5sh Denomination

In 1927, an engraved no hyphen version of the 5sh “Ox Cart” was issued (Scott 31, SG 38). I happen to not have a copy, but illustrated is the 1933 photogravure hy-phenated 5sh green & black. One way to check for engraved vs. photogravure ver-sions (besides the generally rougher pres-entation of the photogravure, and the fact that the photogravure Afrikaans stamps are hyphenated), is that the area of the stamp between the country script and the upper border shows no short nearly verti-cal lines in the photogravure stamp.

There were actually two types (Dies) of the photogravure 1933-1954 5sh issued, with three major Scott numbers…

1933 Scott 64 (SG 64) 5sh green & black, Type I.

1949 Scott 65 (SG 122) 5sh blue-green & black, Type I

1954 Scott 66 (SG 122a) 5sh deep yellow green & black, Type II

Here is an example of the 1949 Scott 65 5sh in blue-green & black with Type I or Die I. (My copy is very blue to me. SG calls the color “pale blue green”. I don’t see much green, though!)

THE PRESIDENT ’S MESSAGE :

DEADLINE AND SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The eclipse came and went and we are still here. No earthquake or end of the world. It has been a very busy summer. With Fall com-ing our way it is time to get the albums out and work on the old stamp collections. Plan now to attend our Fall Stampfest on Sep-tember 16th. We will be having elections in November. Please let the officers know if you are interested in running for an office in our club.

I was watching the news of Hurricane Harvey in Texas. We have a daughter and her husband living there. They are OK at this time. I can’t help to think of all the prop-erty that is destroyed and all the stamp collections that were in the flood. Remember all the folks in harm’s way and help the agencies that are working down there if you can.

I want to thank all the members who participated in the last club auction. We made more than $600 selling some of Larry’s Spuur’s donated collection.

The eclipse was neat to see! I thought it’d get darker, though! On a vacation, I saw remains of American Pre-Indian ancient peoples with astronomical evi-dence rivaling Stonehenge! I’m sure they were as fascinated as I was! The stamp show AND elections are coming up! This is a busy time for the Club. Please consider running for an of-

fice! We need a Vice-President, Treasurer & Member-at-Large. (Otherwise, the first three people leaving a meeting to visit the restroom will be unani-mously elected in abstentia! LOL) We’re coming to the end of Jim Jackson’s excellent survey of the 1926-54 South African series. I’ve only received two other submissions, so I need articles! Stay safe on Labor Day weekend!

The ECHOES is published six times a year in January, March, May, July, Sep-tember, and November. If you do NOT get your ECHOES the first week of the issue month, let me know! I will get another mailed out to you! Remember, email delivery = COLOR!!

PAGE 3 ECHOES

Paul Renner sells as “PNC” on eBay and has been known to sell at Piccadilly. He is now a full-time dealer!

Clarin Lewis has a booth in The Mercantile Vintage Mall at 145 Pioneer Parkway East, Springfield. He is also now a dealer.

Mike Luttio is a “Retired” dealer who sells at buy, sell, trade nights (and local shows). He has inex-pensive World Wide if you have a want list.

Mike Weyers is a part-time dealer. He can be con-tacted at: [email protected] or by phone at: 541-501-8894 or 541-688-2403.

Bill Witcraft of Dothan, Alabama sells on eBay as “Sergeantmajorbill.”

Space is available at no charge for club members who wish to let others know they are available to sell philatelic items!

A Survey of the 1926-1954 English-Afrikaans …… (continued from page 1)

Note the projection (bump) on the right lower portion of the “U”? And the sharp triangular point the “A” comes to on the left upper portion of that letter? This is Type or Die I. In the 1954 Die II, these projections are smoothed out. Also not the fully screened nature of the 1949 Scott 65 (SG 122) with “nervous dots” on the border and everywhere?:-)

10sh Denomination

Lastly, the only example I have of the 10sh is the photogravure 1939 Scott 67 olive black & blue “Groot Constantia”. No problems with identification, as the design was only issued once, although SG recognizes two shades (1939, 1944). There was an earlier 1927 10sh with a pictorial of “Cape Town and Table Mountain”, but it likewise was only issued once.

Out of the Blue

This concludes our excursion through the English-Afrikaans Se-Tenants of 1926-1954. What A Long Strange Trip It’s Been!!

I understand better for myself the signs for identifying the myriad is-sues...and I hope you do also!

Comments Appreciated!

If you’re a club member and a “vest pocket” dealer, let me know, and we’ll get you listed

here on this page!...Ed.

AM I READY TO PREPARE AN EXHIBIT? Submitted by: Frank Vignola

Some questions/statements which will help YOU decide. Some of the questions may seem “out-of-place”, but please answer truthfully. Only YOU can make the final decision!

1. I like to read, especially detective, historical books and articles.

2. I have visited an art gallery within the last 12 months and wonder what PIGMENTS the artist used to make the colors in the older (pre 1850) paintings.

3. I have been to at least one major stamp exhibition in the last year (TexPex, OkPex, EXPO, etc.)

4. I like to tinker with mechanical things.

5. In earlier stamp production, I know what a ‘dandy roll’ and ‘doctor blade’ were.

6. I like crossword puzzles and try to complete them by any means necessary!

7. I have a computer and printer (or access to them), and KNOW HOW TO USE THEM!

8. I enjoy writing and have written stories, poems or technical articles, whether published or not.

9. Most of my stamp collections are FINE USED examples.

10. I have at least one ‘stampless’ cover.

11. The TOTAL number of stamps in my collection is >500.

12. I subscribe to at least ONE stamp publication.

13. I know what LINE-ENGRAVED, LITHOGRAPHY, and PHOTOGRAVURE (printing methods) mean, AND can show anyone some examples of each.

14. I prefer mounting my stamps using hinges onto non-printed blank of ‘quadrilled’ pages with plain margins.

15. I know when the 5¢ 1st class postage rate took placed (within one year).

16. I like challenges and have a competitive nature in most things.

17. I have a ‘tete-beche’ stamp in my collection and KNOW which language this term is from.

18. I know what the term ‘Prussian Blue’ means.

19. I am familiar with the abbreviations: UPU, TPO, CTO, PP, PD, and RPO.

20. I know what a ‘pre-cancelled’ stamp is and have one in my collection.

21. BONUS question: I know why more imperforate HORIZONTAL pairs exist than VERTICAL pairs.

If you ‘scored’ 15 (or more) ‘yes’, then you are seriously READY to start your first exhibit.

If you got the answer to #21, then you are REALLY ready! MANY ‘old-timers’ don’t know this!
