Sixth Sunday of Easter

We see the theme of the “love of God” in both the second reading as well as the Gospel today and as we study these two readings they attest to the true understanding of what love really is in the Christian sense.

The first aspect that we must realize is that God loves us first. God loves into being as His creatures, God loves us into redemption by the Son becoming man and pouring Himself out on the cross for us

PASTOR´S MESSAGE

A

s we all know from personal experience, our church is a very busy place.

Masses daily and many on weekends, Baptisms, Marriages, Funerals,

Confirmations, Penance Celebrations, personal devotions and prayers and

recently Communal Anointing of the Sick. All of these sacramental encounters with God

strengthen us and help us to grow in holiness. Our church truly is the House of God and

where the People of God encounter the "Living God" in ways that are transformational.

This Saturday we will gather to celebrate our greatest sacrament, the Holy Eucharist,

being received for the first time by the children of our parish families. This reception of

the Holy Eucharist is a significant and joy filled occasion for all of our larger parish family

and for the families of our children. We are "One Body In Christ".

This is because the Holy Eucharist is both the center of our spiritual lives and the source of our unity with each other and

with God. For over 2,000 years Catholics have gathered to be fed by Word and Sacrament and to be united in Christ as

baptized members of His Body. As the Parable of the Vine and the Branches reminds us, united with Christ our Vine, we flourish

unattached to Him, we spiritually languish, and die. The immense privilege of being united with Christ in the most intense way

possible is what we are sharing with our children. Each family present for the First Holy Communion Mass will be passing on a

priceless heritage and a most important family value and practice. Families pass on, form and support faith and, like Christ,

each family is itself a spiritual vine supporting the faith of all family members especially our youngest. Participation in the Holy

Eucharist should be understood as the most significant moment in the faith life of the family. It should be one that completes

the fabric of family prayer, scripture reading, spiritual devotions, love and forgiveness and care for neighbor. The "First Communion"

is just that, the first, in a lifetime of Holy Communions that will support and nourish our children spiritually throughout their lives.

Families that together participate in the Holy Eucharist faithfully will be blessed with an abundance of love, peace and joy.

As important as the food that we share around our tables, the Holy Eucharist keeps us spiritually alive and capable of living out

our Baptismal promises.

We congratulate and are prayerfully united with all of our First Communicants and their families as they take this most

important step in their spiritual development.

This weekend we also celebrate Mothers Day and have an opportunity to recognize

and thank all of the mothers of the parish for the immense gift they are to us. It goes

without saying that most of us received our first religious instruction from our mothers.

It was not so much teaching with words but by the example of their generous and

self-sacrificing love. For all of these lessons of love, we thank our mothers and pray that

God's most abundant blessings shower upon them and bless them.

Mary, Our Blessed Mother, pray for us and keep us always in your love, especially

our mothers.

The “Catholic Spring” of 1426!

Our patron St. Joan of Arc rallied the French Army in the victorious battle

of Orleans over the English in May of 1426. Two years later, she was

captured and martyred for not renouncing her faith. Her courage

inspired the army. And it should inspire us. Today we

are being attacked: our values, our schools, our

hospitals, our clergy, our religious freedom. As good

Stewards we must face the challenge and follow

St. Joan’s example into battle. This is our

“Catholic Spring”. Rise up! Be

pro-active! Use your God given gift of

Time to pray, worship, and defend our

Faith publicly. Use your Gift of Talent

to work for justice and protection of

religious freedom. Use your gift of

Treasure to support our church, school,

and ministry programs that promote

the Lord’s mission on earth. The

Barbarians are at our gates. Rise Up!

GOD BLESS OUR 157 ST. JOAN OF ARC

FIRST COMMUNICANTS

"Dear Jesus, You are the Bread of Life. You feed us, as a Shepherd feeds His sheep.

The night before You died, You took bread and wine, blessed them, and gave them to Your disciples.

You said, 'This is my Body. This is My blood, given for you.' Thank you, dear Jesus, for always loving me.

I very much want to receive You in Holy Communion.

May this Communion fill me with joy and peace as You come into my heart. Amen."

CATHOLICS CALLED TO WITNESS

Inspiring Catholics to Live Their Faith

are holding a community meeting

regarding our Religious Freedom and

First Amendment Right.

Mr. Juan Bauta a Catholic lawyer from

St. Louis Catholic Church in Miami will

speak to you on the recent Health and

Human Services mandate that forces Catholic institutions to provide

health insurance that supplies free-of-charge sterilization and

contraceptives, including abortion-inducing drugs. He will explain that, as

stated by Cardinal Timothy Dolan “This is a freedom of religion battle.

It is not about contraception. It is not about a woman’s health. We are

talking about an unwarranted, unprecedented, radical intrusion into a

church’s ability to teach, serve and sanctify on its own.”

Don’t miss this opportunity to learn what is happening around us;

“We have become certain of two things; Religious Freedom is under

attack and we will not cease our struggle to protect it.”

- CARDINAL TIMOTHY DOLAN

We invite you to join your fellow concerned Catholics on Wednesday,

May 16th, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in O’Shea Hall at 7:00pm.

All are welcome, please be sure to bring your family and friends.

Families and Marriages need many unprecedented graces living in these

unprecedented times. These graces will be abundant this day!!

A baby asked God, “They tell me you are

sending me to earth tomorrow, but how

am I going to live there being

so small and helpless?”

God said, “Your angel will be waiting for

you and will take care of you.”

The child further inquired. “But tell me,

here in heaven I don’t have to do any-

thing but sing and smile to be happy.”

God said, “Your angel will sing for you

and will also smile for you. And you will

feel your angel’s love and be very

happy.”

Again the small child asked, “And how

am I going to be able to understand

when people talk to me if I don’t know

the language?”

God said, “Your angel will tell you the

most beautiful and sweet words you will

ever hear, and with much patience and

care, your angel will teach you how to

speak.”

“And what am I going to do when I want

to talk to you”?

God said, “Your angel will place your

hands together and will teach you how to

pray.”

“Who will protect me?”

God said, “Your angel will defend you

even if it means risking its life.”

“But I will always be sad because I will

not see you anymore.”

God said, “Your angel will always talk to

you about Me and will teach you the way

to come back to Me, even though I will

always be next to you.”

At that moment there was much peace in

Heaven, but voices from Earth could be

heard and the child hurriedly asked,

“God, if I am to leave now, please tell

me my angel’s name.”

God said, “You will simply call her,

Mom.”

CONGRATULATIONS TO SIR ROBERT QUILLARD ON HIS RECENT

AWARD AS KNIGHT OF LEGION OF HONOR OF FRANCE

Sir Robert and Millie Quillard have been St. Joan of Arc parishioners for 32 years. Robert is

active in the Knights of Columbus and Millie has been active in the Council of Catholic Women

for almost all that time. Robert & Millie also participated in the Pre-Marital Preparation

Ministry (PREPARE) at our church for 14 years. They are an exemplar couple. They have two

daughters and a son, and two grandchildren and have been married for 63 years!

On May 3rd Robert received the Knight of Legion of Honor award from the French

Consulate for his decision to fight for freedom during World War II, the General Consul of

France wrote: “…was an admirable act, demonstrating your courage and selflessness.

The solidarity you lent our country and people as a soldier will never be forgotten.

Please be assured that we are eternally grateful.”

Robert received France’s highest military distinction and is now inducted into the French

Legion of Honor. He received this honor among family and friends. He was happy to see

three of his St. Joan of Arc Knights of Columbus friends attend this wonderful patriotic

program. In the past, in addition to this award, Robert received the Bronze Star from the

United States of America. He was originally stationed in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and in

WWII he served in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.

We are very proud to have Robert and Millie in our St. Joan of Arc parish family. When

asked about his 63 years of marriage Robert smiled and said: “ If she asked me to marry

her now, I would do it all over again!” May God continue to bless you Robert and Millie!

Congratulations again on a well deserved medal!

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION BREAKFAST

St. Joan of Arc Catholic School is always appreciative of the volunteer work that its

families provide every year in order to make school and parish events successful.

Whether it is a Family Liturgy, a class art project, or the annual auction, school parents

and grandparents are very generous in giving of their time, talents, and treasure for the

benefit of our faith community. The school shows its appreciation by sponsoring a

volunteer breakfast in May, inviting any individual who has volunteered during the year.

The turnout for the 2011-2012 breakfast was very good, and volunteers were treated

to a delicious meal, catered by L'Ecole, which is also the school lunch catering company.

Sr. Ellen was on hand to personally thank all the volunteers and to encourage their

support of Catholic education. To our volunteers: thank you again! You know we could

never accomplish all the great things that happen here at St. Joan of Arc without your

valuable contributions and service!

“PRAYERS FOR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY” NOW PART OF A NATIONWIDE PRAYER CAMPAIGNThe Administrative Committee for the United States Conference of

the protection of religious freedom and conscience rights. To support this

effort, the USCCB has developed prayers sources in both English and

Spanish. These can be found on the diocesan website at

www.diocesepb.org. Look on the center of the home page for the

“Religious Freedom and Conscience Protection” image. Click on that

image for the prayers and the latest information related to the U.S.

16 ST. JOAN OF ARC MAYO 13

MINISTERIO HISPANO. AVISOS PARROQUIALES
