RCIA Information

Coming in October

September 2, 2012 Page Three 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Third Age Meeting

Outreach Ministry Weekend

The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is an extensive process for all inquirers seeking to enter the Catholic Church. Inquirers fall into three categories, Catechumens (people who have never been baptized), Candidates (those who have received a valid Baptism in another Christian faith), and anyone baptized as a Catholic who has not completed initiation sacraments (First Com-munion and/or Confirmation). Our process continues throughout the year, focus-ing on the meaning of the weekly Scriptural read-ings spanning the liturgical seasons, while famil-iarizing inquirers with Catholic practices and the basic truths and traditions of our faith. This pro-gram is open to all, regardless of religious affilia-tion or non-affiliation, who have a sincere interest in becoming a Catholic Christian. St. Max parish-ioners are also invited – to reacquaint yourselves with your Catholic faith or to serve as sponsors for our individual inquirers. Catechumen inquirers who elect to complete the process will receive the Sacraments of Initiation and formally enter the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil service on Holy Saturday, March 30, 2013. Reception of Candidates will take place on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 7, 2013. The 2012-2013 RCIA process will start with a Welcome Dinner on Wednesday, September 5, at 6:00 p.m., hosted by last year’s class. Our official first meeting will be Monday, September 10, with a light dinner at 7:00 p.m. and the meet-ing starting at 7:30 p.m. If you are interested in more information about RCIA, please contact Dcn. John Kruer at 818-991-3915, ext. 104 or [email protected]. If you’d like to at-tend our Welcome Dinner on September 5, please contact Linda Huybrechts at 818-486-1226 or

Coming in October…. Greg Stone, Author of Taming the Wolf Will offer a 6 week workshop on managing conflicts that threaten your spiritual journey. Watch future bulletins for more details.

The next meeting of your Men’s Club will be on:

Monday, September 10th

Our Guest Speaker Will Be:

Tim Desmond

Wine 101

Tim will lead a wine tasting and lively talk on a wide range of wine related topics. These will include: wine making, wine styles and service, food and wine parings, just to name a few. We will be tasting wines from LA’s own San Antonio Winery. The winery’s owner, the Riboli Family, has been making wine on the banks of the LA River for over 90 years and was kind enough to donate the wines for this event. Dick and Arlene Schraer, parishioners and owners of Pizzaria La Piccola, 1321 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd. in Thousand Oaks, are graciously donating all the food. Tim and Sally Desmond are long time St. Max parishioners. Tim has been involved with wine almost his entire career. He started as a waiter and bartender, working as a distributor sales rep in Chicago, and then in sales and marketing roles for both wineries and wine importers. Come and join us for a fun and informative evening of talk and wine tasting, plus excellent food, with your fellow parishioners. Social time at 6:30, complimentary dinner at 7:00 and our meeting at 7:30. **The Men’s Club meetings are open to all men of the parish. On some occasions these meetings will be open to all parishioners, male and female. On these occa-sions the meetings will be publicized as open to all parishioners.

Our Meeting Format Except for holiday weekends, meetings are held on the 1st Monday of every month in O’Reilly Hall, Room #1. Our fellowship format is simply based on getting to know one another and includes a compli-mentary meal and refreshments. Social time starts at 6:30 with dinner served at 7:00 and meeting announcements at 7:30.

For information regarding the Men’s Club, please contact Bill Keane at:

DOERS OF THE WORD The second reading for today begins a five-week series of selections from James, a letter that is classified among the so-called “catholic” (or universal) epistles because they are addressed to a general audience ra-ther than to one particular community. Today’s text of-fers important advice for Christians of every generation. God is first cited as the author of all gifts, and in partic-ular, reference is made to the gift of baptism by which we have been made the “first fruits” of the new crea-tion. What follows is advice based on a very Jewish under-standing of the “word” as an active force, operative in the world. We are reminded that unless we, too, be-come “doers” of the word, our claim to faith is empty. Today and in subsequent weeks the author reminds us that it is equally important to do the “works” of love, for example, by caring for the “orphans and widows in their affliction.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Labor Day originated in 1882 in New York City under the aegis of the Knights of Labor. Congress made it a legal holiday in 1894. Observing it this week gives us a good opportunity to reflect on the Catholic Church’s social teachings for the last century or so. On May 15, 1891, Pope Leo XIII issued the encyclical Rerum Novarum on the condition of the working classes and labor. In doing so, he initiated a century in which Catholic teaching be-came more and more involved in the social issues of the day. Unfortunately relegated to the shadows while the bright lights of controversy shine on other issues, Catholic so-cial teaching remains largely unknown to many Catho-lics. It is the Catholic Church that championed such no-tions as a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work, and con-tinues to uphold the dignity of the human person against attacks from governments and corporations. Nearly every pope since Leo XIII has issued teachings on the subject. Take some time this Labor Day to famil-iarize yourself with some aspect of the Church’s social teachings. In doing so, you will be taking responsibility as a member of the Body of Christ to commit yourself to the care of your neighbor. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Please contact Eric or Brandie Pryor at 805-241-1586 with any questions.

Listen to Your Children

This summer, when your children are out of school, on different schedules, are meeting new people and going to new places, make sure that you talk to them often about their experiences and the people they’ve met. Listen carefully to your children. If possible, observe and get to know the other children and adults who are part of your children’s summertime fun. Above all, communicate your safety concerns to your children. Make sure they know that they can come to you with any concerns they may have about the people they in-teract with. And, if you hear of or observe behaviors that may be inappropriate, make sure to communicate your feelings to people who are in a position to inter-vene. Communication is key to creating and maintain-ing a safe environment all year round.

For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650

Religious Education registration forms for fall classes are availa-ble in the breezeway. Classes begin the week of September 16th.

Religious Education is a lifelong process. As our lives change so does our understanding of our God and our faith. We have never learned everything. For our young children we offer First Communion preparation which, normally, begins in first grade with the sacraments of First Confession and First Communion received in second grade. Often First Communion preparation is delayed until a child is older. We are very happy to have your children at any age. After First Communion we offer weekday, after school classes, from third through sixth grade. Our seventh and eighth graders have the oppor-tunity to attend bi-weekly classes on Tuesday evening with the alternate Tuesday evening as a youth ministry experience called MAX PAX. One of our favorite series of classes is called Fam-ily Faith. This is offered to children in third grade and older and their parents. These classes meet on the first Sunday of the month from October through April. A faith topic is presented to parents and children which corresponds to the child’s text-book. During the following month parents review the topic with their child. If you would like more information please call or e-mail the Religious Education Office. We look for-ward to seeing you this year.
