We had the pleasure of meeting the 1987 Oklahoma State Champion, Alice Ramseur; chili cooks from out-of-state, and new cooks who came out to compete along with many of our compadres. We all had the honor of cooking with Roger and Jackie Koltz from Virginia, what would be Jackie’s last cookoff, along with Jackie’s sister Debra Sullivan from Oklahoma City, a first time cook. Jackie was so proud of her for placing 2nd. As I write this message it is October 15, the cutoff date for the November Terlingua Trails. It ishard to get your creative juices flowing for the November issue. In this age of instant gratificationand communication, it is difficult to put out news that will be old before it hits your hands. Whenmost of you receive the print copy of this issue, the 47th Terlingua Champion will have been crownedand there will not be a word about it here. I guess I could go ahead and make a prediction andcongratulate them now. I am thinking of a number between 1 and the 320 odd cooks that will vie forthe title. I will be the first to let you know if I picked you. Speaking in advance, with absolutely noforesight, I congratulate you on your wonderful victory. It was a pleasure to have you on stage andspend thirty minutes taking publicity pictures with our great sponsors. I hope you fly your specialchampion flag and toast with some of the spirits coming your way. Next month we will publish yourpicture so have a big smile on your face. It is an experience you will never forget.

Another unusual thing about mid October is the build up toward the TICC event in Terlingua. I am fortunate to have acabin on the highway three miles from CASI. Right now, there are weeds and brush growing around all the buildings at the site. The spring rains have eroded the grounds and you cannot drive to Krazy Flats because Well Creek has flashed. There is astrange quiet and no smell of campfires in the air. No banners, signs or colorful beads are anywhere in sight. Are you telling methat in two short weeks, this magic event will kick off? Are there really thousands of people on their way here? There will beporta cans, trash dumpsters, security officers and banners waiting for the cooks and spectators. The grounds will be trimmed, the pavilions power washed, the erosion graded and the welcome mat will be out. Thousands of hours of work all over thecountry will culminate in this brief celebration of chili. Then, just as quickly as it appeared, this scene will revert to the desert. The ghosts of the past will resume their watch.

Join me in thanking the volunteers that work this magic. Thank the cooks that pursue this hobby. Thank the spectatorswho flock here to bear witness and be thankful that for 47 years we have celebrated this November ritual.

Jim EzellPresident

A CHILI CALM

REFLECTIONS FROM THE EDThe road to Terlingua! By the time that many of you read this issue of the Terlingua Trails, the

47th Annual TICC will have become part of CASI history. Many of the CASI members do not knowthe behind the scenes prep work that must be accomplished by the Board of Directors to have a verysuccessful Terlingua International Chili Championship. In the Winter Board meeting each year, thepast TICC successes and challenges are discussed and assignments are made for the next TICC.

This year Jim Ezell made many travels to Terlingua to receive deliveries of trophies, meetingwith the county judge for the mass gathering permits, visiting with the TABC to gather the beer/winepermits, blocking hotel rooms for our sponsors, coordinating and receiving mass quantities ofsponsor product give-a-ways and banners, and coordinating the printing of TICC armbands. Ed Blaircoordinated the contract for the band and sound system, the contract for the Director’s radios, ordering of the pepper, chair, and stove trophies, ordering the judging supplies, and ordering the

different shirts for the contestants, judges, officials, and directors. Darin Jester spent many hours on the phone coordinatingwith the Brewster County Sheriff’s Department and the Terlingua Medics for security and medical services. Glenda Vrba madesure that the new memorial board plaques were ordered, all the supplies and Head Judges for the Friday events were obtained, and coordinated the Toy Drive efforts.

Lee Kroencke and Kris Hudspeth coordinated the public relations efforts of radio advertising, social media, and pressreleases. Lee also made sure that we had volunteers for the front gate. Mary Ellen Gillen lined up and approved the TICCvendors and coordinated the ice delivery. Randy Duke set-up the volunteers to work in the main concession stands. DavidSexton set-up the telephone and modem lines and coordinated with our cell tower owner for maximum bandwidth.

Newcomer to the board, Patti Meyers helped Jenny Windsor coordinate the Thursday events, while, the experienced pro,Jenny Windsor, prepared and mailed out the invitations and packets, that every qualified contestant checks their mail box fordaily. Jenny was also involved in developing the TICC General Information Packet, the schedule of events and all the suppliesto register the contestants, judges, and officials. Jenny coordinated the CASI Store items with Dorathy Williams. Also, newlyelected, Tim Collier took on the responsibility of helping Don Hoy prepare for another successful year in Krazy Flats.

The Ranch Manager, “Wappo” Schrade made several trips to the ranch for maintenance and repairs; but the biggestchallenge that Wappo faced was the growth of grass, bushes, and tumbleweeds brought on by the extra rainfall in Terlinguathis year. Wappo coordinated the contracts for the Porta-Johns, trash containers, and ranch clean up. Last, but not least,Wappo scared off the snakes before everyone showed up.

So as you can tell, with everyone doing the projects listed above, it only left me a few items to accomplish; like negotiatingour insurance policies for TICC, ordering new “no trespassing-guest must wear armbands” signs, developing the TICC stageand announcement schedules, coordinating the poster contest and printing of the new poster, coordinating with Keith Karafffor the “virgin” cooks reception, coordinating with Ralph Hay for the Old 320 meeting, and developing the CASI Raffle ticketsand coordinating the raffle with Nancy Hewlett.

All of this prep work is a labor of love for the CASI organization and is only the beginning, so that all the other volunteerscan join in during the week’s events and make the CASI Terlingua International Championship event the “biggest party in thedesert” and the largest and best chili championship in the WORLD!!!!!

DONATIONS AND MEMORIALSwere made to the CASI Scholarship Fund by:

Jackie KoltzOctober 11, 2013

Palmyra, VA

Well…it is almost that time and I am busy makingsure all my things are together and making lists ofthings to pack. I hope I do not forget anything.

I need everyone to send me their Casa Fiesta labelsor receipts. The sooner I get them the sooner I can getthem input into my spread sheet.

Volunteers will be needed everywhere at TICC.Be sure to volunteer…it is a great way to see everyone

and get to know them. I know I need volunteers to help sell Southwest Airlineraffle tickets. I plan to offer them at Krazy Flats and the Main Concessionstarting on Tuesday. If you checked out tickets see me to turn in money andstubs.

The Friday Events are a huge money maker for the Scholarship Fund soplease sign up and compete! You just might win! Friday is a big day forvolunteers and if you want to volunteer but do not know who to see…ask me. Iwill get that information for you.

It is also time to contact schools in your area and talk about our ScholarshipProgram. I would like to see more Pods involved this year.

See ya down the Chili Trail!

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT CHANGES HAPPENING NOW

Greetings,

By the time you read this, there are exciting changes taking place.Plans are well under way to combine the two CASI websites into one. That’s just the beginning. There are new online tools available to speedmembership and submit cookoff results. The calendar for planned cookoffscontains Google Maps and updating your online profile has never beeneasier.

But first, for those of you who like things just the way they are, you arein luck. All the manual systems and methods you are accustom to now willremain in place. However those of you expecting the instant gratification ofsmart phones and tablets will be excited with the new changes.

In addition to working closely with Jim Stateczny, Joel Bowman, theGreat Pepper of the Piedmont Pod, has joined me on the IT/Webcommittee and brings his career knowledge of computer systems to theteam.

If you have not been to the website recently please check it out. Therewill be additional announcements there and on the blog regarding changestaking place in the weeks ahead.

Who says you can’t teach an old dog some new tricks. The upgradesyou see taking place are designed with you and CASI’s growth in mind, and think of it just like your favorite chili recipe that requires an occasionalface-lift to get to the top.

All the best along the chili trail,

Lee Kroencke

We planted our vineyard (800 vines or about 1 acre) on 4/14/12 andharvested our first crop on 8/17/13. Normally it takes 2-3 years to have aviable crop but the summers are so long in Texas that sometimes you getlucky. The weather lately has been just about perfect for growing grapes. Our grapes love Hot and Dry weather! We are making plans to add anotheracre of vines next spring.

Our harvest day was amazing! We were expecting less than a ton ofgrapes but ended up with almost 2 tons. These grapes will make about 100cases (1200 bottles) of wine. We had 19 volunteers helping with the harvestand then we stomped the grapes before they went into a tank to begin theirtransformation into wine.

We are growing Tempranillo grapes which are native to Spain. Theyproduce a medium bodied red wine that has a slightly spicy flavor. Our firstwine will be released by Perissos Vineyards & Winery in Kingsland, TX in thefall of 2014. The wine will have the Perissos Winery label with the name of ourvineyard (Vineyard at PnQ Ranch) on the front and a little blurb about ourvineyard on the back. Perissos Vineyards is located on Park Road 4 betweenKingsland and Inks Lake State Park.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

This unprovokedact of aggression on the part of the City ofAnnapolis had the effect of cutting offEastport residents and businesses fromthe rest of the city. The somewhat fractiouscitizens of Eastport, feeling the sting ofrejection by The City and, perhaps, somewhat emboldened by the generouspouring habits of a local bartender, decided

to declare war against The City ofAnnapolis and secede. Thus, to the rallyingcries of “Up The Republic” , the micro-nation known as The Maritime Republicof Eastport was born. For moreinformation contact Rick [email protected], 301.938.4969
