Bradman Best, a 10 year old

student from St John the Baptist Catholic Primary School Woy Woy, has been selected to represent NSW at the National PSSA Track & Field C h a m p i o n s h i p s in Darwin on September 15-18.

Bradman is representing NSW in two events – the 100m sprint and the 4 x 100m relay.

Bradman’s selection on the NSW team follows his outstanding performance at the All Schools State Championship held in July.

Bradman fi nished second in the 100m sprint, with a time of 14.4 seconds.

He also competed in the long jump, fi nishing ninth.

These inspiring results and national-level recognition come after Bradman’s all-round dedication to sports.

His growing list of sporting achievement includes: ‘player with the most potential’ for 2010 by Woy Woy Roosters Football Club; ‘junior player of the year’ for 2010 by the Peninsula Touch Football Association; and, Gold and Silver medals in beach sprinting and fl ags for Umina Surf Club at State Titles over the past two years.

Bradman Best is a wonderful ambassador for sporting achievement on the Central Coast.

Representing NSW at the previously mentioned championships will be a further opportunity for the Central Coast’s sporting fl ag to fl y high.

However, travelling to Darwin will be an expensive exercise for Bradman and his family.

To assist, St John the Baptist Catholic Primary School will run some fund-raising activities.

Club has stepped in to help by approaching local businesses for sponsorship.

Local resident Matthew Dawson

has recently returned from the Australian U21 National Hockey C h a m p i o n s h i p s held in Perth July 5-16, where he represented the NSW squad.

Dawson, a 17 year old from Killarney Vale, was

the youngest member of the squad, yet out-performed many of his older team mates during the tournament, according to head coach Matthew Smith.

Dawson also placed 2nd in the player’s poll, behind Matthew Willis.

“Matthew’s performances over the championships were well above my expectations as the transition from junior competition to U21s is often

a diffi cult one, yet he showed that he could compete at this level quite comfortably,” said Smith.

“Matthew should be proud of his achievements and I have no doubt, with his willingness to learn, he will be a key part of future representative teams.”

The NSW side was defeated 2 – 1 in the fi nals by the WA squad.

College’s Umina Campus were the Central Coast champions in the junior division of the recent Zone Athletics carnival.

Following this, the Campus will have 27 students representing the zone in the Sydney North

carnival, and will participate in 49 individual events, and 3 relays.

Students participating will be Trent Buhagiar, Wade Hannell, Adam Hanscombe, Nicholas Hynes, Ebony Millgate, Bailey O’Brien, Guy Pearson, Chelsea Pilson, Jordan Ponting, Bruce Terare, Satali Tevi-Fuimaono, Shaniah Tucker, Jasmine Wolfe, and Rachael Wood.

The school also performed very well in the Zone Cross Country event, and as a result, has 8 students moving on to compete at the Sydney North Cross Country.

Students who qualifi ed are Mitchell Wilson, Satali Tevi-Fuimaono, Rachael Wood, Jasmine Wolfe, Shaniah Tucker, Tahlia Boyd, Indigo Verhoeven and Hayley Braddish.

Sporties@Woy Woy will be carrying

the hopes of the Central Coast lawn bowls fraternity when they represent Zone 15 at the State Finals of the Grade 7 Pennants.

This will be contested at Ettalong Memorial Bowling Club in a round-robin on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 July, with the fi nal on Monday 1st August.

As the winners of the Zone 15 No7 Pennant Flag, “Sporties” will be competing in Section 4 against Moree Services, North Sydney

and Dapto bowling clubs to decide the winner of that section, and earn the right to go forward to face the winners of the other three sections, with the ultimate goal of being crowned Bowls NSW State No7 Pennant winners.

With sixteen clubs representing their Zones, all four greens will be utilised at Ettalong to accommodate 192 bowlers and their supporters, so spectators are advised that an early arrival is recommended to secure a good viewing position.

Ettalong Memorial Bowling Club has a proven

track record of staging top quality bowls events with careful planning, experienced staff and great catering facilities.

While “Sporties” are at Ettalong, our other grades will be away competing for a State Flag also, with our Grade 1 at Ballina, Grade 2 at Dubbo, Grade 3 at Dapto, Grade 4 at Rydalmere, Grade 5 at Western Suburbs Leagues and Grade 6 at Gymea.

We know all of our Grades will do the Central Coast proud and we wish them good luck and good bowling and bring home those fl ags.

Club’s newest young r epr esentat i ves , swam a medal winning race in his 50 fl y to snag a silver medal at the Country C h a m p i o n s h i p s held at SOPAC in Homebush on July 9 and 10.

Caleb leads a number of promising young Woy Woy Junior swimmers who are being developed through the Peninsula Leisure Centre’s coaches John Young and Michelle Whytes Young Gun and Top Gun’s program that has been in operation this year.

Other Top Gun swimmers Jasmine Darwin, Olivia McParlane, William Knipe and Lachlan Braddish also

qualifi ed and swam at the country championships that weekend, swimming in individual and relay events and breaking their personal best times doing themselves, their parents and Woy Woy Swim Club proud.

A huge achievement was also gained by 9 yr old Lachlan Braddish, who swam up in the U10s and gained a few Top 10 fi nishes.

11 year olds Ethan Dodds and Myles Bailey swam an exciting race in the 50m backstroke to win silver and bronze.

Ethan also scored himself a bronze medal in the 100m Back.

12 yr old Rachel Wood placed 2nd in the 50, 100 and 200m Freestyle events and placed 3rd in the 100 and 200m Backstroke events.

Rachel also swam the 400m Freestyle event, gaining a Country Record Time for the 12 yr Females by 8 seconds.

All of Woy Woy’s 11 swimmers swam outstanding times and many gained Top Ten fi nishes.

Their next big meet will be at the NSW State Championships in August.

Woy Woy Swim Club’s representative swimmers will also be holding a fund raising BBQ and Raffl e outside of Woolworths in Umina on Saturday July 30 to help raise funds for 4 of its Central Coast Academy Swimmers to partake in part of their Academy program.

The program will take them on a team trip at the end of August to participate in the Victoria State Championships.

“Sporties” to do battle at Ettalong

Kyoshi MMA cage fi ghts is

returning to Wyong after a sellout crowd on April 23, and along with an overwhelming positive response to the night to return, another fi ght night has been booked for August 19.

There will be 20 fi ghters from gyms from all over the

state competing at our local Wyong Leagues Club.

Local gyms include House of Pain, Wyong, Kyoshi MMA, Morisset, Nyshuido, Warners Bay, and many more from Sydney, and Woolongong.

MMA cage fi ghts have been made popular by UFC, and are one of the fastest growing sports in the world today.

Kyoshi MMA is bringing the cage fi ghts to Wyong

with the sanctioning from CSA, (Combat Sports Association), with disciplines from all areas of martial arts, the night is full of hard hitting action.

The Kyoshi fi ght nights are run on Aurora TV every month, and the Wyong event will also be fi lmed for Aurora to be showed in September.

The night is made up with fi ghts, music and the beautiful Kyoshi dancers.

Central Coast Mariners have

added former Newcastle Jets and Sydney FC midfi elder Stuart Musialik to their playing roster for the 2011/12 Hyundai A-League campaign.

A key member of Graham Arnold’s 2008 Qantas U23 team that competed at the Beijing Olympics, Musialik adds further depth to the Yellow and Navy’s playing stocks heading into season seven of the competition.

Despite having well over 100 Hyundai A-League appearances and two Grand Final wins under his belt, Musialik, who usually occupies a place in defensive midfi eld, knows he will have to knuckle down if he’s to earn a place in the Mariners starting side.

“Arnie is a top coach who I know well, and I’ve always had a good relationship with him,” Musialik said.

“In saying that, he has made it very clear I’ve got to come to the club and work my way in to the fi rst eleven.

“He’s not going to give me any favours, and I’m not looking for any.

“It’s a challenge I’m really looking forward to.”

The opportunity to link with his former mentor on the international stage proved to be one of the key ingredients in the deal that sealed Musalik’s move to the Mariners.

On the cusp of a cap with the Qantas Socceroos when working with Arnold, Musialik said he hopes his shift to the Central Coast will take his play back to the standard it peaked at just a few seasons ago.

“I play the type of football Arnie likes to coach, which was a key factor in why I chose to come to the Mariners,” he said.

“When I was working with Arnie with the Olyroos and Gary van Egmond at Newcastle, that was when I was playing my best football.

“In the last couple of years at Sydney I’ve shot off the radar,” he continued.

“The challenge for me here is to get back to the level I was at.”

Arnold said the addition of Musialik added increased options in midfi eld, and a host of experience to the playing group.

“By any reckoning, Stuart brings a lot of A-League experience to the club.

“He’s already won two Championships, one with Newcastle and one with

Sydney, so he adds a lot of know-how,” Arnold said.

“He was a key part of my team in Beijing in 2008, and I think he will fi t in very well with the culture here at the Mariners and with the playing group.”

Musialik’s initial contract ties him to the Yellow and Navy until the end of the 2012 Asian Champion’s League group stage.

Six teams of four players will carry

the hopes of Bowls Central Coast/Zone 15 to Port Macquarie on the weekend of Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 August in an attempt to wrest the Pat Geary Memorial Shield from 2009 and 2010 winners Zone 2 (Newcastle) who have won this yearly event an impressive

eight times since 1999.

“This is the strongest Pat Geary side entered over the past couple of years” said Zone 15 Chairman of Selectors Ray Vetter, and with up-and-coming young stars such as Harley McDonald and Zac Robertson in the same side as Aron Sherriff, Tony Shoebridge, Peter Freestone, John Roberts, in fact all bowlers selected are worthy and talented ambassadors for the Central Coast and are sure to

give the other Zones stiff competition.

The Pat Geary Memorial Shield is a prestige round robin sides tournament played between the neighbouring Zones of Newcastle (Zone 2), Hunter/Manning (Zone 6), Mid North Coast (Zone 14) and the Central Coast (Zone 15), who won it in 2002 and 2003.

Named after William Patrick Geary, who devoted all his free time to bowls administration at Sawtell Bowling Club where he was Secretary and Bowls Secretary before moving to West Coffs Bowling Club and again performed those duties at Coffs where he eventually becoming President.

He was also a club coach and umpire as well as hosting a popular bowls programme on local radio station 2CHY.

When the four Zones decided to conduct an annual tournament as a forerunner to the State Inter-Zone Sides Championships held in September each year, it was fi tting that it be named after such an active and dedicated Bowls Administrator as Pat Geary.

Women’s Bowling Club held their Annual Pelican Pairs Competition on Monday 18 and Wednesday 20 July.

The club had three full greens in use, seeing 80 competitors, all very sharp and keen to win.

Unfortunately, the club only managed to get one full day in before the weather closed in on the Tuesday

night with great gusto, bringing strong winds and rain to stop the play before the last day could even begin.

Thankfully, the Monday was a very pleasant, sunny day and the club managed some great scores, enough to select the winners, who publicity offi cer Pat Thornton congratulated sincerely.

together with Central Coast Football (CCF) have penned an historic agreement that will help bolster the Mariners playing stocks for generations to come.

In an Australian football fi rst, the Heads of Agreement signed this morning ensure that from October 1 this year, CCF’s representative Youth League programs will be integrated into and form a key component of the Mariners ambitious Academy initiatives.

Under the Central Coast Mariners brand, the program will be the sole elite football Academy in the region, providing high-level training and playing opportunities to both male and female footballers.

Indeed, in its initial stages the Academy will consist of U11 to U18 male teams, and U12 to senior female sides competing at the highest level permitted by Football New South Wales.

Central Coast Mariners Chairman, Mr Peter Turnbull, today hailed the partnership as yet another signifi cant milestone in the clubs progression.

“I congratulate the CCF Board on their vision and foresight in developing this initiative with us,” Turnbull said.

“This is another commitment by the Mariners in fostering and developing youth talent to provide youngsters with a clear pathway to develop their skills and hopefully achieve a career in the sport.

“With four players in the

Qantas Young Socceroos squad for the 2011 FIFA U20 World Cup, and the captain of the Qantas U23s in our Hyundai A-League ranks, we are ideally placed to undertake this next era of youth development.

“In fact, we will be the only Hyundai A-League club that has its own representative Youth League teams for both males and females, and I believe this is further testament to our commitment to community involvement which we have made a conscious effort in further enhancing this year.”

Under the terms of the agreement, CCF will provide the budding Mariners with access to Pluim Park, Lisarow for all representative games.

Additionally, access to Jubilee Oval, Long Jetty and Leagues Club Park, Gosford for all of the Academy’s training and playing requirements will be supplied.

In return, the agreement is underpinned by the Mariners guarantee that 80 per cent of all players in the representative programs will be Central Coast residents, ensuring that a transparent development pathway from the junior to the elite level of football in the region is created.

According to CCF Chairman, Mr Darren Sprod, the agreement is a mutually benefi cial one.

“This agreement provides a clear pathway for the development of elite youth players on the Coast, which follows the national curriculum sponsored by both Football New South Wales and FFA,” Sprod said.

“Elite players of the region will no longer be confused

over which path to take. “The agreement allows

CCF to concentrate its resources on community football and our 23 member clubs, while ensuring we support the Mariners in developing the elite footballers of the future.

“CCF wants to ensure we give the youth of the Central Coast every opportunity to develop, and this agreement with the Mariners ensures we remain strategically aligned with the development of the regions elite footballers.”

Former Central Coast Mariners Hyundai A-League player and current youth development co-ordinator Damien Brown, said that as a local, he feels “privileged to be involved” in this agreement.

“I am excited for all the football families across the Central Coast that CCF and the Mariners have created a clear and recognisable pathway to the top,” Brown said.

“With the Central Coast Mariners Sporting Campus underway and now an elite football training and playing Academy in place, the future of Central Coast football is in its brightest state ever.”

Finally, Mariners NYL Head Coach Tony Walmsley said he welcomed the opportunity to directly infl uence the development of local players.

“In the true partnership that now exists, the Mariners and CCF will benefi t from the dedicated focus and resources given to elite programs and club football respectively.”

The agreement is subject to relevant approvals from Football Federation Australia and Football New South Wales.

and member of the Terrigal Surf Life Saving Club Derek Taylor is raising money for Central Coast charity – The Donnica Clarke Foundation – as he prepares to compete in the Coolangatta Gold.

The race, made famous by the 1984 movie featuring legendary Ironman Grant Kenny, is a challenging 46 kilometre test of stamina, comprising of an ocean swim, a surf ski leg a board paddle and numerous beach runs.

After successfully completing the event in previous years, Mr Taylor has decided to embrace his participation in this year’s race as an opportunity to

raise money for the Donnica Clarke Foundation.

“This year I would like to give something back to the community that has given me so much help and support over the years,“ said Mr Taylor on his fundraising efforts.

“I am therefore using the 2011 Coolangatta Gold to raise funds for this fantastic Central Coast cause,” he added.

The Donnica Clarke Foundation provides scholarships for young, emerging athletes across all sporting codes on the Central Coast to assist in their endeavours to become successful sports men and women.

The Foundation was created following the untimely passing of promising athlete Donnica Clarke, who lost her life after she slipped and fell from the

cliff face above North Avoca Beach in 2007.

“Donnica had a simple philosophy to life and completion. She believed persistence, determination and most of all, giving it a go,” said Mr Taylor.

“I am eager to support this inspiring Foundation that is dedicated to fostering Donnica’s positive attitude amongst sportspeople around the Central Coast,” he added.

MrTaylor now seeks the assistance of the local community and is looking for businesses and individuals who would like to sponsor his involvement in this year’s Collangatta Gold with all money raised to go to the Foundation.

Event favourite Terrigal SLSC

has convincingly taken out the NSW Pool Rescue Championships over the weekend of July 16 and 17 at Woy Woy.

With the largest team in the competition, Terrigal was able to capitalise on good performances from established athletes as well as a number of new recruits from other Central Coast clubs.

The club has picked up Jack Waddell from Soldiers and former Ocean Beach competitors Elyssia and Alessandra Gasparotto, along with Keelan Bridge, one of the best pool athletes in NSW.

Along with her selection to the national elite squad, Rachelle King’s recent training with Mooloolaba head coach Russell Green obviously paid off.

She came away with a swag of medals in individual and team events.

An enthusiastic team of predominantly young seniors from Umina SLSC

also did well at the event. Aged from 12 years to

Masters, they acquitted themselves admirably, grabbing the attention of other clubs and organisers with a string of outstanding results.

This follows closely on the Club recently being named Branch Club of the Year.

The events involve everything from Simulated Emergency Rescue competition, where teams of 4 are presented with a hitherto unknown poolside disaster scenario including ‘actor victims’, which they have to effi ciently assess and resolve in 2 minutes, to pool events involving obstacles to be swum under, manikins (plastic human torso’s fi lled with water and weighing up to 40kg) to be rescued and team mates to be towed.

Most of the Club’s competitors have never competed in these events before, in fact, of the 23 members, only 2 had competed at this level in these events.

Despite the inexperience, the Club had an outstanding

outcome, placing 4th in the State, ahead of some acknowledged powerhouse clubs, scooping medals in 28 events and top 6 placings in a further 20.

Remarkable results included Teigan Miller with 10 medals, Indigo Verhoeven with 9 medals, Claire Gaffney and Mick Hood scoring 5 medals each, Lara Reineker and Helen Krucler with 4 medals each.

In all, 15 members collected medals, 8 of which won a State medal for the fi rst time.

Team members would like to acknowledge the assistance of Head Coach John Young and the squad coaches at PLC who provided event-specifi c training, as well as the club members who assisted in organising and supporting the team.

The club would also like to point out this is another indication of the capability members can demonstrate in being able to cope with requirements of aquatic rescue situations.

were amongst the recipients of Surf Lifesaving NSW most prestigious awards; Lifesaver of the Year, Offi cial of the Year, and Volunteer of the Year (High C o m m e n d at i o n ) , at Surf Life Saving NSW awards, held on Saturday, July 23.

The event was held Dockside Darling Harbour.

The NSW Lifesaver of the Year award went to Katie Dixon, Surf Life Saving Central Coast Lifesaver of the Year, and Ocean Beach SLSC member since nippers.

Katie was recognized for here tireless efforts both at Ocean Beach and in her roles in support operations across the Central Coast, NSW and Australia, as well as her contribution to youth development.

In her speech, Katie said “I didn’t expect to win,

particularly when so many lifesavers put in so much time”, paying tribute to the other fi nalists from across the state.

For the second year in a row, President of Ocean Beach SLSC David Unger was awarded the NSW Surf Sports Offi cial of the Year.

The award comes on the back of winning the Central Coast Branch Offi cial of the Year award for the past three years running.

The award itself recognises outstanding contributions to offi ciating at local, state and national surf sports carnivals, including the State and Australian championships and the iconic Coolangatta Gold.

Rounding out an impressive evening for Ocean Beach SLSC and a magnifi cent start to the upcoming 90th year celebrations, Surf Life Saving Central Coast Volunteer of the Year Winner Aaron Camp received a high commendation for in the NSW Volunteer of the Year

category for his dedication across a number of lifesaving areas, including lifesaving, support, operations, youth development and community education.

This season, Ocean Beach SLSC celebrates 90

years of community service with an amazing record of “no lives lost” between the red and yellow fl ags.

Black Belt Martial Arts, a local

martial arts club, has been recommended to receive $3000 sponsorship under the Sister City Cultural /Spor t ing Exchange Program.

The grant allows the club to travel to Edogawa in

order to train in a local dojo, learn culture, principles and teaching styles, and compete in a friendly tournament.

As a requirement of receiving the grant, the club must wear a tracksuit which will prominently display the Gosford City and Central Coast logos, as well as the BBMA club logo.

After two previous washed out

attempts to play this Round 12 game, it was fi nally completed on a crisp, dry night at Pluim Park, where there was not a sign of rain or the usual winter fog.

The fi nal result was pleasing for University, but disastrous for Central Coast who are clinging on bravely trying to obtain that important fi fth place position.

Both teams were aware of the importance of this fi xture and gave 100% effort in their endeavour to gain the vital points.

The game was fast, hard, but played in an excellent spirit on a surprisingly dry and even surface.

Sydney Uni. started the better and, in the third minute, gained a corner kick from the left hand side.

The ball came over into a crowded Coast penalty area and, surprisingly, ended up in the net for the opening goal.

It was impossible to tell who scored from the grandstand, and to make matters worse, the University players rushed to the corner fl ag to celebrate.

Even the few University supporters were none the wiser.

After the game, referee

Jason Blackwood stated that he had awarded the goal to No.4, Justine NIlls.

Coast were stunned by this early shock, and immediately attacked the Uni. Goal, and were awarded a free kick around the corner of the penalty area.

Jamie Lobb put took the kick and the ball found Michael Simmonds whose shot was kicked off the line when an equalizing goal seemed inevitable.

The game fl owed back and forth, but attacks by both sides were numbed by good defence, especially the back four for University who were winning all the heading duels.

Half time arrived and the

score remained the same.The second period started

with two quick yellow cards, one to each team, through clumsy tackles rather than foul play.

Both teams continued their attempts to either get the equaliser by the Coast, or an important second goal by University.

The last twenty minutes brought many close misses by each tem with Liam McConachy, Kengo Takushima and Matt Demetriou for Uni., and Kevin Crum, Grant Maudrell and Mitchell Harper for Central Coast, all going close to scoring but each missing golden opportunities.

With two minutes to go, it appeared Coast would at last equalise when Maudrell pick up a clearance down the right hand fl ank and made a run into the penalty area.

He passed back to an unmarked Nathan Byrn who with only the goalkeeper to beat shot over the bar from about seven metres out.

Each team made a very late substitution, but it made no difference to the fi nal score and University went home with the vital three points.

I cannot end this report without naming Jamie Lobb as player of the match.

As captain of Central Coast, he led by example.

Most of the Coast attacks were started by his running down the left hand fl ank and his defensive work was exceptional.

I must also congratulate the few spectators that saw this match.

It had been a bitterly cold day and to just attend showed the true football spirit.

Those who did attend enjoyed a good entertaining match.

This match was probably

decided before a ball was kicked, when the Central Coast players and coaching staff were advised that Central Coast Football had chosen not to nominate senior teams in the Football NSW 2012 Super League competition.

After over twenty fi ve years of Central Coast having a team in the NSW State competition, all was over.

Without doubt, that decision would not have left the players in the right frame of mind to play an important competition match.

Even so, it was Central Coast who opened the scoring in the second minute.

The ball was played down the right and crossed into the Spirit penalty area for Michael Simmonds to score with a clinical header.

Or so it seemed to all in the grandstand.

However, after the game,

referee Jason Blackwood informed a stunned Central Coast team that the goal was an “own goal”.

Spirit were shocked by this goal, but were not undone, however, as they commenced a number of attacks into the Coast penalty area and at the sixteenth minute mark, a poor back pass to goalkeeper Jonathon Faeber was intercepted by the speedy Kwabeno Appian Kubi who had the easiest task of tapping the ball into an empty net.

Central Coast came back again and midway through the fi rst half were awarded a free kick near the left hand corner of the Spirit penalty area.

Nathan Byrn curled the kick into the goal mouth and it bounced off a defender into the net.

This time, it was defi nitely an own goal.

Five minutes later, and Spirit were back on even terms.

Appian Kubi made a fast run down the right side and passed the ball to Agyei

Akwasi. His shot was defl ected by

goalkeeper Faeber across the goal mouth and in an effort to stop the ball entering the net, a Coast defender only ensured it was a goal.

Another “own goal”.Three minutes later, Spirit

scored and took the lead when Brady Smith went down the right hand side and lobbed what looked like an innocuous ball into an empty penalty area, but over the head of a startled Faeber into the far corner of the net.

Just before the break, Spirit increased their lead with a powerful drive by Daniel Cunningham that left Faeber grasping for air as the ball nestled in the bottom left hand corner of the net.

Things did not improve after the half time break for Central Coast.

Four minutes after the break, Faeber raced out to stop an onrushing Appian Kubi, but could only manage to take trip the player and referee Blackwood had no hesitation in awarding a penalty kick.

Cunningham duly converted for his second goal.

From then on, the game deteriorated with both teams appearing to take it easy.

The ball was played up and down the park with really no conviction by either side and after an exciting fi rst half, the game fi nished without further score, and no more own goals.

Central Coast coach Peter Preston, was naturally disappointed on all of the evenings events but stated, “Considering what has happened tonight, I can only say I am very proud of the way my players played and behaved.

“It must have been very hard for them, especially playing a good team such as Spirit were tonight.

“On a normal night it could have been a different result.”

Spirit coach, John McLafferty, himself a former Central Coast fi rst team coach, was very sympathetic of the opposition’s problems.

“We played well and deserved the win which

keeps us in contention for the title, but it is disappointing to hear that we will not be watching a Central Coast team next year.

“I can only wish Peter and his players all the best for the future.”

And so an interesting game, in more ways than one, came to a sad but uneventful end.

Avoca WPL captain, Biddy

Holstein, is unlikely to complete the season after suffering a severe shoulder injury during a charity game against Wyoming held recently at Erina High School.

Holstein, seen pictured in the Avoca blue strip, fell heavily during the dying minutes of the charity game and had to be taken, via ambulance, to Gosford hospital, where scans showed severe ligament damage to her shoulder and collar bone.

It is doubtful the central defender will be fi t enough to complete the last few games of the WPL season.

On the injury, Biddy said, “The timing is not really great and with just a few games left, it is unfortunate this happened now, but the specialist is hopeful of an early recovery”.

She went on to say, ‘Whilst I love my football, work is more important and I must get back as soon as possible”.

Biddy, along with other family members, runs the popular Gnostic Mana café in Woy Woy.

Avoca FC president Glen Johnson said ‘today’s game was held to raise money for the Cancer Council of NSW with funds raised ($1,000) going to both Men’s and Women’s health organisations”.

Johnson went on to say, “Teams from Avoca FC were invited to wear either Pink or Yellow socks for the day to raise money and help promote awareness of health issues in both Men and Women.

“The day culminated in a Premier League Women’s match between Avoca and Wyoming in front of a very reasonable crowd given to poor weather conditions in what turned out to be a very

fast and exciting game”.Wyoming came away with

the win [5-1], with Rachel Wynne scoring a hatrick.

It is highly unlikely Avoca will make the fi nal four in the WPL and look to be relegated back to the womens fi rst grade for 2012 along with The Entrance girls which means the remaining four games are played for pride more than anything else for these two squads.

Meanwhile, the competition is hotting up in the womens fi rst grade for top honours with Gosford now taking a three point lead over second placed Berkley Vale on twenty points at round ten.

Historical leaders, Kariong, having had recent poor performances, have dropped to third with eighteen points and a game in hand giving them a slender four point lead over fourth placed East Gosford.

Last weekend saw another washout due to

inclement weather on the coast, and with just four matches remaining to be played by both MPL and WPL, plus make ups, sees us at the business end of the season.

The grand fi nals games for both have been set down to be played at Pluim Park on Saturday September 10.

Gosford head up the Womens Premier League with a seven point lead and game in hand over second placed Doyalson on twenty six points, whilst Wyoming have a slender one point lead over fourth placed Tuggerah on sixteen points, both having played eleven games at round fi fteen.

This Sunday’s games in the WPL sees make up games from round three with Gosford travelling away to Doyalson, an important game for the home team and Wyoming away to The Entrance.

Hearing news of Berkeley

Vale sailor Darren Bundock winning a thirteenth world title made me think about the enormity of his achievements, and whether he is in fact the best sportsperson to ever come from the Central Coast.

Has there ever been anybody in the long and illustrious sporting history of the Coast who has done better?

It’s an interesting question, and certainly one for the historians (some who may be reading this modest article right now), and I’d love to hear from anyone who has a sports champion that can rival Darren’s phenomenal results.

I mean 13 world titles? It’s almost unbelievable.And to compete against

the best sailors around the planet in a sport that may have a relatively low profi le in Australia, but which is certainly, like cycling, big business and news overseas, particularly in Europe.

It’s a massive effort.Here’s a brief resume of

what the brilliant Berkeley Vale sailor has won on the world stage so far, and it’s safe to say it’s not over yet folks !

Seven World titles in the Tornado Catamaran class.

Four F18 World championship wins.

Two ISAF World Sailing crowns.

Throw in three Olympic Games – 2000, where he

won a silver medal, plus 2004 and 2008 and it’s a record that is nothing short of phenomenal.

He’s already focussed on representing Australia at next year’s Olympics in England.

And that’s not even counting his numerous Australian sailing class titles, of which he’s won several.

So put your thinking caps on folks, anyone better that you can think of?

And while we’re on local sporting champions, congratulations to Stuart Gyngell, Matt Dawson, Amy Nurthen, Tim Schofi eld, Lachlan Tame, Nate Henry and Matt Ryan, who have all been named monthly winners as part of the Central Coast Sports Federation Sports Star of the Year Awards.

These outstanding sportsmen and women are now in contention to take out the major awards at the prestigious Sports Star of the Year Awards to be held at Mingara in November and a chance to share in over $20,000 in prizes.

So that’s my debut column – short and sweet and hope it passes the strict publishing guidelines and with the blessing of the esteemed editor, gets another run next month.

Kariong confi rmed their excellent

good recent form when they defeated competition leaders Avoca Beach by 31 points to 17 at Kariong Oval.

Kariong got away to a great start and were never headed for the remainder of the match.

Kariong played some great rugby in the opening 40 minutes.

They dominated most phases of play and were right into the match right from the opening whistle.

They came ready to play while Avoca Beach were very slow off the mark.

Kariong dominated play on the fi eld but also on the scoreboard.

They were able to lead by 17 points to nil at the halftime break and all seemed over, even at that stage.

Best for Kariong at this stage was No.8 Sione Ofahengaue who was very strong both in the set pieces as well as general play.

Another to play well for the home side was centre John Malu, whose experience really did come to the fore for his team.

He also took over the goal kicking duties from Scott Hanley, who went off injured during the match.

Avoca Beach did attempt to get back into the game in the second half and never gave up but they were trying to overcome a big lead.

Avoca Beach had the majority of possession in the second half and did most of the attacking.

Good Kariong defence did keep them out on many occasions but Avoca Beach

did manage to cross for three tries in the second half.

Kariong also scored two tries, and they were both from intercepts when the visitors were on the attack.

Winger Lucas Koschel was strong and fast and added to his try scoring feats this season with another three tries.

The Sheridan brothers, Brad and Luke, were the best players for Avoca Beach and they did not take a backward step all day.

The win by Kariong certainly brings all the top teams that little bit closer together and does make for a very interesting run into the semi-fi nals over the next month.

Ourimbah brought about an excellent away win when they defeated Terrigal by 10 points to 6 at The Haven Oval.

This was obviously a very low scoring match and both teams could have won this one.

This win sees Terrigal and Ourimbah now in a very tight struggle for the Top Four.

Terrigal scored all the points in the fi rst half but Ourimbah hit back and scored all the points in the second half.

Terrigal were able to kick two penalty gaols through Damien Woods to go to the halftime break with a 6 point to nil lead.

It was a very sour battle and both teams had their chances to post further points.

Ourimbah took the lead in the second half and went on to win in the second stanza.

Ourimbah winger Steven Pike was able to cross for two tries to secure the win.

Best for Ourimbah were fullback Anthony Erickson and prop Peter Friend while best for Terrigal were No.8 Ryan Metcalfe and halfback Ryan Atkins.

Northlakes kicked a penalty goal in the fi nal few minutes of the match to defeat Warnervale by 22 points to 21 at Slade Park.

Warnervale held a narrow lead for much of the game and were hoping to hang for victory, but Northlakes play inspired rugby and never

gave in. Warnervale did have a

chance to kick a winning penalty right on fulltime but it was waved away.

It was an arm wrestle from start to fi nish and proved to be an enthralling game of rugby.

Best for Northlakes were centre Paul Wilson and No.8 Barry Graham.

It was to prove another close loss for Warnervale but they still continue to have their best ever season.

Best players for Warnervale were fl anker Chris Hitch, prop Tony Paulo and halfback Josh Holman.

Gosford got away to a good start and never looked to be headed.

The Entrance toiled all day and were rewarded with a try close to the end of the game.

It was a quite scrappy game but still resulted in a bonus point win for the Gosford team in the race to the semi-fi nals.

Round 15 - Preview - July 30

The Match of the Day this

Saturday sees the traditional clash between Gosford and Terrigal at The Haven Oval.

Gosford are currently in second spot on the ladder while Terrigal are in a fi ght to make the semi-fi nals.

A win will see Terrigal with a big chance of making the Top Four, while a loss will certainly diminish their chances.

So, this is important game with only three games remaining after this round before the semi-fi nals.

Terrigal are at home, so this is a big advantage.

However, they meet a side that has been playing good rugby and who were leading the competition until a couple of weeks ago.

There were no games last week because of the general bye, so both teams should be freshened up and both teams will be ready to play.

Terrigal know the importance of this game and will give it their all.

Gosford have only played the one game in over 3 weeks and could be a little underdone.

Both teams are strong right across the paddock and with the conditions expected to be soft underfoot much of the play could be centred in the forwards.

This is where the battle between the loose forwards will be vital.

Gosford have players such as Andrew Moseley, Chris Comerford and Shanon Hardgrave in those positions, and they will have to be at their best if they are to overcome the skills and commitment of Terrigal’s Ryan Metcalfe and Dave

Crawford. This will be a good game

of rugby and will be hard fought for the entire 80 minutes.

Avoca Beach are at home to Northlakes this Saturday at Heazlett Park and both of these teams were winners at their most recent outing.

Avoca Beach are leading the competition and are at home so they will go into the match expecting to win and probably are the fi rm

favourites for most people. However, Northlakes

have played good rugby this year and when on their game, can beat anyone.

Northlakes will try to match the home side up front and then try to spread the ball wide.

Northlakes are strong in the centres and have speed out wide, but the whole team will have to be at their very best if they are going to win this one.

Woy Woy are at home to Warnervale at Woy Woy Oval, and this game will also go right down to the wire.

Woy Woy have not had a game for quite a while because of the washout and the general bye, so they will be keen to get on the paddock and to play well.

Warnervale had a great run in the mid part of the season but in recent weeks have lost a few very close games.

Those losses have

probably cost Warnervale the chance of making the semi-fi nals, but a win on Saturday might just renew those chances.

Woy Woy will be keen to win and certainly do have the players to do that.

Another very tight game that will prove a real struggle both in the backs and the forwards.

The Entrance are at home to Ourimbah at Joseph Banks Oval and will

be hopeful of putting on a good performance.

The Entrance were quite good in their last effort and will be most keen to put in even better effort this weekend.

Ourimbah had a great win over Terrigal in their last game and have suddenly surged right back into contention for a semi-fi nal spot.

A win this Saturday is essential if they are to achieve that.

Woy Woy Junior Rugby Union

has held a pink sock day on Saturday July 16 in an effort to raise money for the McGrath Foundation.

All teams from U7s to U15s took part.

The kids were given a pledge sheet to get friends

and family to sponsor their team for every try they scored.

One of the dads from the U12s underestimated the boys, as he pledged $10 per try, and the boys ran in 9.

The club has raised $1750 from Saturday’s efforts alone.

Once all the pledge sheets come in, the total is

going to be well over $2000. Media offi cer for the club

Billy Mac said “it is one thing to be proud of kids playing rugby union in the spirit of the game, but to see all the kids wearing pink for this great cause makes our whole club very proud indeed.”

Roosters paid tribute to Donald Leggett, who passed away on Sunday, June 26, aged 84 years.

“The memory of Don Leggett AM will always be treasured by the Woy Woy Roosters, with Mr Leggett having been a staunch supporter of the Club and the driving force behind the eventual establishment and construction of the Woy Woy Leagues Club in the 1970s, through to the opening of our great licensed Club in 1983,” said Woy Woy Roosters Rugby League Club marketing and promotions manager Mr Peter Read.

“A lifelong Roosters supporter, Mr Leggett was sought out by the club in the mid ‘70s when the vision of

having his own leagues club came to the fore.

“In concert with the likes of Jim Robinson, Bob Millwood, Duncan Chapman, Terry Hardman and many, many others over the years brought the plans to life.

“When the Woy Woy and District RLFC Limited was formed in 1979, Mr Leggett was duly elected as inaugural chairman and held that position until 1982.

“During this time, his leadership and business acumen contributed greatly to the Roosters becoming the most dominant Club on the Central Coast, on and off the fi eld.

“After handing over the chairman reigns to Geoff McMahon in 1983, Mr Leggett went on to focus on his political interests

and will be remembered for being Gosford Shire’s fi rst ever mayor upon being proclaimed a city on January 1st, 1980.

“Mr Leggett always maintained strong ties with the Roosters through his role of Patron, and was a regular at home games and presentation nights.

“Rooster’s supporters will fondly remember Mr Leggett as the Club’s colourful ground announcer at home games throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

“The Roosters have always held their relationship with Mr Leggett dearly, with a bar being named after him upon the opening of the leagues club.

“The Woy Woy RLFC mourns the loss of one of its fi nest- the great Don Leggett AM,” said Mr Read.

Memorial Club has been selected to represent Australia in the Australia v South Africa to be held in South

Australia from August 30 through until September 1.

This is a fi rst for Sherriff, who has not played a test series against South Africa before.

“It’s the fi rst time I will play a test series against

South Africa, so I’m looking forward to meeting some new people and catching up with old friends,” he said.

“[I’m] also looking forward to beating them.

“It’s always great to receive the phone call from the national coach to say that I’ve been selected to represent the country, and this time was no different.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to compete against a quality nation like South Africa, and it will allow us to see how we rank on the world stage.

“I never get nervous, but I’m defi nitely excited about the series,” he fi nished.

Recently, a request was received for a soccer playing kit for students at various orphanage schools.

Club president of

Toukley Gorokan Gunners Soccer Club, Charlie Borg, answered the call & sent a kit comprising shirts, shorts, & socks to the school.

A few months later, this photo & a letter of thanks was received by the Gunners, explaining the boys’ appreciation of their new kit.

FC are celebrating their 50th season and will be holding a celebration/reunion dinner on September 24 at The Ettalong Beach War Memorial Club.

The club is looking forward to many past and present members exchanging tales of their experiences with one of the oldest and most successful football clubs on the coast.

A highlight of the anniversary night will be

the release of a book covering the 50 year history of the club, covering from the founding of Ettalong Beach Soccer club in 1961, through to the formation of Southern United in 1972, to the merging of the two clubs to form Southern & Ettalong United Football Club in 1985.

The book is a tribute to the founders, committees, players and supporters who have helped the club grow and achieve many successes over the years.

Put together from 50 years of stories, news paper clippings, photos, magazine articles and memories, the

book is guaranteed to put a smile on the face of every reader and bring back some special moments.

SEU’s roots go back to 1961 when the Ettalong Beach Soccer Club was formed.

The club was the fi rst junior club on the Central Coast and in their early years travelled to the Hornsby district for competition.

Members of the Ettalong Beach soccer club were also instrumental in establishing the Central Coast Soccer Association in 1963.

Tickets to the anniversary/reunion dinner are on sale now.

Central Coast Mariners edged

a determined Canberra FC side 2-1 in their friendly match played at Deakin Stadium on July 14.

The Mariners started as they had left off against Belconnen, creating the fi rst chance of the match as early as the sixth minute, when Michael Baird, who had scored a hat-trick against the Blue Devils, fi red in a fi erce low drive that cannoned off the base of the post and away to safety.

However, it quickly became apparent that Canberra FC would pose more attacking threat than their Rock Premier League counterparts with Paul Ivanic inches away from claiming a brilliant long-range ball from Adam Spaleta, who showed just why he is regarded as the best passer of a ball in the local competition.

Moments later, the home team took a shock lead.

A raking 35-metre ball over the top was meant for Victor Yanes, who was only just beaten to the ball by Mariners’ ‘keeper Justin Pasfi eld.

Pasfi eld’s clearance went straight to Ivanic, however, and Canberra FC’s leading scorer did the rest with a precise side-foot volley into the empty net from 25-metres out.

The Mariners upped the ante after falling behind and drew level in sensational fashion.

Little seemed the be happening as the ball fell to Troy Hearfi eld 25 metres from goal, but the Mariners new signing unleashed a tremendous shot that fl ashed past Ben Klug who was left helpless by the ferocity of the drive.

To their credit, the home team refused to be daunted

by the professionals response and continued to play a patient passing game in an attempt to free Ivanic and Yanes up front.

The Mariners defense, marshaled wonderfully by the calm presence of Dutchman Patrick Zwaanswijk, were resilient though and held fi rm until the break.

The visitors, who introduced Matt Simon and Oliver Bozanic into the fray at half-time, almost took the lead immediately after the restart, when Rostyn Griffi ths smashed a thunderbolt from distance that crashed off the woodwork with replacement goalkeeper Adam Perakovic fl oundering.

It wasn’t long before the Mariners hit the front though, when substitute Bozanic waltzed his way into the area and slotted past Perakovic from an acute angle.

It was clear that the club had raised their game after their half-time talk.

Perakovic needed to be at his best to save well from a Daniel McBreen header after a swirling cross from Michael McGlinchey.

From the resulting corner, Perakovic pushed a Matt Simon header away to safety.

With a big Rock Premier League match against Belconnen United looming on Sunday afternoon at McKellar Park, Canberra FC Head Coach Rob Graham r the changes midway through the half giving game time to youngsters Aaron Evans, Ryan Keir and Daniel Bennett and resting his more established players.

With so many changes, the tempo of the game slowed dramatically nearing the end of the match, with a late chance to Daniel McBreen which hit the side netting the nearest the Mariners went extending their lead.

Central Coast Mariners held a

media opportunity on Thursday, July 28, 2011, at Club Tuggerah, celebrating the commencement of work on Stage One of the state-of-the-art Central Coast Mariners Sporting

Campus. Planned guests

were Minister for Sport, Indigenous Employment and Economic Development, and Social Housing and Homelessness, the Honourable Senator Mark Arbib.

A number of other dignitaries were also planned to be present, including FFA Head of the

Hyundai A-League, Mr Lyall Gorman, Central Coast Mariners Chairman, Mr Peter Turnbull, Managing Director of North Construction, Mr Tim Cornish, Federal Member for Dobell, Mr Craig Thomson, and Mayor of Wyong Shire Council, Mr Doug Eaton.

Central Coast Mariners had a strong presence on the day, with Head Coach

Graham Arnold, Assistant Coach Phil Moss, and players Matthew Simon, Josh Rose, Mat Ryan, Patrick Zwaanswijk and Brad Porter in attendance.

Development of Stage One of the Central Coast Mariners Sporting Complex includes the construction of a ten court 5-a-side Soccer Centre, an Aquatic and Hydrotherapy Centre, a

tournament sized football fi eld, an Amenities Block, as well as associated infrastructure.

All these facilities will be made available for public use as well as for Mariners Hyundai A-League, Youth and Academy players, providing an elite training and recovery base for the people of the Central Coast.
