‘We have been using Sounds in Focus throughout our school for one year now. We chose it initially, as we sought a scheme that would combine the focus on phonemes and graphemes in the teaching of spellings. We also felt that this programme would bring a focus back to phonics in the senior classes. We used the books in a graded spelling approach from September, based on results scored in the Drumcondra Spelling Test from the previous May. We found the brainstorming session on the introduction of each sound to be beneficial for the children, whilst the downloadable games and activities acted as effective reinforcement.’
Heidi Jordan
TM
‘I really liked this programme and though I am not a big fan of workbooks, I found this one was particularly useful to assess where the child might be struggling. I really like the way it runs from Junior Infants up to 6th Class as a consistent approach to literacy will only benefit the pupils. I loved the resources that came with it online and they were used every day for literacy stations. The pupils worked very well with this approach with sounds, list and special words being remembered and used. The assessment tests will be ideal for my class towards the end of the year and for ongoing assessment in literacy lessons. If your school is using Jolly Phonics or a similar programme, then it might be an idea to take Sounds in Focus on, as it not only supplements but has the ability to take over from the Jolly Phonics programme which may not have enough for the average class teacher.’

WHY DOES NEW WAVE MENTAL MATHS APPEAL TO TEACHERS?A word from the author: Eddy Krajcar
‘When I started teaching in the early 1990s, I found that a large number of pupils lacked the skills and understanding of simple maths, like telling the time, basic table facts, money and simple strategies. Traditionally, these skills are taught and worked on once and then forgotten. I find that this places a tremendous strain on both teachers and pupils and is the main reason I’ve developed New Wave Mental Maths. The workbooks provide a way to reinforce taught concepts through repeated practice and lift the pupils’ overall maths results.’ Eddy Krajcar

PROVIDE A GREAT FOUNDATION FOR HANDWRITINGA word from our literacy expert: Debbie Hendriks
‘When I began teaching, handwriting was a priority and taught in all classrooms. However, in today’s crowded and demanding curriculum we’ve seen an understandable decline in the teaching of handwriting. Adding reduced handwriting opportunities, due in part to the dependency on technology, means that when pupils are asked to complete written tasks, they struggle, due to the lack of the required handwriting and cognitive skills.
Research has shown that explicit handwriting instruction and repetitive practice is essential for pupils to achieve automaticity and legibility; however, finding the time and appropriate resources has proved difficult for teachers.
New Wave Handwriting incorporates a structured, developmentally-sequenced whole-school handwriting programme with cross-curricular activities, developed specifically to meet the needs of pupils and teachers.’Debbie Hendriks

HELP DEVELOP NEAT, LEGIBLE HANDWRITING PREPARE PUPILS FOR LETTER FORMATION
Features:• cursive style increases speed, fluency and spelling accuracy• research shows that cursive handwriting discourages reversal and transposition of letters and is also the recommended style for dyslexia• groups individual letters into ‘families’ based on direction of formation, to aid teaching and learning• can be used in conjunction with My Spelling Workbook where pupils can practise the words in cursive style to encourage pattern retention once they have mastered individual letter formation• ensures that schools have a whole-school approach to handwriting in terms of letter shapes, height and starting and ending positions, so pupils encounter the same style year after year
New Wave Pre-writing Patterns prepares pupils for letter formation and aids the smooth transition to writing alphabet letters. Written by occupational therapists, this simple activity book presents a systematic and fun approach for teaching the foundation skills that are essential for pupils to learn the pre-writing patterns used to make pictures and then combined to make letters and numbers.
