Case 1.2 The Pasha Bulker: Attraction and Reaction

Case Study Questions

1.  The many maritime authorities involved included local, national and international

bodies, all of which have professional codes of ethics. Do you think there would have

been any conflict between these various codes during the salvage attempt?

Yes. I think there would have been any conflict between these various codes during the

salvage attempt. Based on the Pasha Bulker case study, it involves three bodies, the local,

national and international authorities. Therefore, each party would have had different

types of ethics. The professional codes of ethics that these bodies follow are referring to

etiquette and law; they are the rules that govern the right conduct. The purpose of these

bodies is the same; however, they would have been coming from three different positions

to solve the issue. As we can see, even though they have the same purpose but due to their

different thinking and points of view, this causes the conflicts between them. This results

in the salvage attempt taking longer to be achieved. Finally, in my opinion, I suggest that

the three bodies should have the same thought to accomplish their goal. The three bodies

should also place the safety of the people salvaging the boat as their top priority; this

should help resolve any conflict of interest.

2.  Greenpeace was able to very cleverly place a light shining upon the Pasha Bulkerwhen the salvage attempts were being made, stating messages such as ‘this is what

global warming looks like’. Is Australia’s dependence upon the use of oil as fuel and

our high standard of living compatible with our expressed concern about global

warming?

My answer is yes. We should have to be concerned about global warming. Based on

the issue, we should look after the environment within our country; it is an essential part

that we need to regard. Based on the case study, I will be supporting solar power as a

replacement. This is because solar power can help reduce little consumption on ships,

such as Pasha Bulker. Furthermore, solar power produces electricity; this will result in

convenience and easiness to people. Therefore, the functions of solar power will not

create any problems to the environment. As we can see, solar power is a highly useful and

clean technology for people to use in their daily lives and it does not badly effect the

environment. Besides that, we should also be concerned with our high standard of living.

We must look at the expenses that we can afford to spend. Due to high standard of living,

most people will not look after the environment. Mostly, richer people will want to

expand their operations and develop their businesses. They are not usually concerned with

the environment affected by operations. Based on this situation, these will pollute the

environment and will not be good for our country.
