Connection -
What could you use to build a model castle?
William built a few stone castles
like the famous White Tower in London
These were called Square Keep Castles
What made this type of castle strong?
These were calledSquare Keep Castles
It had:-
•Strong thick walls
•Towers at the corners
•Battlements
•Narrow windows
•A first-floor doorway
In time, the Normans wanted to replace wooden castles with stone
Often, the motte was not strong enough for a stone tower,so they built a Shell Keep
but sometimes they just abandoned the motte and built a stone keep in the bailey.
Year 7 Castles project.
• You will have from now until the 15th Febuary to design and make your own Norman castle.
• You can work in groups – no more than three, or you can work on your own.
• Each person needs to have a role in the group.• This is the last lesson we will spend on castles,
so you need to make sure you are clear on the project set!
Year 7 Castles project.
• You may want to design a Motte and Bailey castle or a stone castle.
• BUT it has to be based on historical evidence. This means you will need to do some of your own research on the main parts of a Norman castle.
• Prizes will be rewarded for the best. You will be marked on presentation AND historical accuracy.
• 15th February 2013
Year 7 Castle Project.
1) Choose your groups.2) Brainstorm your ideas – type of castles,
items you will need, who will do what, what research you are going to do.
3) Start your design on A3 paper, for me to check before you leave!
Cross the Curriculum
How does today’s learning link to three other subjects?
How can you use what you have learnt today in other subjects?
What skills can you take from today and use elsewhere in school?
How would you encounter the same topic differently in other subjects? (e.g. environment)
