Your motivation for taking the Msc programme of your choice.

The master program which I most identify with is hydraulic engineering. To understand my

motives I must go back to my childhood where I first noticed the appeal for water irrigation. From

where I come from, families work the land to make bread every day and irrigated land is a major

input of this process. The importance of water goes beyond the desire for survival, even toreligious levels. It is likely that throughout my childhood , watching my family till and irrigate the

field , has awakened in me a love of water and the need to "understand " its behavior , always

thinking to ensure my family with food.

Moreover, in recent decades, Peru has launched a series of major water projects, one being the

Majes 1. The precursor and in the words of the experts thelaboratoryfor projects that we can

now appreciate. It is this reality that calls me to deepen my knowledge in the field and to develop

solutions that translate science and technology of water in the welfare and prosperity of the

population. To sum up my motivations, they are both family and professional.

Why you are interested in TU DELFT and what you expect to find here.

When it comes down to hydraulics, no one is alien to the idea that the Netherlands have great

knowledge and experience in this area due to the need for safer environments in which they live.

Also the fact that TU DELFT is one of the best technical universities of the world. It denotes the

level of research and development it has. These two reasons lead me to think that TU DELFT is the

best choice when it comes to water technologies.

Am also convinced that the most important asset of an educational institution are the minds that

create it. That is why the reputation of TU DELFT appeal to the level of teachers and students that

pass through its classrooms every year. It is exactly what I expect, I think the entire atmosphere is

filled beyond creativity, leadership and science. No stranger to the fact that in Europe the elite

universities like TU DELFT allocate resources to research and development of new technologies. I

hope to be part of that reality through my research project.

If there are optional specifications in the Msc programme of your choice: which specialization(s)

    interest you most, and why?

Water problems must be solved in a multidisciplinary way, which is why my second specialization

could be water management. I have a background that can be supplemented with engineering

management training. An example of this is the disadvantages when mining companies govern

their projects. Recently in Peru we have witnessed these events, in which both sides (residentsand businesses) have lost the opportunity to co-exist together for the development and welfare of

the population. For instance, Yanacocha mining company could not continue with its gold mining

project due to the potential risks of their operation contaminating environment and water

sources. This created a discomfort in the city and unleashed protests that eventually ended the

project. Currently both sides have been negatively affected by the operation and they cannot

continue with the project. This affects the population by the decline in investment in the area.

In my academic experience I took a graduate level course in which I had an introduction to water

management. That was my first experience which offered me a different approach to address the

problems that go beyond hydraulics. Without any reasonable doubt, that experience change my

frame of mind and gave me a tool that few professionals related to water know.

Describe your hypothetical thesis project; what kind of a project would you prefer if you werefree to make a choice? Also briefly explain what you would want to explore in your thesis

project. Provide a maximum of three hypothetical thesis topics and elaborate on your particular

    interests in them.

Currently I am in charge of the irrigation project designs that are located within the area of

influence of the Olmos project. The Olmos project is a public/private initiative to promote

Peruvian agricultural exports. Like many other major hydraulic projects, it is essential to evaluate

the hydraulic and hydrological behavior over the years, especially when the system operates at

    100% of its design capacity.

Also, this project only provides half the water needed for crops, consequently requiring each user

to drill wells. Preliminary studies demonstrate that groundwater is more than 200 meters deep

and there is a potential risk due to the proximity to the sea. The future over-exploitation of

groundwater aquifer means a contamination with salty seawater (Marine Intrusion). However, the

proximity to the sea brings the opportunity to use desalination technology for agriculture

    purposes.

Finally the three thesis topics that could be taken are:

    - Analysis and simulation of the hydraulic behavior for the Olmos project under different scenarios

    of water consumption.

    - Modeling of the aquifer under the influence of Olmos project for evaluation of potential waterproduction and the risk of seawater intrusion.

    - Evaluation of the use of water treatment technologies for agriculture in the Olmos project.

A brief summary (maximum 250 words) of the thesis work or the final assignment (to be) done

for your Bachelors programme, including information on the credits earned, grade, and full

    workload.

In order to get my degree I conducted research with this title: Selection and installation of a

pumping system with variable speed and constant pressure for an irrigation system (Quilman -Caete Peru).

In summary, I choose a representative field to evaluate pumping technology which optimizes

    power consumption.

The project was divided into the following stages:

    - Irrigation system designs considering water requirements and crop labours.

    - Hydraulic design of the pipe network using software that ensures optimization in terms of initial

    and energy costs.

    - Standard selection of pumps, filters, equipment, etc.

    - Technical and economic evaluation of the system under these two scenarios: pumping with

constant speed vs pumping with variable speed and constant pressure.

To conclude, pump technology with variable speed allowed a more flexible and adjustable

performance to specific demands of crop water consumption. It was also found that by using this

technology the project saves energy of up to US$ 900 / year. This translates into an optimal

management of energy, water and environmental care .

As a result of this research , farmers in the area began to consider this technology as an alternative

to their projects. Today the farm where I conducted the research is a model of agriculture for its

    features.
