SACRED HEART ALAMOSA

Everyday Stewardship One of the characteristics of Everyday Stewardship is to be committed — to persevere daily in a way of life acknowledging that everything belongs to God. I know, I know. Easier said than done. Just ask Zebedee. It’s quite an image we get from the Gospel, after all. “So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him.” There was Zebedee, about his business, mending nets with his two sons, who were undoubtedly his best workers — they had to have been more dedicated than the hired men, who worked for wages rather than for fam-ily. And in an instant off they go, following this strange man. I don’t know about you, but if my kids left me on a hot summer day to finish the lawn by myself, I wouldn’t be too happy. But Zebedee must have been someone quite special. Perhaps he realized that his sons didn’t belong to him — not really. They belonged to God, and from the beginning of time, it had been appointed that they would be among the first disciples of Christ. He passed, he called, they followed, and Zebedee obliged. He simply went back to mending his nets, I imag-ine. Zebedee already understood what St. Teresa of Calcutta would say mil-lennia later: “Give until it hurts.” “You’re wasting my time.” “I’ve done so much for her; she owes me this.” How often do we think things, and even people and relationships, belong to us? The truth is none of them do. We must be ready, as Zebe-dee was, to surrender them to God when He comes walking past. — Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

A Prayer for Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things and I desire to receive you in my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacra-mentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

Reflections with Father Uju Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Last week we reflected on some aspects of the call to disciple-ship as being able to discern and respond appropriately, then staying with the master and learning from Him. Today we see

another aspect, which Jesus said is becoming a fisher of men (women), and from the first reading, being a messenger of re-pentance. For Jonah was called by God to bring the good news of God’s mercy to the people of Nineveh; that they may re-pent. He resisted as we all know because he has a parochial view of God’s mercy and wished the others ill in their atti-

tudes. That is not God’s way. Many people today are like Jo-nah preferring others to receive the pain of their choices, to bringing to them the message of Divine Mercy—and you only need to look at the political world to confirm this. This is bad and does not reflect what it means to be a true disciple of Je-sus. As students of Jesus, we are to replicate Him in the world; and from the Gospel we learned that His first message was a

call to repentance. The aim of this imitation is because God does not wish us dead and condemned, but alive and saved. Therefore, in the call of the disciples, He made them under-stand that aspect of their call, to be messengers called to popu-late the heaven with forgiven people. To us as well, having discerned our discipleship, listened and responded to Christ,

now is the time to take delight in being messengers of God’s divine mercy. This work is urgent according to our second reading—challenging us to resist being consumed by who they think they are and the things they do, since life in this world is for a time. In a way, it asks us not to be engrossed with the needs of now without recourse to eternity. To repent is our invitation and to preach repentance is our mission. Are you

lacking in any of these? The New Year is your choice-time to appreciate your call to discipleship and reappraise your role as God’s Jonah to the people in your family and neighborhood. How many of them will you bring back to church this year? Answer please! Moreover, as our nation enters a new political dispensation, let us pray for the Jonah-spirit to be in our lead-

ers to know that we are all important to God

Sharing the Gospel

There's a colorful envelope addressed to you on the kitchen table. You see it's from your friend. You open it and find a party

invitation inside. You parents say you can go! When Jesus invited Peter, Andrew, James and John to come along with him, they were just as excited to go. Jesus was the Savior and a good friend. They couldn't wait!

Mission for the Week Jesus wants you to come to his home in heaven. Make a party invitation from Jesus to you. Use this invitation as a bookmark in your Bible.

We would like to thank all of our parishioners and visitors for

being generous with your weekly donations. We depend on your generosity to meet the financial needs of our parish.

May God bless you for your continued support!
