Franklin & Marshall Diplomats First Year of Basketball: 1899-1900

All-Time Record: 1206-840

There were a lot of things that went right for the Diplomats in 2008-09. F&M finished first in the Conference regular season, earning the right to host the Centennial tournament. The Blue and White was selected to participate in the NCAA tournament and made the most of the invitation, winning four games to reach the Final Four for the second time this decade. But there was one thing missing … a Centennial Conference championship. Franklin & Marshall finished 26-7 a year ago with three of those losses coming at the hands of Gettysburg, including one in the CC title game. With the return of four starters and eight of the top 10 players from a year ago, the Diplomats are primed to bring the Centennial trophy back to Lancaster for the first time since 2004. F&M is led by the potent 1-2 combination of forward James McNally and guard Georgio Milligan. McNally (pictured, top) averaged 16.0 points and 7.7 rebounds on his way to first-team All-Centennial and second-team All-Middle Atlantic region honors. A 2010 preseason honorable mention All-America pick, he recorded eight double-doubles last year and scored 20 or more points eight times. Milligan (pictured, bottom) was the Middle Atlantic Region Rookie of the Year after a freshman season that saw him average 13.5 points and 5.2 assists per game. He became the first freshman in Conference history to earn first-team All-Centennial honors. Mike Baker will join McNally in the frontcourt. He was an honorable mention All-CC forward who averaged 10.2 points and 7.5 rebounds per outing. Anthony Brooks will line up with Milligan in the backcourt after averaging 10.5 points per game. The fifth starter spot could go to a rookie as 6-8 freshmen Kevin Henry and Hayk Gyokchyan contend for time in the post. Steve Tolliver and Sal Salvati will provide quality depth at guard, while freshmen Brandon Backford and Alex Valencia will also push for time. Franklin & Marshall enters the season as the prohibitive favorite and the team to beat in the Conference. The Diplomats’ concern could be living up to their own and others’ expectations.

Gettysburg Bullets First Year of Basketball: 1900-01

All-Time Record: 1149-1022

A new day is dawning over the Battlefield. The defending Centennial champion Bullets lost four senior starters to graduation - a quartet that compiled a 71-37 record with two trips to the NCAA tournament. But if you can only return one starter from a championship team, it’s nice to have that player be the reigning Conference Player of the Year. Gettysburg junior center Andrew Powers was a third-team All-America selection a year ago, after averaging 18.2 points and 7.4 rebounds. A preseason third-team All-America choice, he is just 75 points shy of the 1,000-point mark after only two seasons. Joining Powers up front is Kevin Kennedy who averaged over 20 minutes per game last season, averaging 5.6 points and 3.2 rebounds while shooting nearly 43 percent from beyond the arc. Chip Naddaff and Tim Lang will also contend for a starting berth. Brendan Hager is the heir apparent at point guard. He had a 1.74 assists-to-turnover ratio last winter. Paul Crone could join him in the backcourt. A pair of freshmen - forward Christian Bors and Alez Zurn - could also push for playing time. The Bullets still have the respect of the Conference coaches, who selected the Orange and Blue for fourth in the preseason Centennial poll. How quickly this young group comes together around Powers could decide if Gettysburg returns to the Conference tournament for the seventh straight time.

The Fords qualified for the five-team Centennial tournament last season and came within a final shot of advancing to the final four. But it will take a young group of players to make the next step, as Haverford graduated six seniors. Two starters are back in the fold in forward Sam Permutt and guard Matthew Palmer. Permutt (pictured, top) averaged 10.0 points and 6.0 rebounds to lead the Fords in both categories last winter. Palmer (pictured, bottom) averaged just 5.0 points but was second on the team in assists and three-point goals. Ian Goldberg and Doug Edelman also averaged over 10 minutes per game. Goldberg averaged 4.8 points and knocked down 21 threes from the backcourt, while Edelman contributed 2.3 points and 2.1 rebounds per game in the frontcourt. Bo Friddell could also contribute up front. Haverford will look to some freshmen to contribute as well in wings Cameron Baker and Alex Zandi. The Fords have been to the Centennial tourney in each of the last three “odd-numbered” years, but has not qualified in an “even” year since 2004. Haverford led the Conference in scoring defense last winter and may need a repeat performance to “even” the score in 2010 and return to the dance.

The Blue Jays never hit on all cylinders last winter, losing 10 of their final 13 games to close at 12-13 for the first losing season in 15 years and third in coach Bill Nelson’s 23 seasons. Three starters are back in the fold for Hopkins who could also use a turnaround in the health department. Andrew Farber-Miller (pictured, top) is the big man up front. The 6-8 senior averaged 12.5 points and 6.1 rebounds while shooting 50.3 percent from the floor and blocking 18 shots a year ago. Mike Henrici and John Alberici could see starting time in the frontcourt. Henrici averaged 8.5 points and 3.7 rebounds and shot a team-best 52.3 percent from the field. Alberici missed the final 19 games of last season with an injury. His size will cause opponents problems in the paint. Josh DeLott will also contend for time. Senior Pat O’Connell (pictured, bottom) is the headliner in the backcourt. He averaged 8.2 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists while also registering 35 steals. Tim McCarty will contend for a starting berth. He played in 24 games last season, leading all JHU freshmen with 4.6 points and 1.7 rebounds per game, while shooting 38 percent from three-point range. Sean O’Connor could run the point while freshman Adam Spengler could compete for time. Hopkins had qualified for the Conference tournament in each of the last five seasons before last year’s stumble. The Blue Jays should bounce back and be in the hunt for the playoffs come February.

The Green Terror reached the Conference semifinals last season for the first time since 1995. That squad had seven seniors and a pair of juniors that set a program-record with 18 victories. Two-thirds of that unit has departed, leaving behind a young squad with eight freshmen and three sophomores. The youthful group will have to come of age early for McDaniel to make another run at a first-round tournament bye. Miguel Jones (pictured, top) is the headliner in the backcourt. A second-team All-Centennial pick last winter, he averaged 9.0 points and made a team-high 28 three-point goals. Mike Jarboe saw action in all 26 games, averaging 3.3 points per game last season and could join Jones as could Marcus Dyson. Louis Sarris-Grau and Steve Wilson lead the frontcourt. Sarris-Grau (pictured, bottom) had a strong rookie campaign with 8.5 points and 3.6 rebounds per game, while shooting 52.4 percent from the floor. Wilson was one of the Terror’s leading rebounders at 6.2 caroms per game when a shoulder injury shelved him after six games. Soph Woody Butler adds his 6-8 frame from the football team to provide depth, as will rookies Michael McClain and Chad Eckenrode. McDaniel’s success in 2009 was predicated on good defense (60.2 pts. per game, 2nd in CC) and protecting the ball (+3.15 turnover margin). The Terror will have to ask a lot of their youngsters as it searches for a third straight winning season - something not done on The Hill since 1981-82-83.

The 2008-09 season marked an end of one era at Muhlenberg, but also may have marked a beginning as well. Dave Madeira retired after 22 seasons on the ‘Berg bench where he recorded 311 victories. Now it’s Scott McClary’s turn, as he returns to his alma mater to take over a squad that has designs on a Centennial championship. The Mules’ strength is down low with the return of All-CC picks Peter Barnes and Spencer Liddic. Barnes (pictured, top), a second-team All-Centennial selection, led the team in scoring (12.1), rebounding (8.8), field goal percentage (57.9) and blocked shots (50). Liddic (pictured, bottom) was just the eighth freshman in the Conference’s 16-year history to earn All-Conference recognition, earning honorable mention. He averaged 11.6 points and 7.1 rebounds in his rookie year. Wing Ryan Foster also received All-CC honorable mention, averaging 11.5 points and leading the team with 56 three-pointers. The backcourt is headed by Brian Frankoski and Evan Tozer. Frankoski chipped in 5.3 points per game and handed out 72 assists, while Tozer added 7.9 points per outing. Freshman Rob Berish and Ryan Lagomarsino could also see time Muhlenberg finished 16-11 a year ago - its best since 2002 - with a junior-dominated team and lost two of those games by a combined three points to “Elite Eight” teams (F&M, DeSales). The Mules have not reached the Conference title game since 2001 and have not won the title since 1998. This could be the year that Muhlenberg returns to the Centennial promised land.

If it could have gone wrong for the Garnet last season, it did, as injuries, lack of experience and lack of depth all combined for a disappointing campaign. Now Swarthmore is back to health, its numbers are up, and its first .500 season since 1997 and a trip to the CC playoffs are the goals. Seniors Matt Allen and Danny Walker are the returning starters in the backcourt. Allen (pictured, top) averaged 9.1 points per game and led the team in assists (2.8), while Walker (pictured, bottom) led the squad in scoring (10.6) and rebounding (5.1). Ryan Carmichael returns at small forward. He shot 33 percent from the arc, averaging 8.8 points per contest. Soph Michael Giannangeli and freshmen Sean Conroe and Jordan Martinez will also push for time. Sam Lacy is the lone returning frontcourt player. He averaged 7.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and blocked 45 shots a year ago. Newcomers could play a major role up front for the Garnet, including Will Gates, Eugene Prymak and Ramsey Walker. The Garnet won two of its final three games last season, allowing just 48 ppg down the stretch. If Swarthmore can continue to play good defense and the talented recruiting class can step up to the collegiate game, 2010 could be interesting in Tarble Pavilion.

After 10 consecutive trips to the Centennial tournament, including four titles since 2003, the Bears stumbled to a 12-13 finish a year ago. The last time UC finished under .500 (2002), it came back the next season to win the Conference with a 21-7 record. This team can do the same. A pair of returning guards - Remy Cousart and Matt Hilton - have been selected as honorable mention preseason All-Americas. Cousart (pictured, top), an honorable mention All-CC guard last season, averaged 10.6 points and led the squad in rebounding with 7.9 caroms per contest. He led the Conference in assists with 149 and recorded three triple-doubles in 2009. Hilton (pictured, bottom) saw action in just eight games a year ago after suffering a broken foot. He averaged 16.6 points per game last season and 12.6 in 2008. A deadly outside shooter, Hilton shot 46 percent from beyond the arc as a soph. Senior Kevin McGarvey also provides quality minutes, while freshman Matt Donahue will also contribute. Swingman Keith Page is the veteran among eight players that stand 6-5 or taller for Ursinus. He averaged 11.6 points and 4.7 rebounds last season. Sophs Mike Walther and JJ Rapczynski each averaged over 10 minutes per game as rookies and will also push for time. Newcomers Kevin Janowski and Jon Ward could see significant time as well. Ursinus is among the most up-tempo offenses in the Conference that was second in the CC at 74.8 points per game last season. If the Bears can improve on defense and avoid the injury bug, UC could be right in the mix come Centennial tournament time.

2010 Centennial Conference Men’s Basketball Guide - 40

Washington Shoremen First Year of Basketball: 1912-13

All-Time Record: 1019-967-1

Last year, the Shoremen surprised most Centennial “experts,” ignoring preseason predictions of a ninth-place finish and staying in the playoff hunt until the final day of the regular season. Now, with three starters back from a 12-13 squad, Washington looks for its first winning season since 2001 and a trip to the CC tournament. Senior captains Andrew Chambers and Alan Kines return after both averaging in double figures a year ago. Chambers (pictured, top) earned honorable mention All-Centennial honors after contributing 10.6 points and 4.5 rebounds, while Kines tossed in 10.1 points and shot 35 percent from beyond the arc. James Whall missed the first eight games of the season due to injury but came back for 15 starts and averaged 5.7 points per game, while Chris Olsen saw action in all 25 games, chipping in 3.6 points per outing. Kevin Breslin and Sal Schittino head the backcourt. Breslin (pictured, bottom) averaged 9.3 points and 4.2 rebounds as a freshman, while Schittino averaged 6.6 points in just 11 minutes per game, knocking down 38 percent of his three-point attempts. Freshman Wes Bill could also contribute. The up-tempo Shoremen have the pieces in place to make a run at the Conference tournament.
