Celebrating NAIDOC
In September, eight Indigenous students from Oberon High School travelled to Bathurst with Mr Luccarda (Principal) and Mr Bender (Aboriginal Support Teacher) to participate in the Bathurst AECG NAIDOC Week opening ceremony.
The students joined with many schools in the Bathurst network in marching up William Street to the BMEC where they were entertained by a number of Indigenous performers including aboriginal dancers, singers, guest speakers and other guests.
This year’s theme, ‘‘Our Languages Matter’, aims to emphasise and celebrate the unique and essential role that Indigenous languages play in cultural identity, linking people to their land and water and in the transmission of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, spirituality and rites, through story and song.
The students are now planning their own NAIDOC afternoon to be held early in term 4.

Term Three Twenty seven courses were offered in Term 3 for our 195 members. The old favourites - including Bridge, Ukulele, Singalong, exercise classes, craft classes, walking and cycling activities as well as Armchair Travel sessions continue to be popular while new activities were introduced as well. U3A now runs a bookclub for those who like to discuss reading and a group of interested members enjoyed learning about constructing stone walls. A visit to Brenda Lyons' garden inspired those who love beautiful flowers and Ivan Shandanski ran
Latin Dancing classes for those who like moving with the times! One of the many highlights of last term was the course called "Ask Dr Grace". Members enjoyed learning current first aid techniques from Dr Grace who was both entertaining and engaging. Dealing with snake bites, fractures, heart attacks, burns and drownings were just a few of the topics covered. Coming up next Term Term 4 promises to provide our members with even more variety and enjoyment. Paul Ferry has offered to share his extensive knowledge and experience in photography and will run a course for beginners. Members are guaranteed to come away enthused and eager to get the picture! For those who love gardens there will be a bus trip to the beautiful Japanese Gardens in Cowra. Time will also be available to visit the Prisoner of War Campsite, the Australian and Japanese War Cemetery, and the Visitor Information Centre with its wonderful display of roses. Dietmar Sajowitz has offered to share his love of bowling with those who are eager to learn, and Aqua aerobics returns with a longer season than in the past. Those who have been regular attenders in the past can vouch for this activity – Sharon Inwood runs an excellent class with lots of laughs. Members improve their fitness levels with this regular weekly session in Oberon’s heated pool. Armchair Travellers will be treated to Dr Grace Maano’s humour and engaging style of presentation as she shares her experiences during Rotary Missions to various African countries, and Graeme and Lyndal Precians will return with another slice of India – this time the tropical south. Invitation to Morning Tea U3A members, family and friends are invited to the end of year morning tea on December 9th, 10am at the Community Centre. For any reader who has elevated to his/her 50's and is interested in learning more about U3A, please go to our website which has the current program in detail, the latest newsletter and a membership application form. - http://oberon.u3anet.org.au Alternatively, you may like to ring 63358226 or email [email protected]

ROADSIDE VEGETATION MANAGEMENT PLAN.
Council recently received a $47,580 grant from Local Government NSW under the Council Roadside Reserves Environmental Grants Program to map and manage vegetation in Council’s roadside reserves.
This project will develop a Roadside Vegetation Management Plan (RVMP) which will be embedded into Council’s Integrated Planning and Reporting Framework. Training will be provided to council staff to improve their skills in assessing, documenting and planning the management of roadside reserves especially during capital works projects on Council Roads.
Oberon and Wagga Wagga Council have been selected by Local Government NSW to trial the new Rapid Assessment Methodology (RAM) to map roadside vegetation including weeds and to assess the conservation value of roadside reserves across the Oberon LGA.
The map below is of prioritised roads which are centred around the World Heritage National Parks in the east of the LGA and the Mitchell Landscapes of over cleared land around O’Connell in the north west of the LGA. Consultants CTEnvironmental will commence field assessments of the prioritised roads on 26 October 2017. Prioritised roadside reserves are indicated in pink.
A desktop database review of existing vegetation types across the 1100km of Council managed roads has identified the key areas and vegetation communities that will be assessed
using the RAM.
A key outcome of the project is to integrate weed management into roadside reserve management which will lead to a reduction in the impact of weeds on roadside reserves. The preservation of critical habitat for endangered species including the Koala is also a major objective of this project.

hearted varied program. Although fully booked already, the return of
John Martin (Piano) and Susan Blake (Cello) to “Music on Mount David”, is something special, so a “waiting list” has just been started. In case

get on the waiting list!
Deputy Surveyor George W Evans was the first known European to Cross the Great Dividing Range with a party of five, three free men and two convicts on November 30th 1813 at a location now on the Hampton Road. They travelled on through what are now Rockley, Tarana, and O'Connell to Bathurst surveying for the Cox's Road. A new commemorative sign will be dedicated on Saturday November 25th 10.30am at the Antonio Reserve on the Hampton Road, followed by morning tea. The sign to acknowledge this landmark in the history of our region is funded by the Lithgow Branch of the National Trust, Lithgow City Council and Bill Hoolihan of Rydal. It is possible there are descendants of Evans and his party living in our area and we would especially like to hear from them.

New Kids on the Block
Oberon High School’s Agriculture Farm welcomed new goat kids in early October. The cute little critters join the growing menagerie of animals that are nurtured and studied by the students as part of their Agriculture and Primary Industries courses.
Oberon High School Supports World Peace Day
Oberon High School’s Hospitality and Food Technology students have a well-deserved reputation for preparing and serving fine food and this reputation is well known in the community. This year they were again asked to assist at Oberon’s World Peace Day celebrations. Sancia Moran (Year 10), Baily Nielsen (Year 10), Mathew Westall (Year 12) and Bailey Armstrong (Year 11) prepared and served delicious refreshments for morning tea for around 20 guests.
Butterfly Effect
Female students from Oberon High School who are in Years 7-10 participated in an all-day event called “The Butterfly Effect” late in Term 3. Throughout the day, Nikki Davis from Enlighten Education led around 40 girls through a number of workshops and discussions that helped them gain a better understanding of many subjects
including friendships, personal safety, feminism and their own potential.
The girls also learnt skills and strategies to help them manage stress effectively and learnt how to seek balance in their lives. They participated in lots of fun activities throughout the day which were designed to assist them to learn about stereotyping and how to deal with negative and contradictory messages that young women receive every day.
HSC exams
During October around 40 Oberon High School students from Years 11 and 12 sat for their HSC exams. Under the school’s compressed curriculum, year 11 students study HSC subjects and are able to complete these subjects a year earlier. For the Year 12 students, who were farewelled at a special assembly at the school on the last day of Term 3, these exams are the culmination of 13 years of study at school – quite an achievement!
