Praise for I stole the rain:

“Stories full of a touching humanity, of people that live a life of expedients and dreams in the suburban alleyways of southern Italy. The language of this writer is mellow and full of local flavour. Highly imaginative, and with clearly defined characters to whom we effortlessly become attached”. michela murgia

“An old tale, yet at the same time fresh, lyrical and immediate. Here is an author to be kept in our sights”. valeria parrella

A fresco of the superstitious Italian province of Campania; stories of people who live among bottles of fizzy drinks, with tin trophies from local tournaments, and sell gold from their homes. Protect us, everywhereOvunque, proteggici

Fifty year-old Lorenzo Girosa receives a letter out of the blue. Someone knows his secret – a crime committed as a budding adolescent. The letter brings back stories of his family and Villa Girosa, the house they lived in: spacious but blighted by the absence of children. Pride of place is occupied by brothers Ettore and Domenico. These two very different siblings are further separated by Domenico’s emigration to America. His short life is marked by illegality, and his orphaned son, Nicola, is sent to Italy, where he arrives as a foreigner in Villa Girosa. Uncouth and ill mannered, Nicola has a hard time to make ends meet wandering around with his humble magic shows. The victim of his incapacity is his son Lorenzo, who spends his childhood wishing he were an orphan. When his wish comes true, during an earthquake, he is filled with guilt. The car that brings him to Villa Girosa has a magnet that reads: “Protect us, everywhere”. Years later the past comes knocking at his door to be remembered and to find protection at last. Who wrote the letter? What is there to discover?

Elisa Ruotolo (Santa Maria a Vico, 1975) has published short stories. Her first book published by nottetempo (2010) was Ho rubato la pioggia.

Excuse my dust (2011)

Coscienza is left a widow at forty-five. Her husband dies in a car accident. Along with the mourning the suspicion that the woman in the car with him was not simply a golf companion... Comforting Coscienza are her best friends: Alice, a dog counselor, and Mia, a successful caterer. Their normally mad world is told with mild but optimistic cynicism. A brilliant comedy of misunderstandings.

The end of the worldbut oneLa penultima fine del mondo

In a small village on the island, with its river, parish priest and open air cafés, a man suddenly throws himself off a terrace with a smile on his face. He is followed by a woman, a man and numerous other people; men and women of all ages all without any apparent reason. They do not so much take their lives as exit from life itself, smiling. Why do they do it? The enquiry takes all kind of turns, from a poisoned environment to satanic forces. The village attracts the attention of the international press as well as a metaphysical interest where all is real, yet unexplainable. A descent into the underworld in a kind of modern apocalypse with a surprise ending.

Elvira Seminara is a journalist living in Acicastello. Her novel Scusate la polvere was published by nottetempo in 2011.

Carla Vasio

Private life of a cultureVita privata di una cultura

Carla Vasio places us directly among the protagonists of the new cultural scene of the second half of the 20th century, and the winds of change that animated it. Writers and poets of Gruppo 63, the experimental literary movement that had a deep impact on Italian literature from the Sixties on and now celebrating its 50th anniversary; musicians of Nuova Consonanza, with the unforgettable voices of Michiko Hirayama and Cathy Berberian; from the discovery of Oriental wisdom and Krishnamurti to the Jungian school of Ernst Bernhard; from the young Formal painters to Kounellis, Schifano and Turcato; from the theatre of Lele Luzzatti to the new art galleries right up to the Biennales. Vasio recalls with humour and intimate knowledge encounters and conversations; as we are drawn in to homes, studios, printers’ workshops and art galleries we are given a rare chance to savour the sense of adventure that characterized the times. A live portrait of an Italy open to the world of art, and of an art whose language is daring, lively and experimental.

Carla Vasio, writer and poetess, was the only woman in Gruppo 63. She ran the famous bookshop Libreria dell’Oca in Rome between 1967 and 1972.

Alexandra Censi

The laughter of monstersLa risata dei mostri

Various types of monster live on earth. Some you can see in the queue at the supermarket or at the Post Office or cash machine, all lined up like china statuettes. The main character, “with hair thick as rope”, a psychoanalyst father and housewife mother, seems equally lifeless; a statue watching an adored father as he whips her mother on all fours with a cat o’ nine tails. La risata dei mostri (Laughter of monsters) is a novel about a woman who moves through childhood and adolescence to adulthood, passing through the fire of her parents’ love to the ash of the many cigarettes smoked with her boyfriend, and on to the embers of a marriage spiced up by real meetings with virtual friends.Shifting the point of view from eye level to that of desire, Alexandra Censi describes how, unlike monsters, humans do not stand in line, but how in their disorderliness, of sex, falling in love and pain, they are able to experience feelings inaccessible to all other species, real or imagined.

Alexandra Censi (Gyula, Hungary, 1990) lives in Rome, where she studies Literature at the University of Roma Tre. She is writing her dissertation on Decadentism in Pier Paolo Pasolini. La risata dei mostri is her first novel.

Ciangiz is an aging Iranian director imprisoned for having written a screenplay considered pro-Zionist because the main character is Jewish. In actual fact his intention had been simply to make a French-style film noir. His passion for the cinema causes him to see in his chain-smoking wife, Ozra, the great French actress Simone Signoret. The fervid imagination unleashed by his imprisonment enables him to complete the film, set in his childhood on the eve of the Iranian revolution. His day is thus spent on two parallel tracks – in the closed environment of his cell and the open one of his film – where three young people love, hide and spy on one another in the lead up to a dramatic finale. Ciangiz switches continuously between the world of small-time, unfortunate director to the glory of a great film in the best Iranian-French tradition.

Bijan Zarmandili was born in Teheran. He is a journalist specialised in Middle East’s Politics. His recent publications include: La grande casa di Minirrieh, L’estate è crudele (Feltrinelli, 2004 and 2007) and I demoni del deserto (nottetempo, 2011).

The tree and the cowL’albero e la vacca

L’albero e la vacca, the latest novel by Adrián N. Bravi, tells the story of Adamo, who watches his parents’ separation from up in a tree. Perched on the branch of the yew after eating its very poisonous berries, Adamo sees a placid cow appear before his eyes. This vision protects him from the discovery that adults are made of different stuff to children, and can imagine separations, divisions and neglect that children would never dream of. The berries from the public gardens of Recanati turn Adamo into a seer who tells others that nothing is really true. In his comic and visionary prose, Adrián N. Bravi turns everyday occurrences into a fantastic adventure, and the opposite sometimes as well.

Adrián N. Bravi (1963) was born in San Fernando, Buenos Aires, and lives in Italy, where he works as a librarian. His latest novels all published by nottetempo are La pelusa (2007), Sud 1982 (2008) and Il riporto (2010).

Poor heart of a womanPovero cuor di donna

Rome, July 1947. On the Appian Way a small girl finds the brutalized body of a young woman. Forty-year-old detective Achille De Santis is put on the case. Set in a poor and hungry post-war Rome, the investigation leads unexpectedly to an illegal expatriation organization. Although fictional, the story reveals a surprising criminal connection existing at the time between Italy and Argentina. This dramatic story is told with a mixture of languages and dialects, hidden and stolen identities and characters whose strength is drawn from the pain of powerful sentiment.

Paola Campanini lives in Rome. She is a puppeteer, actress and expert on figure theatre.

Pilate and JesusPilato e Gesú

Who is Pontius Pilate, the Prefect of Judaea before whom the trial of Jesus Christ took place and which ended in his crucifixion? A cruel and ruthless tyrant or a fearful and faltering official who allows himself to be persuaded by the Sanhedrin to convict a man he deems to be innocent? An irrational and insignificant figure or, as Nietzsche suggests, “the only figure in the New Testament to be worthy of respect”? An easy-going, humorous imposter that deals out memorable lines (“What is truth?”, “Ecce Homo!”, “What I have written I have written”) or a severe theological figure without whom the drama of the Passion and Redemption could not have taken place?Restaging all the phases of the trial, Agamben offers us a new perspective. In the dialogue between Pilate and Jesus, two worlds and two kingdoms face one another: history and eternity, sacred and profane, judgement and salvation. And in this unsparing comparison Pilate’s role is decisive in every sense.

Sandro Veronesi, Concita De Gregorio, Barbara Alberti, Franca Valeri, Luciana Castellina, Vittorio Lingiardi, Giuseppina Torregrossa, Gabriella Caramore, Gianrico Carofiglio, Alfonso Berardinelli: ten intellectuals use literature, philosophy and their own personal experiences to discuss love, that incandescent subject no one has ever succeeded in handling rationally. From procrastination to falling out of love, through the iciest or most ardent stages of the most common of feelings, these lessons explore every aspect of the yearning for reciprocation and the suffering that often derives from it.Is there a difference between gay and heterosexual love? Between love and passion? How do people deal with jealousy and betrayal? How do they handle separation? How long can people last out before they confess? Love lessons is the result of a series of highly popular encounters held at Teatro Tor di Nona in Rome in 2012.

Walter Siti

Realism is the impossibleIl realismo è l’impossibile

The book does not deal with realism as a literary ideology but as a means of deception. It looks at those effects of reality that allow the written word to deceive you into believing that what is said is true – an illusion essential to the rhetorical and psychological mechanism known as identification. The illusory and contradictory nature of the procedure is not lost: reality is shapeless and impredicable while realism is a shape – therefore at a certain point it is forced to deny itself. The author examines the anti-realistic and symbolic ambitions of Balzac and Zola, analyzing the two main streams of realism today: one that tends towards the archetype and the myth (with the danger of settling for the stereotype) and one that actually tries to take nascent reality by surprise.

Walter Siti (Modena 1947) author, critic and historian, is also one of Italy’s foremost fiction writers. Among his several novels, Scuola di nudo (1994), Troppi paradisi (2006) and Resistere non serve a niente (2012), winner of the Strega Award 2013.

Feast timeEdited by Andrea CavallettiIl tempo della festa A cura di Andrea Cavalletti

A rare and brilliant figure with the ability to diversify from anthropology, mythology, philosophy and literary criticism, Furio Jesi was one of the great Italian masters of 20th century essay writing. The book comprises some of his masterpieces: the first time he defines his famous interpretation of the “mythological machine”, his reflections on feast time and mythological time, or his examination of the poetics of Rimbaud and Pavese. Alternatively, in a strongly autobiographical text, we are invited into and guided through the most secret and intriguing rooms of his personal workshop. Il tempo della festa is also a sort of manifesto of political and cultural resistance: in the sombre climate of modern-day Italy, Jesi’s intelligence proves to be both a weapon and an example of happiness.
