Cellular Respiration

Process of transferring energy in organic compounds to ATP

Equation = OPPOSITE OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS!!!

What was the equation for photosynthesis???

Page 2: Cellular Respiration

*Cellular respiration without oxygen (anaerobic) is less efficient than cellular

respiration with oxygen (aerobic)…

Anaerobic Respiration => 2 net ATPsAerobic Respiration => 36 net ATPs

Page 3: Cellular Respiration

Cellular Respiration is much like the “opposite” of photosynthesis.

Formula for Cellular Respiration

(energy for the cell touse for other processes)

What will the cell use the ATP for?

Name some specific process of the cell.

Page 5: Cellular Respiration

Takes place in and around the mitochondrion.

Page 6: Cellular Respiration

What is the organelle of cellular respiration????

Page 7: Cellular Respiration

• Some of the steps in cellular respiration take place on the inner membrane of the mitochondrion, which is folded.

• What purpose do these folds serve?

Page 8: Cellular Respiration

Aerobic and Anaerobic C.R. begin with glycolysis…

Page 9: Cellular Respiration

**In the cytoplasm

**Anaerobic = NO OXYGEN needed

**Glucose is broken down to release energy – makes 2ATP

**Products used in Kreb’s Cycle and ETC

Let’s take a look at how plants and other cells use the

glucose that is produced.

Energy is packaged in glucose during the process of photosynthesis. However, the glucose molecule is bound together. Do you think cells can use this glucose in its current form?

NoSo what has to happen to the glucose, if it is bound together, in order for cells to use it?

The bond has to be broken and a more useable form of energy should be produced.

Page 16: Cellular Respiration

The presence or absence of oxygendetermines whether fermentation

(anaerobic respiration)or aerobic respiration will occur next…

Page 17: Cellular Respiration

No oxygen…

• Glycolysis still occurs

• Pyruvic acid (broken down glucose) is changed through fermentation

Page 18: Cellular Respiration

In Fermentation:

• No extra ATP is made

Two kinds:1. Lactic Acid Fermentation – causes

muscle fatigue 2. Alcoholic Fermentation –

makes beer, bread and wine

Page 19: Cellular Respiration

Anaerobic Respiration

1ST step – ________________*Takes place in ____________*Breaks down ___________*Makes ____ ATP

2ND step – ____________________

2 Types:
