YOGA AnD PIlAteS PRIvAte InStRuCtIOn
The Cross Creek Fitness Center is now offering Yoga and Pilates private and small group instruction.
Yoga focuses on physical postures, called “asanas,” together with breathing exercises and meditation techniques to increase flexibility, strength, balance and promote stress reduction and body awareness. Classes can be designed to be more active, purely for relaxation or somewhere in between.
Pilates is a systematic whole body conditioning routine with emphasis on core stability, correct posture, spinal alignment and breath. Pilates increases strength, flexibility and total body awareness.
Private and small groups can be tailored to specific needs using one or both disciplines, whether for general health and fitness or for a specific need or condition.
To learn more about Yoga and Pilates instruction, contact April Zieschang at [email protected] or 281-344-0078.

shafer Elementary Shafers’s Keep Encouraging Youth toward Success (KEYS) mentor program offers a different view of volunteering. Mentors are adults who make a commitment to a child on the brink of success, spending 30 minutes per week with them during the school day for the duration of the school year. It isn’t tutoring: it’s talking. If you are interested in becoming a mentor at Shafer Elementary, please contact Alicia Leung at [email protected].
Huggins Elementary Huggins Elementary school has a new principal. The Lamar CISD Board of Trustees approved Doug Waddill as the principal at Huggins for the 2012/2013 school year. He has a bachelor’s degree in Music from Harding University and his master’s degree in Administrative and Supervision from the University of Houston. He has seven years of teaching experience in Fort Bend ISD and Lamar CISD, one year of administrative experience in the private sector and three years of administrative experience in Brenham ISD. Most recently, Waddill has served as the assistant principal at Velasquez Elementary, beginning with the 2010-2011 school year. Let’s welcome Mr. Waddill to Huggins.
Cross Creek Ranch will open a sparkling new pool in the summer of 2013, as the fast-growing west Houston master-planned community expands its already impressive aquatics amenities. Located south of the intersection of Fry Road and Flewellen Oaks, Cross Creek Ranch’s second pool will be open to all residents with ample surrounding shade structures and lounge seating to create an ideal family retreat. The 75-foot long pool also will host swim meets and be available for lap swimming.
The new pool at Cross Creek Ranch will join the community’s signature Water Park at Adventure Island where families enjoy a 200-foot water slide, Splash-n-Spray Park, wading pool and tanning shelves with water jets to create one of west Houston’s most complete water experiences.
Two Proposed Elementary schoolsDuring their December Board meeting, the Katy ISD Board of Trustees approved a recommendation by Superintendent Alton Frailey to retain the services of SBWV Architects for the design of proposed Elementary Schools No. 36 and No. 37. Funding for the design and construction of the two new elementary schools is available through 2010 Bond project savings.
“The project savings are a direct result of the intense bidding competition in 2011,” said Katy ISD Chief Operations Officer Tom Gunnell. “We are fortunate to have been able to build all of our new schools below projected costs, lending us the opportunity to use savings for additional schools without cutting anything out of our original bond plan.”
The recommendation for both campuses comes as a result of the growing population in the district’s southwestern quadrant and the need for at least two new elementary schools as early as 2014. One school is proposed for the Pine Mill Ranch development and the other within the Cross Creek Ranch development. The new schools will be refined repeats of the three new elementary schools opened in August 2012. Construction proposal recommendations will be presented to the Board at a later date.

Red-winged BlackBiRd
One of the most abundant birds across North America, and one of the most boldly colored,
the Red-winged Blackbird is a familiar sight atop cattails, along soggy roadsides, and on
telephone wires. Glossy-black males have scarlet-and-yellow shoulder patches they can puff
up or hide depending on how confident they feel. Females are a subdued,
streaky brown, almost like a large, dark sparrow.
Look for Red-winged Blackbirds in fresh and saltwater marshes, along watercourses, water hazards on golf
courses, and wet roadsides, as well as drier meadows and old fields. In winter, you can find them at crop
fields, feedlots, and pastures.
