Hamilton County Marketplace Comes to Town

The three amigos, or part-ners, of Hamilton County Marketplace: Susan Brooks, Jeff Zeckel and Brad Cook.

of snow, people were bundled in winter coats and the tem-perature was a whopping 10 degrees. No, it wasn’t the fair; the Hamilton County Marketplace had come to town.

Brainchild of vendors Brad Cook, Jeff Zeckel (both of Noblesville) and Susan Brooks of Atlanta, the concept of the Hamilton County Marketplace was birthed out of necessity. “We needed to provide a venue for like-minded individuals who were busy selling their wares throughout the summer months, but didn’t have a wintertime option,” said Cook. Cook (who owns Brad Cook Art), Brooks (who owns Dip Stix) and Zeckel (who owns Zeck’s BBQ), contracted with the fairgrounds for six days each year for the next two years.

The Marketplace meets on one Saturday from November through April at the Exhibition Building on the Hamilton County 4-H Fairgrounds in Noblesville. The remaining dates for 2010 are as follows:

(Open to the public from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.)

February 6, 2010 – $1 Admission goes to Janus • Developmental ServicesMarch 20, 2010 – $1 Admission goes to Hamilton • County Historical SocietyApril 24, 2010 – $1 Admission goes to Hamilton • County Humane SocietyNovember 6, 2010 – $1 Admission goes to Agapé • Therapeutic Riding Resources, Inc.December 18, 2010 – $1 Admission goes to Meals on • Wheels Hamilton County

The first event was held on January 2 and started early as a wide variety of vendors, all hand-picked by the three, packed into the exhibition hall and set up shop for the day. A large crowd of shoppers moved from booth to booth finding some of their favorite products from the summer festivals and farmers’ markets: food, jewelry, accessories, books, woodworking, body products, art and photography. A Made in Indiana booth featured products from, of course, only Indiana.

Cook has had such an overwhelming response from vendors that they currently have a waiting list for the jewelry, candle making and handbags categories. Their 71 booth spots sold out for January, and the majority of the vendors signed up for all six months.

From the start, Cook, Zeckel and Brooks decided they wanted to involve local charities in the mix. “This whole thing isn’t driven by greed. It’s driven by opportunity,” said Cook. “By getting the not-for-profits involved, we are able to do a good thing for the community, and the not-for-profits

also do a service for us by providing the people on the door so the three of us can man our booths.” Each month a dif-ferent not-for-profit from various communities in the county will be set up in the entryway to collect the $1 entry fee. The organizations get to keep these proceeds and may also receive other donations throughout the day.

Chaucie’s Place, a child advocacy center in Carmel, benefit-ed from the January Marketplace. Executive Director Ginger Kadlec was thrilled by the support. Since their doors opened in 2001, Kadlec says Chaucie’s Place has helped interview over 2,400 children who were victims of abuse. All told, $1,400 was donated to Chaucie’s Place on Saturday. We were really pleased with the outcome of that,” said Kadlec. “In addition to the donations, we also received the names of some people who were interested in volunteering … one person is now volunteering as a body safety instructor. We were really honored to have been invited by the coordinat-ing committee,” she said.

Overall, Saturday’s shoppers were a happy crowd; happy to see some of their favorite summer products and happy to be out and about on a cold winter day. Brenda and Judy Bush of Sheridan, and Judy May of Indianapolis stopped by the Little C’s Arts & Things booth while May purchased a beau-tiful handmade alpaca coat. “We’ve had cabin fever,” said Brenda Bush. “We’ve been inside for three days.”

Sandy Schleeter, visiting from Georgia, and Karen Sherman and Charlene Moreillon of Noblesville, saw the Market-place on a TV newscast that morning and headed over. “We decided to do this as our ‘chick trip,’” laughed Moreillon.

Many of the shoppers were excited about their finds. Judy Poe of Noblesville was thrilled with her nostalgic purchase, an art print of the old Rainbow Roller Rink in Noblesville from Brad Cook Art. “My kids spent three days a week there,” she said. Poe’s daughter Kim Harris agreed with her mother remembering her skating days “doing the shuffle.”

Carmel Community Newsletter 5 February 2010

Ultimately, Cook rates the first marketplace a success. Plans are in the works to possibly expand the space. “We are so encouraged that we’re looking to accommo-date with additional space,” said Cook. Instead of turn-ing all the vendors down or putting them on a waiting list, we’d like to figure out a way to get them in there.” And if the interest generated on this frigid January day is any indication, February’s show will be packed.

Major Surgery That You Should Know.”

Cancer Patient Walking: My first big shock of the day came when the nurse came to take me to the OR for surgery, and she MADE ME WALK THERE! In the movies they al-ways show the patient being wheeled on a gurney down the hall while their loved ones hold their hands and profess their never-ending devotion to the patient. My experience was more like a scene out of “The Green Mile.” All I needed was Tom Hanks marching behind me yelling, “Cancer patient walking!” while I shuffled off in my sad little blue gown and green surgical socks. Also, I’m blind as a bat and they took away my glasses, so I couldn’t see where I was going and I almost ran down my surgeon when I walked full steam into the OR. The final insult: they made me hop up on the operat-ing table myself! After all that, I half expected them to ask me to hold the clamps for them during surgery.

I Need a Java Drip STAT!: It is a well known fact that you are not allowed to eat or drink after midnight the day of your surgery, so that was not a shock. But I’m a two-cup a morn-ing girl, and I wasn’t prepared for the reality that by the time I finally walked into the OR I would be experiencing serious caffeine withdrawal. Finally the anesthesiologist announced that he was about to give me some drugs to put me to sleep, and the java-deprived crank living inside me spoke up and said, “It’s about damn time!” I thought my surgeon, who had been loyally standing by me, was going to fall over from laughing, and he told me later he’d never had a patient say that before. I may have to mainline a latte before my next procedure.

The Cuckoo’s Nest: When I woke up after surgery in the recovery room, I was shocked to find that I wasn’t the only patient there. Nobody warned me that I would be sharing such a bizarre time with complete strangers. I was still without my glasses, drifting in and out of conscious-ness, which only added to the Twilight Zone experience. I could hear moaning and groaning and nurses trying to restrain patients who were trying to get up and leave. When I heard a woman scream from the other side of the room, “I just can’t take it anymore!” I considered the possibility that I had been accidentally routed to the psych ward (although in my head I responded to her, “I hear you sister!”). I foolishly thought a recovery area would be a quiet, calm, and private place where you could peacefully transfer out of anesthesia to consciousness, but I found out the hard way “Recovery Room” is actually hospital code for “Holding Cell.”

It’s Not as Bad as You Think: Even though I wasn’t prepared for all the surprises waiting for me during surgery,

surgery surprises

February 2010 6 Carmel Community Newsletter

I have always been pretty healthy, and my hospital experience has been limited to the labor and delivery of my three kids. I’ve never even had a cavity, let alone major surgery, so when I entered the hospital early on the morning of Decem-ber 7 to undergo bilateral mastectomies, there were some surprises. My six-hour surgery was deemed a suc-cess after pathology came back that all of the cancer had been removed. That information provided a great deal of relief, and has al-lowed me to look back at the surgery surprises and laugh a bit about the experience. Because of this, I decided to write a list of “The Things Nobody Tells You About

I had prepared myself for this to be a horrible experience, and that it wasn’t turned out to be the last, and best, sur-prise. I was blessed with gifted physicians who worked hard to leave me with as little physical and emotional scars as possible. I had amazing nurses who took great care of me, and did so while allowing me to hang on to my dignity. And due to the love and support I received from my fam-ily and friends, I never for one single moment felt alone. Having a mastectomy is not an experience I would wish upon my worst enemy, but I would gladly tell anyone facing this surgery this, “It’s not as bad as you think.” Every day I get a little stronger, and a little more ready to face the next challenge. Every day the strange and painful memory of my surgery fades a bit, and I am confident that in time all that will remain will be that feeling of love. Well, that and the memory of the other crazy lady in recovery.

Kevin was saved by a HeartScan at St.Vincent Medical Center Northeast.

“Measuring the amount of plaque inside my heart’s arteries, the HeartScan showed blockages of 100, 95 and 80 percent. I was immediately transferred to St.Vincent Heart Center of Indiana.”

Kevin received four stents to help clear his blockages. He credits the HeartScan and his physician’s insistence for un-dergoing the scan for saving his life.

“I truly believe that if I had been at another hospital, I would have gotten the ‘all clear’ and been released without the treatment I needed,” Kevin said. “I have convinced about 20 people, friends and people from my fire department and work, to get a HeartScan. I think it should be required for everyone.”

Local Heart Heroes

Nationwide, about half of all cardiovascular procedures are performed on patients age 65 and older; however, more than a third of cardiac patients are ages 45 to 64. Younger men and women should act quickly if they experience the follow-ing symptoms:

Chest pain• Discomfort in the arms, back, jaw, neck or stomach• Nausea or light-headedness• Shortness of breath•

“St.Vincent Health provides a wide range of cardiac services close to home,” said Kimberly Nealon, site administrator for St.Vincent Medical Center Northeast. “People will feel the Spirit of Caring the moment they walk through our doors.”

You can receive a $99 HeartScan through St.Vincent in Anderson, Fishers, Jennings and Indianapolis to identify your risk for heart disease. Used as a preventive measure, the computed tomography (CT) scan allows patients to make lifestyle changes based on the results. Call 866-432-4457 to schedule your HeartScan.

Kevin, 53, had come to Fishers for the day to visit his sister and work on her house. The intense pain he experienced knocked him to the floor. Once the pain subsided, the always-ready EMT-I used his cuff and stethoscope to take his own blood pressure.

A Close Call

Convinced he was doing bet-ter, Kevin did not call 911. He eventually let his sister drive him to the emergency department at St.Vincent Medical Center Northeast, which was only five minutes away. Routine cardiac test results appeared normal. However, his emergency physician insisted on per-forming one more test — the computed tomography $99 HeartScan — to see if an aortic tear caused Kevin’s symptoms.

“The computed tomography scan did not hurt and gave my physician results in about five or 10 minutes,” Kevin explained.

The Geist Half Marathon, Inc. board voted to extend the application deadline for their Health & Wellness Grant Program to February 15, 2010. School faculty and parent volunteers in Marion, Hancock, and Hamilton counties are encouraged to download the instructions and application online at www.GeistHalf.com.

“Our goal is to support and inspire healthy initiatives within schools that otherwise might not happen due to lack of funding,” said Doreen Long, Geist Half Marathon volunteer board member and chairperson of the grant request committee.

Applicants must submit a one-page form out-lining their proposed health and wellness pro-gram for the second half of the 2010 school year. Programs with the broadest impact and a budget less than $2,000 will be given priority.

Tom Britt, President of the Geist Half Mara-thon Inc., says the new Health & Wellness Grant Program will help further the mission of the group. “If parents and faculty want to start or expand a fitness program within their school, we don’t want money to stand in their way.”

Sponsors Needed

If you or your business is interested in sponsoring or volunteering for the 3rd annual “Race Around the Reservoir,” visit GeistHalf.com and click on the “Volunteer” or “Sponsors” links. Sponsorships start at $300 and are a great way to show your local support of childrens’ health and wellness.

Posters Available

If you would like a poster to display at your business, email [email protected] and you will have a 12” x 18” color poster mailed or delivered to you. Businesses along the race route, schools, and fitness facilities are encouraged to promote this great community event.

ired of the same old candy and card routine for Valentine’s Day? Need to think outside the box of chocolates, so to speak? Even though American con-sumers spend billions of dollars each year to express their emotions, it’s sometimes hard to come up with something unique to give a loved one. Whether it’s an evening with your sweetheart or special time with friends, here are some holiday ideas that will give this year’s event a special twist:

Express yourself. When is the last time you sat down and wrote an old-fashioned letter to your beloved? And no, texting or emails don’t count. Discover the fine art of love letters and surprise your sweetheart with words on paper, written by hand. But plain old copy paper won’t do, so you’ll need to visit the Westwood Paper Company, 20 Executive Drive, Carmel. Owner Jill Sowder prides herself on offering customers unique finds and one-of-a-kind items. Specialty papers, fine stationary and personalized gifts will help inspire your inner poet.

While you browze and pick out the perfect love letter sup-plies, you’ll also want to take a look at the array of products just right for personalizing your gifts.

“We produce customized beverage labels, including those for wine bottles,” explains Sowder. “In fact, we were so excited when one of our customers actually used one of the labels to ask someone to marry them,” she adds. “It was so romantic.”

In addition to paper products, the store offers delightful cupcake sets, including gift boxes, decorative paper cups, toppers and gift bags. See www.westwoodpaper.com for more details.

Speaking of cupcakes … Roses are great, and chocolates are too, but if you really want to make an impression, why not send your love a box of … cupcakes? Holy Cow Cup-cakes takes the art of scrumptious treats to a new level, with seasonal, fresh ingredients sure to make any mouth water. Owner Karen Sutton says this Valentine’s Day will feature a selection of decadent cupcakes with wonderful chocolates, new flavors, all available for delivery or pick-up in

decorative boxes.

“For Valentine’s Day, we’ll for sure feature The Ryan, a red velvet cupcake drizzled with a dark chocolate genache,” Sutton says. “We’ll have other wonder-ful flavors of cupcakes available, in addition to heart-shaped brownies, bon bons and other delights,” she says.

The store also carries gift cards and custom-made aprons. But you’d better get

your orders in early. Sutton says as they have an order cut-off for special deliveries

after the first week of February. However, carry-out orders are always welcome. Holy

Cow Cupcakes is located at 545 S. Rangeline Rd., Carmel. Visit www.holycowcupcakes.com for

more information.

Take It Easy. Who doesn’t need a little pampering, especially after enduring the cold, dry winter months?

Treat your honey (and yourself) to a special package at the Villaggio Day Spa and Salon, with locations in Fishers and Zionsville. Owner Barbara Rush says their special holiday packages include the XOXO.

“This is the perfect way to help your sweetheart prepare for a night out or for a special evening in together,” says Rush. “This sweet package includes an invigorating Sugar Kiss Body Scrub, a thirty-minute Relaxation Massage, and a European Pedicure,” she explains. You’ll also get a compli-mentary box of chocolates.

Other special Valentine’s Day packages include Couple Therapy, which is an hour Relaxation Message for Two and a 30-minute Classic Spa Facial. Champagne is included! And who says you have to have someone else buy you something for the holiday? Treat yourself to the Single and Satisfied Spa Package, and you (alone or with friends) will enjoy a 30-minute Classic Spa Facial, a 30-minute Relaxation Mes-sage, and a European Pedicure. For package details and spa locations, visit www.villaggiodayspa.com.

Trim and Tone. If you and your sweetheart are avoiding calories in order to get ready for bathing suit season, why not give yourselves the gift of good health? Personal Trainer Liz Burton, who helps clients all over the Northside, is offering special Valentine’s Day packages designed for couples, as well as for individuals. Burton says she has seen an increase in the amount of couples interested in training as a team over the past couple of years. In fact, Burton sees Valentine’s Day as the perfect time to make healthy commitments and get your body beach-ready.

your preference, enjoy a table with a view of the Geist Ma-rina at Bella Vita Restorante, 11699 Fall Creek Road, India-napolis. Owned by Shelley and Henri Najem, there’s nothing quite like the ambiance provided by this romantic setting. “It’s definitely a couple’s destination for Valentine’s Day,” says Shelley. “With our fireplace lit, the waterside glistening and ice or snow on the lake, diners can enjoy a truly unique atmosphere on a special day,” she says.

Henri, who serves as chef and creates the scrumptious menu from the kitchen, will work up a special entrée for the night not available on the regular nightly menu. A special couple’s package will include a bottle of wine or champagne, two entrees and a signature dessert to share.

Live entertainment and special giveaways will also be a part of the evening, as Shelley explains. “We usually have jewelry or bottles of liquor that we give away throughout the night for added fun.” The mezzanine will be open upstairs for guests to enjoy a cocktail and the panoramic view. To make reservations (recommended), and for specific menu information or pricing, visit www.bellavitaatthemarina.com.

For a unique, cozy and warm dining experience, you’ll want to check out Woody’s Library Restaurant, located at 40 E. Main St., Carmel. Owners Kevin and Richelle Ryder prom-ise a special night in their restaurant, which is the renovated Andrew Carnegie Library originally built in 1913.

The historic landmark is located in Carmel’s Arts & De-sign District, with library shelves featuring works of art created by local artisans, and a unique collection of books donated by customers over the years. For Valentine’s Day, a reservation will get you one of three seating times for the evening. You and your beloved will be treated to a glass of Pink Moscato to set the romantic mood, and the menu will feature an array of entrees and decadent desserts to choose from, including their famous Chocolate Fondue or Raspberry Romanoff.

After dinner, you might want to wander down to the base-ment to play shuffleboard and extend your evening in a comfortable, casual setting.

“Our restaurant really promotes an intimate atmosphere,” says Kevin. “It’s quiet and you can have a real conversation with your date,” he adds.

“Our bar is a friendly, neighborhood place, kind of like the one from Cheers,” adds Richelle. “We have a great jukebox with internet connection, so you can play any music under the sun,” she adds. To make reservations, and to find out more about the restaurant, visit www.woodyscarmel.com.

Burton enjoys showing couples different workout techniques and activities that they can do with each other, which helps clients stay mo-tivated and be accountable. Valentine’s Day packages include goal setting, personal training, and private in-home sessions, if desired, at a 20 percent discount if you book your sessions before Feb. 5. So often, big ideas are born from small places, and sometimes a fresh set of minds can create new ideas from old dilemmas. Such is the case of Carmel Green Teen, an organization dedi-cated to “Making Carmel greener, one youth project at a time.”

When Lauren Gibson was in the fifth grade, she wrote a report on polar bears and how climate changes were affecting these animals. The report awakened Lauren’s consciousness of environ-mental issues, and two years ago she attended a presenta-tion at Purdue University given by famed anthropolo-gist Jane Goodall. During her presentation, Goodall encouraged the kids in the audience to help her save the planet by joining her Roots & Shoots youth program to help people, animals, and the environment.

“She said that the youth were the hope and future of the world, and if we wanted to make a difference we needed to start working now. She identified climate change as the big problem for my generation, and told us it was our job now to help the environment, “says Gibson, now a freshman at Carmel High School. Gibson took Goodall’s words to heart, and when she returned home she gathered a few of her friends and orga-nized Carmel Area Roots & Shoots program. This group

completed many small projects, including removing trash from Cool Creek and collecting food for local food pantries.

In 2008, Lauren and her mother were shopping in a local Marsh grocery store when they saw a flyer for the Clorox Green Works $10,000 Green Heroes grant contest. After de-ciding to enter the contest, Gibson’s Roots & Shoots group spent time brainstorming different ideas for projects wor-thy of the $10,000 prize for a youth-driven green project. Gibson says, “Some of our ideas were great, but they were too small for a $10,000 budget.” Other suggestions, such as buying recycling bins for Carmel parks, had potential, but the group lacked the authority to install such a project and no means to maintain the bins. Then the group struck gold with the idea of creating a mini-foundation that would break the money into small grants that would be awarded to local youth-led green initiatives.

The group submitted their idea for the Carmel Green Teen Micro-Grant Program to the Clorox contest and then waited. After receiving word that they had been chosen among the entries as a top-ten finalist, the group had to rally support from the community to vote online, and on Earth Day 2009, the group was informed that they had been chosen one of five national winners.

Carmel Community Newsletter 15 February 2010

“We were so excited about winning and having the money available to fund projects in the commu-nity, but it was a learning experience to figure out how to award grant money,” comments Gibson. “We were so lucky to have the help of the United Way.” By utilizing the grant process and forms established by the United Way, the group

ideas are youth-driven. We want to see that the group is pas-sionate about the project they are proposing, and that they have the ability to follow through and complete the plan.” The deadline for spring applications is February 28, 2010.

After awarding the next round of grants, Gibson and her group hope to continue the process until the Green Works prize money is exhausted. The group has no current plans to attempt any additional fundraising as previous efforts have been less successful in raising significant funds, but Gibson states that the group is always open to donations from inter-ested parties. In a few short years, Gibson will be graduating from Carmel High School and moving on to pursue her goal of becoming a polar bear field scientist, and her hope is that the Green Teen group lives on after she is gone. “Hopefully someone will take leadership and continue what we’re do-ing. We would be more than happy to share what we have learned about the grant process with anyone interested in continuing the Carmel Roots & Shoots or Green Teen.” Be-yond continuing the programs, Gibson feels confident about the lasting impact of Carmel Green Teen. As she wrote in an application for a youth environment award the group plans to apply for, “Through this program we have the opportunity to help other kids have the power to make a difference. This will have a lasting effect on the environment, students and our entire community.”

When accepting a $650 micro-grant award on behalf of his Cub Scout Pack, Sam Whittman was quoted as saying, “A small change made by small people can make a big differ-ence.” By proving funds and encouraging their youth peers, the Carmel Green Teen organization is certainly making a big difference in their world.

Applications for the next round of micro-grants from Carmel Green Teen are due February 28, 2010. To find more information or contact Green Teen please go to www.CarmelGreenTeen.org.

began taking applications for their first round of micro-grants in the fall of 2009. Five worthy projects were selected from the submissions, and the win-ning groups received their grants during an awards ceremony on November 12, 2009 held in Carmel Civic Square. Gibson had a tough time identifying a favorite project. “All of the groups were great,” she says. “But the Cub Scouts were all so excited about their grant money and so passionate about the projects they had planned, it was fun to see.”

The first project from the fall grants has been com-pleted. Planting beds for an organic community garden were built December 5, 2009 at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Carmel and will be ready for spring 2010 planting. Fueled by the enthusiasm of the fall grant recipients, Carmel Green Teen is currently review-ing applications for spring projects. When asked what the group looks for when considering grant applicants, Gibson replied, “The most important element is that the

Shelbourne Road since the late 1990’s. The Reverend tells me that even before he had arrived at Holy Trinity Church there had been talk of relocating the Parish northward from Indianapolis. Reverend Gounaris shared, “The majority of our parishioners had pretty much moved north from where the church was formerly located.” He goes on to say, “There are not a plethora of Orthodox Churches in Indianapolis, we are in the position of having to go to or be closer to where many of our parishioners live.”

Holy Trinity is still in the process of getting their feet firmly planted in Carmel, but they are grateful and excited to be a part of the city. They offer many events and resources to the community, most notably GreekFest.

The Holy Trinity Parish will be holding the 37th annual GreekFest this coming summer. GreekFest is a time that the community can come together and celebrate diversity and culture. GreekFest has added a rich cultural element to Central Indiana that for many years was lacking. Reverend

Beginning in Indianapolis with several families in 1910, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church has grown to over 2,000 members and on Christmas Eve 2008 held their first services in a newly constructed Byzantine Tem-ple in Carmel. I recently had the opportunity to sit down in this truly beautiful struc-ture and talk to the Reverend Anastasios Gounaris.

Reverend Gounaris tells me that they have owned the twenty acres of land at the corner of 106th Street and

old Church new to Carmel: Holy Trinity Greek orthodox Church

Gounaris tells me, “It was really the Holy Trinity Greek Festival that was one of the early events in Central Indiana that opened people’s minds and palates to the whole idea of foreign cuisine.”

This summer’s GreekFest will be the second year it will have been held at their new Carmel location. Last year’s GreekFest was an overwhelming success with the loca-tion change, although some may remember traffic jams, long lines, and lack of parking. Reverend Gounaris says they have been working on the logistics of GreekFest so that these problems will be kept to a minimum. The Parish encourages the entire community to come out and celebrate the Greek culture with them at the 37th annual GreekFest this year and in the years to come.

As for the future of GreekFest in Carmel, Reverend Gou-naris says, “In the future we definitely want to introduce more activities that are of a cultural nature. We have that now with the food and the dancing, but we’re looking into expanding those offerings so that we can bring in artists and artisans from Greece that do all kinds of things from pottery

to weaving and traditional arts and crafts, so as to expand and broaden the range of things we offer to those coming here to the Festival.”

GreekFest is by far not the only thing Holy Trinity Church has to offer. Rev-erend Gounaris adds, “We welcome all people to not only sit in on our worship, but to participate in the in-creasing range of activities we are going to be offering in this Parish in the years to come.”

Holy Trinity invites every-one from all backgrounds to visit them. On Sundays they hold Morning Prayers at 8:15 a.m. and Divine Liturgy at 9:30 a.m., and on Wednesdays they hold Paraklesis, a supplication service to the Theotokos, at 6:30 p.m.

“I know how much I love coming here.”

It is late afternoon on an ordinary Thursday. An ener-getic brunette is busy placing crocks of paint brushes on tables. The air vibrates with creativity and the faint smell of chai latte from a Keurig machine next to the counter. Pausing, Jennifer Snook, owner of Creative Escape Pottery & Mosaic in Carmel, grins and says, “Love, love, love it!”

It is Ladies Night, a weekly affair held at Creative Escape, a paint your own pottery studio which offers fired arts such as pottery, mosaics, glass and silver. Thursdays at Creative Escape are “No kids, no husbands.” Customers are welcome to bring wine, as well as other food and drink.

“Ladies Night is a grown up thing,” says Snook, “The idea is for women to come in, kick back, relax, and get a few minutes away for themselves.”

If pottery seems secondary to socializing, it is because as the mother of two lively toddlers, Snook understands Ladies Night is more than creative outlet. “Some nights we might have a group come in together to learn a technique,” says Snook. “And sometimes women come in just to hang out and unwind, and that’s fine too.”

On this Thursday night, a group of Carmel women who play Bunko together regularly, traded in their dice for glue bottles to learn about fusing glass. When asked to describe the atmosphere at Ladies Night, the words “fun, relaxed, open” crop up regularly among the diverse group of women. While Snook demonstrates how to safely cut colored glass planes into shapes, the group agreed they could choose to spend the evening in a dozen other ways. But group member Mindy Bowman summed it up with, Ladies Night at Creative Escape was time, “To be with friends. Create something. Try something new.”

At another table, Anita Arnold, visiting from California, sat next to the Lilly Ollo kiln waiting for her silver jewelry to be complete, “What makes (Creative Escape) different is the variety of things you can choose to do. It isn’t all pottery, there are different things you want to try. I had never seen anything like Precious Metal Clay before today. My charm will be ready soon and I’m wearing it home.”

While delicately painting the edges of a vase, Ntianu Sababu said this was her first visit to Ladies Night, and she enjoys the open feel of the place.

Sitting next to her, friend Katie Price agreed with this senti-ment, saying, “(Ladies Night at the Creative Escape) has a fun atmosphere where you can be creative. A place where enthusiasm is more key than how well you can paint.”

According to Snook, the embracing atmosphere draws moth-ers, co-eds, nuns, and nurses back week after week, “The quality of time spent here is as important to us as the piece of pottery you take home.”

Ladies Night is every Thursday, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. For more information call, 317-569-8626 or visit the website at www.TheCreativeEscape.com.

Bloomington Indiana's Own The largest microbrewery in Indiana, Upland employs

two 60 barrel fermenters (King and Kong) and two 30

barrel fermenters. They are NOT just trying to make

great beer, they are trying to make different beers, with

unique character and flavors. Maybe that's the reason I

think we will sell more than 500 cases of Upland this

year. Your choice of 5 at our LOWEST PRICE EVER!!
