How do students learn? How do students learn?

..It is beyond the space allotted here to summarize the massive amount ofliterature and research on the subject. However, the following important andrelevant points have been made by educational researchers repeatedly: When students are actively participating in explaining, thinking, and analyzingthey learn more. If you accept the above, then it is the instructors primary task to makelearning interactive.

Set the pace for the class: explain the learning goals, model the behaviordesired, then make the student the teacher. The previous presentation wascrafted by my students. I am very proud of them. I act as the Socraticquestioner, the analyzer, the one who points out problems and limitations, theclarifier, and (of course) the one who will correct errors as well as addssupplementary information and personal perspective. Naturally, many, students

if not the vast majority, will need time and guidance in developing these skills.Thats also the job of the instructor.Let your students fly and make them the teacher. You may be pleasantlysurprised with the results.~ Dr. Juan R. Cspedes, Ph.D.
