General Objectives
Main objective: – Develop models and methods for assessing and monitoring carbon stocks in
Tanzania as contributions to implementation of REDD at local as well as national levels.
– The project aims to cover all major forest vegetation types (miombo woodland, montane forests, lowland forests and plantation forests).
Sub objectives: – Develop biomass and stem volume equations
– Develop growth models for estimating biomass changes over time
– Identify efficient field inventory designs

Sub-objectives – To develop volume equations for miombo woodland tree species.
– To model and estimate forest biomass using ALS-derived metrics in miombo woodland
– (To determine cost-efficiency of ALS as auxiliary data for above ground biomass estimation in miombo woodland)
– To assess the effect of plot size and elevation gradient on biomass derived from ALS in the tropical rainforest

– Determine variability of volume and biomass along elevational gradients
– Determine efficiency of different plot sizes in monitoring carbon

Sub-objectives – Assess and map cover change in the Itigi thicket vegetation from 1990 to
2012
– Assess biomass and carbon stock in Itigi thicket vegetation
– Compare biomass stock of wood species between protected and unprotected thicket vegetation
– Determine human disturbance and location of villages and the main road from the thicket vegetation
