I extend a congratulations to all award recipients and deep gratitude to invited guests and representatives of our school partners, including local primary school Principals, Universities, Community Organisations and Leadership and of course our patrons; past “Cavroadians” who cherish their connection to their old school. 2018 DUX – Lachlan Madge gave a wonderful speech of thanks and inspiration to our students and we wish Lachlan every success in his post-school life. Thank you also to Ms Van Genderen and Mrs Di Vaira again this year who did an exceptional job organising the awards evening complimented by many parents for its warmth, production and great sense of community on the night. Our School Review. Parents will be aware that earlier this year our school was reviewed by a team from EQ’s School Improvement Unit. The team consisted of 2 current Principal Peer Reviewers, an Internal Reviewer from the SIU and a reviewer external from EQ. The team wrote a report containing findings, affirmations and recommendations that may assist the school in the next 4 years of continuous improvement. The report can be found on our school website. There are 9 domains of the review. The review seeks to “look for” visible evidence from across the 9 domains, of “hard” data of school performance, and “soft” data of personal experiences that corroborates the school’s journey and “story” through interviews with over 90 interviewees comprised of students, staff, parents, community, business and other school partners. The review affirmed Cav is an exceptional school where our practices and performance are sharpening and affirming of the deeper qualities of our school as the reasons why parents seek Cav as their school of choice for their child. The report is a starting point for and considered in the strategic and operational planning for our school over the next four years until the next scheduled review in 2023. I have maintained that our future success is not solely reliant on past performance and reputation, egos and any sense of elitism. The measure of our school being a great school is the value add to the lives of the young people enrolled at Cav. This is on-going, reflective and targeted work. Strategic Planning. Principals identify key messages from the School Review report and follow up consultations with school community stakeholders. The purpose of a Strategic Plan, like any large organization or enterprise is to define aspirations, the “bigger priorities”, identify our key resources, consolidate our progress and identify essential returns on investment into the foreseeable future. I intend to publish a document much like a company prospectus and it will have a corporate – and aspirational “look” befitting our school. There are particular priorities for our school in the “bigger picture” as directed by the Principal, depending on past performance, school context and needs, parent, community and system aspiration. The work ahead in one school may be very different in depth, breadth and emphasis from another. Cavendish Road is high performing, has a deep and successful culture for learning and opportunity, our students well engaged; has cohesion across the school and broader community and enjoys very high levels of satisfaction and regard as a result. But we can do even better and there are some things we need to address.

The plan also identifies the means by which we improve schooloperational and professional matters to achieve them, andwhich direction, strategies and expected performanceindicators of progress and achievement to be identified. AnnualPlans that action the initiatives, and how they will be monitoredand evaluated are created for each of the four years and arealso published on the school website each year.

Transparency and collaboration are key to any plans beingsuccessfully implemented. This year I want to hear fromstudents in “where to next” in our school and in the next weeksrepresentative sampling and critical thinking analysis from Year8 and exiting Year 12 students will take place. It is my intentionthat the same Year 8 students take part in four years’ time whenthey are in Year 12.

The draft Strategic Plan will be on the school website. Parentsare invited to join us for evening coffee at P&C 19th ofNovember, where the draft Strategic Plan will be presentedand inclusions considered in the Strategic Plan 2020-2023. Ourschool review report is already on the school website. Bookingsthrough SOBS for catering purposes for the P&C on the 19thwill open on Tuesday, 5th of November.

Uniform Policy changes for 2020 will make their way intoschool handbooks and student diaries for 2020. P&C haveworked with me the last 18 months to implement incrementalchanges to school uniform to ensure that not only do studentsproject the unity and high standards of student presentationas long held traditions, but also to ensure student comfort andaffordability to parents. Louise McLeish, our P&C Vice Presidentcontinues to do a fantastic job to ensure students are well‘kitted out” and value for money to parents.

Guiding and binding legislation. I insist that school policiesare well founded and defensible and within the bounds of allcurrent legislative authority and this includes to all reasonablemeasures of inclusion and non-discrimination. This ensuresconsistency and certainty and disposes of any need ofnegotiation and clear procedures of school management ofissues arising.

New Human Rights legislation takes effect from 1st of January2020 where a prohibition on discriminating, amongst otherthings, due to a declaration of religious belief or practice.

Much discussion has occurred with legal advice that the effectof this impending legislation is that students are still not towear necklaces of any description, applies to every student. However, subject to health & safety and general presentationcompliance, should a student have a genuine wish to wear anecklace that includes a religious symbol as declaration of theirfaith, belief or practice the student must obtain an exemptionfrom the Principal. In my experience at Cav, I have had only twosuch instances with which to deal and is not a daily or frequentoccurrence.

Clearly, a genuine and supported application must be lodgedbefore an exemption is granted. A form will be available on theForms & Documents tab on the school website.

The end of the school year is an exciting time for students. Butwith the summer vacation less than two months away, studentsmay need a little “end of school year motivation”. Helping makethe school year wrap up in a productive and positive way willhelp keep your child motivated, engaged, and ready to learnright through to the end of the year.

The end of year can be very busy with not only school eventsbut also end of year activities in all of those external clubsand schools students participate in. With Year 12 students onlyhaving three more weeks, Years 10 & 11 five weeks and thejunior school seven weeks, it is highly beneficial to help makesure your child stays motivated until the last day of the year. Now is not the time to take it easy!

There is still time to improve school results. There’s time tostudy harder. There’s time to put more detail into assignmentwork. There’s time to prepare for exams. And most importantly, there’s still time to make a difference on the end of year results.

Here’s how to stay motivated (and even improve results) in thetime left:

Make the rest of this year count. The clock may be ticking onthe school year, but there is still time to achieve your goals andmake this end of year report one you are very proud of!

Student Free Day Activities

Monday 21st October was the final time the Student Free Daywill be in Term 4. As part of the OP system, this day hasbeen used for teachers around the state to meet on subjectpanels and verify the Year 12 work prior to the final piece ofassessment completed in school in Term 4.

1. Use those study planners: The study planners helpstudents say organised throughout the school yearand now’s not the time to leave them at the bottomof a school bag.

2. Be specific about your goals: Set a goal and worktowards it. Whether it is by fine-tuning study skills orworking harder in a particular subject, having a goalto work towards makes staying motivated easy.

3. Make improvement your mantra: To achieveimproved results you have to do the work. To do thework, you have to be motivated, which is challengingat this time of year. Create daily reminders of whatthe goal is in your planners and work towards themdaily.

4. See your teachers for help: Always let your teachersknow when you don’t understand what you arelearning. Your teachers want you to be successfuland will help you with your learning.

At Cav Rd, we have many teachers who have participatedas members of these panels over the years, which is ademonstration of their quality knowledge and skills. As thestudents in year 11 move in to year 12 and the new ATARsystem progresses, we are equally well placed as a school witha number of teachers participating in the new endorsement andconfirmation roles across the state. The change of system alsosees the move of the student free day to the Friday of Week 8 inTerm 3 next year. In 2020, this means Friday 4th of Septemberwill be a student free day.

For those teachers not involved in panel commitments, acomprehensive Professional Development Program wasoffered at school. This day included guest presenter, Jo Langeworking with over 50 staff on Positive and ProductiveClassrooms. Jo is a behaviour specialist whose programexamines the important of recognising the motivations ofstudent behaviour. She leads teachers through a range ofpractical and supportive strategies to create positive andproductive classrooms. Jo also conducted a specialisedsession for our Beginning Teachers who worked collaborativelywith other Beginning Teachers in the region.

We also harnessed the expertise of staff in our school and guestpresenters to deliver a range of up to the minute workshopsfocussing on a variety of ICT skills. A range of 12 sessionswere offered over the day including the use of new Microsoftfunctionality in schools, IT monitoring software for classroomsand online learning to name a few. Many senior staff alsocompleted online courses delivered by the QCAA aboutAcademic Integrity in the New QCE System. Overall, it was avery busy and productive day with a focus on improvement tosupport quality outcomes.

Attendance

As the end of the year approaches, it is important to remindall Cav Rd families of the importance of regular and consistentattendance to the very last day of term. The school has alwaysfocussed on teaching right up to the last day of term and it isimportant that students be here. I continue to be impressed bythe commitment of parents and carers to informing the schoolof their student’s absences. If you receive a letter in the mail inrelation to unexplained absence, please sign the letter and askyour student to return it as a matter of urgency. Alternatively, you can contact the school directly with explanation ofabsences on [email protected].

2019 Rugby World Cup Japan

Spirits in Japan were lifted by the greatperformance of the national team, the BraveBlossoms, in the Rugby World Cup, hostedby Japan. As many areas in Japan struggledwith damage caused by Typhoon Hagibis, the Japanese team went on to defeatScotland and progress to its first everquarterfinal appearance. Unfortunately, things didn’t go so wellagainst South Africa. The same can be said for Australia in theirmatch against England. The Brave Blossoms even came inahead of the Wallabies in the world rankings. The excitementsurrounding the Rugby World Cup has been infectious and theJapanese are looking forward to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics withgreat enthusiasm. Japan will be front and centre on the worldsporting stage for a long time to come.

forward to welcoming their host sisters, Bethany C and LuciaB, to Omiya Koryo in December. The two Year 11 girls willstay with the families of Mai and Runa for a month during thesummer holidays as part of our reciprocal long-term exchangeprogram.

Here are their impressions of their time at Cavendish Road.

Runa- I really enjoyed spending time with my host family doingthings such as cooking, watching movies, going shopping andplaying games. I could make friends. I could experience manythings I cannot do in Japan. It was so much fun that I don’twant to go back to Japan. I am planning to study in Australiawhen I become a university student. Thank you very much.

Mai- I experienced many things in Australia. For example, I ateAustralian food for the first time. The other is that I can talk toa lot of friends and learn English. But I don’t know any Englishworlds, so I think that I have to study English hard when I goback to Japan.

Yuya- I really enjoyed staying in Australia. I went to variousplaces. For example, I went to the Gold Coast and the city. Itwas so fun. In school, I made a lot of friends. I was so happy.

In the subject, Food, Textiles and Design, the students arelearning how to design, produce and evaluate a savoury parcel. In this task, the students must incorporate ingredients from twodifferent cultures, while keeping the parcel healthy, challengingto make, and able to be made within the 70-minute lesson. The savoury parcel also must be visually appealing, tasty, andaromatic. The textures of the parcel should be appropriate forthe type of parcel as well. The students must consider thesocial, ethical and sustainability factors while making the parcel. Some of the ideas the students came up with included: CheesyBacon Vegetable parcel, Vegemite scrolls with Italian herbs,Beef and Vegetable parcel with Indian spices and Taco pies.Everyone has worked hard to achieve the criteria for this task.Well done Cavendish Road SHS students. I never knew I would come to Australia to finish my secondaryeducation. Before coming Australia to me was just land in themiddle of the ocean where kangaroos hopped in red desertsand koalas in eucalyptus trees, but there was much morethan that. The decision to come was very spontaneous andI never knew I would have such a great time in Australia. Itwas very hard to leave South Africa and I often reminisce;however, I grew to love Australia over time. Choosing to cometo Cavendish Road State High School was one of the bestdecisions I made; it consists of friendly students, inspirationalteachers and programs that allow you to excel in what you arepassionate in. The morning of my first day at Cav I was a littlenervous that students might exclude me because of my race ormake fun of my accent, but none of that happened. Coming toCav allowed me to be myself. It is a community that takes inin all people and embraces diversity. I never felt like I neededto pretend to be someone else in my time at Cav. Cav is morethan a community, but a family that supports you to be yourbest self.

Charlie’s film won him first place for the documentarycategory.

All of the films across the various categories were shown first –5 hours’ worth of student films - and then the awards ceremonybegan. Charlie said that the award ceremony was very goodbut very scary because he knew the competition was so high;however, he had an amazing experience overall.

Charlie’s documentary can be viewed online for free:

Optiminds

Optiminds State Finals

On the 12th and 13th of October, Lisa Williams and I joined ateam of five very enthusiastic Year 11 students (Jess M, KiaraT, Jamie J, Haley T and Zeke C) at the Optiminds state finalsat UQ. On the Saturday, the students took part in an IdeasMarket where they presented an initiative that they wanted toimplement in order to create a better future. The Cav Roadteam presented the #sharethecare initiative which was socialmedia campaign aimed at promoting awareness for the globalrefugee crisis. Their long term vision for this was to createa not-for-profit organisation and app that would help peoplearound the world to donate resources to this cause.

On the Sunday, each team at finals received a new challenge, similar to the one that they had received at the Optimindsregionals except that this time instead of having six weeks toprepare a response, they had only three hours. The end resultfor the Cav Road team was excellent and they received a lotof positive feedback from both the judges and the other teamsin their category. Overall, the entire team represented the CavRoad community exceptionally and certainly did the school andthemselves very proud.

Summer Olympics Games 2020

Fifty-six years after having organised theOlympic Games, the Japanese capital will behosting a Summer edition for the secondtime, from 24 July to 9 August 2020. TheGames in 1964 radically transformed thecountry. According to the organisers of theevent in 2020, the Games of the XXXIIOlympiad of the modern era will be “the most innovative everorganised, and will rest on three fundamental principles totransform the world: striving for your personal best (achievingyour personal best); accepting one another (unity in diversity);and passing on a legacy for the future (connecting totomorrow)”.

Aligning with the reforms advocated by Olympic Agenda 2020,the Tokyo Games will use as many existing competition venuesas possible, namely those built for the Games in 1964, such asthe prestigious Nippon Budokkan for judo, the Baji Koen Parkfor equestrian events, and the Yoyogi National Gymnasium forhandball. The Tokyo National Stadium, where the Opening andClosing Ceremonies and athletics competitions will be staged, will be completely revamped and replaced by a new arena.

Japan has been an Olympic land since the Summer Gamesof 1964, which were the first to be staged in Asia. In 2020,the country will host its fourth Games, if we include the WinterGames of 1972 in Sapporo and 1998 in Nagano.

“The important thing in the Olympic Games is notthe winning but the taking part. The important thing

in life is not the triumph but the struggle.”

Pierre De Coubertin - Founder of the Olympic Games1898

Queensland All Schools

Cavendish Road SHS once again had a very successful QLDAll Schools tournament. We were one of only three schoolsto have all of our teams qualify for this year’s Finals Series.Throughout the round games, all of our teams continued toimprove and build on the momentum produced through ourAcademy classes during the school year. Our 15 Girls, 15Boys and Open Mixed teams were undefeated through theirpool games and produced a very good standard of Touch.Unfortunately most of our luck ran out early on Finals Daywith the 13 Boys and 15 Girls teams meeting the eventualchampions in the Round of 16 in Coombabah SHS and KeebraPark SHS respectively; and our 13 Girls also bowed out in theRound of 16 as well.

Our 15 Boys had high hopes of going deep into the tournamentbut with the unfortunate rain event happening throughoutSaturday, our Quarter Final opponents (and eventual RunnersUp) played to the conditions better than we were able tomanage and we were defeated in a drop off to a very goodWavell SHS team.

However, our 18s Mixed team was expected to be our mostsuccessful team in this tournament and they performed to theirpotential, finishing as Runners Up after losing the Grand Final ina drop off to Emmaus College, Rockhampton. Congratulationsto Renae N who won best female player in the final for theMixed Opens, a well-deserved accolade.

All of our students were excellent role models for our schooland great ambassadors for our Academy. Throughout thetournament they displayed key values such as honesty, integrity, discipline, sportsmanship and fair play.

We would like to thank all the parents that attended theweekend to support all our players and teams. A specialmention to Mr Darren Beebe, Mr Michael Batchelor, Mr StrakKasonovic, Ms Kathy Gallagher and Mr Michael Lynch forcoming out over the weekend and supporting the GreenMachine. Another bigger thanks goes to Mr Ash Cross, MrChris Loth and Nathaniel Wong who trained, coached andencouraged every player every minute of every game. Wecannot thank you enough!

National All Schools

The National Schools Cup event was once again a successfor our Cav Rd Touch Academy. While we were unable tobe as successful on the field as we always hoped we couldbe, the amount of improvement, team work, friendship andcamaraderie amongst the players is always pleasing to see andshows that they're heading in the right direction as studentathletes.

Finishing Positions

Our 7/8 Girls team had 7 games and came away with 3 wins, 3losses and a draw; and they finished in 5th position, narrowlymissing out on a finals position.

Our 9/10 Girls division was split across two pools and our teamhad 6 games and ended up with 2 wins and 4 losses. Theyended in 9th position and based on the results of the play-offmatches, could have been higher had we been placed in theother pool.

Our 9/10 Boys continued to improve as the carnival went onbut only finished with 3 wins from their 7 games, with 4 lossesincluding a drop-off in their semi-final. They finished in 4thposition overall.

Well done to all who competed and thanks to all the familieswho made the effort to get our kids to and from the event. Also,a big thank you to our awesome coaches Nathaniel Wong, MrCross and Mr Loth for doing such a magnificent job! Your helpand support made this week run smoothly without any hiccups!!

USA Opportunity Tour

Starting on the 15th of September, sixteen Cavendish Roadstudents went to the USA. This program, the USA Opportunitytour, was a trip devoted to exploring opportunities beyond ourimmediate horizons. Guiding us on this tour were two teachers,Miss Signorini and Mr Caruso, and a Student Horizonsrepresentative, Jasmine.

We first visited New York City where we were able to immerseourselves into the busy life of a New Yorker. Our daily schedulesconsisted predominantly of “tourist venues” such as CentralPark, Mid-Town (guided tour), the Statue of Liberty, the EmpireState Building, the 9/11 memorial and Wall Street (guided tour). We were also extremely fortunate to view a Broadwayproduction of Aladdin, and an NFL game between the NewYork Jets and the Cleveland Browns. A more personalisedexperience was our guided tour of New York University andColumbia University where we were able to learn aboutpotential options for our future education. We also receiveda business presentation informing us about life changingopportunities in relation to overseas travel.

Our next stop was the Nation’s capital, Washington D.C. Onour way we stopped at Princeton University for another guidedtour. Upon arrival in D.C, we had an entrepreneurshippresentation on the George Washington University campus. The next day we explored the National Mall and theSmithsonian museums. A number of political marches tookplace making it a big day to be in the Nation’s capital. Ourfinal stop was San Francisco. A city full of life but only a limitedtime to explore. In the short amount of time we had remaining,we were able to enjoy some of the city’s most renownedattractions. On the “touristy” side, we explored Pier 39(Fisherman’s Wharf), Alcatraz prison, Sausalito, walked theGolden Gate Bridge, and spent our final savings at the SanFrancisco Premium Outlet Mall. On the more informative side,we visited the Apple Park Visitor Centre, the Intel Museum, andof course Stanford University.

Visiting Occupational Therapists

Dear Cavendish Road Community,

Eleven weeks ago, three student occupational therapists,Hannah, Payton and Rachel from Griffith University began theirnon-traditional placement at Cavendish Road State HighSchool where they worked among the Wellbeing Team for twodays a week.

“We were excited to understand how occupational therapistscould work within a school environment to provide supportfrom an occupational perspective. We entered our placementwanting to understand what the school was doing successfullyto support the students as well as finding areas that may benefitfrom alterations to improve school experiences. We decided toconduct a school-wide survey aimed at teachers and studentsto help identify the challenges being faced and the positivesthey experience at home and within school. After collecting thedata it was evident that many students were struggling to findthe balance between school and home life, stress managementand completing school work. We conducted a focus groupconsisting of 12 students from all year levels to further uncoverthe school experience from a student’s perspective. From this,we concluded that stress was a common struggle faced byCavendish Road students despite both age and gender, withteachers also struggling. Using our occupational therapy skillsand perspective, we are currently in the process of creatinginterventions that will be implemented in the school to furtherassist teachers and students in understanding and managingtheir stress. Our time at the school is coming to an end, but weare very thankful for the pleasant experience here at Cavendishand we hope you all have a positive end to the year andovercome the stress!”

Kind regards

Kokoda Youth Foundation Program

Jared H – Year 11

Year 11 student Jared H took his Kokoda Challenge one stepfurther by taking part in a Kokoda Youth Foundation Programin PNG over the spring vacation. Jared was a member of a30 strong group of young people who lived rough and bravedthe elements and trekked the infamous Kokoda Track over 12days.

Jared also learned of the various stages of the battle andwithdrawal that has a personal connection to a great unclewho experienced the war-time track that many veterans kept tothemselves for most of their lives such was the impact on them.

As well as the physical and mental toughness required tocomplete, the trek is in honour of Australian diggers who wereforced back in retreat from a Japanese war-time advancethrough the jungles of New Guinea. This is a true trek with nohome comforts where these young people had some insightinto the hardship. The retreat through torturous conditions ismilitary folk lore in Australia, made remarkable by survivingand being pursued by a well-equipped foe, and the tenacitywhere mates helped mates under such duress. Kokoda wassignificant to the war-time psyche of Australians who for in 1942matters looked very grim.

His membership of the Cav. Road Kokoda Challenge Teamadded further inspiration and Jared spent 6 months inpreparation for this experience. The trek can be a life-changingexperience for some and Jared has come away not only inawe but motivated to continue his personal service to Landcarewith National Parks & Wildlife, surfing events with Gold CoastDisabled Surfers Association, ANZAC Day Ceremonies, assisting at Foundation events.
