Rubie’s Costume CompanySpecial thanks to spouses, significant others, family, and friends whose love and support helped make this production possible.

Coronado Playhouse’s 2014 season is off to a great start. We are excited to bring you the Summer of Love Series, starting with this young audience’s production of Sleeping Beauty. Next, our Annual Free Classic Series presentation of Romeo and Juliet, set in modern day with original Shakespearean language, is a new and different take on Shakespeare (members can reserve up to six seats free of charge, at CoronadoPlayhouse.com). Our following play is the campy comedy Dearly Beloved, an hilarious and sweet romp that puts the ‘fun’ in dysfunction. We end 2014 with Spamalot. This musical will have you laughing your coconuts off as you gallop along with this larger-than-life production! We have undertaken a very challenging and costly year to bring you lively shows we hope you find boundlessly entertaining. Our board serves as artistic director for the Playhouse and we work diligently to select a season we hope will thrill you. We now need to ask for your help. We need your support to continue to bring you quality shows and programs. Now through July 31, we are running a membership campaign. Our goal is to raise funds and grow our membership base.

For our Over the Rainbow Membership Campaign, if you join at a family level or higher, you receive all normal benefits, plus you get two free tickets to Journey through Oz: a Musical Cabaret, August 1-2, 2014. In honor of the Wizard of Oz’s 75th anniversary we are planning this very special two day event with some of San Diego’s best talent singing numbers from The Wizard of Oz, The Wiz, Wicked and more! Please join our family at whatever level you can.Chicago was one of our biggest undertakings to date and Chrissy’s team did a phenomenal job. Sherlock Holmes was also a crowd-pleaser and did very well. If you experienced either of these shows, or any production from last season that delighted you, I hope you are moved to become a member. We count on our membership to bring life to our productions, education and community outreach, as well as the opportunity for local playwrights and entertainers to realize their dreams. We can’t do it without your help. Please consider joining today.Thank you for your support and loyalty to Coronado Playhouse. All the best, Katy Skyrud Managing Theatre Director

We are the Community’s TheatreCoronado Playhouse is committed to giving back to the local community, beyond offering quality entertainment, by using its public platform to help those in need. During Sleeping Beauty or the Famous Rose Taboo, we are proud to partner with the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego. The House was specifically designed to provide a home away from home for families with hospitalized children – including 47 bedrooms, hot meals and a children’s play area for siblings – so families can focus their attention on supporting their sick or injured child instead of worrying about day-to-day needs. Every year, more than 1,500 families are helped and the need for overnight services far exceeds its 47-room capacity. For more information on programs please visit www.rmhcsd.org.

Please consider making a cash or check donation to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego during the run of this show.

Sleeping Beauty, the beloved fairy tale story of a young woman who goes into a comatose state after getting a splinter in her finger and then being revived by a handsome prince, has its basic elements in both Nordic mythology and 16th century French literature. In the early 1800s, the German folklorists, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, modified the fairy tale in their story of Dornroschen (Little Briar Rose). Their story has a true “fairy tale ending” when the prince awakens Rose with true loves kiss. Shortly afterwards, they marry and “live happily ever after.” It is this version that Disney adapted his popular 1959 American animated musical fantasy film Sleeping Beauty. Sleeping Beauty or The Famous Rose Taboo, a musical version of the classic romantic fairly tale, was originally presented Off-Broadway in 1965 at the Astor Place Playhouse. It played an astonishingly long run for a young audiences musical, transporting a new generation to the miraculous kingdom of dreams-come-true. Many, many,

many moons ago while in my late teens I was introduced to Sleeping Beauty or The Famous Rose Taboo when I was cast as Prince Charming in a production at The Road Company of Audubon, NJ. In 2010 I had the great pleasure of directing Coronado Playhouse’s production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella. It was such a joy seeing the excitement in the eyes of the children and watching them respond with laughter, awe and applause that when the Playhouse was looking for a young audiences show for this season I jumped at the chance to present Sleeping Beauty or The Famous Rose Taboo. I felt that it would be a perfect fit for Coronado Playhouse. It has the charm, innocence, wit and pure entertainment that I believe audiences of all ages enjoy. Our production’s creative team, cast, designers, crew and volunteers are outstanding and they all need to be recognized. I truly thank all of them for their professionalism, expertise and hard work. So, whether you have seen it before or this is the first time, may the musical magic of Sleeping Beauty “awaken” fond memories or create a few new ones.Thank you, Thomas Fitzpatrick, Director

Thomas Fitzpatrick as Prince Charming in a 1980 Road Company production.
