General Objectives

Main objective: – Develop models and methods for assessing and monitoring carbon stocks in

Tanzania as contributions to implementation of REDD at local as well as national levels.

– The project aims to cover all major forest vegetation types (miombo woodland, montane forests, lowland forests and plantation forests).

Sub objectives: – Develop biomass and stem volume equations

– Develop growth models for estimating biomass changes over time

– Identify efficient field inventory designs

Main obective – Assessing miombo forest resources - models and methods as basis for

implementation of REDD in Tanzania

Sub-objectives – Develop diameter-height equations for different vegetation types (paper

submitted 2012)

– Develop biomass equations for miombo woodland (submit 2012)

– Quantify biomass changes over time by means of growth models for miombo woodland

– Quantify biomass variation as basis for efficient inventory designs for miombo woodland

Ernest Mayua, UMB - 2011-2014 Main objective

– Modelling and estimating forest biomass using field inventory and airborne laser scanning in Tanzania

Sub-objectives – To develop volume equations for miombo woodland tree species.

– To model and estimate forest biomass using ALS-derived metrics in miombo woodland

– (To determine cost-efficiency of ALS as auxiliary data for above ground biomass estimation in miombo woodland)

– To assess the effect of plot size and elevation gradient on biomass derived from ALS in the tropical rainforest

Will finish data collection in November
