First Grade

Gosford won the 2011 First Grade

Premiership when they defeated Avoca Beach at Woy Woy Oval by 26 points to 10.

Gosford were the better team on the day and the win ended Avoca Beach’s run of six successive First Grade Premierships.

The opening exchanges in the match were very evenly contested with both teams having opportunities to post points.

It was a very warm, even hot, day and the conditions were going to make it a tough day for both teams.

It was Avoca Beach who opened the scoring in the 3rd minute when Avoca Beach fullback Matt Maloney kicked a penalty goal.

After this, Gosford dominated the game territorially, but were unable to score points due to some good Avoca defence.

This period of attack then saw Avoca Beach follow up with some determined play and they gained control for quite a while but they, like Gosford earlier, were unable to post points.

The fi rst 20 minutes of the match saw play to and fro from one end of the fi eld to the other and there was plenty of ball movement.

Both teams were doing some brilliant things on the paddock but there were also several errors from both teams that stopped the attack.

On several occasions, kicks went into touch on the full and a 22 metre drop kick once going into touch on the full.

Many of these errors were due to the intensity of match.

In the 22nd minute of the match, Gosford took the lead when prop Simote Lauti took the ball from the back of a maul and crossed in the corner.

The conversion from near touch by centre Tim Hill had taken Gosford to a 7 points to

3 lead in the Grand Final. It was at this stage of the

match, in the last 15 minutes of the fi rst half, that Gosford started to take control and to dominate proceedings.

Their forwards were playing brilliantly and were gaining the ascendancy over the Avoca Beach pack in many of the forward exchanges.

Hooker Chris Comerford was playing the game of his life.

He was everywhere in attack and defence.

He was often the fi rst to breakdown, and at times, was the main instigator of an attack.

Others to play well in the Gosford forwards were No.8 Shanon Hardgrave who made several incisive runs on the edge of the ruck and often got his team over the advantage line.

Lock Luke Hennig also was having one of his best games.

He was securing good ball in the lineout but was also having a good game in general play.

For Avoca Beach, the Sheridan brothers were in everything.

Prop Luke was a tower of strength, and fl anker Bradd was making his mark on

proceedings. For Gosford, the backs

were also combining well. Winger Dave Von Kotze

was playing well and his talk form the back kept his side on edge throughout the match.

A great run down the sideline saw centre Josh McGlynn make inroads into Avoca Beach territory.

Sustained pressure resulting from this attack saw fl anker Andrew Moseley cross in the corner for a try.

This try took the score to Gosford 12, Avoca Beach 3 and that remained the score at the halftime break.

Gosford were defi nitely playing good rugby at this stage, but the score line suggested that the match was still very much up for grabs.

The second half opened with a great run by Gosford lock Mitch Cornwell and this run put Gosford deep into Avoca Beach territory.

Avoca Beach did respond with a very good run by halfback Dave Horton but it was Gosford, in the 7th minute of this half, who went further ahead.

A brilliant individual 35 metre run by Gosford fullback Peter Miller saw him “ghost” through the Avoca Beach backline to score

under the posts. The conversion of this

try by Tim Hill had taken Gosford to a very handy 19 points to 3 lead.

Gosford were certainly on top at this stage.

They also missed several other opportunities to score, when forward passes on a couple of occasions prevented further tries.

At the 19 minute mark, Gosford had the game secure when Josh McGlynn scored his team’s fourth try and the conversion of this try took Gosford to an almost unassailable 26 points to 3 lead.

There was still a quarter of the Grand Final to go and Avoca Beach gave it their all to get back into the game.

Avoca Beach No.8 Chad Martin was strong and was making inroads into the Gosford defence.

A strong forward surge by Avoca Beach saw lock Adam Winter crash over adjacent to the posts to reduce the lead.

This converted try in the 26th minute had reduced

the lead to 26 points to 10, but Gosford were able to weather the storm and held on the win the First Grade Grand Final.

Gosford had won their fi rst First Grade Premiership since 2004, and the loss for Avoca Beach ended their incredible winning streak of 6 successive Premierships.

That achievement will stand the annals of time in local rugby history.

Gosford won the battle in the forwards and the Gosford backline was able to take full advantage of the excellent ball provided.

Second Grade

Avoca Beach were able to

win the Second Grade Premiership, when they defeated Ourimbah by 16 points to 10.

This was a close tussle throughout and either team could have won this match.

Ourimbah led the game by 10 points to 9 at the halftime break and also well into the second half.

However, a converted try to winger Matt Anderson midway through the second half saw Avoca Beach take the lead.

They were able to hang on against a determined Ourimbah side to take out the Premiership.

Ourimbah were able to succeed

in Third Grade when they won the Premiership by defeating Northlakes by 23 points to 10.

Ourimbah played some very pleasing rugby and were able to steadily build their point score throughout the match.

They went to the halftime break, leading by 13 points to 3, and then continued that control to maintain the lead until the fi nal whistle.

Ourimbah scored two tries to one and deserved the victory.

The Central Coast Junior Rugby

Union season was fi nalised on Saturday September 10, with the Grand Finals held at Bluetongue Stadium.

Presented with clear weather and a well grassed fi eld, all of the players performed to their best, providing a great spectacle for the large crowd.

The day commenced with a hard fought U11 match, where Warnervale upset the minor premiers Terrigal 14-7.

In all of the following matches, apart from the U15s, the Minor Premiers went on to complete successful seasons by winning their Premiership.

Terrigal U10s were presented with Premiership medallions for their success in their ‘fi rst past the post’ competition.

In the U12s, the Woy Woy team won their 3rd straight title by defeating Terrigal 29-15.

In the U13s, it was Ourimbah who were triumphant against Kariong

18-7. Terrigal U14s completed

another undefeated season with victory over a determined Woy Woy squad 33-5.

The U15s win to Ourimbah meant they became the fi rst Club to take out 2 Grand Finals, when they won a cliff-hanger with a penalty goal to Toby Carver

after full time, giving them an 8-7 result over Terrigal.

The winners of the following two matches also gave their Clubs a 2nd Grand Final victory.

Hot favourites Warnervale U16s had a tough battle against The Entrance, before sealing the match 29-12.

The last match of the

day showcased the juniors who will be progressing into Senior Competition in 2012.

In a tough and skilful encounter, it was Woy Woy took the honours over Avoca Beach 22-17.

At the completion of the day, Andrew Lawler (Avoca Beach U17s) was named the CCJRU player of the season.

Junior Rugby Union season comes to a close

by Ian CameronLarry Thomson from NSW Country

Women’s Rugby and Tony Rudd from the Central Coast Rugby Club have been awarded an NRMA Unsung Hero volunteer appreciation award for their outstanding commitment to local community sport and their contribution to Rugby Union.

NRMA Director Kyle Loades said NRMA’s 26 Unsung Hero awards coincided with the Rugby World Cup 2011and acknowledged volunteers who donated hours of their time every Rugby season.

“Mr Thomson’s work supporting the game of rugby is an inspiring example of helping others.

“He was nominated by NSW Country Women’s Rugby; however, he could have easily been nominated by Central Coast Rugby too, where he is the administrator.

“Mr Thomson also referees regularly,” Mr Loades said.

NSW Rugby Union Executive Director Bruce Worboys said New South Wales Rugby Union was

honoured to be associated with the NRMA ‘s Unsung Heroes programme.

Community rugby relies on a selfl ess volunteer network.

To acknowledge and reward members in NSW and the ACT is tremendous.

All our Unsung Heroes volunteer their time, energy and expertise.

Mr Thomson, who has won a cruise on the fi ve star luxury ship ms Volendam cruising New Zealand for Rugby World Cup 2011, plus tickets to rugby matches in Auckland, said it was a great honour to receive this award, but totally unexpected.

“I have been involved in all facets of rugby for many years and I do these things because I enjoy them, and to put something back into the game after I fi nished playing,” Mr Thomson said.

Similarly, Mr Rudd also noted his love for the game, saying “I am proud to be recognised by my peers and very humbled as well, because all involved in Community Rugby do it for the love of the game and to assist in ensuring that all can enjoy it.

“If I can support one referee to improve his skills, then I feel that I have played some small role in developing our game.”

First Grade Grand Final:

Umina – 4

Berkeley Vale – 3

Umina has taken out the 2011

CountryNet Central Coast Mens Premier League title with a 4-3, extra-time win over Berkeley Vale in a classic grand fi nal in front of a large crowd at Pluim Park, Lisarow on Saturday night.

Berkeley Vale went into the match as favourites, having taken out the League Championship with a last round 4-0 over Umina.

They fi rmed further in the fi rst ten minutes of the match initially through a goal to striker Scott Imberger and then almost immediately afterwards, when Umina defender Grant Brisbin, broke his leg in a tackle and was taken to hospital.

However, these setbacks only spurred on the experienced Umina team, who equalised in the 11th minute through Joel Wilkinson, and then took the lead from a brilliant 30-metre drive from Josh Schumann

just three minutes later. With Berkeley Vale

wilting under the continuing pressure, Umina extended their lead to 3-1 at the half-hour mark through Matt Goodwin.

The tide turned in the second half with Berkeley Vale mounting a series of attacks and just fi ve minutes in, a superb cross from David Graham found Imberger, who scored his second goal.

The Wombats continued to test the Umina defense, and fi nally broke through in the 80th minute when defender Luke Rogers leveled the match at 3-3.

The match went into extra time and, with players from both teams showing signs of fatigue, a penalty shootout looked likely to decide the title.

However, with just three minutes left, Umina’s David Brewer headed a through ball over the head of Berkeley Vale goalkeeper Steve Grimmitt for what proved to be the decisive goal.

The win was Umina’s third premiership in six years and the fourth for the team’s iconic captain, Andrew French, who had announced his retirement prior to the

match. It was also a third

premiership for Umina’s long-serving coach, Chris Powell.

The result was a body blow to coach Stuart Davis and his Berkeley Vale team, having lost each of the two previous grand fi nals, to Wyoming in 2009 and The Entrance last year.

They do have the consolation of contesting the prestigious Football NSW Champion of Champions competition which starts later this month, hoping to improve on their 2009 effort when they reached the semi-fi nal stage.

Reserve Grade Grand Final:

WYOMING – 1

Berkeley Vale – 0

Berkeley Vale suffered a similar

disappointment in the Reserve Grade grand fi nal, when they went down 1-0 to Wyoming.

As was the case in First Grade, Berkeley Vale had taken out the league championship, losing just one of their 18 matches in the

competition proper, before going down to Wyoming in the major semi-fi nal.

Berkeley Vale were in control of the match for much of the fi rst half.

However, Wyoming fought back after the break and were rewarded with a dramatic goal in the 68th

minute from substitute striker Daniel Edwards, just one minute after he had taken the fi eld and with his fi rst touch of the ball.

The win continued Wyoming’s dominance of the Premier League Reserve Grade competition.

It was the club’s fourth

premiership in the past six years and a triumph for player/coach Michael Kennedy who equalled the achievement of his three predecessors by taking out the title in his fi rst year as a senior coach.

Grand Finals, Pluim Park, September 10

The 35As Grand Final played at

Pat Morley oval last Sunday resulted in Ourimbah defeating Southern Ettalong United two-nil.

With both of Ourimbah’s goals coming in the fi rst half, it seems that was all that was required to give Ourimbah both minor and major premier titles for their 2011 campaign.

An Ourimbah free kick by Alex Powell drew fi rst blood by sending the ball sailing past the defence and into the bottom, left corner of Sothern’s goal.

Ourimbah’s second came from Andrew Hubbard, who has been out of action with a groin injury for the last 8 weeks and a fi tting goal for someone celebrating the recent birth of his daughter, Stephanie.

Southern Ettalong’s goalkeeper, “Red”, made two classic saves to keep the score respectable for Southern Ettalong, who also

did their best to come back in the second half, but were kept scoreless with some good defensive play by Ourimbah.

Ourimbah coach, Richard Pagden, said, “It has been a stop/start season with the wet weather and with having to play all games away, not having a home ground didn’t

help.“So this was a fi tting end

to a three year success being 35A League Champions and Premiers in that time,” he said.

Pagden went on to say “Thanks to all the players and supporters for another terrifi c season”.

Womens Premier League minor

premiers, Gosford, secured another Grand Final win by defeating Doyalson 3-2 in the Grand Final played on Sunday September 11at Pluim Park.

Down, but defi nitely not out, the Doyalson girls drew fi rst blood with a goal coming from Nicole Mackie in the 25th minute giving them the edge until just before the half time break when Gosford striker, Megan Sullivan, equalized.

The Doyalson squad will be the ones to look out for in 2012 if they can keep together and maybe compliment the team by recruiting additional skilled players for the 2012 season.

In what was a close fought contest, it was not until the 60th minute that Gosford took control of the game with a brace coming from Angela Beattie fi nding the back of Doyalson’s net in the 66th and 75th minute putting Gosford 3-1 up.

To their credit, Doyalson continued to take the game to Gosford and consoled themselves with a last minute goal with seconds remaining on the clock, giving the northerners a respectable result from a hard fought match.

The win for Gosford sees the girls undefeated in two seasons and both squads becoming reminiscent of the days when WPL was dominated by Ourimbah and Kincumber three or four

years ago. It would be interesting to

see who would come out on top if these four squads, all things being equal, competed against each other.

Gosford will now concentrate on the prestigious Champion of Champions competition which will see them pitched against the best from Sydney and NSW country.

The fi rst game saw Gosford pitched against last year’s runners up, Lindfi eld, played out last Sunday at South Granville, and coming away with a fi ve nil defeat of Lindfi eld has given the girls a huge confi dence boost.

Coach Mark Yule said “The team played one of their better games and we played to our strength, with an early opening goal going to Erin Markwick in the fi rst few minutes from a set piece 25 yards out giving us a one nil half time lead”.

“Angela Beattie gave us an early goal in second half with the third coming from a marvelous set piece effort from our specialist at these, Erin Markwick, fi nding the back of Lindfi eld’s net 25 yards out.”

“From here, we cruised through with two more goals coming from Nat Dawson and Peta O’Loughin,” Yule said.

Unfortunately, Neisha Klessattel is out for the remainder of the season with an ankle injury that will require a reconstruction from an injury sustained in the grand fi nal match two weeks ago.

One goal was all that separated

Kariong and Gosford in their Grand Final encounter played Sunday September 18 at Pluim Park.

The single goal coming from a clinical fi nish by Kayla Vanderfi eld coming midway through the fi rst half was all that was required to secure

Kariong the trophy and give them both minor and major premiers in the womens fi rst grade competition.

Gosford had chances to even the score, but failed to capitalize when they were presented, however, their defensive strategy played an important part in keeping Kariong out for the best part of the game.

It would appear from

their successful run in the Women’s First Grade competition that Kariong look to embrace the Womens Premier League for the 2012 season.

Having said that, and to compete with the likes of Doyalson, Wyoming, and Gosford they will need to inject some new, youthful, blood into their squad if they wish to be competitive.

With the football season nearly over, Grandstand will bring you out-of-season news as it comes to hand for the coming 2012 season.

We welcome news items to be sent in and whilst cannot promise to publish, you can be sure items will not be published if they are not sent in.

10A soccer team won its grand fi nal against East Gosford 2-1 on Saturday, September 10, at Pluim Park, Lisarow.

Coach Jack Guinta said it was a “deserved victory to a team that has been the bench mark over the past few years and winning this grand fi nal was the ultimate accolade it could have received”.

“The boys were upbeat as we knew that we were

playing a team that has never defeated us,” said Mr Guinta.

“Our pre-game talk was about playing to our potential and having composure on the ball in front of goal,” he said.

“Our boys started well and I thought we had the better of play in the fi rst half.”

The team’s fi rst goal came from Darcy Coleman who out passed and dribbled past the East Gosford defence to slot the ball past the keeper with a neat right foot shot into the back of the net.

“In the second half, a change in tactics from East Gosford saw them playing the long ball forward and chase more so than what they were doing in the fi rst half,” said Mr Guinta.

“This allowed them to bypass our indestructible midfi eld for a little while and eventually created the chance they were looking for where our defence failed to clear the ball only for the East Gosford number 12 to score a great individual goal to level the score at 1-all.

“Our defence continued to soak up what East Gosford

was throwing at them with their long ball tactics.

“With two minutes to go, the ball was played out from the back to our midfi eld on the right hand side and, with a switch of play to the middle of the park, the ball came to Darcy who dribbled it towards the left hand side of the box.

“With a wonderful left foot strike, he beat the keeper and won the Grand Final for his Umina team with one minute remaining.”

The most important part of each of these days was the presentation of badges by president Lesley to the ladies who had turned 80 or 90 during the last 12 months.

23 ladies had turned 80 and received their Super Veterans badge.

3 very special ladies had turned 90 and received their Star Super Veterans badge, they were, Mary Bidmead – Terrigal, Ruth Winser – Umina Beach and Lilian Weber – Woy Woy.

Veterans Celebrate by Robyn Davis

The Central Coast District Women’s

Bowling Association recently held their

special Veterans days at Terrigal, The Entrance and Umina Beach.

Glorious winter sunshine greeted the 249 ladies in attendance during these days.

In a thrilling e n c o u n t e r

between the top fi rst grade men’s teams Doyalson and Avoca, the grand fi nal encounter played out on Sunday 10th September at Pluim Park, was not for the faint hearted.

Ninety minutes plus extra time could not separate the rivals and with the scores equal at 2 a-piece the game was destined for a penalty shoot-out.

It was Avoca who took control with the fi rst shot beating Doyalson’s keeper.

In a horror about turn for Doyalson not only did they fail to get the ball past

Avoca’s keeper, Blain Davis, with their fi rst attempt, they ended up failing to score any of their fi rst three attempts.

Avoca on the other hand successfully converted their fi rst three shots giving them the Grand Final win 5-2 on aggregate.

The teams have met four times during the 2011 season with Avoca defeating Doyalson three of those encounters.

Avoca’s demotion from last year’s Premier League [MPL] sees this win as testimony to their ability and whilst coming 2 points below leaders Doyalson in second place once again showed their determination at coming back.

The Championships, held in Blacktown, enjoyed participating teams from France, New Caledonia, ACT, Northern Territory, all States, as well as New Zealand.

It is an important “National Points“ tournament for the players that are seeking selection for 2012 International events.

Kasiea Naidoo, for the fi rst time in a major NSW event, found her form in the U12 U48kg, and threw with her seoi nage (shoulder throw) to fi nish with ground holding technique.

Daniel Villani is the new rising junior boy.

At only 9 he entered the

U12 and dominated the division.

In his fi nal bout, he faced off with the current Australian number 1 ranked boy.

After a long tussle, Daniel threw him for half point with a well planned feint then followed it up with a lightning fast drop shoulder throw for a winning point and rolled over his opponent.

After the 3 referees awarded the bout, Daniel was called back to have the result reversed based on ‘the rolling’ was the opponents throw.

For a 9yr old, he took it well, saying that he now knows he can throw the Australian champion.

Neeson Naidoo maintained his dominance with his attacking style.

Although much younger than the opponents he kept them in a defensive mode, but was caught by a well-timed foot sweep and had to settle for a bronze medal.

Melinda Brown, after

having very sparse training during this HSC year, was defeated by the ACT entry in her opening bout.

Melinda went on to win all her next bouts via the repe-charge rounds, placing 3rd, stating that she will have no problems representing next year when again in full swing.

Central Coast p e r f o r m e d

credibly in the U25s Seven-a-Side Challenge, conducted at Belmont BC over the weekend of September 17 and 18, coming fourth and only just missing out on coming second.

A Seven-a-Side event is made up of seven players with one playing Singles, a team of Pairs and the others making up a team of Fours.

The Central Coast side was Darren Morrison Singles, Nathan Malloy and Chris Monk Pairs and Zac Robertson, Matt McGaw, John Hannan and Andrew Mercer Fours.

The Team Manager was U25 Coordinator Brett George.

Teams from a total of six zones throughout NSW

descended on Belmont Bowling Club to contest the event, which was held in a round robin format, each Zone playing each other.

Three games were played on the Saturday and two games on the Sunday.

Central Coast got off to a bad start, losing to Newcastle (Zone 2) in their fi rst game, but then had wins over the eventual winners Upper Hunter Manning (zone 6) and also Central West, fi nishing the fi rst day in equal 2nd place with Hunter Manning.

On the Sunday morning, Central Coast had a close victory over last year’s winners Illawarra, with a brilliant last bowl by Chris Monk to win the pairs.

That left Central Coast only one point behind the leading Newcastle side.

However, as so often happens in multiple game tournaments, Newcastle had a surprise loss in their last game, and Central Coast

failed to take advantage, also losing their last game to North West.

This opened the door for Upper Hunter Manning (Zone 6), who with two big wins on the Sunday came home strongly to be named the outright winners.

The Central Coast team won three out of its fi ve Singles games, two of its fi ve Pairs games and three of its Fours games, establishing itself as one of the leading contenders of the event.

Brett George was an inspirational leader of the side and set the standard by winning fi ve out of fi ve coin tosses.

The event was very well conducted and the facilities at Belmont B C were excellent.

It is hoped that this event will continue to grow in stature year by year with a growing number of Zones eager to take up the Challenge.

Central Coast bowlers found it

tough going in NSW Inter-Zone Sides Championship

It was always going to be a tough weekend when sixteen Zones from all parts of NSW gathered at Nelson Bay and Soldiers Point Bowling Clubs to contest the 2011 State NSW Inter-Zone Sides Championship from September 9 -11 2011.

The Central Coast side, made up of four teams of four, was on notice with a tough draw in the sectional rounds of three games coupled with tough weather conditions of blustery wind and rain in the opening round against the talented Sydney South West (Zone

12) side.John Roberts’ team of

Zac Robertson, Harley McDonald and Lee Trethowan recorded an outstanding 20-16 win, as did Darren Morrison’s team of Shane White, Tony Shoebridge and Dave Buttery 19-14, but their margins were not good enough to offset the losses of Aron Sherriff (14-23) and Dave Neilsen (15-33), to go down on the master scoreboard 86-68.

Round 2 was against an old and tough adversary in Newcastle (Zone 2), and whilst the Central Coast lads hit the front on the master scoreboard at the halfway mark, Aron Sherriff’s team of Adam

Pinkerton, Peter Freestone and Phil Flippence were the only ones to record a face saving 17 all draw, with all other teams recording small losses to go down by eleven shots 80-69 on the big board.

With two losses apiece, round 3 against Sydney South (Zone 13) was academic for both sides on a very unpredictable green that had all players guessing line and length.

However, Dave Neilsen’s team of Paul Williams, Peter Coombes and Miro Perovic chalked up their fi rst win 24-15 and Darren Morrison’s team recorded their second victory 20-19.

But again, it still wasn’t good enough to offset John Robert’s narrow loss to Wayne Turley 20-19 and Aron Sherriff’s 10-26 drubbing for a 73-80 loss on the big board.

For the Central Coast players, it was an early exit from a prestige State championship, that they have only managed to win twice, back in 1996 and 2006.

Perhaps in part on this occasion, the saving grace was that Sydney South West (Zone 12), who beat the Central Coast in round one in atrocious weather conditions went on to win the section and then their semi-fi nal against Illawarra (Zone 16) and became the 2011 champions in defeating Sydney North West (Zone 10) in the fi nal 75-65.

Central Coast M a r i n e r s

claimed the second edition of the Doug Turnbull Cup with a well deserved 3-nil victory over Bankstown City Lions at Jensen Park, Sefton on Wednesday September 8.

In their fi rst full hit out of the pre-season, the Mariners began brightly, racing to a two-goal lead courtesy of strikes by Qantas Olyroos captain Oliver Bozanic and striker Michael Baird inside the opening 10 minutes.

In fact, it took the Mariners just fi ve minutes to open the scoring in front of a crowd of approximately 300 people.

Having earned a direct free-kick 20 metres from goal, the crafty Bozanic stepped up to curl a sweet left footed shot thundering past Bankstown custodian Zlatko Joseski.

Clearly eager to press home their early advantage, it took the Yellow and Navy only another four minutes to double their lead.

A fl uent move down the left side resulted in Baird fi nding space just outside the box, with the attacker making no mistake in sending his powerful shot into the back of the net.

To their credit, Bankstown managed to plug their defence following their disappointing start to the match, and even began controlling a reasonable portion of possession.

Gaining confi dence, the Lions started to craft a number of half chances on home soil, however lacked the fi nal ball or killer touch to claw back their Hyundai A-League opponents.

Matt Simon went nearest to troubling the scorers before the break, slamming a fi erce drive against the post after a tidy back-heel by Baird opened the opportunity.

Mariners coach Graham Arnold made two changes at the half time interval, introducing New Zealand international Michael McGlinchey and Brad Porter in place of Baird and Pedj Bojic respectively.

These changes saw Troy Hearfi eld shift from right midfi eld to the point of the attack.

And it was the Kiwi McGlinchey who would make an almost instant impression on the game, netting the Mariners third with one of his fi rst touches.

With the ball cut back from the left side, McGlinchey drifted in from his post in right midfi eld to thrash the ball home on the half volley from the edge of the area.

On the bumpy surface the Mariners failed to create many clear-cut chances to extend their lead as the half wore on, however, fl uent periods of ball progression and maintenance ultimately pleased Arnold.

“I thought we did quite well on the diffi cult surface,” Arnold said.

“Our overall structure was very good, the new players

fi tted into our structure very well, and there were no injuries.

“It was a good hit out.” Having made a host

of changes in the second half, including introducing pacey National Youth League player Kwabena Appiah-Kubi, as well as Brad McDonald and Sam Gallagher to the game, Arnold said it was always his intention to give as many players game time as possible.

“It was important in our fi rst game of the pre-season to get as many minutes into the legs of as many players as possible.”

“Kwabena’s got pace, he’s got talent, and he’s just another youngster we’re not afraid to work with or give a chance to.”

The Doug Turnbull Cup was founded in memory of the late Doug Turnbull.

A Bankstown football stalwart, Doug was also the brother of Central Coast Mariners Chairman, Peter Turnbull.

Sunday September 11 saw the fi nal

games of the Central Coast Division Junior Rugby League season come to an end with the Grand Finals for 1st Division teams played at Blue Tongue Stadium.

The Roosters had 2 teams make the semis our 12/1s and 14/1s.

Unfortunately, the 12/1s were beaten in the fi nals by Terrigal 22-6 the previous weekend.

Our 14/1s were the sole Peninsula representative in the Grand-fi nals played over the weekend, making the Grand Final after beating Terrigal 18-12 in the Final.

Sunday saw them up against the undefeated and highly fancied Toukley Hawks.

The start to the preparation for the boys was a little disjointed, due to a large number of the team

away from training Tuesday night, playing school footy for BWSC, but Thursday night saw the team back to full strength to get a good ball work session under their belts.

The lead up on game day was a relaxed one, with the boys enjoying a BBQ breakfast cooked by committee members Mark Fuller, Scott Jones and Paul Haime at Woy Woy Leagues Club, sprinkled with some golden oldies in the comedy department from coach Mick.

After breakfast, the team boarded the bus for the ride to Blue Tongue Stadium.

On arrival at the ground, the boys were ready for business and came out all fi red up.

The boys played solidly in the fi rst half, with Sam Bovis making valuable ground early with his scoots from dummy half, which had the Toukley defence on the back foot and Rhys Kearns

causing trouble every time he had the ball in his hands.

Unfortunately, Brad Taylor had to leave the fi eld early on after succumbing to the fl u after battling gallantly during the week to be right for the game and the team also lost Liam Swan after receiving a late high shot.

Their defence was solid all fi rst half, with Toukley taking a narrow lead at the break, but Woy Woy were still fi rmly in the game.

The second half saw a much more determined and focused Toukley team come out “all guns a blazing” and the Woy Woy boys were unable to match them, with Toukley running out winners 31-12.

All the Woy Woy boys showed true grit throughout the game and tried hard until the fi nal whistle.

Pick of the Woy Woy players were Rhys Kearns who tried hard all game, and fullback Joe Williams who saved at least 2 tries, bought

the ball back from kicks at pace and troubled the Toukley defence whenever he was involved.

The way the team has represented the club and themselves and played the game all year is a credit to

them all and the coaching staff.

The Roosters also had a team entered in the relay race at half time of the under 16s with our team consisting of Ryan Donnelly 13/1s, Zac Simunovic 14/2s, Jayden

Beasley and Aaron Redhead 15/1s fi nishing 2nd, well done boys and thanks to your parents for getting you to the Stadium and cheering you on.

T20 cricket came to Mt Penang

on the weekend of 17/18 September and the Coast welcomed visiting teams from Manly, Sydney Tigers and Warringah for the annual festival of 20/20 cricket, in which Central Coast gave their r e p r e s e n t a t i v e players a chance for a pre-season hit-out against some different competition.

On a beautiful weekend, with the pitch and outfi eld immaculate, our Central

Coast team was the only one to win all three of its games.

In the opening game of the weekend, Warringah batted fi rst and amassed a total of 116 for the loss of 4 wickets.

Coast bowlers were brilliantly led by young Jordan O’Donnell with 2 for 10 off his 4 overs, and he was ably supported by Alex Patterson, who only conceded 12 runs and Jarrod Flint, Luke Sullivan and Jason Buckley.

In reply, the Central Coast reached the target in the 18th over, losing 3 wickets along the way.

Dane Hokin led the run chase with an entertaining and aggressive 52, while

Alex Patterson chimed in with a slashing 43 not out.

Sydney accounted for Manly, scoring 124 and dismissing Manly for 119.

In Saturday’s third game, Central Coast batted fi rst and smashed Manly’s attack to all corners, fi nishing with 6 for 180.

Once again, Dane Hokin was prominent with 32, as he and Adam Walsh got away to a fl ying start, scoring a 64 run partnership in 6 overs.

When Dane was out, Adam took over and then put on another 74 with Tim Bowring (37not out), before being dismissed for 71.

Manly were never in the game, fi nishing with 6 for 79 off their twenty overs.

Jarrad Flint with 2-21, Jordan O’Donnell 1-19, Luke Sullivan 1-16 and Darren Wotherspoon 1-8 controlled the game for the home side.

Sunday’s games saw a re-vamped Manly account for a stronger Warringah side, and Sydney and Warringah play a high-scoring thriller that saw the only century of the weekend to Brett Curry of Warringah.

Despite this, Sydney reached the target of 172 with 2 balls remaining.

It was good to see two past Central Coast players Craig DiBlasio and Dominic

Tonkin feature for Sydney with bat and ball.

In the fi nal game the Central Coast restricted Sydney to 95 thanks to a devastating spell of 4 overs of seriously fast bowling from Mark Smith, in which he took 4 wickets for 5 runs.

He was exceptionally well-supported by spinners Luke Diserens and Chris Archer and up-and-coming star fast bowlers Jordan O’Donnell and Jordan Freeman.

Ryan James took two catches to add to demonstrate the talents of our younger cricketers.

As the light faded, the home team ground out a win, reaching the target in the fi nal over thanks to 30 from Darren Wotherspoon, 16 from Jason Moore, 13 from Chris Becker and two lusty blows from Mark Smith to bring up the victory.

Coach Glenn Rowlands was very happy with the performances by all the players, and he’s looking forward to next year’s event when we once again show Sydney clubs that there is plenty of talent on the Central Coast.

Bowling Club regained the Millar Cup trophy this year after a very pleasant day of bowls.

The Millar Cup is an annual event played between Toukley Memorial Womens Bowling Club and Canton Beach Women’s Bowling Club.

The cup was donated many years ago by Margaret Millar’s husband when Margaret (affectionately known as Lou) passed away.

Ladies fours are played by players representing each club and then they go in for a light lunch and presentation of the magnifi cent perpetual trophy.

Association U10 Juniors took out the 2011 NSW Country Championship for the second year in a row at a two-day tournament held over the weekend of September 17 and 18 at Berkeley in the Illawarra.

NSW country teams included Newcastle, Central Coast, Illawarra Gold and Illawarra Blue.

In what was an exhilarating and intense event, the Coasties U10s were undefeated across all six games, played over the two days, scoring 100 runs.

Head Coach Brett Corrigan, was extremely pleased with the result.

“They’ve worked hard,

and all the training these pint sized baseballers put in over the winter, came together on the day and paid off.”

Under 10s Coasties players came from a cross section of Central Coast Junior Baseball clubs including the Rebels, Indians, Lions, Bears and Wildcats and even as far afi eld as Tamworth.

“When working with the U10s we get to lay

the groundwork for future representative teams,” commented David Bryant, CCBA President.

The Central Coast Baseball Association is running a free Try Baseball day on Sunday 25 September at two locations - Adcock Park, West Gosford and Watanobbi Oval, Wyong starting at 9.00am.

Central Coast Mariners remain

unbeaten in their 2011/12 Hyundai A-League pre-season campaign following a 1-nil victory over Illawarra Premier League Champions Dandaloo FC on Sunday September 11.

In the second game of phase three of their preparations for the season proper, the Yellow and Navy put together a solid display on a bumpy surface in Cringila, near Wollongong.

The triumph extends the Mariners’ winning run to seven friendly matches, including an historic victory over Scottish giants Glasgow Celtic in the clubs’ fi rst ever international friendly in early July.

Nevertheless, Central Coast could, and perhaps should have been behind in the opening minute of play without having touched the ball.

Dandaloo, clearly eager to test themselves against Hyundai A-League opposition, broke immediately from the kick-off, with only a miscued fi nish preventing the Mariners from going a goal down after less than 30 seconds.

Having started on the back foot, the Mariners began to work their way into the match and created their fi rst real opportunity of the encounter after 15 minutes.

Neat interplay down the right side involving Brad Porter, Pedj Bojic and Michael Baird ended with Michael McGlinchey fi ring an arching left footed drive just over the Dandaloo goal.

A minute later the Mariners went close again.

With Bojic swinging an inch-perfect cross in from wide on the right, Baird did well to evade his marker; however, his headed effort sailed centimetres over the bar.

It took the Yellow and Navy another ten minutes to craft a clear-cut opportunity to break the deadlock, but when they did, the chances came thick and fast.

Within the space of three minutes Baird struck the woodwork twice, while Matt Simon sent a crisp, low drive just wide of Mitchell Blowes’ right post.

Soon after, however, the Mariners would get the reward their dominance ultimately deserved.

With Baird fi ring in an accurate pass from the left side, Simon controlled the ball before sending a powerful right footed shot past Blowes.

Intent on giving as many

players crucial game time in the lead up to round one as possible, Mariners boss Graham Arnold made two changes at the break, introducing Qantas Olyroos captain Oliver Bozanic and captain Alex Wilkinson in place of Rostyn Griffi ths and Brad Porter respectively.

But it was goalscorer Simon who came closest to adding to the score-line immediately after halftime.

Bursting through the centre, Simon again fi red low to the right of Blowes, but while he beat the ‘keeper, the attackers’ shot also evaded the goal.

As in previous practice matches, Arnold again rotated his bench in the second 45, keen to experiment with different players in varying roles as well as add minutes to the legs of his chargers.

For the second time in a week, youngster Kwabena Appiah-Kubi earned a chance from the pine, while Brad McDonald and Sam Gallagher also saw game time.

Dandaloo, boasting former Hyundai A-League players Noel Spencer and Alvin Ceccoli, as well as NYL player Sam Munro, all of whom have played for the Mariners, proved stiff resistance in the second half.

Particularly, it was goalkeeper Blowes who made an impression, thwarting goal-bound efforts from Baird and Troy Hearfi eld as the match wound down.

After the game, Arnold was pleased with the hit-out against “a very good side”.

“The scoreline probably fl attered them as we had a lot more chances than they did, however, either poor fi nishing or good goalkeeping, combined with a patchy surface made it diffi cult,” Arnold said.

“I was delighted with our defensive performance.

“We restricted Dandaloo to probably one chance in the fi rst minute.

“Even on a very poor surface, our football and combinations are coming together very well and we’re looking forward to the next four games before our fi rst competition match against Brisbane,” he said.

A powerful fi nish by attacking

mid fi elder Adriano Pellegrino was enough for the Central Coast Mariners to secure a 1-nil victory against Perth Glory at Knox Grammar School, Wahroonga on Sunday September 18.

The former Perth ace struck from close range just before half time, fi nally breaking the deadlock after Glory custodian Danny Vukovic produced a string of top class saves to deny the Mariners in the fi rst 45.

Having been cut-down by Adam Hughes on the edge of the area, Pellegrino rifl ed home from six yards after Matt Simon’s strong free kick defl ected off the wall and fortuitously into his path.

The Mariners could have gone into the break with a commanding lead, hadn’t it been for the cat-like refl exes of former Yellow and Navy shot stopper Vukovic, who denied his former side on numerous occasions throughout the fi rst stanza.

Just before the half hour, Michael Baird latched on to a perfectly weighted cross from Simon. Heading goalwards from two yards, Vukovic reacted sharply to thwart Baird’s effort and keep the scores level.

Minutes later the Glory keeper again acted decisively to deny Baird.

Released down the left, Baird fi red a powerful strike at goal with Vukovic dropping quickly to again frustrate the Mariners’ number 17.

Ten minutes later, Vukovic was again the saviour for Glory, this time diving to his left to foil Simon after the striker’s shot was destined to nestle in the back of the net.

But even an inspired Vukovic couldn’t manage to stop Pellegrino from opening the scoring just before the break.

Latching onto Simon’s defl ected free kick, Pellegrino made no mistake in scoring what would prove to be the games’ solitary goal.

Both coaches made numerous changes in the

second stanza, with Glory mentor Ian Ferguson introducing the likes of Brazilian Andrezinho to his line-up as he switched to a conventional four-four-two system.

Mariners boss Graham Arnold also opted to utilise the talent on his bench, handing valuable game time to Daniel McBreen, Adam Kwasnik and Brad Porter.

With the best chance of the second half, Porter fi red well over Vukovic’s goal from the edge of the area on 88 minutes after a smart ball from wide on the left found the returning utility.

After the match, Arnold said he was satisfi ed with the Mariners’ play, particularly in the fi rst half.

“Today was a good hit-out for us, and I thought in the fi rst half we went exceptionally well,” he said.

“We still have a lot more work to do but again, it was important we got minutes in the legs of a lot of players against a quality opposition like Perth,” he said.

“I’m expecting Perth to be a top four side this season.

“They’ve recruited extremely well and you could see by the players that started the match, and also from the players that came on, that they’re one of the teams to beat in the league this season.”

Arnold also offered praise for his number 10 Pellegrino, who he believes could provide some telling strikes for the team as the season unfolds.

“I’m expecting a lot of Pellers (Pellegrino),” he said.

“He’s the type of player who gets himself in good goal scoring positions, making good late runs into the area.

He could get us half a dozen goals this season.

Central Coast Marlins will open

its 2011/12 Sydney Major League Baseball campaign against the Ryde-Eastwood Hawks this Saturday night at ELS Park, Ryde.

The 1st grade team will again feature an impressive calibre of local players, some of which have been applying their trade in overseas professional leagues and American colleges during the Australian winter.

Six current Marlins also

played in last summer’s inaugural Australian Baseball League, and that could rise to as many as eight for this season.

Returning club and 1st grade coach Shaun Smith will have the advantage of lining up professionals Mitch Dening, Boss Moanaroa, Moko Moanaroa (Boston Red Sox Minor Leaguers) and Craig Anderson (Netherlands).

This season will also see the return of Tom O’Gorman (Northwestern Oklahoma State University) and Aiden Francis (Georgia State

University) after a four year stint in the USA.

Francis and Craig Anderson will lead a strong pitching staff and will be joined by fellow Australian League pitchers Paul Anderson (Sydney Blue Sox) and new signing Jarrett Commane (Canberra Cavalry).

Commane is a huge addition for the Marlins, as he is the reigning Sydney Major League pitcher of the year.

Sydney Blue Sox catcher Pat Maat will be the heart of the Marlins offence, and

will be strongly supported by Dan Smith, O’Gorman and Mick Ashton.

The club will again consist of fi ve teams: 1st to 3rd grade, Under-18s and a Women’s Team.

The games are played on a home and away basis from the Central Coast in the north, Cronulla in the east and Campbelltown in the west.

The season will commence in September 2011 running through to March 2012.

First grade starts at 7:30pm.
