The donation which youhave provided is of critical importance in encouraging participation in highereducation. Your continued generous support of this fund significantly enhances ourability to offer outstanding educational opportunities for deserving students.

Again, thank you for your investment in student success at Sul Ross. Yourcommitment is greatly appreciated by the entire university community in providingthe needed resources to help students’ dreams become reality. My best wishes toyou.

R. Vic MorganPresident, Sul Ross State University

Let’s get back to our discussion of the CASIrules. This month, I’m pondering an area of the rulesand procedures that prompts too frequent challengesfor the Rules Committee. Let’s begin by posing thisquestion:

You are the referee at a cookoff. Awards areover and the cookoff promoter’s recorder asks you tosign the Results Sheet. They tell you they need tomake copies and cut a check on Monday and will send

the Results to the CASI TallyMaster. How do you respond?Okay, do you have an answer in mind? Here’s what the rules say: “The

designated CASI official must sign the results sheet before it is submitted to CASIfor cookoff sanctioning. The designated CASI official and/or the CASI RegionalReferee will send the Results Sheet to CASI.”

I don’t really know how often referees leave the paperwork with promoters, but I do know that we are forced to deal with too many problem cookoffs as a resultof this action. We have experienced cookoff results that have been many monthsoverdue and others that were just plain old lost by the promoter.

Folks, these are your hard-earned points! We want to protect them. Wewant every cook to receive every point they earn in a timely manner and this hingeson the good efforts of the cookoff referee.

To avoid problems, I believe the CASI referee should contact the promoterahead of time. We understand they have many things on their minds as we prepareto host the cookoff. We need to help them focus on our needs. Let them know howmany copies we need of each form; let them know how many tables and chairs willbe needed; remind them to be prepared to write a check on the day of the event.

When the referee makes copies of the form to send to their RegionalReferee, they can make a copy for the promoter, too. A good referee promotesCASI by helping the promoter have a successful cookoff for the cooks. That’swhat I’ve been pondering. What do you think?

On another note, a major upgrade to the CASI website is underway. Withthe assistance of Jim Stateczny, we have a beautiful new image and streamlinednavigation. Come have a look at chili.org. Improvements are ongoing, so be sureto check back from time to time.

This is the season of big cookoffs. I hope to see y’all and spend some timevisiting.

ED PonderingsTICC XLThe winter board meeting and workshop are

now recent history. Directors wore plaid shirts andspent 9 hours on Saturday, January 28, analyzing whatmakes CASI tick. In the morning session, specialattention was paid to CASI’s corporate structure,Director responsibilities, and careful scrutiny of thefinancial statements. The afternoon session looked atTICC progress, problems, and solutions. TICCassignments were delegated and discussed.

I believe I can speak for the entire Board instating this was a much needed look at who we are and what we do. We could havespent many more hours in valuable discussion.

Sunday morning brought an efficient and abbreviated Board Meeting withapproval of actions stemming from the workshop. A study of preliminary constructionestimates and site location was ordered. The Minutes will be out soon, and Iencourage all Great Peppers to share them with the members.

I thank the Directors for their conscientious effort to make this term asuccess. There is no doubt that we are all dedicated to making CASI the best thatit can be. Many themes were developed that you will hear throughout the year. Aneducated and informed Board of Directors can better convey its actions to themembership and do the business that is the Chili Appreciation Society.

TICC XL - Build on the heritage, celebrate your friendship, and spread theword on chili. Contact me with any thoughts you may have. I have enjoyed thefeedback I have received from many of you who chose to respond.

Calling All Pods!Thinking About Hosting a Great Peppers’ Meeting?

As you may be aware, no Pod has submitted a proposal to host the2007 Great Peppers’ Meeting to be held September 7-8, 2007. The clock isticking and plans need to be made for this important meeting. Hosting the Great Peppers’ Meeting does not need to be seen as adaunting task. Some pods may worry that they don’t have enough membersor enough funding to organize the meeting. They may be concerned aboutliving up to or exceeding the activities of past meetings. There is nothing to fear. The Great Peppers Meeting is just that – ameeting! Its purpose is for the Great Peppers to come together in workshopsand clinics (on Friday) and the business meeting on Saturday. It does not haveto be a social event costing thousands of dollars to produce. The basicrequirements for the meeting are quite simple and the available CASI fundingis substantial. Time is of the essence for planning to begin on 2007 and subsequentmeetings. We don’t want the Great Peppers to be forced to choose a site for2007 at their meeting in September and leave the host with a very shortcalendar to complete their arrangements. Executive Director Alan Dean has information relative to hosting aGreat Peppers’ Meeting that serves as a template and road map for success. If any Pod or group of Pods is interested in hosting the 2007 event, pleasecontact Alan immediately.

CASI Seeks Funds to Purchase AEDs

In the time it takes you to read this article, sudden cardiac arrest willhave claimed another victim. In the past year, 220,000 Americans died ofsudden cardiac arrest: nearly one death every two minutes. A quarter of thesedeaths could have been prevented if someone had initiated the Cardiac Chainof Survival, and an automated external defibrillator (AED) had beenavailable for immediate use at the time of the emergency.

In an effort to provide additional equipment for use at the Ranch, CASIis seeking funding to purchase two (2) AEDs. This equipment could be usedin the event the paramedics were not on site at the time of need.

AEDs are easy-to-use and portable. They deliver a potentiallylifesaving electric shock to the heart, which can restore a heart’s normal rhythmin the event of sudden cardiac arrest. Audible, and visual instructions clearlyand simply show how to operate the unit. If we are able to purchase these units, training will be provided on-site during TICC to those who wish to learn.

We are currently seeking grant funds for these purchases; however thelikelihood of receiving such is slim. The approximate cost of each unit is$1,300.00. If you or your Pod would be interested in donating to this fund, pleasecontact Renee Moore at [email protected].

FACT: The average survival rate for sudden cardiac arrest is about 5percent. With an AED that can increase to more than 40 percent.

PIONEER RV RESORTS, INC.www.pioneerresorts.com

This month’s corporate sponsor has three RVparks, and a 4th opening later this year, in diverse locations. Spend some time onthe beach at Pioneer RV Resort in Port Aransas, Texas, or at the 17-acre PioneerBay RV Resort, complete with a marina, in Palacios, Texas. You can even spendsome time in the Cowboy Capitol of Texas at Pioneer River Resort in Bandera,Texas; this park is hosting a CASI Chili Cookoff on March 4.

Want to cool off from the hot summer or do some skiing in the winter? ThenPioneer Mountain Resort in Ruidoso, New Mexico, will fill that bill for you whenit opens later this year.

All these parks have full hook-up sites, cable TV, internet available in thepark, and much more. Pioneer Bay Resort and Pioneer River Resort acceptPASSPORT AMERICA 50% OFF discount (Passport America is also a corporatemember). Visit their web site for complete information on all their parks and whenyou visit one of them, tell them you’re a CASI member and you appreciate theirsupport.

The subject of this month’s TallyWhackersis one near and dear to me – paperwork problems. Iam happy to report that we do not have a lot ofproblem paperwork, but when we do, it causes extrawork, and delays processing the cookoff results. Thistranslates into delays crediting the cooks and showteams with the points they have earned.

The problems encountered with paperworkare quite varied. They can range from the severe; no

cookoff identification or referee signature (which will get the forms returned), tothe inconvenience of a missing address or misspelled show team name. During thenext month or two I will be tracking the paperwork problems I receive and reportthem to you.

One thing that is consistent is that problems are more likely to occur whenthe paperwork is left for the cookoff promoter to submit. CASI rules are quite clearthat submitting the cookoff’s results are the responsibility of the cookoff referee. When you leave a cookoff site without the Results Sheet, Entrants List, andsanctioning fees, you have lost control. The cookoff referee is responsible for thepaperwork’s accuracy which is very difficult to do if he doesn’t have it in his or herpossession.

The cookoff Referee has a lot of responsibility and is one of the mostimportant jobs in CASI. The cookoff participants depend on him/her to make surethe cookoff is conducted according to CASI Rules and to get the paperwork to theTallyMaster quickly and accurately.

Many companies have safety campaigns to eliminate lost-time accidents.Let’s practice “perfect paperwork” to eliminate paperwork errors. You can do it.Before putting the forms in the envelope, take a minute and look them over. Makesure all the required information is there. As always if there is a reason somethingmight be missing, please let me know by including a note or an advance call. It cango a long way in derailing potential problems.

NOBODY TOLD MEWho is that guy that used to be on the home

page of the CASI web page? His picture still showsup on the page covering upcoming cookoffs, butnobody told me anything about him.

Well, his name is Tex Schofield and he wasthe first man to act as Master of Ceremonies at theTICC results announcements. That’s when he becameknown, to some at least, as the “Mouth of Chili”; buthe always pronounced it “chil-eye.” His period in the

limelight was in the early 70’s and 80’s. He started most of the traditions of thestage. That’s probably why it is called the “Tex Schofield Stage.”

Like most of us, Tex had friends and enemies, but nobody can deny that hewas a Texas-sized promoter of chili and fun.

Talk to those who remember him, like Dee Hay, and you hear things like“I just liked to hear him talk.” Of course, Tex Schofield was the guy who namedDee’s chili team as “Ant Bed Chili.” Apparently she liked the name, because shestill uses it. I guess one could find some similarities between the fiery bite of a redant and the fiery bite of a good bowl of red chili, but one can find similarities betweenjust about anything if you try hard enough.

Tex had a real sense of humor and a nickname for everyone he ever met.I am told that he had a standard formula for his nicknames. Most, if not all of them, started with some variation of double-something-or-other and ended with somevariation of EYE. Perhaps I would have been known as something like “Double-D-Dowd-Eye”; but then, maybe not.

Tex also had a flair for dressing in the gaudiest clothing to be seen at anycookoff. There is a rumor that he dressed more conservatively while in his non-chili world, but that’s pretty normal.

Tex was a very jolly man. He was very unusual, very hard to describe, sothey simply say that “he liked to have fun.” He almost always wore a smile, evenwhen he didn’t win.

Notwithstanding his devotion to humor, he still found time to help found theHouston Pod. Given his heretofore mentioned penchant for exotic nicknames, it’shard to believe that he was responsible for the name of the Houston Pod.

Rumor has it that he never found time to cook chili, except maybe in theearly days of CASI. Maybe he was simply afraid that he would have to announcehimself as the winner. Had that happened, Tex might have found himselfspeechless and no one ever new that to happen. Tex was never short of words.

He was well known for his story-telling, particularly around the campfireafter a hard day. He played the guitar and sang a few songs. That’s a procedurewidely revered in his native Texas, where it is known as “pickin’ and grinnin’.”

Pickin’ and grinnin’ around the campfire is definitely a lot of fun, particularly after attending one of Tex’s “Tequila Seminars.” Tex had a veryspecial way of drinking tequila, which he was very happy to teach to others. Hewas a strict taskmaster, insisting that everyone follow his directions completely, andkept his students practicing until they got it right, sometimes until the wee hours ofthe morning!

After snooping into the life and times of Tex Schofield, I concluded that hewas a fairly typical chili aficionado. He seemed to always be willing to have fun, always ready to smile, always ready to tell a story. Not a bad life, is it?

Tex Schofield is no longer with us, at least not physically, but he lives on inthe memory of many chiliheads; his legacy will be with us for a long, long time.

These are the folks who invented this event, but we also need torecognize: Black Gold Pod for the fish fry Friday night; the museum ladies whoprovided breakfast for everyone on Saturday morning; the judging team of RalphHay and daughter, Dana, Laura Coad and Darrell Hopper; Boomer Kingston forthe overall coverage of the cookoff; James Bauer for his wonderful homemadebeer batter biscuits and Dutch oven apple pie; Barbara Herrin for the beef stewon Saturday night; Ms. Mary and her husband from United General for theirsponsorship; and most importantly, the 68 out-of-town cooks who drove to Rankin,Texas, to support the cookoff. A good time was had by all.

If I missed you, just show up at Men’s State next month and I’ll treat youto some country home fried fish with all the trimmings; sorry, beer not included.Dave Boone and I just might have a bottle of sotol out behind the barn if you decideon something a little bit remorseful. You might even confess to things you haven’tdone yet.

It appears that everyone is on the road in pursuit of those coveted points. If you go to the right places, I prefer to call it market research. Hey, I wouldn’t bein the chili world today if I hadn’t stopped in Terlingua one day to see what in theworld all those campers were doing parked together. One guy actually admittedthat he was cooking chili! Imagine that.

Remember, folks, we’re all having fun and the charities are making moneyoff of our entertainment. Yo, Rita.

Well, folks, gotta go, as I’m out of Ingles

Occasionally our organization has problems with Upcomings Listings. Themajority of these problems result from people waiting until the deadline tosubmit their information. Please don’t wait until the 15th of any month to send in your upcoming cookoffevents. Upcoming events can be sent to me months ahead, but send them inearly in the month.. If you wait until the 15th to email your event, and I don’treceive it, it could cause your event to not be advertised at all and thereforenot be sanctioned, or to be put on advertising probation if it doesn’t meet the30 day advertising requirement. Even if you don’t have all of your informationgathered, send in your ad for your event giving me the date, location, and nameof the event, that way you will be protected. It will be considered as advertised. You can send the details, and make changes or additions later.

An incident occurred recently, where someone waited until November 15th tosend in an event for December 31st. I did not receive this email, and the persondidn’t tell me about it until November 23rd. By then it was too late to beadvertised in the December issue of the Trails. There was nothing I could doto help him. This event could not be sanctioned. This is just one example ofwhat could happen if you wait until the 15th to advertise your cookoff.

Another reason for failing to have your event listed is some of you are stillusing my old email address, which changed last May. All emails concerningupcoming events that I receive are acknowledged by a return email to you. Ifyou do not receive a confirmation via email after you have sent in an upcomingevent, please get in touch with me immediately by phone, toll free at 1-888-227-4468. If you wait until the 15th of the month to send me your upcoming cookofflisting, it leaves no time for you to get in touch with me if you don’t receive aconfirmation email in return. Please send in your events early in the month. Some folks out there are still sending their upcoming listing to Myrl Coultas,Johnye Harriman, Bucky Seelig, Jim Stateczny, Alan Dean and Ken Rodd.PLEASE send you listings to my attention at [email protected]. Thissuggestion is for your benefit. I thank you all, and am here to help you.

North Texas Area Pods Work TogetherTo Benefit Hella Shrine Temple

North Texas….It has been said that it would be a cold day in hell before theNorth Texas Area pods would agree on anything. True enough, to some extent therehas been a bit of friction among a few pods, not unlike too many family members livingin the same house. Couple that with the naturally competitive nature of the chili cooksin the area, and sparks could fly now and then. But the temperature has cooled.

This past fall, several Great Peppers got together to discuss how the area podscould come together in the common purpose of cooking chili for charity, and in sodoing build a closer relationship among the pods and their respective members.

It was suggested that the Hella Shrine Temple would not only be a worthygroup to benefit, but also had a wonderful, scenic site overlooking Lake Ray Hubbard, with plenty of parking and even 20 RV hookups already in place. This sounded goodto the group, but what should the cookoff be called?

“A Cold Day in Hella” seemed to be appropriate while poking a little fun atthe pods themselves. And thus, a new cookoff was established.

The first annual Cold Day in Hella cookoff will be a two-day affair, March18 & 19, benefiting the Hella Shrine Temple. The second day, on Sunday, will havean interesting twist. At registration, cooks will be asked to declare which pod theywish to represent. Then at announcements, the pod with the most cooks in the top 10will have $200 donated to the Hella Shrine Temple in their name. They will also claimcustody of a ‘traveling trophy’ for the next year.

For more information, see the cookoff listings under Upcoming Cookoffs.

Cook, Jim Luhn and the Motleys. It was during this gathering and aftermuch discussion and many beers, that a new pod was born, the third pod in CASI.The year was 1976.

Tom was chosen to become the Supreme Great Pepper and Jimmy was tobecome the original Pepper Popper. But this new pod needed a name. Since the podwould be serving the North Texas area with an emphasis on Ft.Worth, Cowtownwas a natural, and so it was named. It was also determined that a logo of some sortwas needed to reflect the identity of this new group of chiliheads and the pod’sgeographic origins. By this time the hour was growing late and many more libationshad been consumed, allowing the creativity of the group to flow. Lacking paper,Tom and Jimmy grabbed a marker and started sketching right on the top of Jimmy’stable. When finished, the ‘horned chili pepper’ still used today had been designedto the group’s satisfaction.

Soon after the ‘birth’ of the pod, an inauguration party was held. TheDecember 1976 issue of the Goat Gap Gazette reported, “Cowtown CASI,headquartered in Ft.Worth, got underway November 20 with installation of officersat “Tag” Taggart’s giant and modern flea market in Grand Prairie. Officersinstalled at a really great party were Tom Wayne, Great Pepper, Jimmy Moon,Pepper Popper, Karen Wayne, treasurer and Beth Moon secretary. Beth is thisyear’s Texas State Ladies Chili Champion.”

In attendance were many of the ‘chilibrities’ at the time from the Houstonand San Antonio areas, including Jack Lierbo (GP, Houston) and Yellow DogMarsh (GP, San Antonio). Tex Schofield was emcee. Chiligula, God of Chili, was

represented by Hal John Wimberly. It was fitting that mounted sets of steer hornswere awarded by the new pod to several dignitaries. The new officers of Cowtownwere sworn in with much fanfare, the sprinkling of chili powder and swearingalliegance to chili, and of course, cold beverages. The pod was off and running.

“A very large number of the out-of-town participants in the inauguralceremonies stayed overnight with the Wayne family at their palatial residence justwest of Ft.Worth. A body count at 6 a.m., Sunday, November 21, showed 24 on thefloor and two in bed. Children were not counted. Nor were dogs,” reported thearticle in the GGG.

From these early beginnings, the Cowtown Pod experienced growth inmembership and prominence within the chili world. Meetings were held at variousplaces including Trader’s Village, Ben E. Keith’s offices in downtown Fort Worth,Fuddruckers at Irving Mall, Top of Texas Restaurant in Irving, BJ Keefer’s in FortWorth, Logan’s Roadhouse off 820, even a Sports Bar on 157 in Euless before beingmoved to the Arlington Elk’s Lodge in 1998, where the pod continues to meet.

Several early Cowtown Pod members were active not only in promotingCowtown, but developing CASI also. Richard Knight, Cowtown Great Pepper in1979, was heavily involved, along with Ray King and Vann York, in turning CASIinto an organization that made Terlingua a qualifying event. They developed thebasic set of rules that still influence CASI today.

It was during one of these early ‘organizational’ meetings that Knightdesigned the CASI logo (world map inside the pepper) on a napkin in Paul Smith’skitchen during a discussion with Ray King and Frank Tolbert on how to take CASIfrom a Texas organization to an international organization. Talk about forwardthinking!

CASI Chili Pod Being Formed in Puerto Peñasco

A CASI Chili Pod is being formed in Puerto Pensaco, Mexico, withapproximately 35 members enrolled to date. Membership is $5.00 annually and allare welcome and encouraged to join. Contact David Garner at:[email protected].

Puerto Pensaco is the site of two cookoffs and great cooks’ parties everyyear in January, the weekend prior to Martin Luther King Day. On Saturday, thereis a CASI NO BEANS Chili Cookoff on Manny’s Beach and Sunday’s cookoff, held at the Baja Hotel & Cantina, is the NO BEANS CHILI GRIND Contest.

The events usually begin on Thursday with a Cooks Fish Fry on thebeach in front of Playa Miramar R.V. Park. Friday is registration (usually held inthe Playa Miramar R.V. Park Recreation Room) and Friday night is a Chili CooksMexican Buffet at Manny’s Beach Club.

Saturday set ups on the beach begins somewhere around 8:30 a.m. with acooks’ meeting at approximately 8:45 a.m. Cooking begins at 9:00 a.m. with turnin at 1:00 p.m. This is when the sampling for the public along with the judging starts.

Sunday’s Baja Hotel & Cantina Cookoff usually starts about 9 a.m. withturn in at noon, which is also when the judging and sampling for the public begins.Volunteers to judge are requested at both events.

Both events also have showmanship which can be anything from astationary show, which is a cook’s display area, to a full out show where the entrants

perform around the cookoff areas; they may include games, costumes and treatsbeing distributed.

There is plenty of FUN, SUN and PARTYING for all who attend. Alcoholis usually in abundant supply and demand. T-shirts commemorating the cookoffsare sold at each event.

Cooks are encouraged to make plenty of chili, or add beans JUST PRIORto the public sampling to make certain everyone whom comes to enjoy the activitieshave plenty of chili to sample.

REMEMBER: All proceeds from these annual events are donated to thePuerto Pensaco community.

If you wish to see more information about the Puerto Pensaco events, seethe CASI Official website: www.chili.org.

The Branding Iron TrophyIn the early years, the Cowtown cookoff trophy was pretty much at the

whim of the pod. At some point it was determined that a trophy reflecting the historyand heritage of ‘Cowtown’ would be more appropriate and thus the ‘branding iron’trophy concept was born, sometime around 1985-86, but not without its labor pains.

Originally, it was simply the branding iron mounted on a piece of board, theassembly of which had been held at Jim Hudgins’ home. During one of thesemanufacturing sessions, Budda thought it might be a great idea to actually heat thebranding iron and imprint the ‘brand’ on the board. In order to demonstrate this, heheated up a branding iron and proceeded to ‘brand’ a step on Jim’s back porch, which was constructed of wood. Jim’s wife, Melinda, came out of the house andwas not real pleased! But the ‘branding’ idea caught on, and in fact, the ‘stackeddouble C’ with the current year’s number inside the C, was for years registered withthe Texas Cattlemen’s Association as the official, state recognized brand ofCowtown CASI.

It was also determined that a simple board would not do justice to thebranding iron and something more suitable should be found. Around this time, somede-construction was taking place in the stockyards with many of the old, originallivestock pens being torn down. Several Cowtown members inquired as to whatwas to be done with the scrap lumber. They were informed that they could helpthemselves to the wood that had been pushed aside into a large pile. Which they did.But they also determined that this would not be nearly enough to last for years tocome.

Being the ‘free’ thinkers they were, and also having a perfectly good chainsaw with them, they went over to an area of still standing pens and proceeded tocut down entire sections of standing fence, which were promptly loaded on theirtrailer and hauled back to Manske’s warehouse for storage. Those involved in the‘Great Wood Heist’ were Budda Manske, Bruce Stewart, Dean Reynolds, KenRobbins and Dog Luhn. Over the years, the branding iron/original stockyard penlumber trophy has become one of the most unique, symbolic and highly desiredtrophies in the chili world. Continued Next Month

They started showing up on Thursday evening for the Sixth Annual Horned Toad Cook-off held in Rankin Texas. By Friday most of the participants were there and ready to compete. That evening, Dave Boone and Company prepared a wonderful catfish dinner for all. Afterall were fed, the men broke off into various areas to polish up on their game of 42 for thedomino tournament that would be held Saturday after the cook-off. As most probably know, the women have won this cook-off for the past five years. Most men, not paying muchattention to the women, didn’t make much of the women gathering in one end of the coveredpavilion. The women though were going through a ritual that perhaps was a takeoff fromthe Terlingua International Chili Championship cook-off, which coinincidently was won byMargaret Nadeau. Here they started to toast one another with Tequila Rose, the dreadeddrink that would cast a hex on the men folk. As the evening progressed, some of the womeneven got on a table and started to chant to the demons that once again they would prevailover the men. Unfortunately, the men didn’t give much thought to these weird happenings, chuckled at the foolish females, and continued to play 42.

Past Winner's of the Horned Toad Cookoff, seated and latest winner, RoxannaPatton, standing from left, Debbie Turner, Jean Barkley, Carolyn Seelig and NormaHomesley. Missing is Carol Kitchens.

Saturday morning started with a brisk temperature of 28 degrees. Once the sun came up, thetemperature did too, with the makings for a great day of competition. Women from the RankinMuseum were on hand to prepare breakfast for everyone. Looking back, I noticed that therewere only a token of three or four women at breakfast. And yes, breakfast had a funny twangto it. Could this have been an omen or a conspiracy? All present ate and then went abouttheir business.

The cook-off began and the men still had no clue. Give credit to the men though. Trying tofigure out what was going on, they sent two of their own (Keith Barkley and Wayne Turner)disguised as women into the crowd, to try to figure out what the women were doing thatthe men weren’t. Unbeknownst to the men, the women also had a counter spy (DebbieTurner, a previous winner) infiltrate the crowd and spread false cooking tips to the men.

After all the chilis were turned in, the judging began, with all local residents, recruited bynon other than Karen Bains, a local chili cook, to judge all of the entrants. The conspiracycontinues. The judging progressed though three rounds, since there were 68 chilies turnedin this day. The Talley team, comprised of Doc Kinnison, Keith Barkley, James Bauer, BuckySeelig and others, worked hard to make sure that everything was on the up and up. Afterall was said and done, the final results showed that there was a two way tie for first place.Barbara Herrin, head judge, and Connie Collier, referee, questioned if there should beanother round of judging to break the tie. The Talley team recommended that we should usethe Jim Statezcny Talley program tie breaker, since this was the way it was normally done.James Bauer stated that if he were tied with women, he would graciously give her first placesince Valentine’s Day was just around the corner.

At announcements, there were four men in the top ten, with first and second place tiedbetween Roxanna Patton and James Bauer. The Statezcny program broke the tie and onceagain gave it to Roxanna, leaving James sucking hind tit. There was much hissing and booingamongst the men, knowing that they had once again been had. Some woman commented,at least we let them smell it. Tim Collier shouted, we know what it smells like, let us win it.Later on, after all was said and done, Bucky and Tim were observed sitting in their whineychair, crying in their beer, and still declaring that they had good chili, but there were sorryjudges. (If you don’ know about the winey chair, ask Carolyn or Connie). After dinner thatevening, even George Jowers, in disgust with the happenings, decided to leave and go backto San Antonio that evening. Yes, reluctantly, he took Joyce with him. Other men weresaying things like, “Next year, there will only be 30 or so cooks, we men are boycotting thisone”.So this ends again with the women winning. Yes, Women 6, Men 0. Wait until nextyear. We shall overcome.

NEW nine hole par three course. One of our campers (lucky for us andthe golfers) was Ben Hogans former secretary and now works for theBen Hogan/Callaway Golf Tour Company. Her name is Sharon Rae.They were MOST generous with awards and therefore all of the entryfunds ($420) went to the VFD. Friday night we were treated to aspaghetti feed and followed to entertainment by ELVIS. He has beenhiding in South Dallas for many years. He is a real crowd pleaser and allthe CASI Chili Heads had a great time. Saturday morning began with afree sausage/pancake breakfast for the cooks. After the start time of9:00am we were entertained by a large community of OLD restoredtractors. The two oldest being both 1937 John Deere with a Model A anda Model B. After close to 20 arrived - they lined them up behind a firetruck and did a grand parade thru the park for all to enjoy. Events laterin the day following the chili judging was raffle drawing and auctions. Thecreator of the “One Armed Dove Hunt” (Jack Northrup of Olney) helpedraise a total of $4746.50. Of this figure the CASI contribution was$792.00 . YEHAA! THe VFD had spend $350 for the spaghetti dinnerso their net profit was $4396.50. A very appreciative VFD gladlyaccepted the money. I am sorry that I do not know exactly how manycooks their were that were CASI and how many were other visitors andcampers in the park. We love the CASI cooks. Some came from the Fort

Worth Pod also. We like to give them the keys to one of our park buildings so theycan “Rock On” Friday and Saturday nights when the rest of us are sleeping. Weare looking forward to next years (Third Annual CASI Chili Cook-Off to again beheld the LAST weekend in January 2007) Doris and Kevin at Mitchell RV Park andResort (940)798-4615 www.mitchellrvpark.com

Our goal is always to have fun with the CASI cooks, hope some non-CASI folkswill join in the fun with their own magic potion and just plan make some money forthe VFD’s in our community. This year was the Adell-Whitt VFD (Mitchell Parkand Resort’s neighbor to the south). Of course, they all have been running alldirections helping a very large rural community in the past many months. We startedour weekend fun on Jan. 27th with a two man scramble golf tournament on our

Margaret gets a chili reception fromThe SCOOTER Store

The SCOOTER Store has a reputation for doing everything big, and the companydidn’t live that down when it came to celebrating Margaret Nadeau, a MobilityConsultant who was named the 39th Terlingua International Chili Champion byCASI in early November.

In honor of Margaret’s chili heroics, The SCOOTER Store held its own chili cook-off in mid-December titled, “Heating Up The Holidays.” The SCOOTER Storeconverted a good part of its parking lot into a chili extravaganza, setting up about40 booths for contestants, and bringing in tons of cornbread and beverages for1,000. Employee-owners from every department vied for prizes that topped at$250. Every employee-owner in New Braunfels was released from work a fewhours early to sample the various chili recipes and celebrate Margaret’s heroics.

Before kicking off the competition, Margaret shared what an honor it was to benamed the 39th International Chili Champion.

“It was a truly amazing experience that I wish everyone could experience in theirlifetime,” says Margaret, a seasoned cook-off veteran of five years. “To competewith the best and win is just completely unexpected.”

Margaret, company founder and CEO Doug Harrison and President Mike Pfisterthen helped judge about 40 chili entries. After awarding first, second and thirdprizes, the judges decided to award special prizes for the most spirited entries andalso awarded every contestant with a $25 gift card for participating.

Margaret Nadeau, employee of The SCOOTER Store, receives a crown, chiliribbon and scepter (large ladle) for winning TICC from Mike Pfister, President(left) and Doug Harrison, CEO and company founder of The SCOOTER Store

Free Quarter Page Adto CASI Pods, State, Regional and

International OpensAs a CASI Pod you are required to put on a pod cookoff

once a year. To help you advertise your pod cookoff we alloweach pod to place one quarter page ad in the Terlingua Trails, each year, free of charge. This ad should run the month beforeyour cookoff occurs. Should you decide that you need an adlarger than a quarter page we will simply bill you for the differencein price. This ad should not be confused with the articleadvertising your cookoff in the "Cooking with CASI Calendar"section in the Terlingua Trails. That article will start to run as soonas you request your cookoff packet and will run until yourcookoff occurs.
