Twenty-eight Sunday in Ordinary Time October 13, 2013
The liturgy of the eucharist refers to the part of
the Mass that begins with the collection and
the preparation of the altar and the gifts of
bread and wine. What are we doing in these
actions? Much of the answer lies in the word
eucharist. Derived from a Greek word, it
means “thanksgiving.”
The eucharistic prayer, beginning with “The
Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up
your hearts...,” and ending with the Great
Amen, is the central part of the Mass. It is
proclaimed over bread and wine, the basic
signs of life and death, food and drink from the
tables of ordinary people. We praise God for
creation. We give God thanks and praise for
Jesus, and for Jesus’ saving deeds. We ask
God that the abundance promised at this holy
table may be shared with the whole world,
with all who seek God, even with the dead.
ALWAYS THANKSGIVING The eucharistic prayer—although said aloud
only by the priest—is not “the priest’s prayer.”
The entire prayer requires every baptized
person’s full, conscious and active
participation. That does not mean that
everyone reads the words aloud—that
wouldn’t work! Rather, it means that we must
join our hearts to the words sung or spoken by
the priest, that we must assume an attentive
posture, put aside the missalette and sing our
parts with gusto and sincerity.
In the end, eucharist is what our life as
Christians is all about. In suffering or in joy, in
confusion or routine, our life is always to be
praise, always to be thanksgiving, always to be
a sharing of God’s abundance with those in
need. Copyright © 1997 Archdiocese of Chicago: Liturgy Training

CATHOLICISM The New Evangelization
The Catholic Faith is not about myths or legends, symbols or literary devices.
It’s about an encounter so overwhelming that you want to tell the whole world.
IT’S AN ENCOUNTER WITH JESUS CHRIST.
Throughout history, the call of Christ has sent people to the corners of the earth with a message of great joy - a message that
has built civilizations, inspired cultures, and even sent some believers to prison and others to their graves.
We have the same call. That’s evangelization.
CATHOLICISM: The New Evangelization explores the Church’s mission within the challenges of contemporary culture.
Created by Father Robert Barron, the documentary and study program focuses on the cultural obstacles the Church faces
today, such as the emergence of “the new atheism” and relativistic attitudes toward questions of faith and morality. Explore
these topics and more through the Study CATHOLICISM: The New Evangelization Study Program.
DATES: Wednesdays, Oct. 16 - Dec. 4
TIMES: 9:00AM – 10:30AM
LOCATION: Ursuline Hall
TO REGISTER CONTACT: Betty Appelbaum-Meier 821-3971,

INVESTMENT GIFT GIVING STRATEGIES FOR 2013 Individuals can donate up to $100,000 per year directly from a
traditional or Roth IRA to qualifying charities. This is attractive
to some investors because qualified charitable distributions
(QCD’s) can be used to satisfy required minimum distributions
(RMD’s) from an IRA without having the distribution included in
their income.
Consider a gift of stocks, bonds or mutual funds instead of cash
whenever your prefer not to incur capital gains tax.

ST. PETER AND PAUL SOUP KITCHEN The volunteers for St. Peter and Paul served 109 diners on Octo-
ber 3rd. We used 18 cooks, 12 to provide side items and 11 to
serve the meal and provide dessert. The diners love our food and
our volunteers serve it with a lot of joy. We all feel blessed to be
able to help out in this way. Special thanks to our 2 substitute
cooks this month, Kathy Paese and Elizabeth Connole. They
cooked for 2 absent cooks.
Another “shout out” to Nikki Mahn, who provided a needed side
item with short notice. It really does take a village to feed the
hungry, and St. Peter parish is very generous to those who can’t
provide for themselves.
We collect new and gently used blankets for the men’s shelter in
Soulard, so please if you are able, drop off any donations at 311
Weston Oaks Court and we will take them down with us on No-
vember 3. If you want to get involved and help out in another
way, please contact Mary Raizman at [email protected], or
at 314 458-6895.
The Welcoming Committee would like to announce the
“New Arrivals to our Parish Family” for September 2013.
Let us remember them in our prayers and aid them in catching
that great St. Peter Spirit we all know and love.
