I stopped and prayed with her. I share these to remind us all to be alert for these “God-moments.” So many people are hurting and desperate for a word or gesture of God’s love - and God uses ordinary people like us to touch other people with his love and mercy. What a privilege!

Youth groups and Sunday School classes are going great! We are so grateful to have Scott and Madeline Wilson teaching our Middler Sunday School class! You guys are great! Thanks also to our whole Central family for the constant and continuous love and support for the young adults of our church! We love you back!

Our Fall retreat on October 18th-19th was fast and WONDERFUL!!! We started at the CASH Trojan Home Game, where we got to cheer on our own Sarah Finley as one of the senior band members! Good job, Sarah!! Then, we traveled 1.5 hours over the mountains to the Lake Raystown area and spent 20 hours in deep spiritual insight, rekindling,

fellowship, and worship! Make sure to ask one of the youth about our new worship band!! HUUUUGGGEEEE thank you to the Miller Fam-ily for sharing their lovely home in James Creek with us for the weekend! Also, humongous thanks to Nick Adams, Kristen Adams, and Olivia Mullen for donating their time and efforts to spend with the youth!!! Servants’ hearts are hearts like Jesus Christ! Coming up: Mentor/Mentee night at youth group on November 3rd! It’s going to be a roaring good time!!! Middler LOCK-OUT on November 8th! JOY CHILDREN’S VILLAGE

When it opened in 2011, Joy Chil-dren’s Home was an orphanage, hous-ing 18 orphans under the care of three women trained to be their “mothers”. The children had been orphaned by AIDS, or rescued from neglect, abuse or abandonment. Two years and major renovations later, the word “orphanage” is no longer appropriate. It is now a village, made up of four families with 33 chil-dren, living separately in their own condominiums, buying their own gro-ceries, cooking their own meals, keep-ing their own budgets. The children in these families live together as brothers and sisters, doing chores and home-work together under the watchful eye of a loving mother. Additional condominiums have been built, and soon this village will consist of seven families, all brought together through the grace of a loving and merciful Father. We at Central Presbyterian Church are privileged to support to the Joy Children’s Village as part of the 145th Anniversary capital campaign.

Central will be ringing Bells again this year for the Salvation Army. We will be ringing at the Butcher Shoppe on Tuesday Dec 10 from 11 am to 7 pm. This is a great location to ring because you will be inside! There is a sign up sheet on the Mission bulletin board across from the office. We need 2 ringers per hour so please sign up for 1 or 2 hour shifts. If you have any questions please call Bill McKelvie at 477-2132. A little bit of time will go a long way for those less fortunate than we are.

Once again this year Central will be providing meals to the Cold Weather Drop In Shelter. We have committed to the first and third Friday's beginning in December. Meals, to include bever-ages must be delivered at 7:00 to the shelter. The shelter will provide all utensils and dishes. All you have to do is deliver the meal. You can stay and visit for a while if you like. There is a sign up sheet on the Mission bulletin board across from the office. The shel-ter is located at 195 Loudon Street. This is a wonderful opportunity to serve our community. We need 2 volunteer families per date. Partner with another family to divide the work. CHANGES THIS YEAR! NEW: Central Presbyterian Church is planning to participate in the annual Cham-bersburg Christmas Parade to be held on Saturday, November 23, 2013. In lieu of the usual meal the Children’s Ministry organizes ahead of the Parade, our time and energy will be focused on helping prepare and participating in Centrals entry.

CONGREGATIONAL MEETING Sunday, November 17th 11:45AM, Sanctuary The Session has called a Congregational Meeting on Sunday November 17, following the 10:45 worship service. This is the Annual Meeting (Part 1) and the purpose is to: (1) receive the report of the 2013 Nominating Committee, (2) elect new church officers, (3) elect the congregational at-large members of the 2014 Nominating Committee, and (4) approve the pastoral terms of call for 2014.

SESSION ACTIONS OCTOBER 2013

Session took the following actions at its October meeting. If you have any questions, please talk to one of the Elders: Brenda Black, Bill Daniels, Tom Diehl, Jean Gisriel, Linda Igou, Pat McNamee, Ann Miller, Jim Sharp, Karl Shreiner, Luella Smith, Doug Vanderau, Don Weber, or Kathryn Finley, Clerk. • Removed Al Poppen from Central’s membership at his request. • Restored Donna Oberholzer to Central’s active membership roll. • Approved Liz Martin’s request to use Central Church for the Children’s Aid Society’s foster parent training classes. The classes will be held from November 7 to February 6. • Approved the request to have Ron Snyder preach on Sunday November 10. Elected Tom Diehl to serve as Chair of the Mission Committee. He replaces Susan Keefer, who is stepping down.

From the Finance Committee: Central was blessed with a supplementary gift from the estate of Fred Aldinger, a long time member who died in 2006. Fred was a gifted pianist and all around nice guy. A few weeks ago we received a letter from attorney Joel Zullinger informing us that when Fred’s estate was settled in 2006 there was an undiscovered asset. He was the beneficiary of an annuity owned by his sister who had died in 1999. Somehow it just came to light recently and Central received a 25% share which amounted to $7,406.76. The Finance Committee placed those funds in the McAlister Fund which benefits the music program of Central in view of Fred’s personal great interest in music throughout his life. All of us need to realize what a blessing a final bequest is to our church. The next time you are reviewing your will with your attorney why not be sure that your church is included to receive a gift from your estate. MEN’s BIBLE STUDY ~ November 2 & 16 Group meets at 7:00a.m. the first and third Saturday of each month at the Texas Lunch on Lincoln Way West downtown Chambersburg. ITEMS ALWAYS NEEDED FOR OUR MILITARY CARE PACKAGES: In the coming months we will collect magazines, music CD’s, DVD’s, hard candies, snack crackers, home-baked cookies, and books for our military men and women. If you would like to contrib-ute, please place items in the cardboard box under the church mailboxes, 1st floor, which is located near the Pastor’s office. Monetary donations are also appreciated. Each month 3 boxes will be sent on the 3rd Sunday. If you have any questions, you can contact Sue Stahl by calling the

ATTENTION CRAFTERS A member of Central has an offer for somebody involved in crafts or who might enjoy taking that step of faith. Four complete binders of ideas, pictures, patterns, etc of Christmas crafts. One binder is pictures only to use as ideas and to paint from. You would need to make a drawing for a pattern and get your own wooden pieces cut. Another offer from the same member is a binder full of some of Matthew Richardson’s sermons. All binders have the items in protective covers. You are welcome to have any of these. Please call the church office if you are interested.

THANKSGIVING BASKETS Last year Central Presbyterian Church provided food in the form of Thanksgiving Baskets to 72 families = 317 people. This year, we continue this ministry and on Monday, November 25 we will hand out baskets once again. If you would like to contribute a monetary donation toward this ministry, you can mail it to: Central Presbyterian Church, 40 Lincoln Way West, Chambersburg PA 17201, or use the small brown envelopes marked “Thanksgiving Baskets” that are in the Sanc-tuary pews. Central’s Book Club meets again Wednesday, Nov. 6th at 7:00 PM in the Church Parlor. We’ll continue our dis-cussion of the book Plain Secrets: An Outsider Among the Amish. Please bring your ideas for the next book to read and discuss.



HABITAT FOR HUMANITY FRANKLIN COUNTY

Habitat for Humanity in Franklin County (HFHFC) is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International and is a hands-on, ecumenical Christian housing ministry whose objective is to eliminate substandard housing in Franklin County by providing affordable homes to low in-come families. Selected families partner while their dwelling is being built by putting in hundreds of hours of their own labor. The Franklin County Habitat Chapter began in January 1993, and over the years has constructed or remodeled thirty homes for county residents. The HFHFC has set an ambitious goal of constructing two houses per year. Their new office is located at 1331 South 7th Street close to the Wayne Ave. Patriot Federal Credit Union. Central Presbyterian has supported Habitat projects consistently over the years and now hopes to reach a new goal of support during the next two years. A few years ago, we supported the cost of a new dwelling on Candlestick Court , not only financially, but also supply-ing labor by many church members to complete the house for the cho-sen family by occupancy before Christmas. We have also had inter-ested church members supply volunteer work on the construction pro-jects of three other Habitat homes the past several years in our Cham-bersburg community. Habitat has been part of our regular Mission Budget over the last 10 years, receiving a yearly donation from us to support their operating budget. Our Church has recently identified Habitat as a special support need in the newly launched 145th Anniversary Capital Campaign Fund to take place over the next two years. This special offering will help Habitat pay for sewer connections needed for four newly purchased lots located off Kline Road. This area will be the site for more new Habitat houses. As these projects develop over the upcoming years, volunteers are always invited to offer hands-on volunteer hours.
