Central Oregon Dental Society News The President’s Message Dr. Brad Hester The response to the May meeting featuring our speaker Dr. Steven Persichetti has been tremendous. We were able to secure additional space at The Riverhouse so that we can accommodate everyone who requested seats. It should be a great presentation. The new website work is on track and should be online in a few weeks. The site will include some new features and will make communicating with the membership easier and more efficient. There are a couple of bills in the legislature that are of interest to dentistry. Senate Bill 672 assures that the newly created Dental Director position is established as a permanent position. We were one of only 3 states that did not have a State Director for Dentistry. This position is important from many standpoints, not the least of which is federal funding that our state currently is not eligible to receive. The Dental Director will allow our state to receive more federal dollars and will allocate the resources available for dentistry more effectively. House Bill 2972 establishes a grade school screening program for dental needs similar to what is currently done with vision and hearing. Both of these bills are good for dentistry. The ODA supports both and I would encourage you to speak with your State Representative and Senator to encourage their support.

Please Join Volunteers in Medicine as a Dental Volunteer. Volunteers in Medicine serves the working poor in Central Oregon who are unable to benefit from the Affordable Care Act. Qualifying patients have been financially screened and fall below the 200% poverty level. More than 159 medical volunteers donate time in the clinic. In addition, over 400 providers see patients in their own clinics. Volunteers in Medicine has seen an increasing demand for dental services. On site dental hygiene has been a nice addition at VIM. The Kemple Clinic is available to see those under the age of 25. Patients with urgent dental needs are put on a list to be seen at COCC or at one of three dental offices which donate their services. “Thank you” to Bend Family Dentistry, Murtaugh Dental and Pure Care Dental for your support. Presently, the demand for dentistry exceeds the capacity of VIM’s current resources. Please consider donating care. VIM’s referral coordinator, Salome Chauncey, works to make the appointment process as smooth as possible. Contact Medical Directors, Dr. Jim Ritzenthaler or Dr. Bob Hakala to learn how YOU can help. 541-585-9017 [email protected] Thank you for your consideration!

COCC Friday Dental Clinic for Low Income Patients Kristi Hammerquist, CDA, COCC Dental Assiting Program The COCC Dental Assisting Program has partnered together with Deschutes County Health Services and are once again offering our Friday Dental Clinic to the low-income patients. We are in need of dentists to help out, by volunteering in one of our Friday Clinics. Deschutes County Health Services is now offering screening for eligible adult clients (18 years and older). We will provide patients with x-rays, fillings and extractions, with some prophys offered as we have hygienists volunteer. Our clinics will be on Friday mornings from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. You may be surprised by the number of people that are in dire need of dental work, are low income, and have nowhere else to turn. The Bend dental community has been very generous with their volunteer time and I know a lot of you are seeing patients in your offices. By working in our clinic here at COCC you are able to earn 6 CE hours for your volunteer community service. And I think you will find the patients are very grateful. We, and our students are also very appreciative of your time! Our dates for clinics are:

• April 17th and April 24 • May 1st and May 15th • June 5th

Please give me a call or email as soon as possible and let me know if you can help and what date will work for you.

BRIGHTER SMILES CAMPAIGN –MAY- JUNE: In the past two months we have delivered reminder cards to hygienists in dental offices that intend to participate this year. It is time to advise patients of this upcoming opportunity NOW! We will provide you with more information in the coming months, with lots of advertising and promotion, particularly with weddings, graduations and family reunions being planned. Our goal is to get all dentists in Central Oregon to participate, where whitening services are appropriate. Please contact us NOW to participate – we will bring whitening product to your office as well as posters in the coming weeks. We will publically recognize the participating dentists in the next few CODS newsletters and several advertisements in the Bend Bulletin. The following list reflects participating dentist offices in 2014 Campaign. Those of you who regularly participate are asked to contact other dentists who do not participate and encourage them to join the Brighter Smiles Campaign in May and June. We need to grow this list significantly since that is the best way to increase the number of patients taking advantage of the reduced price whitening services in Central Oregon.

Common Sense, Practical, Practice Management Advice for Dental Professionals

The All-Knowing, All-Seeing, GURU of Everything Dental & Mental

Dear Dr. Rupert (Please submit your questions, comments or disgruntled remarks to [email protected])

Dear Dr. Rupert,

There are so many different burs that I get confused about which ones I should have in my armamentarium of burs?  Can you give me a listing if your favorite burs?

Signed, Favorite Burs

- - - - - -

Dear Favorite Burs,

Page 11: CENTRAL OREGON DENTAL NEWSLETTER · dentists in Central Oregon to participate, where whitening services are appropriate. Please contact us NOW to participate – we will bring whitening

As you know, Dr. Rupert believes that the key to success if to keep life simple.  The more burs, the more staff, the more cements, the more stuff … the more complicated and crazy your life.  For that reason, I have two favorite burs that I use for every procedure in order to keep things simple.

The amazing thing is that I have had the same two burs since my Dental School issue over 20 years ago!  I use my 170 carbide and diamond chamfer burs for everything.  They’re a little black on the tip, and not all that sharp, but with a little extra elbow grease and effort … they’re still cutting!

A couple of years ago, one of the Sales Reps gave me a few new burs to try, but I didn’t like how quickly they cut through the tooth and old restorations and threw them away and went back to my old burs.  It does take me a few extra minutes to prepare the tooth with my dull burs, but I love the smell and the smoke adds a little pizzazz to the appointment and the patients do not move and stay open very wide when there’s smoke coming out of their mouth!

It also makes life simple on my Dental Assistants.  They don’t have to set up different burs for different procedures, and I always have what I want on the tray.  Keep things simple and you’ll be much happier.

Glad I could help,

Dr. Rupert

Dear Dr. Rupert,

Is there a way to improve our office production during the Lunch Hour?

Signed, Lunch Hour Production                                                                                                         - - - - - -

Dear Lunch Hour Production,

You have crossed the line!  The Lunch Hour is a sacred time and you must NOT think of it as extra production time.  You must not cheapen the Lunch Hour by trying to make an extra dollar during it.

In my younger days, I would work through the lunch hour and squeeze emergency patients in that time slot; but time has made me wiser and I no longer let anything interfere with my time to sit and rest for a few minutes.

Working through the lunch hour takes away the other Staff members time to eat, check their Facebook pages, play Candy Crush, text their friends, read the newest issue of People magazine from the Waiting Room, gossip, brag about or make fun of their significant others, show pictures of their kids or grandkids, and a host of other things that they would do during the time they’re supposed to be focused on patients, if they weren’t getting a lunch hour.

I personally disappear into my office and take a short nap during the lunch hour, unless somebody has made a batch of cookies or something.  Sometimes, I’ll watch ESPN highlights on my computer and at other times I’ll run over and have lunch with one of my kids at their school.

Don’t you dare use the Lunch Hour for anything other than unproductive, but very restful things.  You and your staff all need a break.

Glad I could help,                                                                                                                                                                               Dr. Rupert
