Obedience to God
Man is a social being. With this reality man wants to belong to a group or community and because of this, people do not oppose the
prevailing standards of our society even if is directly opposing the law, like for example thou shall not kill.
In a barbershop, a man said, “I don’t believe in God.” The barber asked, “Why did you say that?” the man answered, “If God is real,
why are there many bad people?” The barber looked out the window, and said, “I also don’t believe that soap is real. If it is, why do I
see many dirty people like that homeless man on the street?” The man responded, “Well, it is because they do not wash themselves
using soap.” “That’s precisely my point,” the barber said. “There are many bad people, not because God is not real, but because they
ignore God and disregard His teachings”.
Our world is in disarray because people do not obey God’s teachings. Obedience to God is the key to lasting peace and real
prosperity. What is needed is only to follow God, even though it may be contrary to popular opinion like what people are doing now
by putting a question mark to where God has put a period (Joel Osteen). (continued on the back cover)

Dear Pastors and Parishioners,
RE: Development and Peace
I write to update you that the 2018 Share Lent funds were sent to development and Peace this past November, as I received a letter from its Executive Director, Mr. Serge Langlois, reaffirming Development and Peace’s commitment to continue working with the Bishops of Canada on the ongoing concerns with its partners, and also confirming that a moratorium has been place on funding for the partners in question until all the issues have been clarified.
Accordingly, I am happy to reaffirm my commitment to Development and Peace, and I ask you to continue your support of Development and Peace, especially the upcoming 2019 Share Lent campaign, Share the Journey. Please visit http://www.devp.org/en/sharelent2019/materials for more information.
God has abundantly blessed us. May we generously share that abundance with all of our brothers and sisters in need, especially the migrants and refugees. God bless you.
Sincerely in Christ our Lord,
Gregory J Bittman
Bishop of Nelson

(continued from front cover) Today people tend to question the teachings of the Catholic Church rather than putting it into
action. Killing might solve the problem but destroys the sanctity of life. Homosexuality and lesbianism disregards the
sexuality of human beings as men and women. The distressing result of divorce is that it kills family. 85% of Catholics
practice contraception and sterilization is most popular form of birth control today, shows disregard to God’s teachings.
Modern people have forgotten that objective truth and rectitude do not depend on opinion but are based on immutable
divine principles. St. Paul warns, “For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine but, following their own desires and
insatiable curiosity, will accumulate teachers and will stop listening to the truth and will be diverted to myths”(2 Tim 4:3-4). This is our
world today!
But Jesus is different. He was not afraid to go against the tide of public opinion. He did not seek the approval of the majority
and admiration of the people but rather was intent on following the will of his Heavenly Father even if meant being,
ridiculed, to the point of crucifixion on the cross. But Jesus reminded us through Peter, “Do not be afraid”, because with Him
we may all have the courage to proclaim the truth of His teaching with firm conviction, boldness and courage so that people
may once again have a dynamic and living faith that leads to the fullness of life. With Jesus, active obedience to His teaching
is possible! “Come follow me, says the Lord, and I will make you fishers of people”. (Matthew 4.19) Amen. ~ Fr. Neil
