MECHANIC Recently the Prep children from Good News Lutheran School in Middle Park were filmed by Channel 10 for their early childhood program, Wurrawhy.

Originally only one episode was to be filmed but Channel 10 enjoyed working with the students so much that they returned another two times.

The episodes, which will screen next year, covered the topics of bubbles, sound and a paleontological dig.

Prep teacher, Heidi Hansen, was extremely proud of her students and said that the students really enjoyed being involved and seeing how a television show was made.

Listen to those wailful westerly winds but don’t feel unhappy, we have the ‘Ekka’ and Seniors Week Activities throughout August to look forward to.

Our General Meeting will be held at the Jindalee Bowls Club on Tuesday 6th August at 9.30am and will be immediately followed by our 2013 Annual General Meeting. We will sadly lose some Committee Members but also gain new Committee Members. We won’t have hot dogs but instead a very nice morning tea to start the day off. We invite you to join our 100+ Members and enjoy either a guest speaker or entertainer each alternate month.

Our Coach Trip to St Bernard’s at Mt Tambourine was our ‘Christmas in July’ outing. We had a full bus where everyone really enjoyed their special Christmas Lunch.

On Thursday 15th National Seniors Australia is hosting a FREE “Election Priorities Forum” at the Jindalee Bowls Club 9.30am Morning Tea and 10am for the Forum chaired by our CEO – Michael O’Neill. The Guest Speakers are all candidates from political parties in the Oxley Federal Electorate. This meeting is open to the General Public and everyone is invited to attend and to ask questions.

The highlight for August will be “Seniors Week (17 – 24) which is always full of activities to suit everybody. Centenary National Seniors are planning on hosting a special ‘Chicken Licken’ BBQ & Salads Lunch’ on Tuesday 20th, 10am at Rocks Riverside Park, Counihan St., 17 Mile Rocks to celebrate. COTA is sponsoring this activity and therefore it is open to all Seniors, but you need to bring your own drinks and a chair to sit on.

How about hopping out of bed these cold Monday mornings and coming along to our ‘Steady Steps’ exercise classes held at 9am at Middle Park Uniting Church Hall or attend our ‘Zumba Gold’ classes held at the same venue each Wednesday at 9.15am. Everyone is welcome to both of these activities. Our ‘MahJong’ Members get together on 1st and 8th at the Mt Ommaney Library where we warm up, so don’t be shy, we will teach you how to play.

Monica chooses the best plays and concerts for our enjoyment and we have a couple of shows to attend this month.

Each month our Members enjoy a good evening meal at a nice local restaurant. This is mainly for the benefit of the Members who are not able to come to daytime activities but don’t want to miss out on the companionship of other people their own age and interests. Seniors start at 50 years of age, so we can look forward to many years of activities and fun. We also meet for a ‘Morning Tea and chat’ next to Betty Beans at the Mt Ommaney Food Court, on the last Tuesday each month at 10am. We’d love to meet you there.

I would love to welcome you at the door of the Jindalee Bowls Club on the first Tuesday of each month and introduce you to ‘Life after Work’. For more details ring 3376 1986.

We’ve all heard the saying “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade”. It’s a saying I have always liked, being the optimist that I am, as it implies the need to make the best of something and turn something sour in our lives into something sweet.

I don’t know how many of you have made lemonade but it’s a family favourite in our house on those 40 something summer days when plain water just doesn’t quench your thirst.

If you have made lemonade at home, you’ll know that you need more than just lemons. You also need water and sugar, and maybe a little mint if you have it growing in the garden.

Have you ever not got the ratio of water, lemon and sugar quite right? Too much lemon and it’ll make your teeth curl, as my dad used to say. Too much sugar and it’s undrinkable, too much water and all we have is a watery tasteless liquid.

I know I have made far too much lemonade on occasion by having to add just a bit more of this and that until, before I know it, I’ve made enough for three jugs instead of one.

The saying “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade” is incomplete, really, isn’t it? You can’t just make lemonade with lemons, you need the other ingredients in the right proportions or else that lemonade is not going to taste pleasant at all.

Just like in life, we need the right ratio of other ingredients in order to make lemonade from the lemons life hands us all at various times.

Just like with lemonade, sweetness needs to be added, so too in life when a crisis or ‘lemon’ hits our life. We need the sweet things like a surprise visit from a friend, picking flowers from our garden to bring inside, watching a favourite movie with a friend, taking that day trip to a town you’ve always wanted to see. We don’t need much sugar to sweeten the whole batch of lemonade.

We need that sweetness to balance the bitter taste of disappointment, loss and pain that life seems to hand out on an alarmingly regular basis. Without sweeteners, life is indeed just a bowl of lemons sitting on the bench. We need to intentionally add the sweetness.

And we can’t make lemonade without water, the mainstay of life and a necessity to our very existence. We need mainstays. Whether it be family and friends, faith, job satisfaction, life purpose. We all need the basics in life, just like our physical bodies need water.

So when life hands us lemons, we can indeed make lemonade but we also need the water and sugar and enough of each to make the living palatable.

Maybe you can provide some of the sugar and water to someone’s life when they are handed lemons. Or maybe you can allow others to do the same for you when your life takes a sour turn.

After all, what fun is drinking lemonade all by yourself?

Even though we are still rugged up in our winter woollies, the ticks are already starting to appear. We have already had our first cases for the year. Last year, we saw up to five to ten cases of paralysis per week. Although the Centenary suburbs are a haven for us to live in, sadly ticks feel the same way!

Is my pet at risk?All dogs and cats that have access to outside are

potentially at risk all year round. This is because ticks are spread by wildlife. However, pets living near the river or that walk through bushland are most likely to pick up ticks.

Signs of tick paralysisThe most obvious sign reported is that a dog or cat has

walking difficulties, especially wobbliness or weakness in the back legs. This can progress to front leg weakness and eventually to an inability to stand up.

Often pets will begin vomiting or retching or can have trouble eating and swallowing. Coughing is also common. Sometimes their bark or meow will sound unusual or high-pitched. Owners often report their pet being very quiet or having “glassy eyes”.

How is tick paralysis treated?Once a pet starts to show any signs of tick paralysis,

it should be taken immediately to your vet for treatment. Treatment involves an antiserum and other medication. The pet is also hospitalised until the signs of paralysis have diminished to the point it can safely be discharged. Depending on the severity of the paralysis, this may take from one to seven days or even longer.

How you can prevent ticksAn important part of preventing paralysis is to check

your pet for ticks thoroughly every day. This is not always possible or practical and several effective medications exist to help prevent ticks from poisoning your pets. There is a number of preventatives including top-spots, tick collars, rinses and sprays.

Tick paralysis is potentially life threatening, and can be expensive to treat. With this condition, an ounce of prevention is definitely worth a pound of cure.

An early start to the tick season

The Brisbane Jindalee Lions Club is looking for nominees for the annual Children of Courage Awards.

This is not a competition, and the categories are Special Needs Children, ie sight, hearing, speech impaired, wheelchair bound or long periods of hospitalization or medical treatments.

Other categories are a courageous act or deed and an inspiring sporting achievement by children who have overcome personal hardship/disadvantages to achieve a high degree of sporting prowess either as an individual or team member.

The children at Jamboree Community Kindergarten are getting ready to celebrate their 20th anniversary.

On Sunday 25th August Jamboree Community Kindergarten will become the ultimate destination for families as they open their doors to local families for a family fun day.

Jamboree Community Kindergarten Co-Director Sharon Pick said that the kindy has been providing a high quality kindergarten program in the centenary suburbs for the past 20 years and she is looking forward to welcoming past, present and future students, family and staff as the Kindy celebrates.

“A lot of local families would have attended the kindy over the past 20 years and we hope they will come down and visit us and see the changes that have taken place over the past 20 years,” Ms Pick said.

“We are inviting local members of the community to come down, buy their Sunday morning coffee and enjoy all the free fun entertainment we have on offer,” she said.

The Family Fun Day will feature an animal farm where children can hold and feed the animals, story tellers, musicians, face painting and lots of fun games and activities the whole family can enjoy.

“Along with the free family activities and entertainment we will also be burying our time capsule, have a photographic display of the kindy past and present and will be opening an art installation the children have created which we hope will be featured in our 50th Anniversary,” Ms Pick said.

The Jamboree Community Kindergarten 20 Anniversary celebration will take place at 61 Beanland Street Jamboree Heights from 9 am - noon, on Sunday 25 August.

Coaching For Life

One of the questions often asked of me these days is “How do we build a happy and secure family?” Tacked on the end (but rarely stated) is concern that modern technology and social networking are tearing apart families, and parents – or grandparents - are finding it almost impossible to sustain a connection to the family. In fact, some pundits are even suggesting that the traditional notion of “family” has already gone, along with the dinosaurs.

It’s an interesting question to consider, whether we still believe in family as the building block of society. Most of us will create a family at some stage in our lives – we’ll make a commitment to a partner, bring children into the world, and raise them to have some sense of connection to their historical forebears.

Websites such as Ancestry.com are becoming increasingly popular as people trace their family roots. Central to this search is peeling back the layers of stories that bring to life the journeys of our forebears, and tell us a bit about who they were and what their lives were like.

Sharing these stories with our kids provides many opportunities for consolidating family values, strengthening personal qualities we want them to develop, and giving them a sense of place and identity in their complex worlds.

When we give kids this sense of being part of something bigger than just themselves, they reap enormous emotional benefits including higher self-esteem, better social skills, and increased tolerance. In addition, it strengthens family cohesiveness.

Setting up time where you can construct and share narratives about your family is the way to build a happy and resilient family. For example, Robyn Fivush developed a measure called the “Do You Know?” scale that asked children to answer 20 questions about their families. Examples included: Do you know where your grandparents grew up? Do you know where your mum and dad went to high school? Do you know where your parents met? Do you know an illness or something really terrible that happened in your family? Do you know the story of your birth?

Research showed that the more children knew about their family’s history, the stronger their sense of control over their lives, the higher their self-esteem and the more successfully they believed their families functioned. The “Do You Know?” scale turned out to be the best single predictor of children’s emotional health and happiness.

Another powerful way to build family narratives is to share life experiences. Holidays, big family get-togethers, weekly family dinners, exchanging photos of events and creating family storybooks are ways of building family traditions and extending narratives. In particular, these should reflect not only the good events, but also the tough challenges faced by all families at times so kids learn how families bounce back after adversity.


Major changes are underway at Centenary Christian Kindergarten thanks to an enhancement and renovation grant provided through the Office of Early Childhood.

These grants are available to existing kindergartens to enhance and renovate their facilities and have enabled the kindergarten to purchase information technology for use in the classrooms, undertake significant maintenance work, replace and extend patio roofing to provide a much better all weather outdoor learning environment for children and enhance the existing playground with structural play equipment such as a maze, water pump and imaginative play areas. As well, structural improvements, including a retaining wall will give wheelchair access to the vegetable and herb gardens.

All these improvements will be on show at the centres open day and mini fete to be held on Saturday August 24 from 10am till 2pm.

This annual event is an affordable fun family outing and includes rides, a jumping castle, market place, sausage sizzle, kindy café and cake stall. There will be a monster cent sale with heaps of great prizes and plenty of free activities to keep the kids occupied including a petting zoo, reading nook, face painting, play dough and craft activities.

Centenary Christian Kindy upgrade and fete

In the Western Corridor, we are surrounded by quality State, Catholic and Independent schools, which have benefitted from the BER infrastructure investment in halls and other state of the arts facilities to help our children get the best possible education.

Our children get a decent education because of our dedicated teachers and school leaders, but as a nation, we can do better. That is why we have developed a Better Schools plan, for all schools and all students.

If Queensland signs up for the Better Schools plan, an unprecedented amount of funding will be injected into our local schools, meaning more one-on-one attention, more modern equipment for students and more training and support for our teachers at all our local schools.

For example, the Better Schools plan, will deliver around an extra $8.2 million for Centenary State High School over the next six years which is a 36.2% increase per student.

This plan means fairer funding for every school in the Country, with a goal to lift quality of teaching and learning in Australia so that by 2025 our schools are in the top five in the world.

To reach the new standard, the Government will invest two dollars for every extra dollar that State and Territory Governments put into schools, along with indexation that is higher than it would otherwise have been.

CENTENARY RSL Sub-Branch Monthly Update by

Just prior to ANZAC day and Remembrance Day each year, you will see members of your local RSL Sub Branch selling badges or poppies at the local shopping centres. We are often asked what happens with the money raised in theses sales. In broad terms, the RSL raises funds to support ADF personnel, veterans and their families. The funds are also used in many community support programs. Just some of the programs which require on-going support are listed below:

Mates for MatesThis project has provided Soldier Recovery Centres at both Enoggera and Townsville for

the physical and mental rehabilitation of ADF personnel wounded or injured as a result of service. The mates for mates program also supports families of ADF casualties. Within this project the RSL has purchased a yacht for personnel to de-stress as well as to compete in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht race, being trained by ex-Olympians. Sponsorship of the Kokoda trek by wounded or disabled personnel is also accomplished under the project.

Sponsorship of the Spinning BulletsA team competing in the National Wheel-Chair Basketball League.Yalari This program provides scholarships for indigenous children from regional and remote

communities to gain access to first class secondary school education in Australia’s leading boarding schools. This program aims to educate children for life in the modern community.

Scripture Union This is a long term program of adventure based learning and is designed to help young

people who are at risk of suicide, facing exclusion from school, come from broken homes or are locked in a cycle of addiction.

The Youth Development Program In conjunction with the Bond University, the RSL has provided $3,000,000 to 1,200

exceptional Queensland Students. Those students also have the opportunity to apply for an ANZAC scholarship which covers 50 percent of tuition fees for a single or combined degree at the Bond University.

The role of the RSL to provide support for existing and ex-ADF personnel and their families, as well as deserving segments of the wider community is an on-going effort. Therefore, on-going community support is a necessity.

Local children flocked to the Jindalee Homemaker Centre recently to cuddle and feed their furry and feathered friends. It was great to hear the laughter of the children and see smiles on all their faces.
