CATASTROPHE AT

CHERNOBYL

CHERNOBYL NEUCLEAR DISASTER

Occurred on 26 April 1986 at Chernobyl

Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine.

An explosion and fire released large

quantities of radioactive contamination into the

atmosphere ,which spread over much of Western USSR and

Europe.

Causes Operator error initially faulted

The operator error was probably due to their lack of knowledge of nuclear physics and engineering, as

well as lack of experience and training. Operating instructions and design deficiencies found There actor had a dangerously large positive void coefficient. The void coefficient is a measurement of

how are actor responds to in creased steam formation in the water coolant.

A more significant flaw was in the design of the control rods that are inserted into there actor to slow

down there action. Other deficiencies besides these were not

edinreactor design , as were its non-compliance with accepted standards and with the requirements of

nuclear reactor safety.

Impact on People Economic impact Removal of radiation affected agricultural and forest

land from production. Hugh amount of money in Belarus and Ukraine used

for Chernobyl related benefits. Agricultural production costs have increased due to the

need for special cultivation techniques , fertilizers and

additives.

What happenedSATURDAY APRIL

26,1986Reactor #4 was undergoing a test to test the backup power supply in

case of power lossThe power fell to low allowing the concentration of xenon 135 to riseThe workers continued the test and in order to control the rising levels of xenon 135,the controlled

rods were pulled out.

The Reactor after the ExplosionAfter the explosion ,

most of the plant is still standing . Some might think from this picture that the disaster wasn’t all that bad, but what makes the Chernobyl disaster the worst in history is the sheer

volume of radio active materials that where spewed across the

European continent .

Aftermath

Only 30 people died due to the accident at Chernobyl, with 2 of those 30 dying because of the foremost explosions. The accident released tons of toxic into the environment, which spread all over EUROPE.The event gained much negative media attention and was much dramatized to represent countless mutations due to the accident, although this is far from the truth.
