Dear parents and friends,
The Year P/2 children are enjoying their second (and final) session of
gymnastics this afternoon. We are very appreciative of the support the school
receives from the government’s Sporting Schools funding to allow this program
to take place, and the high quality coaching we have received from the staff at
the Hamilton Gymnastics Club. Next Friday afternoon’s lesson is the final
session for this round of gymnastics classes.
Thank you to the families who have taken the time and effort to complete the
Parent Opinion survey, As of the middle of this week there had been six
responses. Please note, the survey remains open until this Sunday so for those
who have yet to complete the survey, see if you are able to spare a few minutes
over the weekend. The more responses we receive, the more useful the data is
for our future planning and direction.
Our school concert rehearsals are now in full swing. There is a lot of work to do
until ‘show time’ on Wednesday, 18th September but the children have shown
themselves to be very eager to show off their acting talents. Attached to this
week’s newsletter is a list of the costumes required for the children (please
note, this is not the full list of roles, just the special costumes required for some
parts). This is an opportunity for all families to support each other and to see
what items can be shared around. See any of the teachers if you need more
information about the details of costumes for the concert.
This week is Science Week. And Miss P has combined her love of science with
the recent space studies to present a very enjoyable series of rocket lessons.
The children created a series of paper rockets designed to fit the special
launcher. The heights of these rockets was then measured by tracking the angle
of flight and calculating the altitude. The best heights reached were over forty
meters! It’s great to see the high quality and interesting work provided in our
science lessons at Cavendish.
Next week is Book Week. We have received a box of some of this year’s short-
listed books, which will form the focus of class reading next week. Our special
day is Thursday, when the children are invited to come to school dressed as a
character from a book. The Cavendish Kindergarten will join us first thing on
Thursday morning to share in the excitement of dressing-up. We shall also have

the senior students complete book readings to the whole school each
morning as part of our assemblies.
Next Thursday is our next MARC (Mobile Area Resource Centre) van
visit. There are quite a few overdue books on the list at the moment.
Now would be a great time to check the cupboards (and under the
bed) to see if there are any MARC books at home which need to be
returned.
Thank you Karl for coming to the school’s aid and removing a fallen
limb. He, and his chainsaw, made short work of the job and helped
make the playground safer for the children.
The Parents’ Club have organised a movie night event for Friday 6th
September. These evenings are
always good fun and now would
be a great time to ring up your
neighbours and friends and in-
vite them along to the movies. A
poster with details of the film,
price, ticket information and
starting time is included in this
week’s newsletter.
Thank you to the parents who
helped organise the printing of
the Year 6 shirts. They are very
proud to be wearing their spe-
cial tops and they look fabu-
lous!
The Lions Club will be loading
another paper truck this Sunday
18th August. Any school fami-
lies that can help from 9:30am
onwards would be very much
appreciated by the Lions Club. Please support the Lions as they sup-
port the school and so many other important community projects.
Next Wednesday 21st August is the date for our next
school council meeting.
A small portable music device was found on the school’s perimeter
this week. I have it in the office if you believe it may be yours.
Have a great weekend.

SPACE –A SENSES POEM
By Holly Q
I feel… I feel lost in the black ocean that
runs on forever. I am thankful
there is a rope holding me back
from the empty space of
secrets.
I see…I see large balls
floating in front of me
and tiny little specks
of light glow in the
darkness.
Cavendish Primary School– A Rural Tradition of Excellence 13
I hear… I hear the silence of space
as I stare into the black
painted canvas wondering
what secrets I might
uncover.
I taste… I taste the life giving
oxygen pump through
my helmet as we shoot
through space.
I smell… I smell fear trigger
through astronauts as
they leave the space
shuttle and into the
darkness.

I see….
I see gigantic asteroids flying past me at tremendous speed.
I smell….
I smell the delicious food in the rocket that is flying me through the darkness.

I feel…
I feel lost in the pitch black as I float through zero gravity in the infinite galaxy.
I hear….
I hear the ringing of the bolt as I was holding on to my rope for my life so I didn’t float in to the blackness.
I taste…
I taste the dust as I land on the surface of Mars to discover scientific evidence to help find life on this mysterious planet.

I SEE…
I see the gargantuan rocket standing like a white soldier on the launch pad ready for blast off.
I TOUCH…
I touch the buttons that are glowing as bright as fire engine lights.

I SMELL…
I smell the smell of the oxygen I have been breathing for the last two hours.
I TASTE…
•I taste the Space Food that is the disgusting devilled sausages with veggies.
I HEAR…
I hear the beeping sounds of the gauges and warning buttons that nearly make you deaf.

Jump Rope for Heart kicks off this term!
Jump Rope for Heart is a fantastic physical activity and fundraising
program that has been run by the Heart Foundation for 35 years. It’s a
great way for your child to keep fit and learn new skills, but it also
helps raise funds for vital heart research and education programs.
Since Jump Rope for Heart started in 1983, schools like ours have raised more than $75 million for the Heart Foundation’s lifesaving work. It’s important you register your child online, so they can receive the full benefits of the program and participate in online fundraising, simply follow the link below to get started. https://jumprope.heartfoundation.org.au/register Students will be skipping throughout the term in PE lessons and dur-
ing lunch break, during this time you can share their online fundrais-
ing page with family and friends to help raise money for this great
cause.
We will hold our school Jump Off Day on Friday 13th September,
this will mark the end of the program and is a chance for everyone to
come together to skip and show off their newly learned skills.

STUDENT ABSENCES
Please remember to contact school on the
morning of any absence (phone message, note,
personal visit, answering machine, email or

from an adult—a verbal message from a sibling
is not sufficient. Also remember to fill in the

Bushfire At-Risk Register - Schools
School procedures for the bushfire season
Fire danger ratings and warnings are used in Victoria to provide clear direction on the safest options
for preserving life.
Schools and children’s services listed on the DET Bushfire At-Risk Register (BARR)
will be closed when a Code Red fire danger rating day is determined in their Bureau of
Meteorology district.
Cavendish Primary School has been identified as being one of
those at high bushfire risk and is listed on the BARR.
Where possible, we will provide parents with up to four days notice of a potential Code Red day
closure by letter and/or SMS message. A Code Red day will be determined by the Emergency
Management Commissioner no later than 1.00 pm the day before the potential closure. Once we
are advised of the confirmation of the Code Red day we will provide you with advice before the
end of the school day.
Once confirmed, the decision to close will not change, regardless of improvements
in the weather forecast. This is to avoid confusion and help your fam ily plan alter-
native care arrangements for your child. It is also important to note that:
No staff will be on site on days where the school is closed due to a forecast Code Red day.
Cavendish Primary School– A Rural Tradition of Excellence 29
School camps will be cancelled if a Code Red fire danger rating day is determined for the Bureau
of Meteorology district in which the camp is located.
As a bus co-ordinating school all bus routes will be cancelled.
On these Code Red days, families are encouraged to enact their Bushfire Survival Plan – on such
days children should never be left at home or in the care of older children.
For those of us living in a bushfire prone area, the CFA advise that when Code Red days are fore-
cast, the safest option is to leave the night before or early on the morning of the Code Red day.
As part of preparing our school for potential hazards such as fire, the school has updated and com-
pleted our Emergency Management Plan.
What can parents do?
Make sure your family’s bushfire survival plan is up-to-date and includes alternative care ar-
rangements in the event that our school is closed.
Ensure we have your current contact details, including your mobile phone numbers. Keep in
touch with us by reading our newsletters, by checking our website http://cavendishps.vic.edu.au/
and by talking to your child’s teacher or any other member of the teaching staff about our emergen-
cy management plan. Immediate contact can be made through the school’s phone number prior to
any Code Red Day on (03) 55742282 or directly to the principal’s mobile on 0402526258.
Most importantly at this time of year, if you’re planning a holiday or short stay in the bush or in a
coastal area, you should check warnings in advance of travel and remain vigilant during your stay.
If your child is old enough, talk to them about bushfires and your family’s bushfire survival plan.
You can access more information about children’s services closures on the Department of Educa-
tion and Training website – see http://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/programs/health/pages/
