NEWSLETTER www.caryphotographicartists.org September 2018 CELEBRATING MEMBER NEWS: Lynne Necrason had her series, “A Tranquil Morning”, accepted in the the LensWork 2018 Seeing in Sixes juried publication. She is among just 50 photographers selected for the book, which is due for publication this month. Each artist submitted a series of six cohesive images. Jo Bolton, Alan Clark, Don Ducey, Barbara Guin, Mike Guin, Harry O’Connor and Brenda Wynne, all members of The Focus photography collective, have an exhibition at 311 Gallery, 311 W. Martin, Raleigh, running September 30 through October 27. The title of the show is The Focus…on The Road Less Traveled. The road less traveled is both a literal and metaphorical byway traversed over land or via the power of thought. Far removed from interstates and mainstream social norms, it may lead us to images of non-conformity and independent thinking, uncommon perspectives, the natural beauty and remoteness of hinterlands, or the crumbling remains of days gone by. Please join them for the opening reception October 5, 6-8pm during Raleigh’s First Friday events. Alan Clark had two images accepted into the 311 Gallery Annual Landscapes and Seascapes Juried Show 2018. “Tybee Island Sunrise” and “Craggy Pinnacle Trail” and other exhibit pieces are on display September 6 - 29. The opening reception is September 7 from 6-9 pm. Brenda Wynne also has 2 images, “Evening on Shackleford Banks” and “Flatbed Truck” in the 311 Gallery Landscapes and Seascapes show. Join her and Alan for the Sept. 7 reception. Michael Ligett had an image juried into the annual “Bank of Arts” exhibit in New Bern. This is a large, national multiple-media exhibit with a reception September 14th at the Bank of Arts gallery, New Bern. Michael will also be exhibiting images from his “Shape of Light” abstract B&W portfolio at Counter Culture coffee in Durham from October 1-31. Joe Lipka will have an exhibit, After the Memories, at the Page Walker Arts and History Center from September 6 through October 8. There will be a gallery talk on October 5. This project is the latest chapter in the ongoing Academy Street photographs. The exhibit illustrates changes on Academy street using pairs of Joe's photographs over the past thirty years, as well as historic images from the Town of Cary Archives. Fran DeRespinis, Don Namm, Lynne Necrason and JJ Raia, members of The Image Salon are exhibiting A Sense of… through October 21 at the Herb Young Community Center, 101 Wilkinson Ave., Cary. Each photographer depicts their individual interpretations of the overall theme, "A Sense Of..." by selecting their own topics such as "A Sense of . . . Light," or "A Sense of . . . Tranquility." Using a broad spectrum theme showcases the diversity in styles amongst this group of award winning photographers by portraying each photographer’s unique view of their own "sense." EXHIBITIONS: Everything’s A Rendition - Juried Competition Call for Entry. Deadline: October 10 -Install date November 27. -Number of Entries Allowed: 5 Maximum -Location: President's Hall, Cary Arts Center

CPA has been offered a wonderful opportunity by Denise Dickens, Cary's Public Arts Coordinator, to participate in a joint exhibit with The Fine Arts League of Cary (FALC). The theme of the exhibit is Everything is a Rendition and it is based on the premise that every artist, regardless of whether they are a photographer, painter, sculptor, or even an observer simply viewing a scene, “sees” and interprets it in their own way.

With this exhibit, CPA and FALC members can produce their own artistic rendition of specific iconic Cary scenes. The plan is to display only one photograph and one painting/illustration of the same scene to illustrate how Everything is a Rendition. The five Cary locations are: *Downtown Park Fountain - Academy St and Dry Ave across from Cary Arts Center. *Page-Walker Art & History Center building - 119 Ambassador Loop. *Carpenter Farm Supply store in Carpenter village - 1933 Morrisville Carpenter Rd. *Cary Arts Center -101 Dry Avenue, Cary. *Ivey Ellington House - 135 W Chatham St. The site must be recognizable in each photo submitted. No unidentifiable abstracts or indoor photos of subject locations will be allowed.

It is important to emphasize that art is an interpretation of a scene by an artist and then rendered in the artists selected medium. Each piece is the original interpretation and creation of the artist and everyone should use their artistic vision to determine how they will render the image as long as the location is identifiable.

This exhibit is open to all CPA members. You may only submit your single best image from each of the five locations. All photographs must be new work. Your entries will be juried by a select panel of CPA members, and only one photograph will be chosen to represent each of the five identified Cary locations. It is important that we receive submissions from all five subject locations, so please think about photographing multiple or all locations.

Juried photographers will be notified by October 24 to allow time for printing and framing of pieces. There is a framed maximum size limit of 16x20 inches and photos must be framed with white mat board and a simple black frame.

To enter, please submit a .jpg of each image. For bed viewing via our projector, images should be sized: Vertical images - the tall side 1050 pixels. Squares - 1050 pixels. Horizontals images should have the long side 1400pixels (height no more than 1050 pixels). Please use the following naming convention: yourname-nn-xxx.jpg. Where nn is a sequence number so your images will sort in the order you want and xxx is whatever description you want. For example, jdoe-01-sunset.jpg. Submissions should be emailed to: [email protected] by October 10.

This years’ judges are: Roger Manley, Gregg Museum of Art & Design at North Carolina State University. Roger’s first show,"A Blessing From the Source”, was at NCSU in 1988. He served as curator of the Museum of Art & Design in the 1990's. Roger is a consummate artist, photographer, filmmaker, author, lecturer, folklorist, and curator. He has held fellowships at U.S. and international arts centers. He has been curator of more than 40 institutions internationally. Roger's photographs have been exhibited internationally. They include such diverse subjects as: migrant workers, miners, Native Americans, factory workers, Palestinian villagers, Australian Aboriginals, and self-taught artists. Stacy Bloom-Rexrode has followed a variety of paths in pursuit of her artistic career: graphic designer, art historian, gallery director, and design/build general contractor. She now blends her talents as a multi-talented, multi media artist and Curator of Exhibition and Collections for the City of Raleigh. Stacy is an artist who is self-described as determined, compassionate, and feminist. She uses a variety of artistic media to persuade the viewer to consider the underrepresented, discarded, disregarded, and domestic. Many of her works involve participatory installations such as found in "TAG! You're it!”. Others use materials our society often discards to depict the contrast between our commonplace items and services and how we unknowingly hand them down as heirlooms to future generations.

EDUCATION: Y Learning Photography Project Fall 2018 Update: The first teaching session with the Reedy Creek Magnet Middle School Y Learning students is scheduled for October 16th. The plan is to teach the students basic photography skills over a 7 to 8-week period and take the students on two photography field trips. We learned from the first project that the Fall school session is the best time to host this project. This year we will be accepting donations or pledges as part of the YMCA's annual campaign, which runs from October 4th to November 8th. YMCA Pledge Cards will be available at the September CPA meetings along with information on how you can pledge online at https://www.ymcatriangle.org/campaign/ymca-annual-campaign. The donations the CPA board and members made to the first project enabled us to sponsor 5-6 students ($300/student). We hope we can count on your donations again for the second Y Learning Photography Project. This Y Learning Photography Project will end with an exhibit of the students’ photos and a reception. Mark your calendar for this event, which is being held at Glenaire Retirement Community on Friday, December 7 at 7 pm. All CPA members are invited!
