The Center for the Performing Arts at Penn State receives state arts funding support through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state

agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

TIMBER!You can almost smell the fresh-cut pine logs and the sweat of lumber-jacks as you watch the members of Cirque Alfonse jive to traditional folk music. The young circus troupe hails from a small town called Saint-Alphonse-Rodriguez in the province of Québec, Canada. They have drawn upon their country roots to find the inspiration for this unique project. Timber! is off the beaten track. The show’s creators designed unusual acrobatic apparatus from resources available to them on their family farm. The experience feels and smells authentic. The atmosphere is hyper-festive. The talented acrobats and musicians create a colorful scene with energetic feats of agility and strength. Timber! is inspired by the exploits of the first North American lumberjacks, loggers, and farmers.

CirQuE AlFonsE Cirque Alfonse’s founding members have worked with some of the most renowned “nouveau cirque” companies in the world, including Montreal’s Les 7 doigts de la main, Cirque du Soleil, Cirkus Cirkör of Sweden, Cirque Starlight of Switzerland, and the Montréal dance com-pany Bouge de là. The company features professional acrobats from the École nationale de cirque de Montréal, a professional dancer, an ex-skiing champion, and three talented and versatile musicians. This brave group of performers is blazing a creative path that no one has yet dared to explore—blending the arts and circus techniques with the most pic-turesque facets of traditional Québec folklore. In 2006, the company launched its first show, La Brunante. Timber! is Cirque Alfonse’s second production.

ANTOINE CARABINIER-LÉPINE (acrobat)

Antoine Carabinier-Lépine received his diploma from the École nationale de cirque de Montréal. A multidisciplinary artist and virtuoso, he excels with the German wheel, Cyr wheel, acrobatics, juggling, and music. For past eleven years, Carabinier-Lépine has col-laborated on numerous shows and artistic projects including Cirque Éloize Nomade; Cirkus Cirkör 99% Unknown; Cirque du Soleil Celebrity Cruise Project; Copenhagen Royal Opera Maskarade, and Les 7 doigts de la main Traces.

JULIE CARABINIER-LÉPINE (dancer)

Julie Carabinier-Lépine is from Saint-Alphonse-Rodriguez. At the age of 8, she was initiated into the world of classical bal-let, modern dance, and theatre. She received her diploma in con-temporary dance interpretation from L’école de danse contem-poraine de Montréal. She went on to dance for choreographers Sonia Biernath, Manuel Roque, Mélanie Demers, Amélie Lévesque Demers; and for Bouge de là with Hélène Langevin and Mandala Sitù. Carabinier-Lépine toured Europe with the Swiss circus company Salto Natale.

JONATHAN CASAUBON (acrobat)

Since the age of 7, Jonathan Casaubon has been perfecting gymnastics. He was a regular at his neighborhood gymnastics club. After a few years of coach-ing he was able to reach competi-

tive levels. He earned his diploma from the École nationale de cirque de Montréal, specializing in the teeterboard and trampo-line. Casaubon taught circus arts in Switzerland before joining the Starlight Circus as assistant to the artistic director. He has worked with several other circus troupes, including Cirque du Soleil, Salto Natale, Knie, and Les 7 doigts de la main.

FRANCIS ROBERGE (acrobat)

Francis Roberge was born in Québec and has worked as a lumberjack and a guide for the Canadian national rafting team. Roberge trained at the Québec City Circus School, where he specialized in hand-to-hand, ban-quine, and axe handling. He then gained experience with several troupes, including Cirque Deus ex machina, Cirque du Soleil, and Compagnie Rasposo.

ALAIN CARABINIER (actor)

Alain Carabinier was born in Switzerland, where he was an alpine skier and soccer player. He travelled around the world before settling in Saint-Alphonse-Rodriguez, where he is a soccer trainer and a wallpaper hanger.

JOSIANNE LAPORTE (musician)

Josianne Laporte began studying classical percussion at the age of 8. After receiving her diploma in music from the Université du Québec à Montréal, she went on tour with musicians Gino Vanelli, Dan Bigras, and Isabelle Boulay.

She travelled the world as a musi-cian in Cirque Éloize Nomade and has appeared in several televi-sion shows. Her band, François Roy et les As de la Frime, was awarded second place at the United Kingdom’s Rock Festival of Richmond. She also performed in Cirque Alfonse La Brunante.

DAVID SIMARD (musician and musical composer)

A native of Québec, David Simard is a multi-instrumentalist who specializes in traditional Canadian music. He earned his degree in jazz guitar tech-nique and traditional music at the Lanaudière Regional College in Québec. Whether on the banjo, guitar, resonator guitar, or violin, Simard plays mostly jazz and old fiddle tunes.

ANDRÉ GAGNÉ (musician)

André Gagné is a musician and singer from Québec. He stud-ied jazz guitar at St. Lawrence College in Ontario. He is a found-ing member of the music group, La Giroflée, with whom he has travelled on tour throughout his native Québec and in Europe. Gagné created the musical arrangements for Cirque Alfonse La Brunante.

ALAIN FRANCOEUR (director)

Alain Francoeur has a degree in dramatic arts from the Université du Québec á Montréal. He first worked as a dancer and actor in experimental theatre before mov-ing on to become a director and choreographer. Francoeur has

worked with several companies, including L’Agora de la danse of Montréal. He directed Cirque Éloize Cirque Orchestre and Cirque Alfonse La Brunante.

NICOLAS DESCÔTEAUX (lights and props conceptor)

Nicolas Descôteaux received his diploma from the theatre pro-gram at Sainte-Thérèse College in Québec. He has designed more than sixty lighting creations and worked with internationally renowned artists Robert Lepage, Marie Chouinard, Kristian Fredric, Denis Marleau, and Daniele Finzi Pasca. He’s worked with the troupes Cirque Éloize and Cirque du Soleil.

DAVID BOULANGER (musical composer)

David Boulanger studied violin and jazz interpretation at Saint-Laurent College in Montréal before joining the traditional music group La part du Quéteux, which won Best Album for Traditional Music at the Folk Canadian Music Awards in 2007. He went on to work with the folk band La Bottine Souriante as a violinist. He joined Cirque Alfonse in 2006.

The Los Angeles company performs an evolved version of the skateboard-inspired Transit Space, a Center for the Performing Arts co-commission that had its world premiere at Penn State in 2012.

The program also features Fluid Infinities, a 2013 production set on an abstract dome and accompanied by Philip Glass’ Symphony No. 3.
