Co-op and career opportunitiescarleton.ca/co-op
The majority of our undergraduate programs include a co-operative education option (known as “co-op”) that provides you with the opportunity to gain full-time, paid employment related to your academic program. Study terms are alternated with paid periods of work in real job situations.
Some benefits of participating in the co-op program:
■ Put theory into practice and solve real world problems in your field of study
■ Develop professional skills that employers are looking for
■ Build a network of industry contacts ■ Explore different career environments to
find your best fit ■ Earn money to help with tuition costs
Built over time, strong connections in the high-tech sector, and with local industry leaders and research scientists, have helped us to create many valuable work opportunities for students.
The Co-operative Education Office supports students with their job search, co-ordinates the hiring process and develops connections with potential employers. You can apply to the co-op program when you apply for your degree program at Carleton, or you can apply later in your studies (typically at the end of first or second year). To be eligible, you must be a full-time student with a specified minimum grade point average. Please note that certain programs also require prerequisite courses.
For details on eligibility and how to apply for a co-op program, please visit our website: carleton.ca/co-op
Just a small selection of Carleton’s co-op employers:

Salaries range from minimum wage ($14/hour) to $30/hour depending on the program. Salary averages are outlined on our website per field of study.
Other work-study options Many programs include a work-study component such as a practicum, field placement, field course, apprenticeship or research placement. Carleton also offers a new International Internship Program that connects students in all disciplines with internships worldwide for academic credit.

Academic performance in your previous studies is the main determining factor for admission to Carleton’s undergraduate degree programs. Secondary school graduation is the typical level required for admission to the first year of an undergraduate program. In some cases, you will also be required to present specific courses (prerequisites).
We recognize and accept national qualifications from most countries. Please visit: carleton.ca/international to see the requirements for your particular country or education system.
You will need to present: ■ Transcripts from all of your high school
and any post-secondary studies. Through the admissions portal in Carleton 360 (360.carleton.ca) you will be able to view any documents necessary for your application assessment. You can also upload a .pdf version of any requested documents directly to your application. If official documents are needed to confirm your offer of admission, they can be sent directly from the institution to Carleton University Admissions Services (see back cover for address). If you are in your final year of high school, you should submit mid-year or predicted results (in both the original language and translated into English by a certified translator).
■ Most international students will also have to submit an English language test score (see page 11 for details)

From: Peru
When I added my co-op option, I discovered so many different paths that I could take once I finish my studies. I have worked in three different government departments throughout my co-op. In each one of them, I have met incredible people that have mentored me and have taught me so much. I also developed different skills that will help in my future studies and employment.
At Carleton, you will find that the opportunities you can get are endless. Most importantly, you are within a community that supports you and wants to help you fulfill all your dreams.

English language requirementsFor admission, you will need to demonstrate that your knowledge and use of English are strong enough for studies in an English language university.
You can do this by: ■ Demonstrating that you have studied for the last

■ Submitting an English as a Second Language (ESL) test result
Depending on the score achieved, you may receive:
1. Admission with no ESL requirement: Begin your full-time undergraduate degree studies
2. Admission with an ESL requirement: Carleton will admit you to your degree program with the requirement that you complete up to three English language classes during your first terms of study
You do not have to apply for the English language classes—an offer of admission will automatically include an ESL requirement if your language score falls in the range outlined in table 2.

From: China
Carleton offers a lot of strategies to help international students succeed. I really benefited from the English as a Second Language courses. They not only helped me improve my English, but I could enter my program of study right away. I learned a lot about writing essays and because of the small classes, it was effortless to make good friends. You may find that some of them come from the same country as you!
If I could talk to myself a year before I came to Carleton, I would say: “You made the correct choice and will enjoy your time at the university!”
Please note that the following programs are not available for entry with an ESL requirement:
■ Architectural Studies ■ Health Sciences ■ Humanities ■ Information Technology ■ Industrial Design ■ International Business ■ Journalism ■ Journalism and Humanities ■ Media Production and Design ■ Public Affairs and Policy Management
If your language test score falls below the ranges listed in table 2, or you do not submit a language test, you will not be eligible for an offer of admission. You can retake a language test and submit a higher score to be considered for admission.

From: Nigeria and Canada I lived in residence my first year and I would advise all students coming to Carleton for first year to live in residence. Trust me. My first friends were from residence—they were my podmates because I lived in res with five other people in a pod (suite). It was amazing. You do your own laundry and cleaning of course, but the food and everything else is covered. It’s much easier because you don’t have to think about rent or doing your own grocery shopping. You can just focus on school, your clubs and going to the gym. Everyone should live in res for first year because that’s how you get to know everyone and find your way around.

The Canadian people here are so kind and super friendly. That impressed me a lot. They often say ‘thank you’ or ‘sorry’ for the smallest thing, so I think that is a really good custom, and I learned from that.
If I have the chance to stay here and work, this would be fantastic because, in my opinion, Canada is one of the best places to live in the world. I love the people here, they are nice. I love the weather. I love the food. Also, Canada ranks very high in modern technology.
