Conclusion

Wednesday Night Supper and Study Join us each Wednesday at 5:30 for supper, and study at 6:00. Beginning January 11,

2012, we will continue our comparative study of the Synoptic Gospels.

Year of the Bible Two months down, and we have read Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, AND part of

Numbers; AND Matthew’s Gospel; AND part of the Book of Acts; AND selected

Psalms along the way. It takes my breath away… and some days crosses my

eyes! But it is exciting to have made it this far, and while we still have along way

to go in our year of reading the Bible together, the effort is surely

worthwhile. Keep reading, and should you fall behind, just read a little extra each

day until you catch up.

I feel good that our Winter Friends are with us again. I’m

sure that much has passed by me in the past weeks. I

have no idea when I’ll be in full swing again. Reba is my

prime concern—she’s a good patient. Her left leg is still

inoperable and swollen. I pray the rehab starts working.

My hearty thanks to Pete for taking over for me - I’m going to miss the Men’s luncheon, the food

primarily. Thanks, Pete.

I was proud to learn that Men’s Group donated $500 toward postage to ship “Troop Support”

parcels oversea.

Jeremy, I commend you on your graduation from college; a tremendous

accomplishment and we are all proud of you!

Keep the “Nautical Flea Market” in mind—a great way to bring in the “coins” used for the needy.

Come, attend our monthly meeting held the first Tuesday each month at 12:00 thru

1:00. Excellent food, fellowship and commitment to the needs of others.

Merry Christmas and a challenging NEW YEAR!

Noah's Ark Everything I need to know, I learned from Noah's Ark.

ONE: Don't miss the boat.

TWO: Remember that we are all in the same boat!

THREE: Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark.

FOUR: Stay fit. When you're 60 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big.

FIVE: Don't listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done.

SIX: Build your future on high ground.

SEVEN: For safety's sake, travel in pairs.

EIGHT: Speed isn't always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs.

NINE: When you're stressed, float awhile.

TEN: Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals.

ELEVEN: No matter the storm, when you are with God, there's always a rainbow waiting.

Ministering to women…

Date: Saturday, February 11th

Retreat: 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Location: Allegro House,

29 Mazatlan, Rockport

Pastor Karen Horan, last year’s speaker, has agreed to return again this year to share her gifts. For those unable to attend last year’s Retreat, Pastor Horan is an enthusiastic speaker with a passion for sharing our Christian faith and God's love. She is the founding pastor of Gruene UMC, has been married to Bill for almost 26 years mother of two college students, Tyler 23 and Ashley 21. Pastor taught high school English and Dance for 10 years before her call to ministry. She attended Perkins School of Theology at SMU and says, “Gruene UMC is just over 5 years old and God has done amazing things here!"

Come one, come all and bring a friend! Watch for the sign-up sheet to be posted on the bulletin board in the Narthex. We’ll share Brunch and fellowship, morning and afternoon Gatherings, Lunch, Crafts, and Closing.

Questions? Contact Parkie Luce.

Women, opportunities for growth and service and a time to have fellowship with other women in the church continue in the month of January. Please mark your calendars for the following experiences.

NOTICE: We have moved our Tuesday meetings for this month only. February will resume the regular schedule.

1. Tuesday, January 10 at noon, is Circle Meeting. This year we are studying Confessing the Beatitudes by Margaret Aymer with Pati Vincent leading us in the study. Come join us as we learn more about the Beatitudes together. We will be reading Lesson 5. Also, bring a sack lunch for bodily sustenance as your mind and heart get a tune-up! 2. Tuesday, January 17 at 10 a.m., PW will meet at Ingrid Little’s home for brunch and the January

meeting. All women are invited to this meeting. The quilting group who usually meets on this Tuesday [who made 120 pillowcases that were mailed off to the Children Homes of our Presbytery. Yeah ! Ladies, good job. Those children will have a nice Christmas surprise!!!] will meet in February to do another set of projects! So watch the February newsletter.

3. On Mondays (8am-3pm) and Thursdays (8am-11am) every week, our women are at Castaways. It is a busy, but fun time to get to know other women and men. We also have someone to pick up furniture items too heavy to move by yourself. Come, we need your help especially on Mondays even if it is for only an hour, and we need your ‘goods to sell’ especially large items like furniture. Since the men no longer do the December Sale, your furniture and larger items can go to Castaways. Please help us keep a good thing going in this community! 4. Still looking for officers for next year. Remember God has given us all talents to share. Is it time you shared yours? Prayerfully ponder the idea of serving your church by becoming one of the officers needed in our Presbyterian Women’s Group. It is January, and we need to fill these positions: Castaways Co-Chair and Historian. ANYBODY LISTENING?!?!?!? If you have been looking for a new way to spend some of your time, maybe one of these offices is it. Please contact Barb Goodlock 729-2196 if one of these positions just fits you! 5. If you sponsored a beautiful Christmas poinsettia for our Christmas season and haven’t paid $14.99 for it,

please make checks to Presbyterian Women. You may drop it in the offering on any Sunday morning. 6. Women’s Retreat will be on February 11 with Pastor Karen Horan returning to bring us the message. Parkie Luce is already making plans for a fun-filled, learning experience. Please mark your calendars for this event and watch for the sign-up sheet beginning in January.

7. Mo Ranch Women’s Conference is March 23-25. Mark your calendars!!! Registrations are due before January 15, so be sure to watch for the registration forms/deadline and get yours in on time!

FROM THE FELLOWSHIP COMMITTEE

'A TIME TO REMEMBER & A TIME TO SAY THANKS" - January is a time for

remembering, and after the 11 o'clock service on January 8th, the Fellowship

Committee will host a POT LUCK lunch and have some old scrapbooks and photos of

the old Presbyterian Church and some of the original families. We will also SAY

THANKS AND HONOR OUR CHURCH OFFICERS, those coming in and those who

have already served and those who are serving now. Please bring a dish for a pot

luck lunch -- something from an old family recipe would be nice, and if you like you

can label your special "old recipe" dish. Don't forget to say a special "THANK YOU"

to our Church Officers.

HOLY HUMOR

A father was approached by his small son who told him proudly, “I know what the Bible means!”

His father smiled and replied, “What do you mean, you ‘know’ what the Bible means?”

The son replied, “I do know!”

“Okay, “ said his father, “what does the Bible mean?”

“That’s easy, Daddy… “ the young boy replied excitedly, “It stands for ‘Basic Information

Before Leaving Earth.’”

Ministering to the community through use of our facilities...

THE COMMUNITY TABLE By Pete Chamberlain

The Christmas meal on December 20th was a joyous community celebration with Santa, assisted by Adelaide Marlott,

handing out toys to approximately 65 children. (Thanks to John and Adelaide for quietly shopping, preparing, and

purchasing the very nice children’s gifts. Golly, was that supposed to be a secret? Oh well…)

The food was excellent and the atmosphere could only be described as joyful bedlam. All seven

churches worked smoothly together like good Christians--it still amazes me. We served 391

diners; 109 more than last year. The numbers aren’t final yet but it appears we served at least

25% more people this past year. Thanks again to HEB supermarkets who, for the second year

in a row, donated $500 in gift cards for the purchase of turkeys and hams for our Thanksgiving

and Christmas meals. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make 2011 so successful!

The 2012 serving schedule has been finalized with the exception of 6 open Tuesdays because of the fact that we have

7 churches to serve the 8 (occasionally 9) Tuesdays every 2 months. 3 of our regular churches have volunteered to be

responsible for 3 of the open dates . Unfortunately that did not happen in time for the first open date (Jan 17 th) SO--

- we will have to pickup this first open date ourselves. We had planned to pick up one extra anyway.

The January schedule for food preparation & serving is as follows:

Jan. 03 The First Presbyterian

Jan. 10 Holy Cross Lutheran

Jan. 17 Good ol’ First Pres again—setting the example

Jan. 24 The First Baptist

Jan. 31 First United Methodist

It will be a difficult month and we can still use more volunteers for serving, doing dishes and, particularly for clean-up

(after 6:00 pm). Thanks to those who have already stepped forward. If you would like to volunteer for serving in any

capacity for the Community Table, call Pete Chamberlain at 463-9086.

Happy New Year!

Odyssey is gearing up to welcome our children back on January 4th. We have lots of wonderful activities in store for our kids this year.

At Live Oak, we will be welcoming a new teacher, Ms. Nina Davila. We are very excited to have her on board. Children at Live Oak will be learning to play kickball in their Get Moving class, and will also be starting a new enrichment activity called Outdoor Adventures, which will be based on ProjectWild curriculum.

Students who attend FPC will be welcoming a new teacher to their site as well. Ms. Sarah Harmon has been teaching at Live Oak during the past semester, but will now be joining the older kids. FPC kids will “Get Moving” by playing basketball. World Traveler is a new enrichment activity that will introduce children to different cultures around the world.

As always, if you would like to volunteer with Odyssey, we’d love to have you! E-mail [email protected] or call 463-5635 for more information.

January 10 is Houseplant Appreciation Day. Give them a little extra attention this month!

Ministering to others… in the Community

CASTAWAY’S … in January By Sandy Booth

THANK YOU TO … … all who volunteered their time for the Christmas sale at the church. We had a

lot of fun, and made more than we would have if we put all that neat stuff at Castaways.

… Charlie who rounded up the clean-up crew, and

… the clean-up crew.

We will be open at Castaways for business January 2.

We will clean/pull on January 28.

THE GOOD SAMARITAN CENTER

By VeeAnn Wright

The Good Samaritan Christmas basket project once again involved many, many volunteers working for 10 days unloading and sorting donations to be reloaded in

the baskets. Distribution of 600+ Christmas baskets proceeded as planned on December 21st. More details

on numbers and specifics of how donations and contributions were used will be available for next months news.

While Christmas has passed for another year, in beginning a new year of serving our

community, Good Samaritan's CONTINUALLY needs and appreciates our support via donations of non-perishable foodstuffs and monetary contributions. A 'menu' showing the most common

food items needed and used in the pantry is on the table outside the sanctuary. The food donations can be put in the basket below the table. Envelopes for use with monetary contributions are available on the table also.

Thanks for helping to continue our famous Presbyterian 'spirit of giving' by generously donating

to efforts to restock the Good Samaritan food pantry and keep it stocked throughout the new year.

26 October 2011 Mrs. Reed & the Coastal Bend Troop Support, As you know, I am now on my fourth deployment. The locations have certainly changed, but the support that I have received from your program, not only for myself but the many soldiers serving beside me, has not wavered one bit. I wish I could put into words how much your program has meant to all of us serving in foreign lands, but it is impossible for me to articulate what you mean to us.

I wanted to write and tell you that you all will never be forgotten by me or anyone who has looked so forward to seeing that 11 7/8”x 3 3/8”x 13 5/8” priority mail box arrive and be placed into our hands every single month they are away (especially on the holidays when it’s a very difficult time to be away from family).

I know you all do it for the troops and for nothing else, and that means so much to us. I’m sure you know that not everyone will be able to say thank you, but still know that what you do for them means the world.

God Bless you all so very much. I know the lord is smiling down on you and is very proud of what you are accomplishing. You all are very selfless, caring, patriotic, loving Christians.

Dear Church Family,

The family of JoAnn Lister wishes to thank our

church family for all you did to make JoAnn’s

Memorial Service such a wonderful success.

Love in Christ,

Four members of our church family received college diplomas on Saturday, December 17, 2011. Sarah Gaskamp (Jon & Janet Gaskamp’s daughter) and Missie Myers (Rick & Pam Roe’s daughter) received their Master’s Degrees and Jeremy Schuler (Charlie & Connie Schuler’s son) and Casey McNeely (Scott & Kelly McNeely’s son) received their Bachelor Degrees. People know how much Presbyterians value education, so we can be very proud of these students. Their accomplishments are the result of tenacity, patience, and determination.

HOLY HUMOR

A minister parked his car in a no-parking zone in a large city because he was short of time and couldn’t find

a space with a meter. Then he put a note under the windshield wiper that read: “I have circled the block

10 times. If I don’t park here, I’ll miss my appointment. Forgive us our trespasses.” When he returned,

he found a citation from a police officer along with this note, “I’ve circled this block for 10 years. If I

don’t give you a ticket, I’ll lose my job. Lead us not into temptation.” Author and source are unknown
