Just Follow Jesus
Saints and Holy people give God credit for having such a plot in their lives as writers do in their books and movies. Whenever we watch a thriller, we are not disturbed or upset if everything seems to be going against the hero in the first half of the story. We know beforehand that it is all going to turn out alright in the end. The more problems in the story, the more hindrances and suffering, the better the plot is. And, in the end, it all does get solved. God has as much talent as any writer of hair-raising stories. He knows exactly what He is doing in our lives. He knows exactly why He does things. They all have a good purpose.

The entire life of Jesus, from his birth to his death on the cross, is according to the overall plan of God for the salvation of the world. The Gospel this Sunday, Jesus is “resolutely determined to
journey to Jerusalem” (v.51). He goes to Jerusalem not a tourist or visitor. He is going there to accomplish the plan of God the Father. It is there that he will undergo sufferings and death and offer his life for the salvation of all. His obedience to the heavenly Father is absolute and immutable. No one can change His decision to follow His Father’s will, not the hostility of the Samaritans nor the objections of Peter and the pleadings of His disciples.
The call and the cost of Christian commitment are heavily emphasised in this Gospel where the life of discipleship and its qualities are laid before us. There is nothing about being a follower of Jesus that does not demand effort. As all existing responsibilities have to take second place. Jesus is only fair when He makes it clear in very direct speech what is expected if those who wish to join His group. If we want to accompany Jesus we must know what we are doing and be aware of the harsh realities of life. The message is clear- if anything at all stands in our way or takes priority in our lives, then we are free to follow Him.
God’s plan for us goes infinitely beyond our own and retirement plans. He wants us to be with Him in heaven for we are His children as revealed by Jesus: “For this is the will of my Father, that
everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him (on) the last
day” (Jn 6:40). We are citizens of heaven (Phil.3:20), but become full-fledged citizens of heaven only if we follow Jesus all the way, with no if’s and but’s and absolutely no turning back!
The Lord’s call requires an immediate response and is not just something to be fitted in after we have attended liturgies nor celebrations like maintaining our status, popularity or fulfilling all the other goals we set ourselves. Whatever invitation comes our way, our reply should always be: “You are my God. it is you who are my portion”. Amen. – Fr. Neil
