Did You Know? RCIA Information

Youth Ministry

The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a process for all inquirers seeking to enter the Catholic Church. Inquirers fall into three categories, Catechu-mens, people who have never been baptized, Candi-dates, those who have received a valid Baptism in an-other Christian faith, and anyone baptized as a Catholic who has not completed initiation sacraments of First Communion and/or Confirmation. Topic for October 29: Revelation: New Testament If you are interested in more information about RCIA, please contact Dcn. John Kruer at 818-991-3915, ext. 104 or [email protected].

The next meeting of your Men’s

Club will be on:

Monday, November 5th

Our Guest Speaker Will Be:

Ramsay Devereux

What is in the food you are eating?

Ramsay will be talking to us about Genetically En-gineered food products. An understanding of GE is important if we are to vote knowledgeably on Proposition 37 on November 6th. This proposition would require labeling on specific food products to allow the consumer to make a choice. He will ex-plain what Genetically Engineered food is and what it is not, how long it has been available for use in this country, how much of our processed food contains GE material, what if any studies have been conducted and the results, and why we should know what is in the food that we provide for our families. Ramsay Devereux has been a General Contractor for over 30 years. He became interested in all things related to health since his wife was diag-nosed with M.S. 6 years ago. He is a volunteer on the “Yes on # 37” campaign. Come and join us for a fun and informative evening of socializing, presentations and talk plus excellent food with your fellow parishioners. So-cial time at 6:30, complimentary dinner at 7:00 and our meeting at 7:30 Contact Bill Keane at [email protected]

As we prepare for our Christmas Gala we turn once again to you, our parishioners, for support. We are in need of items for the Silent and Live Auctions. In the past, you have so generously do-nated sports or theatre tickets, vacation homes, art pieces, wine baskets, golf oppor-tunities, jewelry, decorative items, toys, etc. and other items that you have come up with, that have made for great auction items. We ask, please, that all items donated be new. Your finest contribution of all may be your energetic participation on the Auction Commit-tee. We are looking for volunteers to join us in keeping the Auction special and different each year. Your involvement, at any level, would be greatly appreciated, helping us help St. Max and all of its worthy Ministries. If you would like to contribute, join the committee or have questions please call: Mary Kay Doane 805-496-1213

CHRISTMAS GALA

NEW COMMITTEE MEMBERS WELCOME

RECOGNIZING JESUS The star of today’s Gospel is a panhandler. Barti-maeus is blind, yes, but he is probably also home-less and filthy, a real nuisance to respectable citi-zens. Even so, it is Bartimaeus who recognizes Je-sus as the Messiah, places all his faith in him, throws aside everything he has (his cloak), begs him for mercy, receives new vision, and follows Jesus on the way to suffering and death in Jerusa-lem. How desperate will we have to get before we can do the same? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

“What is the Church if not the as-sembly of all the saints?” wrote the fifth-century bishop Niceta. Each Sunday, in the Profession of Faith, we express our belief in the com-munion of saints, the one body—with Christ as its head—made up of

“those who are pilgrims on earth, the dead who are being purified and the blessed in heaven.” We are not alone! The preface for All Saints begins, “For today by your gift we celebrate the festival of your city, the heavenly Jerusalem, our mother.” What astound-ing words! All Saints Day (like every solemnity) is nothing less than the festival of the fullness of the paschal mystery, our dying and rising in Christ. Of course, now in autumn the mystery comes “clothed” in glorious autumnal garb, and so we celebrate our Easter faith with signs of the har-vest, signs of nature’s dying, signs of the “homecoming” that happens naturally when the weather gets cold and families find themselves to-gether more often. While the dying can point to our own mortality, the homecoming reminds us of the mystery of our own resurrection with Christ. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
