Cav Rd does a fantastic job of ensuring students receive notjust an excellent academic education but also a goodfoundation around social and emotional learning. The PastoralCare program is developed by the wellbeing team and supportsstudents in developing resilience, setting goals, safe onlinebehaviour, and respectful relationships, and creates anawareness of wellbeing. This week staff participated in twohours of mandatory professional development and our Deanspresented information from the Positive Schools Conferencethey attended earlier this year. We heard about the incredibleEddie Woo and the importance of wellbeing to supportacademic engagement. We learnt about Richard Gerver andthe role people in schools play to help nurture self-confidence,self-worth, creativity, innovative thinking, teamwork andcommunication skills. The team from Cav Rd that attended theconference are now planning to review and refine our PastoralCare program even further to ensure we are providing studentswith the best possible well rounded education.

Term 3 Focus – Year 11 and 12 students

I would like to take the opportunity to welcome back our seniorstudents for Term 3. This term is an extremely busy termparticularly for our Year 12 students.

The Semester 1 results have now been finalised and we havecommenced program changes for those students who havenot achieved success in some of their subjects in Semester1. Year 12 students now have to be mindful that they areachieving a minimum of a passing grade in all subjects thissemester to be eligible to receive their QCE (QueenslandCertificate of Education) at the completion of Year 12.

I will be speaking to the students who are at risk of notachieving success and have sent letters home to parentsseeking their support to make the required program changes.

All Year 12 students will be receiving their OP estimate thisterm. They are about to commence their QTAC applicationsand will need to be aware of their current estimate.

Year 11 students are strongly recommended to make subjectchanges as suggested by their class teachers. Students whohave received a D result for unit 1 have an unsatisfactory resultrecorded for QCE. Students who have been unsuccessful inmore than 1 subject are now at risk of not achieving their QCEif they do not move out of that particular subject/s. Teachershave contacted the parents of these students and students willnow make the relevant changes in consultation with the HODSenior School.

Year 12 QCS Test

On Tuesday 3rd September and Wednesday 4th September, our Year 12 OP eligible and Tertiary Selection Rank studentswill sit their 2019 QCS Test.

All Year 12 students will be required to attend school on bothtest days. Students who are not sitting the QCS Test will beinvolved in an alternative program of instruction. More detailsregarding the test and alternative program arrangements will beemailed home to parents closer to the test dates.

Students wishing to complete a TAFE course in 2020 canstart the application process now. If your student intends tocomplete a TAFE course, they need to take the first step inthe application process by talking to the VET Coordinator, MrsStubican, and Head of Department Senior Schooling, Ms KarynTrapp, in K16. As TAFE will start taking school supported

Studying with TAFE usually means a day out of school toattend classes. Therefore, attendance history is an importantconsideration for the school. It is also only open to studentswho will be completing Year 11 and 12 in 2020 and havechosen a non-ATAR pathway. Year 10 students will need todiscuss their intention to study at TAFE during their SET-Pinterview. Students will still be required to select 6 subjectsin case a TAFE course does not run or other circumstanceseventuate.

This was an outstanding production that every high schoolstudent should see. Peer pressure, self image, school stresses, work commitments and bullying are all covered in this partverbatim, part narrative piece, which then allows importantconversations to open up in the classroom. U18S and U15s MET EAST

Last month BMTA hosted the combined 15’s and 18’s TouchFootball State Championships. Overall Cav Rd Touch Academyhad twelve players across both the boys and girls divisions. Thegirls were represented by Bella A, Renae N, Tyler B, ShajuateA and Billie M, while the boys were Jude S, Khoen P, Heath C,Jay B, Haydon W, Luke S and Rafe P. The 18 boy’s team madethe Grand Final but went down by one try to Capricornia. Whileboth the 18 girl’s and 15 boys’ and girls’ teams were narrowlydefeated in the semi-finals. It was a pleasure to watch our Cavkids compete and congratulations to Renae N and Jude S whowere named in the Queensland State Team. Special mention toBillie M and Rafe P who were named shadows. All the best inyour preparation and good luck at Nationals.

Brisbane All Schools

On Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 of June, three Cav Rd teams, a13 and 15 year girls’ team and an Open mixed participated inthe Brisbane All Schools. The girls competition was very toughwith quality teams from in and around Brisbane. The fifteengirls had to work hard to be at the top of their pool by lunchtime to cross over for the finals rounds. They played well in thequarters and were successful in making the semi- final. I wasvery impressed and proud of the girls. They kept All Hallowswho won this division at the Brisbane and at Qld All Schoolslast year to a two all score line for most of the game. Ourstrategy was to shut down the open side to stop their very fastsweepers to the try line. This worked for much of the gameuntil we started to roll on their subsets, when we let in a try.Unfortunately we could get one back and All Hallows went onto win this division. The 13 girls won the grand final 4 tries to0. They played excellent footy right until the hooter in the lastgame. The semi was our toughest opposition. We play thesegirls, All Hallows every Thursday night but we really focusedon our mid field defence so they could not make ground tosub or get to our try line. The score was 1 all for a very longtime until we put one over to win. It was very exciting and Iwas very proud of their tenacity and determination. The workethic of these young ladies is outstanding and well above theiractual age of 12 years. A big thanks to all the families that cameto support and the students that attended to help referee. Aspecial mention to Mr Ashley Cross. The draw wasn’t kind withback to back games. Mr Cross would warm the girls up andhave them ready for the game so I could just focus on the gameat hand. Thanks Ash, you are amazing and we appreciate yourcontribution to our program.

The Open Mixed team were successful and also won theircompetition. Mr Loth said all the senior boys and girls thatplayed were focused and driven to be the best they could. Welldone!

Kokoda Challenge 2019The training begins early for the students that nominate toparticipate in one of the most gruelling long distance enduranceevents on the calendar. Early training sessions had studentssweltering in 35-degree heat and battling through seasonalafternoon tropical thunderstorms. Many months later and withthree tough long distance training walks under their belts, theCav Rd students were ready to compete in the 2019 KokodaChallenge. The physical, mental and emotional demands thatthe Kokoda Challenge place upon individuals and teams is whatmakes the event so difficult and challenging. The character

building and life experiences that take place within a supportiveenvironment are invaluable.

This year, Cavendish Road had 21 teams compete in theKokoda Challenge. Eight teams competed in the either the30km or 48km Challenge at the Brisbane event held atD’Aguilar National Park and the remaining thirteen teamscompeted in the Gold Coast 48km and 96km events held at theGold Coast hinterland. Two of those teams led by Mr Reynoldsand Mr Baker participated in the demanding 96km challenge, which sees competitors climb 5000 vertical metres over the96km. Of our school’s 80 participants that started the event, 77completed the challenge they had set themselves, whilst threestudents pushed themselves to their limit until injury or illnessforced them to retire from the race.

The school’s participation would not be possible without thededication of our leaders, teachers and parents. As always, forany successful event, there is a huge effort that takes placebehind the scenes, from the efforts of the school’sadministrative staff through to the team support crews whokeep everything going while the teams are out on the track. We appreciate these contributions and thank you all for yourcommitment to our students. We very much appreciate theongoing support of the school P&C to help with the funding ofthe shirts and hats.

As always, the students and teachers from the mighty “CavRd” were outstanding ambassadors for the school and werean admirable example of the values of the challenge - courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice.

Creative GenerationCreative Generation – state schools onstage (CGEN) is anannual arena spectacular that showcases the talent that ourfuture generation has to offer. Since its inception in 2005,CGEN has only grown in its splendour, size and the eclectictalents students from all over Queensland have to offer theworld.

Over the past seven months nine of the talented studentsat Cav Rd have been rehearsing for CGEN to bring theperformance together. They spent most of week one at theBrisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, and the effort andenthusiasm that they portrayed throughout the process isinspiring and commendable.

They have graciously given up much of their own free time andsome school hours to rehearse for the performance. CGENrehearsals provide an opportunity for students to display theirtalents and extend their networks with professional artists, andit is a fantastic stepping stone into the world of the performingarts.

The students who were involved in the televised arenaspectacular include, Hugo S (Year 11), Juliet B, Olivia N, KashtiP, Zoe R (Year 10), Shabari P, Nira P (Year 8), Benjamin F andJessica H (Year 7). Not only did these students showcase someof the burgeoning talent Cav Rd has to offer, but they showedwhat it truly means to be a student of Cav Rd and should beimmensely proud of their mammoth efforts.
