winning baritone Paulo Szot (South Pacific

with Kelli O’Hara) and featuring the Chicago

Symphony Orchestra. Baltimore Symphony

Orchestra artistic director Marin Alsop

conducts the production, filmed in July

2019 as part of the Ravinia Festival’s Leonard

Bernstein Centennial.

Despite having just one named char-

acter, the Celebrant (performed by Szot),

Mass has the dimensions of a Broadway

extravaganza, featuring 245 people

onstage. As the story unfolds, members

of the Street Chorus find themselves in

an existential quandary, wondering how

they can believe in a God and a world that

are seemingly blind to their plights.

Mass first aired on Great Performances

during its 1973-74 season, marking the

beginning of Bernstein’s storied associa-

tion with the series. Another fun fact: it

features lyrics by Tony-winning composer/

lyricist Stephen Schwartz (Jesus Christ

Superstar, Wicked).

Opera devotees won’t want to miss

Wozzeck (Sun 3rd, 12 p.m.) on Great Per-

formances at the Met. Peter Mattei stars

in artist William Kentridge’s interpretation

of Berg’s tragic opera set in an apocalyp-

tic pre-World War I environment. Met music

director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts.

Great Performances: LA Phil 100 and

Bernstein Mass will be available to stream

following each broadcast via the Great

Performances website (pbs.org/gperf), or

watch using the THIRTEEN Explore app

(thirteen.org/explore). Join the conversa-

THIRTEEN IS ALIVE with the sound of

music this month with Great Performances

specials spotlighting the Los Angeles

Philharmonic’s landmark birthday celebra-

tion, an exhilarating production of Leonard

Bernstein’s Mass, and more.

Hailed by The New York Times as “the

most important orchestra in America—

period,” the Los Angeles Philarmonic

celebrated its 100th birthday with a year-

long festival of globe-spanning concerts,

events, and new commissions. The Centen-

nial season concluded on October 24, 2019

with a once-in-a-lifetime gala featuring

three legendary LA Phil conductors—Zubin

Mehta, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and current

Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel.

Great Performances was there to

capture this historic event, LA Phil 100

(Fri 8th, 9 p.m.), filmed at the Walt Disney

Concert Hall in Los Angeles.

Highlights include Ravel’s “La Valse,”

led by Conductor Emeritus Zubin Mehta.

The eclectic program also includes

Witold Lutosławski’s “Symphony No.

4,” led by Conductor Laureate Esa-Pekka

Salonen. Gustavo Dudamel brings his

signature dramatic style to a suite from

Stravinsky’s “Firebird.”

The spectacular grand finale showcases

the three conductors simultaneously con-

ducting the world premiere of Icelandic

composer Daníel Bjarnason’s instrumental

piece From Space I Saw Earth.

Next, enjoy a front-row seat to Bernstein

Mass (Fri 15th, 9 p.m.), Ravinia Festival’s

acclaimed production of Leonard Bernstein’s

music theater masterpiece starring Tony-
