CFI has established centers throughout the world which provide a means of delivering educational programs and services on a local level and provide a venue for like-minded individuals to meet and share experiences. We vigorously object to government support of religion and the use of religious dogma to justify public policy; we do not oppose the free exercise of religion. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 265:30 pm FLATLAND The Movie2007 - 35 min. - Produced by Edwin A. AbbottThis movie is an animated film inspired by Edwin A. Abbott's classic novel, Flatland. Set in a world of only two dimensions inhabited by sentient geo-metrical shapes, the story follows Arthur Square and his ever-curious granddaughter Hex. When a mysterious visitor arrives from Spaceland, Arthur and Hex must come to terms with the truth of the third dimension.6:05 pm FLATLAND 2: SPHERELANDThe creators of "Flatland: The Movie" return to Flatland for another adventure beyond the third dimension, based on Edwin A. Abbot's "Flatland" and Dionys Burger's "Sphereland". 6:45 pm An Introduction to... Humanism6 min. Produced by Peter BrietbartHumanism is sometimes mistaken for a form of religion, or something which is very complex. Here, some well-known humanists explain that all human-ism really is, is people wanting to live ethical and happy lives, thinking for themselves, without religion imposing its own morals on them which are not necessarily compatible with living ethically today.7:00 pm KumaréKumaré is a wise guru from the East who indoc-trinated a group of followers in the West. Kumaré, however, is not real--he is the alter ego of American filmmaker Vikram Gandhi, who impersonated a spiritual leader for the sake of a social experiment designed to challenge one of the most widely ac-cepted taboos: that only a tiny "1%" can connect the rest of the world to a higher power.

8:30 pm In God We TeachProduced by Vic LosickAre teachers allowed to express their personal opinions in the classroom? Are teachers allowed "academic freedom"? And can competing theories be taught alongside evolution in a public classroom? These and other questions are the focus of the feature-length documentary, "In God We Teach," which follows the "separation of church and state" controversy played out in a very public feud between a high school student and his history teacher in Kearny, NJ.9:35 pm Q&A with Vic Losick Producer of In God We Teach25 min. Stay after In God We Teach and hear com-ments on the making of this documentary directly from Producer, Vic Losick. 10:00 pm Twelve Angry Men1957 - 96 min. Directed by Sidney LumetThe defense and the prosecution have rested and the jury is filing into the jury room to decide if a young Spanish-American is guilty or innocent of murdering his father. What begins as an open and shut case of murder soon becomes a mini-drama of each of the jurors' prejudices and preconceptions

about the trial, the accused, and each other. Based on the play, all of the action takes place on the stage of the jury room. Stars: Henry Fonda, Lee J. Cobb and Martin Balsam

WillametteLive.com reports "that funda-mentalist Christian group the Good News Club has been using Salem-Keizer elemen-tary schools as the basis for its outreach to community school children. Constitutional scholars as well as local citizens are chal-lenging the practice."A local mother, Lisa Godwin, was frustrated at having fliers advertising the Club handed to her daughter directly by her teacher. Ms. Godwin had complained multiple times to the district that the involvement of school personnel gave the impression the school sanctioned the club."Good News Clubs operate in the United States under the umbrella of the Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF), the larg-est children’s ministry in the world. The club’s goal is to convert children to thier form of Christianity with an entirely literal interpretation of the Bible. It primarily uses public elementary school facilities to

reach children and is currently involved in 11 of our district’s schools."Holding more than 3400 meetings per week in schools across the nation, the Good News Club has the stated goal of being present in “each of the 43 public elementary schools in the Salem-Keizer School District.” Bruce Adams, Director of the Columbia chapter of Americans United, is involved, and has forwarded to CFI information from Attorney Eric Cernyar, who several years ago worked on behalf of Good News Club, but now believes that this organiza-tion is abusive and should be prevented from contacting school children. A website now exists to assist those fighting against Good News Clubs and their violations of the separation of church and state, often with the co-operation of public school administrators and teachers:www.GoodNewsClubs.info

Good News Clubs are not good news in Salem schools

This year the Foundation Beyond Belief joined the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night Walk campaign in an effort to fight cancer. The foundation’s leader for this project is Todd Stiefel, who operates the Stiefel Freethought Foundation, a non-profit private foundation provid-ing money and strategy consulting to the freethought movement. During this podcast he discusses the ef-fort to raise $1 million for this cause, describes how cancer has touched his life, and gives advice on how to do

good. Walkers will participate in lei-surely evening two-to-three-mile walks this autumn, the exact date and time depends on the location. Participants ask for donations from friends and family, make online donations, and hold fundraising events. Listen to Alan Litchfield's podcast, participate in the cause – or both:http://www.malcon-tentsgambit.com/2012/10/01/atheists-help-kick-the-snot-out-of-cancer/To order a t-shirt: http://pages.lightthenight.org/oswim/PortlndL12/CFIPortlandFBB

A new global survey on religiosity by WIN-Gallup International has two big findings:First, the United States has gone from being 1% godless in 2005 to 5% in 2012. (The percentage of people simply calling themselves non-religious is 30%, significantly higher than ever before.) That jumps us up quite a bit on the Global Atheism Index:The other finding is that atheists are now 13% of the world population, an increase of 9% since 2005:

… the number of self-declared atheists in the world has risen by 9% since the measure was last taken in 2005.The massive poll, conducted in 57 countries (not, apparently, including Britain) among 51,000 people asked a single question “Irrespective of whether you attend a place of worship or not, would you say you are a religious person, not a religious person or a convinced atheist?”

It shows that on average 59% of the world said that they think of themselves as religious, whereas 23% think of themselves as not religious and 13% think of themselves as

convinced atheists. Naturally there are enormous variations from country to country. What does all this mean? For America, where only 60% of the population calls themselves “religious,” and an additional 30% calls themselves “non-religious,” politicians are making a big mistake by ignoring us during election seasons. As philanthropist Todd Stiefel pointed out in an email, “they go after Jews (1%), African Americans, (12.6%) and Hispanics (16.3%) like crazy, but [the] non-religious+atheist crowd (35%) is larger than those three groups combined (29.9%).”
