VOCATION AWARENESS

A few days ago we received

an update from the Diocese

regarding the Disciples' Re-

sponse Fund. Our parish tar-

get was $11,622 and we have

already contributed almost

$15,000 with another $5000

pledged and yet to be paid. That is a wonderful re-

sponse. Remember that the parish will get back 50%

of everything contributed over our target. On behalf

of the Diocese and the Parish, I thank you for ful-

filling your pledge.

Last Thursday was the thirty-fourth anniversary of

Bishop McRaith's ordination as our Bishop. As I

previously told you, he had been in the hospital for

about a week but he is much improved now and is

back at the Carmel Home in Owensboro. I had the

opportunity to visit him on his anniversary and to

assure him of our continued prayers for him.

Our Knights of Columbus Council has graciously

committed to a two-year sponsorship of broadcasting

our Sunday Mass on WPJP Catholic Radio. Last

week they gave us $600 which will allow us to pur-

chase the equipment needed to air the Mass. As I

previously told you, we plan to begin this as soon as

possible in the new year. Thanks Knights for your

on-going support.

Enjoy this last week of Advent and the coming

Christmas feast. Please plan to come to the Open

House in the rectory on December 30th.

Have a great week! Fr. John

THE PASTOR’S CORNER

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

By now, the first Christmas carols are heard in the home, but usually not yet in church. What is a “carol” any-way? Originally, a carol was any kind of communal song sung at a festival such as a harvest. By the thirteenth cen-tury or so, carols were associated with household celebra-tions. “Carol” comes from the Old French carula, meaning a circular dance. Carols weren’t for church, since the lan-guage of liturgy was Latin and the carols were in the com-mon language. Their characteristic sound comes from me-dieval chord patterns, and they often have strong refrains for everyone to sing. Even in the churches of the Refor-mation, carols didn’t make it into church services until the 1870s or so, since there was a preference for psalms. An-glicans resisted popular carols; most of our beloved carols came via the Methodists, an offshoot of the Church of England. The Catholic Church generally didn’t admit car-ols to liturgy either, but we didn’t make laws against them. We are told that the beloved carol “Silent Night” comes from Catholic Austria and a harried parish music director. Joseph Mohr, the priest of St. Nicholas in Obern-dorf, had written the words in 1816, but offered them to his music director, Franz Gruber, when the church’s organ broke. Mohr asked him to write a melody that could be played on guitar as a prelude to Mass. Gruber finished the tune just hours before midnight Mass in 1818. The people were shocked to hear a guitar in church, but were charmed by the sweet lullaby. The church was swept away by a flood in the 1990s and the village later relocated, but the townspeople have set up the “Silent Night Memorial Chapel” at the site. Today the carol is in print in some three hundred languages. How wonderful that the pipe organ broke on that night! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

“The angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife

into your home”

This Fourth Sunday of the Advent Sea-son challenges each of us to respond to the angel’s invita-tion, by imitating St. Joseph and by welcoming Christ into our lives and homes. Once we allow the saving power of Jesus into our lives, we will never again be the same. This is Good News!

FAITH FORMATION & SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION

SUMMONED BY GOD

As Christmas draws near, Advent’s scrip-tures lure us into a world of dreams, signs, wonders, and the mira-cle of the virgin birth. Too often we allow the great stories of our faith, the ones that are most familiar, simply to wash over us. Today’s Gospel account of the events leading up to the birth of the Lord reads like a present-day soap opera. Yet Joseph’s courage, even in the midst of what must have been an incredibly confus-ing time, provides a model for us. Each week, we are summoned by God to em-brace the way of goodness and truth through the proclamation of God’s holy word. Like Joseph, we are called to do as the Lord commands us. As we stand at the threshold of Christmas, let us have the courage to be open to whatever it is that the Lord will require of us as we celebrate the miracle of Bethlehem.

PARISH & FAMILY LIFE

Ten Commandments for Welcoming

Visitors at Mass Welcoming newcomers to your parish is not just the job of the pastoral staff, ushers, ministers of hospitali-ty or greeters. It is everyone’s responsibility. Here are ten things you can do to provide better hospitality in your parish. 1. Cultivate the virtue of hospitality at Mass. Many Mass attendees tend to gather into little cliques and ignore those who are not members of their partic-ular clique. They are not really inhospitable, just heedless of the need for hospitality. Make hospitality a new habit when you go to Mass. 2. Come early, leave late. Instead of rushing to Mass to be there on time, and then rushing out at its conclusion, make time to come a little early and linger just a bit later. Make room in your busy life to greet and spend time with others at Mass. 3. Go in peace to greet someone! Seek out someone you’ve not met before. Shake their hand, introduce yourself, and take a few moments to welcome them to your parish home, God’s house. 4. Welcome everyone. Not only do visitors need your warm welcome, regu-lar Mass attendees also need a friendly greeting. De-velop a good handshake and be enthusiastic about your parish. You are greeting others in the name of Christ. 5. Help newcomers connect. While you are getting to know visitors, introduce them to other parishioners as the opportunity presents itself. Feel free to invite visitors to sit next to you. 6. Say goodbye with genuine warmth. After Mass, bid farewell to visitors, inviting them to return next week. Introduce them to the pastor if the opportunity arises. 7. Avoid parish business. Avoid conducting parish business with others imme-diately before or after Mass. Focus on visitors. 8. Give visitors information about the parish. Ensure that a visitor has a bulletin and other infor-mation about the parish before they leave. If there is a social gathering after Mass, invite them. 9. Be part of a greeting ministry team Parishes are always in need of greeters to serve regu-larly, and provide ongoing formation to new greeters. Help out, be a greeter. If your parish doesn’t have greeters, now is a good time to start! 10. Greet those who already minister in the area of hospitality. It isn’t necessary to neglect the people who are already ministers of hospitality in or-der to make visitors feel at home. A simple wave and a smile go a long way.

ANTIPHONS OF ADVENT

The Roman Church has been singing the "O" Antiphons since at least the eighth century. They are the antiphons that accompany the Magnificat canticle of Evening Prayer from December 17-23. They are a magnificent theology that uses ancient biblical imagery drawn from the messianic hopes of the Old Testament to proclaim the coming Christ as the fulfillment not only of Old Testament hopes, but present ones as well. Their repeated use of the imperative "Come!" embodies the longing of all for the Divine Messiah.

Each Antiphon begins with "O" and addresses Jesus with a unique title which comes from the prophecies of Isaias and Micheas (Micah), and whose initials, when read backwards, form an acrostic for the Latin "Ero Cras" which means "Tomorrow I come." Those titles for Christ are:

Sapientia Adonai Radix Jesse Clavis David Oriens Rex Gentium Emmanuel

December 17 O Wisdom of our God Most High, guiding creation with power and love: come to teach us the path of knowledge!

December 18 O Leader of the House of Israel, giver of the Law to Moses on Sinai: come to rescue us with your mighty power!

December 19 O Root of Jesse’s stem, sign of God’s love for all his people: come to save us without delay!

December 20 O Key of David, opening the gates of God’s eternal Kingdom: come and free the prisoners of darkness!

December 21 O Radiant Dawn, splendor of eternal light, sun of justice: come and shine on those who dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death.

December 22 O King of all nations and keystone of the Church: come and save man, whom you formed from the dust!

December 23 O Emmanuel, our King and Giver of Law: come to save us, Lord our God!

Diocesan Good Works

In today’s Gospel we hear

of the coming of Emman-

uel, which means “God is

with us.” We celebrate

three Advents: the birth of

Christ, his Second Com-

ing, and his presence in

the world today. Our daily

lives are attended by God’s presence. Indeed,

“God is with us.” The Good News of Christ’s

Incarnation is that we are the sign,

“sacrament,” of Christ’s presence in the world.

People are supposed to see us, see how we love

one another, see how we treat the stranger

among us, give comfort to the poor and afflict-

ed, share the Good News with joy. They see

how good stewards are the light of Christ. And

there can be no possible response except to say:

“God is here!”
