The first time I met Carroll Shelby, he was autograph-ing posters of himself at a Barrett-Jackson auction. Al-

though the line of fans was long, Carroll took his time to chat with each person, and make everyone feel special.

I felt like I knew him personally, even though I had only read about him in the pages of Road and Track and Car and Driver.

During the late ’60s, before the Internet, the only way we could get detailed reports on the races in Europe was through enthusiast magazines. We put up with the two-month lag, and in exchange got beautiful multi-page spreads, with exclusive photos and prose by experts.

The epic story of how Ford beat Ferrari (most recently in Go Like Hell by A. J Baime, HMH publishing) was our automotive version of the Iliad and the Odyssey, mythic tales of young Americans who brashly took on the so-phisticated Europeans. We matched their multi-cylinder alloy engines with our great lumps of cast iron – and at the end of 24 hours of racing at Le Mans, our American V8s came out victorious.

This weekend, we celebrate Ford Motor Company and all of the great cars it has built over the years. I learned to drive in a 1965 Mustang that my grandmother bought new. My stepfather taught me how to drive a stick in a 1958 Mercury Monterey wagon he had converted to a floor-shift four-speed (don’t ask why, I couldn’t tell you). I recall that as it still had the very tall rear axle ratio that the car was equipped with as an automatic, getting started on the hills of San Francisco was challenging.

If you love Fords (and why else would you be here?), I guarantee you’ll love American Car Collector, the maga-zine you’ve been waiting for. Each issue has features and profiles of cars that you need to know about, what they sold for and why. You’ll find a special introductory offer card in this directory, so mail it in today and become a part of the insider’s gang of car collectors.

And maybe you’ll find that 1969 Grabber Orange Boss 302 — with a shaker hood — of your dreams.

Welcome to our 18th Annual Ford Family Reunion at the Carlisle Ford Nationals, sponsored by Gu-

mout Performance Products. This year is sure to be a bustle of activity. We’re helping Shelby American celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Cobra, Carroll Shelby’s iconic sports car that has been the talk of the industry since its inception 50 years ago. And it’s as strong as ever with the brand-new, just-released 1,000 horsepower (STREETABLE) modification for the GT500! Team Shelby Northeast has had a calendar full of activ-ities this week to celebrate all things Shelby, culminat-ing with a dinner Friday night and a lunch on Saturday for their club members.

Along with the Shelby celebration, we’re featuring some of the timeless classics produced by Ford that started the whole performance craze back in the ’60s and led to the birth of the Mustang and the Shelby Co-bra. The Lightweights, as they were referred to in per-formance circles, are joined by the vehicles that were born with 406 cubic inch engines with a tri-power in-duction system. And the line of 427-ci engines, led by the SOHC engine that rocked the performance world and ignited the high performance wars of the ’60s and early ’70s. Primarily designed for race applications in NASCAR and NHRA racing circles, they were venerable street machines and kicked a lot of Bowtie and Penta-star butt!

And thus the never-ending quest for more power and speed led us to where we are today with the 1,000 horsepower Shelby. What a storied history from Ford and Shelby. Be sure to enjoy all the displays of these fine cars in the various buildings. Take some time to talk to the manufacturers and be sure to get “Up Close and Personal” with the all-stars of yesteryear who are here to talk “bench racing” with you.

We mourn the recent loss of Carroll Shelby and are honoring his achievements with an engine rev at noon Saturday. Read more on page 16.

DAISY (above)••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••Making its debut at the 2004 North American Inter-

national Auto Show, the Ford Shelby Cobra concept marked the return of Carroll Shelby to the Ford family. Designed and built in just five months, the Ford Shelby Cobra concept follows the formula of a large, high-performance engine in a small, lightweight body. Sit-ting on modified Ford GT chassis, its front engine, rear transaxle layout features an all-aluminum, naturally-aspirated V10 engine under the hood that produces 605 horsepower and 501 ft.- lbs. of torque. While many of the design cues, such as the large grille opening, hood scoop, stacked front and rear lamps, and low-back seats pay homage to the original cars, this Ford Shelby Cobra concept is a thoroughly modern inter-pretation of the legendary Shelby Cobras of the past.

1993 FORD SvT MUSTANg CObRA R••••••••••Producing 235 horsepower and 280 ft.-lbs. of torque

and available only in Vibrant Red with grey cloth, this was a race-ready version of the 1993 SVT Mustang Co-bra. Each Cobra R model featured larger brakes than stock, along with Koni shocks and struts, engine oil and power steering coolers, and radio, A/C and rear seat deletes. These were the last of the Fox-bodied Mustangs, and all 107 were sold out prior to their ar-rival at dealers in the spring of 1993.

2002 SvT FOCUS••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••The 2002 SVT Focus marked Ford’s first entry into

the sport compact “hot hatch” segment. Featuring

a unique 170-horsepower DOHC Zetec I4 engine, 6-speed manual gearbox, four-wheel disc brakes and a sport-tuned suspension riding on 17-inch wheels, the SVT Focus was also loaded with engineering tech-nology. The SVT Focus was the first North American Ford vehicle to utilize variable intake cam timing and was the first-ever Ford vehicle to feature a dual-stage intake, which improved torque at lower rpm and in-creased peak power at high rpm. Widely acclaimed at the time of its release by the automotive press, the SVT Focus is still regarded by many enthusiasts as one of the best-handling front-wheel-drive vehicles ever produced.

FORD SvT LIgHTNINg bOLT RANgER PROTOTYPE••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

A cornerstone of the Ford SVT “Toybox” since the completion of its build in 2002, the Lightning Bolt Ranger packs the powertrain of the 2001 Ford SVT F-150 Lightning into the smaller, lighter Ranger pack-age. Production Lightning front suspension pieces were used, along with Lightning brakes and a nar-rowed Lightning rear end housing 3.73:1 gears. The Lightning wheels up front were narrowed to 8 inches, while the wheels out back were widened to 12.5 inch-es to accommodate the massive 345/35ZR18 tires. This truck displays the engineering creativity and the “why not?” attitude of the car guys within the SVT group, and it’s a perfect example of a great idea gone incred-ibly right.

CARROLL HALL SHELbY (1923–2012)ThE MAN, ThE MAChINE, OuR FRIEND!

Carroll Shelby certainly was one of the greatest icons to influence our sport, hobby and racing cir-

cles in the annuals of automotive industry. If he wasn’t the Father of Performance, he certainly was one of the true mentors to those of us thinking, living, loving and breathing performance and racing.

We all know the final step in life is to pass over to the next unknown world. That in itself describes Car-roll Shelby very well, for he was a true pioneer. When that step comes, it leaves many saddened and longing for our missing friend. Certainly that is very true with Carroll. But I’m sure he would strongly suggest we limit our mourning and move on. Move on to bigger and better things. As he once said, “The greatest car in the world is the next one I make!” My guess is that he is already fine-tuning the Cobra-based chariot in which he now rides in that great race track in the heavens!

Join with us as we celebrate all things Shelby. Team Shelby Northeast leads the way in reminding us of the accomplishments of The Man. Shelby American is here to offer rock-solid proof of the performance potential of Shelby’s greatest ideas. Ford stands in the background, providing the platform on which Shelby worked his magic. You, the loyal Blue Oval and Shelby fans, trust them all. Your passion for the car is taken to ever-increasing heights with the horsepower and performance demonstrating the passion, further en-

suring the fact that this man will never be forgotten. His legacy lives on in the hearts, minds and souls of all those who own, drive or want to drive one of the machines designed by him.

The entire Carlisle Events family, led by both of the Miller families, wishes to express to all the fans, friends and certainly the family of Carroll Shelby our condo-lences and expressions of sympathy. We remember him fondly. He will be missed by many.

Join us for a moment of silence to remember an icon and great friend. Stop and briefly mourn his pass-ing. But let us more remember and celebrate with great joy the life, the accomplishments and the great achievements that Carroll left behind for us to ponder and wonder over. CELEbRATINg 10 YEARS By John M. Clor

This year at the Carlisle Ford Nationals, the Mach 1 Registry is celebrating its 10th anniversary. A proud

participant in the Ford Performance Group of enthusi-ast organizations as promoted on FordRacing.com, this club has made its national gathering at Carlisle an an-nual event. The Mach 1 Registry connects all interest-ed enthusiasts with an exclusive group of passionate and knowledgeable late-model Ford Mustang Mach 1 owners who can help you with everything there is to know about buying, maintaining and enhanc-

ing the 2003–04 Mustang Mach 1. David and Tamara Wagner launched the Mach1Registry.com website on May 22, 2002, when these modern, shaker-scoop equipped Mustangs became available to order from Ford dealers. It has grown from a small online owners list to 9,000-plus Mach 1 enthusiasts all over the world. Ownership of a Mustang Mach 1 is not a requirement to participate in the forums. And even though the club caters to the late-model 2003–04 versions of the Mach 1, owners of the earlier 1969 through 1978 Mach 1 Mustangs are welcome to participate. Ford Racing and the Carlisle Ford Nationals salute the Mach 1 Registry on its 10th birthday! We encourage all to stop by the club tent this weekend to say hi or ask about member-ship, and make sure you take time to enjoy the long line of Mach 1s on the showfield!

Read The Mustang Mach 1: “Everyman’s” Muscle Car on our website, written by automotive journalist John M. Clor. Clor has owned, raced, worked on or written about Fords and Mustangs for nearly 30 years. Today, he manages The Ford Performance Group enthusiast outreach program for Ford Racing as well as “Enthusi-ast” section content on the FordRacing.com website. He is also a columnist for Mustang Times, editor of SVT Enthusiast magazine, and wrote Mustang Dynasty.

tHe FoRD coNNectioN

Ford fans may think the primary focus of Ford Racing is simply to help racers who drive Fords go flat-out

faster to the finish line. But in reality, the main purpose behind Ford Racing is to help build the Ford brand in the hearts, minds and eyes of everyday consumers. Racing and winning on the professional stage shows off to the world a car company’s engineering expertise and product integrity — and thus, it helps influence sales. Just as important, racing success on the grass-roots level also drives brand awareness and purchase consideration with real-world car buyers.

Research proves that enthusiasts — including rac-ers, amateur sportsmen, car collectors, car club mem-bers and active brand loyalists — all serve to drive word-of-mouth sales by promoting a company’s im-age as they interact with fellow car buyers on their own turf. Enthusiasts also happen to enjoy modifying and personalizing their vehicles, which is why Ford Racing offers a full range of products to help serve cus-tomers who want more for their cars than what comes from the factory.

The annual Ford Racing Performance Parts catalog is like a “Christmas Wish Book” for Ford enthusiasts, offering the latest and greatest factory engineered hardware to help many of us make our performance dreams come true — and the 2012 version that is available at the Ford Racing trailer this weekend is no exception. But our catalog also serves as a very real physical link between Ford’s on-track racing opera-tions and its production-car engineering credibility.

“Track-bred = street cred” is more than just a slogan for the Ford Racing Performance Parts business. It’s as much a mantra for how we develop new products as it is a purchase-driver for Ford performance enthusiasts. More importantly, as our overall product guideline, it demonstrates Ford Racing’s commitment to enhanc-ing the ownership experience for you, our most pas-sionate of Ford fans.

But at Ford Racing, the connection to enthusiasts goes far beyond simply the selection, quality and val-ue of the parts in the FRPP catalog. It is truly a personal relationship that we work to grow and improve upon every day. As performance vehicle fans ourselves, we

well know that enthusiast owners are among the most vocal and visible of all Ford loyalists. Making perfor-mance products that satisfy their desires serves to activate them at the grassroots level as “disciples” who help us preach the Ford “gospel” to their peers. And that kind of direct third-party endorsement sends a very influential message to our prospective customers.

That’s why we think it’s important you know that — like you — the people who work at Ford Racing also “bleed Ford blue.” From our car-guy managers to the hot-rod engineers to the motorhead marketers, even the tech-heads on the Ford Performance Info Line — you’ve gotta “love it, know it, and show it” around here to be successful.

Easy to be an enthusiastLast year, Ford Racing added an entire “Enthusi-

asts” section to its recently revamped FordRacing.com web site, giving a new face and place for its Ford Performance Group enthusiast outreach program, a unique customer interface launched by Ford Racing in 2006. That move was designed to make it easier for fans to find and enjoy the kind of unique Ford en-thusiast, club, event, and specialty car content that has made the site a true virtual connection between Ford Motor Company and its legion of loyalists. From special coverage of major Ford and club events, such as Carlisle Ford Nationals, to unique stories from Ford fans, to official Ford build info on many of today’s most collectible performance Fords, the new “Enthusiasts” section of FordRacing.com offers content that you simply can’t find anywhere else.

Fueled by the unequaled popularity of the Mustang, it’s a fact that there are far more Ford-based vehicle clubs than any other automotive marque. Instead of building cars as mere appliances, like many of the im-port brands, Ford has a heritage of building cars and trucks that connect with owners on an emotional level. Such a connection between car and owner has enabled Ford to amass a veritable army of loyal enthusiasts over the years that is the envy of every other automaker on the planet. So now you can see why some import manufacturers are asking their product teams to devise cars that evoke more of an emotional connection with

FORD ‘gOES FURTHER’ TO POWER UP CONNECTION WITH ENTHUSIASTSBy John M. Clor / Ford Racing

owners, and why other carmakers are now hard at work devising marketing “brand disciple” strategies of their own. That automotive passion Ford fans are known for is the very reason behind the annual celebration of the Ford brand we’re enjoying this weekend in Carlisle!

Honest emotional connectionsBut owner loyalty isn’t something the company

takes for granted. In fact, Ford is working harder than ever to “Go further” for our customers. In today’s world, we know that consumers don’t particularly like being “sold to” and don’t entirely trust what they hear about a product from big corporations or manufacturers’ ads. More and more, people are putting their purchasing faith in personal recommendations from their friends, neighbors, coworkers and acquaintances — and that’s precisely where we as Ford loyalists can play a major role in asking your non-Ford peers to “Drive One.”

To that end, Ford Racing has spearheaded several initiatives designed specifically to help Ford Motor Company build on our relationship with loyalists, not the least of which is our enthusiast outreach program. Using an umbrella approach, we created the Ford Per-formance Group of enthusiast organizations — a col-lection of independent clubs whose members can en-joy a variety of benefits centered on the establishment of a Ford-based information clearinghouse. Thanks to all those years of working with enthusiasts at the grassroots level, Ford Racing is able to offer these clubs what they had told us they wanted the most — a sustainable connection with the company.

Anchoring the program is that “Enthusiast” section of the FordRacing.com web site, backed by a dedicated team tasked to build Ford’s relationship with its past, present and future performance customers. Its goal is to help promote Ford-based clubs and their activities, centralize the company’s contact with, and promotion for, the myriad Ford-centered events across the coun-try each year, and provide a Web showcase for how performance vehicle ownership opens the door to an entire Ford enthusiast lifestyle — all in one place.

Ford Racing has institutionalized this connection with Ford enthusiast clubs as part of our core busi-ness, primarily because we are enthusiasts too! We know that our friends and neighbors recognize us as being car-savvy, and as opinion leaders we don’t mind sharing our thoughts when car shoppers seek us out to get advice. We like to show off our performance or classic Ford because we don’t just drive it from Point A to Point B — we LOVE it and openly show our affection for it in public. The other part of our outreach effort in-volves making face-to-face connections — one show, one club, and even one person at a time. It’s why you can see our products and/or talk to Ford Racing staff-ers in person at automotive events across the country.

Oh sure, a lot of other car companies put marketing efforts into racing and enthusiast events for that same

reason. The influence of you, the enthusiast owner, has even attracted other Ford groups — both inside the company and via our agencies — to look at enthusi-ast marketing programs of their own. While those may come and go, Ford Racing has built a viable connec-tion with our fans, racers and enthusiasts as a part of what we do each day.

As simple as 1-2-3Just like Ford’s 1-2-3 finish at Le Mans in 1966, Ford

Racing’s got an impossible-to-beat 1-2-3 enthusiast program at work for you to utilize! 1.) is our own En-thusiast web space on FordRacing.com, with content for, by, and about YOU! 2.) is our weekly “Fast News From Ford Racing” e-newsletter that we send out to more than 400,000 Ford fans, plus the daily updates you’ll find on our Ford Racing Facebook page. And 3.) is our toll-free 1-800-FORD-788 Ford Performance Info Center and Ford Racing Tech Line, where you can get vehicle, product, club and event information — and even expert technical advice.

Together, they provide the only service of its kind offered by any of the major automakers. The fact is, no other carmaker promotes their enthusiast clubs this directly, communicates with fans this consistently, nor offers their loyal performance customers this kind of direct, toll-free assistance line to the factory.

If you appreciate the idea that Ford has put into place a program to stay connected with you as a Ford performance enthusiast, then we suggest that you ful-ly employ and enjoy this unique relationship. For start-ers, you should bookmark www.FordRacing.com and sign up for our weekly Fast News e-newsletter, where you’ll get the inside story on what’s happening in the world of Ford performance. Then check out our “En-thusiast” section on the site and visit it regularly. You should also become friends on our Facebook page. And don’t hesitate to call the Ford Performance Info Center (1-800-FORD-788) if you have a question about past or present performance Fords, want to share an idea about Ford products you’d like to see, or need to tap into the experts on the Ford Racing Tech Line. And don’t forget to ask about our special Ford enthusiast merchandise available through our Info Center via www.FordShowParts.com.

Finally, by all means keep getting out there to en-joy your performance Ford! Head out to the racetrack and cheer on your favorite Ford vehicle. Find a club and attend a meeting, a car show, cruise, or any driv-ing or racing event — and discover the fun and all the friendly people involved in the world of Ford perfor-mance — just like you experiencing here every year at the Carlisle Ford Nationals. Hopefully, we’ll all be “Driving Ford Passion” with Ford Racing and its Ford Performance Group of enthusiast organizations for many more years to come!

HEACOCK••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••Have you ever wondered what collector car insur-

ance is all about? It’s simple, “passion.” Heacock Classic Insurance knows that collector cars receive better care and are driven less than the family vehicle, therefore, classic car insurance rates are lowered. Their goal is to offer a custom, low-cost program designed to fit your needs. Collector car insurance from Heacock Classic provides “Agreed Value” coverage, full coverage dur-ing restoration, coverage for modifications, and your right to choose your own repair shop if your car is damaged. You also get to choose zero deductible and automatically get $50,000 coverage for 30 days when you purchase a new classic car. After you request a quote, a status report is usually ready within 24 hours. Then, they will contact you to review it and hopefully activate your new insurance policy. It’s simple, easy and the best way to properly protect your investment. Call today at 800-678-5183 or online at www.Heacock Classic.com

MEgUIAR’S• •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••For over 100 years, Meguiar’s has shared its passion

and pride for the car hobby and for making cars ap-pear “show car perfect.” They provide quality products for every surface of your vehicle — inside and out. Meguiar’s Customer Care Center is available six days a week to answer any car care questions you have, at 800-347-5700. Or join the discussion on Facebook or their online discussion forum at www.meguiarsonline.com. ”People who love cars love Meguiar’s.”

ROCK AUTO••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••RockAuto ships thousands of auto parts from more

than 200 manufacturers to customers on every con-tinent except Antarctica — including APO/FPO ad-dresses. The RockAuto catalog is updated daily with mechanical parts such as brake pads and shock ab-sorbers, body parts such as bumpers and mirrors, in-terior trim like door handles and carpets, and major assemblies like steering gears, CV axles, engine long blocks, and complete transmissions. There are no me-chanics on staff (RockAuto is a store, not a repair shop), but service manuals are available to help customers learn how to perform a repair. The RockAuto catalog is expanding constantly. Someday, it may be possible to build an entire car using parts from RockAuto!

PeRsoNAl iNteRest: mAURY’s gt 350

How many cars are in your garage currently? How many cars have you owned? What about how

many cars you think you’ll own in your lifetime? OK, enough with the questions, because the facts look something like this: The average family owns 2.28 cars at any given time, and various reports online state that the average person will own somewhere between nine and 15 cars in their lifetime. In addition, statistics show that people tend to sell or trade in a car on aver-age when it’s 4½ years old with just 41,000 miles on it. Those stats will be a head-scratcher by the time we're done here, because one nearly 80-year old man, while having owned a few cars in his lifetime, is still very much active with one he's owned since 1967.

Daily driver becomes a classicIn the great state of North Carolina and in the town

of Ocean Isle Beach, near Wilmington, lives Maury Longsworth. Maury is a retired district sales man-ager from Honeywell Information Systems, where he worked, according to him, for at least 35 years.

Along with his work at Honeywell, Maury is a car buff and is the proud (longtime) owner of a ’67 Shelby GT350 — which he purchased new upon its release to the public — and he and his car are here at Carlisle this weekend. With the great Shelby display positioned near Building Y, the brand is already well-represented, but with Maury's car on-site, it makes his ride an “old friend” among strangers.

“I bought this car on my 35th birthday in 1967,” Maury said. “At the time, I had my eyes on two differ-ent cars, a Porsche 911 and a Shelby Cobra, but with three kids and a wife, I got to thinking about how I was going to get them around. At that point, I bought the Shelby, and 93,000 miles later, I still have it.”

For the longest time, the Shelby was Maury’s daily driver and it got him to and from the office for many years. At one point in the ’80s, Maury decided it was time to begin the restoration process on the Shelby. Though it’s been a long and winding road, the project, which began in 1987, is now complete, thanks in part to a good friend, John Temple, from Georgia.

“I met John sometime back when I was thinking about buying a GT500,” Maury said. “While trying to buy the GT, I wasn’t fully comfortable with the process and at the same time, saw an ad for a Legend Mus-tang. I called the number, John was on the other end, I bought the car and a friendship was forged."

The road to restorationIn addition to having his gem of a Ford still on the

road today, Maury likes to get under the hood and

tinker with its pieces and parts. In fact, the motor has been rebuilt recently, with Maury getting under the hood himself.

“I took out the engine and transmission, stripped it down, did some of the paint work and put it all back together,” he said. “I needed some help along the way, but we got the job done and the car looks and runs great. I got a great feeling of accomplishment in doing the work that I did because I look at the hobby as very satisfying. You certainly get out of it what you put into it and then some.”

A unique vehicle worth sharingAs car collectors go, Maury appreciates his Shelby

so much that he shows it at events like Carlisle and is surprised at the attention it gets. “I didn’t expect the car to be all that unique when I bought it in 1967, but that is how it has turned out.”

Maury is a true “car guy” based on his interests and hobby. In addition to what he has done and is cur-rently doing, Maury owns a few other rides that may turn some heads. Along with his 2007 Legend Mus-tang and ’67 Shelby, Maury owns a ’96 Thunderbird, ’39 Ford four-door convertible and an ’05 F-150 truck, which he frequently uses to get the aforementioned cars from point A to point B. As Maury says, “I’m a de-voted Ford person to the core.”

So what’s next for Maury and his 1967 Shelby GT350? According to him, he does not intend on slow-ing down. There are more roads to drive, more shows to attend and more work to be done. By the way, Mau-ry turns 80 in July, and he says his health is good. He knows that working on cars now is a race to the fin-ish, but he’s ready for the challenge, having taken on a new restoration project of a Porsche 914 for his son.

Finally, if you are wondering, Maury paid $4,150 for the car in 1967. Needless to say, it’s value in 2012 has dramatically and exponentially increased.

YELLOW MuSTANG REGISTRYwww.YellowMustangRegistry.comVehicles: Yellow Mustangs of all years

The Yellow Mustang Registry has attended since 2002 when they had 31 cars registered. In 2004, they had 51 yellow Mustangs and were given a dedicated parking area on the NPD Showfield. They’ve been lighting up the NPD Showfield with their traveling sunshine ever since (even during some of the rainy years, too). Each region holds several mini-gatherings every year, and they love to cruise together in long lines of yellow. “It’s is amazing how many bystanders point, stop their cars to snap a pic with the phone or just gaze in awe of that many yellow cars in a row (let alone all Mustangs).”
