Burial mounds are ubiquitous throughout North-Western Europe. In some regions dense concentrations of monuments form peculiar configu-rations such as long alignments while in others they are spread out ex-tensively, dotting vast areas with hundreds of mounds. These vast barrow landscapes came about through thousands of years of additions by several successive prehistoric and historic communities. This book is about how these landscapes developed and came about.

The papers in this volume offer studies on subsistence and surplus production with a wide geographical perspective. The research areas vary considerably, ranging from the American Mid-South to Turkey. The range in time periods is just as wide, from c. 7000 BC to the 16th century AD.

Sidestone Press | Format: 210x265mm

Paperback | 516 pp. | Language: English |

91 illus. (bw) | 239 illus. (fc)

The Schipluiden site is a unique document for a crucial phase in the neolithisation process of the Lower Rhine Area. The rescue excavation profited from available funding for a full recovery of the site by a large multidisciplinary team. The waterlogged condition of the site meant a wealth of preserved organic remains: spectacular wooden equipment, like paddles and axe hafts and even some fragments of woven fabric. Bones of mammals, birds and fish, molluscs, diatoms and insects, pollen and botanical macroremains inform us in detail on the Neolithic landscape and subsistence.

Ancestral Heaths Reconstructing the Barrow Landscape in the Central and Southern Netherlands

Marieke Doorenbosch | 2013

Sidestone Press Dissertations | Format:

210x297mm Paperback | 280 pp. | Language:

English | 15 illus. (bw) | 100 illus. (fc)

Burial mounds are amongst the most important of Europe’s prehistoric monuments. In this book a detailed vegetation history of the landscape around burial mounds is presented. It is argued in this book that bar-rows were built on existing heaths, which had been and continued to be maintained for many generations by so-called heath communities. These heaths, therefore, can be considered as ‘ancestral heaths’.

Paperback | 330 pp. | Language: English |

Mediterranean and West European pre-modern agriculture (agriculture before 1600) was by necessity ‘organic agriculture’. Crop protection is part and parcel of this agriculture, with weed control in the forefront. Three medieval agronomists are at the heart of this book, but historical developments in crop protection from early Punic, Greek, and Roman authors to the first modern author are outlined.

The Connected CaribbeanA socio-material network approach to patterns of homogeneity and diversity in the pre-colonial period

Angus A.A. Mol | 2014

€ 34,95 | ISBN: 9789088902598

Imprint: Sidestone Press Dissertations |

The modern-day Caribbean is a stunningly diverse but also intricately in-terconnected geo-cultural region, resulting partly from the islands’ shared colonial histories and an increasingly globalizing economy. Perhaps more importantly, before the encounter between the New and Old World took place, the indigenous societies and cultures of the pre-colonial Caribbean were already united in diversity. This work seeks to study the patterns of this pre-colonial homogeneity and diversity and uncover some of their underlying processes and dynamics.

But how far back can we trace such inter-action? Increasing evidence suggests considerable time-depth for Trans-Eurasian exchange, with the expanding urban networks of the Bronze Age at times anticipating later caravan routes.

But how far back can we trace such inter-action? Increasing evidence suggests considerable time-depth for Trans-Eurasian exchange, with the expanding urban networks of the Bronze Age at times anticipating later caravan routes.
