• Address psychosocial risk factors for developing long-term disability amongst patients with chronic pain.

This is an RACGP Active Learning Module (ALM) designed to provide GPs with a comprehensive update on chronic pain with a strong focus on applying best practice in the management of moderate to severe chronic non-cancer pain in primary care.

Dr John PrickettSpecialist in Anaesthesia with a special interest in Pain ManagementNorthern Integrated Pain Management
Dr Prickett has an anaesthetics background in the UK and Ireland. Since attaining specialist recognition with the Australian College of Anaesthetists in 2003, he has been involved in public and private practice in anaesthesia in the Newcastle area. In 2008, he commenced a chronic pain management practice at the Hunter Pain Clinic. Then in 2011, he set up with his colleague Dr Simon Tame the multidisciplinary Northern Integrated Pain Management Clinic based in Charlestown, with satellite clinics around the Hunter and on the Central Coast. His interests include early intervention pain management and minimising the impact of the progression from acute pain to the chronic pain state using both pre-emptive and multidisciplinary approaches within an evidence based context.
Dr Sergio Diez AlvarezDirector of Medicine, The Maitland Hospital
Dr Alvarez completed undergraduate and postgraduate training in 2001 in South Africa, where he worked in private practice as a general physician until 2008. After a short time in the UK in perioperative medicine, he immigrated to Australia. Since immigrating to Australia, and working in both Armidale and Coffs Harbour, he has forged a passion for rural health and chronic disease management. In 2013, he took up the position of Director of Clinical Services for the Coffs Clinical Network while continuing to pursue his passion in undergraduate and postgraduate education at the UNSW and UoN where he was a senior lecturer. In 2015 he moved to Newcastle and took up the position of Director of Medicine at The Maitland Hospital. He continues to promote the delivery of excellent medical education and the delivery of high quality, empathic and compassionate care, especially for patients suffering chronic medical conditions including chronic pain.
Dr Mike ShelleyHealth Psychologist, Innervate Pain Management, Newcastle
Dr Shelley has a PhD in health psychology and has 20 years of experience working in chronic pain. He has worked publicly as the Director of Psychology at Queensland Health in Townsville and was the Allied Health Leader at Gold Coast Chronic Pain Services. He has also worked in pain and mood disorder programs at the Mater Private Hospital. Dr Shelley is currently the Service Director for Innervate Pain Management which delivers evidence-based individual and group multidisciplinary chronic pain treatments.
