Reflecting on the Gospel Being a  faithful disciple does not mean always doing  the  logical  thing nor  the most practical  thing.   Like God in the first reading – who relented punishing Israel for unfaithfulness because God “brought [them] out of the land of Egypt” – we, too, must put aside our short‐sightedness and be merciful and forgiving.  If we  find  this  difficult, we  only  need  to  remember God’s  utter  fidelity  and  compassion toward us.  Forgiveness is never easy and so much more difficult when the other seems to hurt us intentionally.   Perhaps one way  to approach  this  is  to consider  the good  in  the other who needs our  forgiveness.   When we are angry,  recite a “litany” of positive virtues.  When we want  to strike back,  think of  the dignity of the other because he or she is a baptised son or daughter of God.  Maybe we also need to consider our own goodness!  If we allow anger, resentment, or  jealousy to fester  in us (as did the older son  in the gospel), we are blocking our ability  to grow.  We are  limiting our openness  to being  found when we are  lost.   What may help us  to  let go of  choosing death  is  to  remember God’s mercy and  compassion  so  faithfully shown to us throughout history.  We don’t know the next chapter in the prodigal son’s family saga, but we do know the  father’s response:  he welcomed his son back home with great rejoicing.  Such  is so very true for our heavenly Father.

With the impending CTIC Winter Night Shelter Scheme, coming in to effect in a few weeks time, inflatable beds and sleeping bags will be needed, so any of those you may have, surplus to requirements, would be gratefully received. A BACKGROUND TO MODERN THEOLOGY Father Michael Morton from St. Winefride’s, Sandbach is running a series of talks on 21st 7:30pm at St. Gabriel’s, Alsager; 28

ST JOSEPH OF CUPERTINO FEAST DAY 18th SEPTEMBER St Joseph of Cupertino  is the patron saint of studying and of flying (i.e. aircrafts).  Even  though,  St  Joseph  was  uneducated  and  a  very  slow learner,  he  managed  to  pass  his  exams  making  him  a  Deacon,  and eventually  a  Priest.  Miraculously,  he  was  questioned  on  the  only passage  from  the  Bible  that  he  knew well.  St  Joseph’s  prayers were answered after many months of seemingly hopeless studying. He is also known  to have  levitated  on  over  70  occasions  at  the mention  of  the Virgin Mary,  to whom he was greatly devoted. Moreover,  there were many  people  greatly  intolerant  towards  St  Joseph  on  account  of  his learning disabilities. St  Joseph’s  success  story makes him a beacon  for those  undergoing  great  difficulties  during  exams.  I  know  this  from personal experience and urge you  to pray  to him on his  feast day, 18 September. His prayer card is at the back of church if you are interested. God bless, Izzy Backs.  SYRO‐MALABAR MASS IN MALAYALAM 

The Syro‐Malabar Catholic Community  in Crewe will be celebrating Holy Mass in Malayalam on Saturday 17th September 2016 at 11:30am in St.Mary’s.  Rev. Fr. Lonappan Arangassery will lead the Holy Mass.  All are most welcome to attend.

SVP AWARENESS MONTH During this week we consider – Hunger. 

According to Oxfam an estimated 3 million people  in the  UK  are  malnourished  or  at  risk  of  becoming malnourished. Last year SVP members gave out  food parcels  on  over  25,000  occasions,  and  assisted with soup runs and food banks. We also participated in the government  food  poverty  enquiry,  providing  case studies and data on the extent of the problem across the country.

YOUTH EVENT: EXPLORE IV  SUNDAY 9TH OCTOBER 2016 

Theme:  Be Apostles of Mercy Venue:  Our Lady’s Parish Hall, Ellesmere Port This  is being organised by  the Commission  for  the New Evangelisation of Youth.  It is for young people from Year 10 onwards and will take place on Sunday 9th October from 1:30pm to 5pm.  

It will offer an opportunity to share experiences of both World Youth Day and the Diocesan Lourdes’ Pilgrimage.  The young people will be invited to take time to focus on what they would like to do as “Acts of Mercy” within their own locality.  The day will conclude with Mass.

NATIONAL CATHOLIC YOUTH EVENT FLAME III: 10,000 REASONS, 

WEMBLEY: Saturday 11th March 2017 

Flame  III  –10,000  Reasons  is  taking  place  in Wembley  on  Saturday  11th March 2017.  The Commission for the New Evangelisation of Youth will be block  booking  tickets  and  organising  transport  in  order  to  offer  an opportunity  for  our  parishes  and  schools  to  send  young  people  to represent  the  Diocese.  You  may  like  to  visit www.cymfed.org.uk/flame2017  but  please  don’t  book  tickets  directly.  Further information from the Curial offices should be available shortly. See poster on the notice boards.   

 

ACCOMMODATION REQUIRED URGENTLY A  young  lady  from  the  Netherlands  (originally  from  China) who will  be studying at the MMU (MSc Strategic Leadership and Change) from January 2017  is  seeking  affordable  accommodation  for  a  year.  If  you  can  help please speak to Helena during office hours.  Thank you. 

 ST PAUL’S PANTRY  Two volunteers are required in the warehouse part of our work‐ moving furniture in the centre and accompanying the driver. Must be physically fit, a driving licence would be useful but not important. A full day or committed half day is required. Please contact Chris on 01270 586186.  AND Two volunteers are required with I.T. experience who can support 2 adults with learning difficulties. One volunteer is required between 10.00‐12.00 on Tuesdays and the other 10.00‐12.00 on Thursdays. Both are on a long term basis after initial 4 week trial. You may know all the I.T. jargon but you are needed to translate this into easy terminology so learners can develop their skills.  Please contact Lexi on 01270 586186  CAN YOU SPARE 1‐2 HOURS WEEKLY CHATTING WITH ELDERLY PATIENTS AT LEIGHTON HOSPITAL? The  Royal  Voluntary  Service  are  honoured  to  be working with  Leighton Hospital  in providing a ward befriending service  for  lonely and vulnerable patients on wards 4, 7 and 15. If you are aged 18+ and feel that you could spend time chatting and comforting elderly patients on ward, then please contact Helen Backs on 07423 467609.
