Technical Support NJSACC staff provides free, one-on-one technical assistance to programs looking for support in the areas of licensing, staff recruitment, budgeting, curriculum development, room design, nutrition, behavior and youth development. In 2011, staff provided 103 hours of training impacting over 54,000 youth. NJSACC Ambassadors A select group of leaders in New Jersey’s afterschool communities work with NJSACC to build countywide networks of afterschool organizations, advocates and partners. Located in each of the 21 counties, Afterschool Ambassadors develop public awareness of afterschool issues, build a strong network for afterschool program professionals, and establish professional development opportunities throughout the state. Over the last year, ambassadors mentored 564 professionals impacting over 33,400 children. Outreach A daily blog, Afterschool Flash, reaches more than 2000 professionals with valuable information on programming, staff development and financing—ideas that can have an immediate impact on programs. NJ Afterschool Action, a monthly newsletter, provides more than 1600 subscribers with updates on research, policy development and advocacy. At-Risk Afterschool Meal & Snack Program In partnership with the Afterschool Alliance, NJSACC has launched a campaign to increase participation in the At-Risk Afterschool Meal and Snack Program, a federal nutrition program which provides healthy meals and snacks to children and youth in afterschool programs. Professional Development NJSACC sponsors a multitude of programs for afterschool staff, exploring the benefits of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) for school-age youth. Almost 6000 children and youth in 204 programs throughout the state participate in Full STEM Ahead programs funded by the National Science Foundation. NSF-funded projects include: Garden State Girls STEM Collaborative Project Great Science for Girls Leap into Science National Partnerships for After School Science Other STEM programs include 21st Century Afterschool Science Project and Outdoors in the Garden State. NJSACC also provides comprehensive training to combat summer learning loss, emphasizing expanded learning opportunities for youth in summer and vacation programs. Additionally, NJSACC offers training workshops on a wide variety of topics throughout the year at locations across the state and can customize training for individual programs. Topics include child development, art, team building, character education and management skills. • Supporting Student Success With support from the National Governor’s Association, the Council of Chief State School Officers and the National Conference of State Legislatures, NJSACC is working on a unique nationally-recog- nized pilot program linking afterschool programs to the newly adopted Common Core State Standards. Through this proj- ect, NJSACC will identify how afterschool programs can best partner with schools to support student success. Approximately 1300 youth from 11 programs are involved in the pilot project. • Afterschool CARES Service learning is more than a buzz word for NJSACC.
