Sending Forth

The overarching theme in all the Scripture readings today is God’s abundant and limitless mercy. In the first reading, God is frustrated by the actions of the stiff-necked Israelites, who have grown impatient and made an image of the calf to worship. Moses reminds God of the love and commitment God has promised to the people, and God mercifully relents. St. Paul in the letter to Timothy, speaks of his own conversion experience. He was on the road to Damascus intent on torturing and killing Christians when God touched him and changed his life, converting him in a moment. God not only changed Paul’s heart and forgave his past misdeeds, but made him a pillar of the early Church. Who better to teach others of God’s love and mercy than one who has experienced it in profoundly in his own life? In the Gospel, Jesus tries to explain to the Pharisees that not only will sinners always be welcome at his table, they are the very reason he is there! In the parable of the one lost sheep, Jesus describes the rejoicing in heaven for “one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance.” There is no recrimination of the lost sheep, no chastisement, rather the lost one is relentlessly and lovingly sought, and when found, celebrated with joy and carried home. In the parable of the Prodigal Son, we have an answer for the ninety-nine righteous people who may grumble, as the Pharisees did, about the fuss and importance paid to sinners; the father’s answer to the son who remained loyal, “My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours.” We all only gain through the loving and merciful nature of our God. When we stray from God, God will continually seek us, never giving up on us and the hope that we will turn back to him. When we do turn back, we will not need to trudge a long road of repentance, God will be there, running to meet us and carry us back home. We will all need this mercy at some, if not many, points in our lives. If we are not lost, we are with God, and everything God has is ours, and we are encouraged to join in the celebration for each family member who is found and brought home safely. Like St. Paul, we believe that “Christ Jesus came to save sinners,” ourselves included.

First Reading — “Why should your wrath blaze up against your own people, whom you brought out of Egypt?” (Exodus 32:7-11, 13-14).

Psalm — I will rise and go to my father (Psalm 51).

Second Reading — The grace of our Lord has been abundant (1 Timothy 1:12-17).

Gospel — There is great rejoicing in heaven and among the angels when a sinner repents (Luke 15:1-32 [1-10]).

LITURGY VAULT “The liturgy is celebrated for God and not for ourselves;

it is His work; He is the subject; and we must open ourselves to Him” (Pope Benedict XVI, 3 October 2012).

THE ORDER OF MASS: THE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST – PART 1 The Heart of the Mass

In our examination of the Order of Mass, we have thus far reviewed the Introductory Rites and the Liturgy of the Word. We now come to the very heart of the Mass: The Liturgy of the Eucharist.

The Liturgy of the Eucharist is the major part of the Mass and comes after the Liturgy of the Word. It “corresponds to the words and actions of Christ at the Last Supper. Christ took bread and the cup, gave thanks, broke, and gave them to His disciples saying: ‘Take and eat; this is My Body. Take and drink; this is My Blood. Do this in memory of Me’” (Rev. Jovan P. Lang, OFM, Dictionary of the Liturgy (1989), pp. 359-360).

It is during the Liturgy of the Eucharist that ordinary bread and wine truly become the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ; what looks, smells, tastes, and feels like ordinary bread and wine have been transubstantiated into the Body and Blood of Christ.

In the headlines recently were the results of a study conducted by the Pew Research Center titled What Americans Know About Religion (PewForum.org, 23 July 2019). This survey reported that “nearly seven-in-ten Catholics (69%) say they personally believe that during Catholic Mass, the bread and wine used in Communion ‘are symbols of the body and blood of Jesus Christ’. Just one-third of U.S. Catholics (31%) say they believe that ‘during Catholic Mass, the bread and wine actually become the body and blood of Jesus’”.

This is very sad. Could Christ Jesus have made it any clearer?

“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me. This is the bread which came down from heaven, not such as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live for ever” (John 6:53-58).

And yet, the Gospel also records the following:

“Many of his disciples, when they heard it, said, ‘This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?’ But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at it, said to them, ‘Do you take offense at this? […] After this many of his disciples drew back and no longer went about with him” (John 6:60-61, 66).

The Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist is a mystery—a mystery of faith. We will explore this mystery over the coming weeks.

A MESSAGE FROM JUNIPERO SERRA SCHOOL PRINCIPAL: STEVE HENDERSON

The idea of the one-room schoolhouse is as indelible in the American mind as is the cowboy or the steam locomotive. A Preschool through 8th grade school like Junipero Serra School is a whole school version of the one-room schoolhouse. The advantage of a learning community that mixes a range of ages is that older students have opportunities to be like big brothers and sisters to the younger students. This gives older students a greater sense of responsibility, leadership and an understanding of assuming their place in the world as a responsible adult. For younger students, it is a wonderful experience to learn and have fun with the Big Kids. This last week saw the first meetings of the JSS Buddies program! 7th grade students partnered up with the kindergarten on the play structure for fun. The kindergartners loved showing off their prowess on various challenges of the play structure and got help along the way from the Big Kids. JSS 7th graders rose to the challenge, making sure everyone was included and having a good, and safe, time. As I was first starting as Principal in July, I spoke to many people about JSS. One thing I heard repeatedly was that JSS is a safe school and it has a family like feel. JSS has a family feel because it is a cohesive and small learning community, anchored in clear spiritual values, and because the Faculty of the school have, over time, developed activities like the Buddy Program. I feel blessed every morning at Carmel Mission’s school and am thankful to God for bringing me into the JSS Family!

Thank You for your Stewardship! Your continued generosity for the week ending in 9/1/2019

I thank you for your sense of Stewardship and your great generosity. —Fr Paul, Pastor

ADDRESS FROM ST. POPE JOHN PAUL II The Carmel Mission Basilica was visited by His Holiness, St. Pope John Paul II on September 17, 1987 during the Pope’s visit to the west coast. He also visited Mission San Fernando and Mission Delores in San Francisco. But he came here because it was the resting place of Fr. Junipero Serra. Here are some of the Pope’s comments:

On why they came: “It was a decision to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ at the dawn of a new age, which was extremely important for both the European settlers and the Native Americans.”

On the missions: “These buildings and the men who gave them life, especially their spiritual father, Junípero Serra, are reminders of an age of discovery and exploration.”

On Fr. Serra: ‘Very often, at crucial moments in human affairs, God raises up men and women whom He thrusts into roles of decisive importance for the future development of both society and the Church… So it is with Junípero Serra, who in the providence of God was destined to be the Apostle of California, and to have a permanent influence over the spiritual patrimony of this land and its people, whatever their religion might be.”

On the passion of Fr. Serra: “He not only brought the Gospel to the Native Americans, but as one who lived the Gospel he also became their defender and champion. At the age of sixty he journeyed from Carmel to Mexico City to intervene with the Viceroy on their behalf—a journey which twice brought him close to death…” “Much to be envied are those who can give their lives for something greater than themselves in loving service to others. This… is what draws people to Christ.”

On the Carmel Mission: “This serene and beautiful place is truly the historical and spiritual heart of California.”

This insight into the Mission history was provided by the Carmel Mission Docent Association. If you would like to find out more about becoming a Docent, please contact Nancy Hardy at [email protected] or 831-624-8846.

Dear Friends of Carmel Mission,

I personally invite you to our 55th Annual Carmel Mission Fiesta on Sunday October 6, 2019 from 11-5 p.m. Our main goals this year are to bring the larger community together to celebrate and get acquainted in our breathtaking Carmel Mission Courtyard and raise much needed funds to benefit Junipero Serra School. The funds raised will directly support Principal Henderson’s vision of providing a solid Catholic based education to our younger community.

The 2019 Fiesta Committee is organizing a truly fun event!

The festivities will kick off with our annual procession from the Basilica following our 11:00 a.m. mass on October 6th. Accompanied by a Mariachi Band, I will lead our congregation to the courtyard. I encourage you to stay and join in the festivities by partaking in the made to order fresh food from food trucks, shop the local artisan wares, and enjoy a drink while watching the performance of Aztec Dancers followed by the locally famous Money Band. On the Junipero Serra School Grounds at the Kid Zone the popular DJ Frank will engage our kids in interactive games and award youth oriented prizes. I encourage you to bring your friends and family to enjoy!

Most importantly, we need your support to make this fundraising effort a success as this annual fiesta is a key event held to financially benefit Junipero Serra School. The proceeds from the raffle tickets w ill be used to support the Opportunity Fund which helps deserving students and their families afford a quality Catholic education. Proceeds will also be used to support Principal Henderson’s vision aimed at enriching the current educational program designed to cultivate, not only academic excellence and creative expression, but also guide positive character development incorporating Christian values of service and positive character development.

To reach this goal, I have enclosed two books of 5 raffle tickets each. I ask you to sell or purchase them for either 5$ per ticket or 5 for 20$. Please kindly purchase or sell them and return the proceeds to the JSS school office. Do not hesitate to ask for more when you return the proceeds! Principal Henderson will emcee the event and engage the crowd by drawing winners and awarding prizes through the afternoon. The Fiesta Committee is excited to announce it has secured the Grand Prize of $1,000 which was donated by Junipero Serra parents with local businesses and will be given away at the end of the day.

I thank you for your membership of our wonderful parish community and your continued support of our excellent parish school.

In the great love of Jesus Christ,

Fr. Paul P. Murphy

Pastor at Carmel Mission
