Annual Pastoral Appeal

Since the spring of 2015, when Bishop Robert Lynch told me that he wanted me to return from the seminary to serve as Pastor of St. Lawrence, I have been praying in thanksgiving for this wonderful opportunity. I've also been praying for the Holy Spirit's guidance to discern Jesus' will for us as a parish. For these two and a half years that guidance has been nearly palpable. One way in particular that I've experienced this is through the wisdom, love and dedication for St. Lawrence of our pastoral council. As I arrived, our council members were a significant bridge to help me connect to the history and traditions of St. Lawrence as well as a collective voice that educated me about our present needs. Although pastoral councils are not mandated by canon law, when utilized they can certainly be clear examples of the collaborative leadership envisioned by Vatican II. The skills and talents of representative members of the parish serving along side the pastor offer creative, insightful perspective not otherwise attainable. (Finance councils are mandated by canon law. We also have advisory councils for the school and for the Hispanic ministry. More on their work at another time). Our pastoral council meets about ten times a year. Together we seek to identify the needs of our parishioners so that we may each best fulfill our mission as Catholic Christians. We also evaluate the effectiveness of our liturgical worship, Christian fellowship, formation ministries, and Christian service to our community. Along with our staff and my conversations with you, I rely heavily on the input and discernment of this council. In next week's bulletin, I'd like to tell you about some of the topics we've been reflecting on recently and also let you know our members so that you can offer your insights and comments to any of them as well as to me. I'm so, so grateful for the spirit and love for the Lord of the people of St. Lawrence Parish.

Eucharistic Healing Service with

Sister Briege McKenna, O.S.C.

Sr. Briege will conduct a Eucharistic Healing Service at St. Lawrence on Sunday, February 11th. Sr. Briege will have a brief talk at the 12:30p.m. Mass and at 2:00 p.m. the service will begin. There will be formal talk followed by a Eucharistic Healing Service in the church. We welcome all of our parishioners to join in this special event by Sr. Briege and ask for God's healing for all of us.

Sister Briege McKenna:

Sr. Briege was born in Ireland and entered the Sisters of St. Clare at the age of fifteen. Following her final vows and after suffering for more than three years with rheumatoid arthritis, she was transferred to her community in Tampa to teach at St. Lawrence Catholic School. She also came to Tampa with the hope that the Florida sunshine would relieve her suffering. At the age of twenty-four, she was miraculously and instantaneously healed during the celebration of the Eucharist and sometime later received in prayer, the gift of healing for which she has become so widely known.

Spiritual Insight

In 1974, again during prayer, she was given a deep spiritual insight into the call to priesthood. Since then, bishops and priests in many parts of the world have invited her to speak and minister at their retreats and conferences. Her book, "Miracles Do Happen" has been translated into many languages throughout the world.

Desde la primavera de 2015, cuando el Obispo Roberto Lynch me dijo que quería que volviera del seminario para servir como párroco de la Iglesia de San Lorenzo, he estado orando en acción de gracias por esta maravillosa oportunidad. También he estado orando por la guía del Espíritu Santo para discernir la voluntad de Jesús para nosotros como parroquia. Durante estos dos años esa orientación ha sido casi palpable.

Una forma en particular en que he experimentado esto es a través de la sabiduría, el amor y la dedicación para San Lorenzo de nuestro concilio pastoral. Cuando llegué, los miembros de nuestro concilio fueron un puente significativo para ayudarme a conectarme con la historia y las tradiciones de San Lorenzo, así como con una voz colectiva que me educó acerca de nuestras necesidades actuales.

Aunque los concilios pastorales no están obligados por la ley canónica, cuando se utilizan pueden ser claros ejemplos del liderazgo colaborativo previsto por el Vaticano II. Las habilidades y talentos de los miembros representativos de la parroquia que sirven junto con el párroco ofrecen una perspectiva creativa y perspicaz que de otro modo no se puede alcanzar. (Los concilios de finanzas son obligatorios según la ley canónica. También tenemos concilios asesores para la escuela y para los ministerios hispano. Más sobre su trabajo en otro momento).

Nuestro concilio pastoral se reúne unas diez veces al año. Juntos buscamos maneras de identificar las necesidades de nuestros feligreses para que podamos cumplir mejor nuestra misión como Cristianos Católicos. También evaluamos la efectividad de nuestra adoración litúrgica, compañerismo cristiano, ministerios de formación y servicio cristiano a nuestra comunidad. Junto con nuestro personal y mis conversaciones con ustedes, confío mucho en el aporte y el discernimiento de este concilio.

En el boletín de la próxima semana, me gustaría informarles sobre algunos de los temas que hemos estado reflexionando recientemente y también hacerle saber quienes son los miembros para que pueden ofrecer sus ideas y comentarios a cualquiera de ellos, así como a mí. Estoy tan, tan agradecido por el Espíritu Santo y el amor por el Señor de los fieles de la Parroquia de San Lorenzo.

Fiesta Mariana de Nuestra Señora de

Suyapa, Patrona de Honduras

Hoy celebramos a Nuestra Señora de Suyapa o Virgen de Suyapa, es una advocación mariana de la religión católica, cuya representación en una estatua de cedro 6.5 cm se venera en la Basílica de Suyapa, en Tegucigalpa, Hon-duras, donde se mantiene. Existen muchas versiones

acerca del descubrimiento de la Virgen de Suyapa.

La versión más ampliamente aceptada, es la de su descubrimiento milagroso por parte del trabajador agrícola Alejandro Colindres, a finales de enero o principios de febrero en 1747. Según la tradición Hondureña, Colindres y su hijo de 8 años fueron en-viados por su madre a limpiar campos de maíz a la montaña del Piliguín, al noreste Tegucigalpa. Camino de regreso, los atrapó la noche y decidieron dormir afuera. Colindres estaba despierto por un dolor agudo en su costado y se dio cuenta que estaba acostado sobre algo. Versiones posteriores del rela-to afirman que Colindres, sin ver lo que era, tomó y arrojó lo que le molestaba lo más que pudo, pero cuando volvió a acostarse ahí estaba de nuevo. A la mañana siguiente, Colindres descubrió que había es-tado durmiendo sobre la estatuilla de una virgen, que luego llevó al altar de su familia en casa de su madre. No fue hasta luego de 20 años de permanec-er en dicho altar, cuando en 1768 se le acreditó a la estatua su primer milagro reconocido y comenzó a atraer la atención del público entero.

Luego de su primer milagro, la familia de Colindres comenzó a recaudar fondos para construir una capil-la, la cual fue completada en 1777. En 1925, el Papa Pío XI la declaró Patrona de Honduras bajo el título de Nuestra Señora de Suyapa y declaró el 3 de febre-ro como su día festivo. En la década de 1950 se con-struyó una gran basílica próxima a la capilla, nombra-da Basílica de Suyapa. Actualmente, la estatuilla de la virgen pasa la mayor parte del tiempo en la capilla pero cada año se mueve a la Basílica de Suyapa en el

día de su celebración para acomodar a la multitud de personas que asisten a verla, tanto de Honduras co-mo de Centro América.

La estatua de la virgen tiene un grupo de conserjes, todos hombres, conocidos como la Orden de los Ca-balleros de Suyapa; fundada en el siglo XX, la cual es responsable de cuidar a la Virgen y su capilla. También acompañan a la Virgen en todo momento que salga de la capilla para viajar o recorrer Honduras como frecuenta hacerlo cada mes de febrero de to-dos los años. Bendiciones a la comunidad.

Solicitamos a todos que se unan al Obispo Gregory Parkes y a todas las parroquias y misiones de nuestra diócesis, haciendo una promesa de compromiso o una donación para el beneficio de cada parroquia y, más importante aún, para las muchas personas que pasan necesidades en los cinco condados de nuestra diócesis.

Toda donación es valiosa. Algunas veces, es difícil imaginar cómo una sola donación puede marcar la diferencia en una organización del tamaño de nuestra diócesis, pero sí, lo hace.

Todo católico en cada parroquia, cuando unida, puede avanzar la misión de Cristo, amando y sirviendo unos a otros. En tiempos de cambio y de transición, nuestros dones que recibimos de Dios pueden ser más difíciles de identificar; pero debemos recordar que Dios bendice a cada uno de nosotros cada día y que su misericordia no tiene límite.

Uno solo no puede hacerlo todo, pero todos podemos hacer algo. Nuestro enfoque no es una donación igual, sino un sacrificio igual. Sé parte de la bendición y transforma la vida de alguien. Griltitud, Júbilo y Esperanza

Hay tanto por lo cual estar agradecidos en nuestra parroquia yen nuestra Iglesia local. Al aproximarnos al 502 Aniversario de nuestra diócesis, podemos mirar con gratitud al pasado por todo lo que hemos recibido, celebrar con júbilo nuestro presente y confiar en el futuro con esperanza, mientras que construimos una Iglesia dinamica para las generaciones futuras.

Reconociendo con gratitud todo lo que hemos recibido de previas generaciones, podemos ver que,

cuando unidos, podemos extender con júbilo la misión de Cristo, amando y sirviendo los unos a los otros. Nuestra Apelación Pastoral Anual lAPA) une a nuestra familia diocesana para ir más alla de nosotros mismos y de nuestra parroquia y dar esperilnza a

miles a traves de los ministerios, programas y servicios que enriquecen una manera de vivir centrada en Cristo .

APA es una oportunidad para compartir nuestras ofrendas, apoyando a nuestra parroquia y a nuestra comunidad diocesana, en el nombre de Jesucristo. Es una manera eficiente y económica de proveer servicios necesarios para nuestra parroquia, además de ofrecer ministerios y programas que llegan mas allá de los límites de nuestra comunidad parroquial. Toda donación, toda oración y todo sacrificio son bienvenidos con gratitud, usados con gran júbilo y buena administración, y llevan esperanza a quienes buscan el amor y la misericordia de Cristo. iOremos para que todos nuestros feligreses se unan a nosotros y apoyen a APA de 2018!

Estimados hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Por 50 años, lo que hemos hecho por los más pequeños de nuestros hermanos, lo hemos hecho como discípulos de Cristo para la gloria de Dios. La ocasión de nuestro 502 Aniversario es una gran oportunidad para celebrar la Diócesis de Sto Petersburg y todo lo que ofrece. Este año, APA reconoce nuestras bendiciones y da testigo de las buenas obras compartidas con aquellos a quienes servimos.

La Apelación Pastoral Anual de 2018, Bienaventumdos nosotros, celebra quienes som05 y lo que hacemos como una familia de fe católica .

Participar en APA nos da oportunidades de dar a conocer nuestra fe y de llevar la esperanza de Dios y su amor a todos aquellos que encontramos.

Bienaventurados nosotros que sentimos gratitud por ~estro pasado, júbilo en el momento presente y ¡peranza en el futuro.
