  • PRESIDENTs OF THE BCSS monash university

    BCSS PRESIDENTS WELCOMEDear BCSS Family,

On behalf of the Business and Commerce Students Society (BCSS), it is my sincere pleasure to welcome you all to 2015 with the BCSS.

Since 1994, the BCSS has accommodated Monash University students from both Clayton and Caulfield with a stepping-stone to broaden their horizons on both a professional and social level. Through the funda-mental approach of branching out the BCSS provides each and every student with the opportunity and insight to advance their careers. Com-plimentary to this, the BCSS offers a diverse range of social events and experiences, which enables students to create new friendships and en-sure that every students transition into university life is both welcoming and enjoyable. It is our goal that the professional opportunities, career advancements and lifelong friendships created as a result of branch-ing out through the BCSS, will provide each and every member with the chance to succeed while they are here, but also for life and work beyond Monash University.

Through my personal experience of branching out to the BCSS, I have seen the formation of lifelong friendships and memories, as well as en-joying a rewarding and balanced university life. It is through the BCSS and its associated opportunities, that my future is indeed brighter. In such a competitive yet rewarding field of study, it can often become quite daunting coordinating the right path that will suit your individual preferences. Here at the BCSS we strive to make this process more straightforward and manageable for students. Through our various pro-fessional events, networking opportunities, weekly newsletters and so-cial events, we provide the necessary direction and support for each member to assist in making informed decisions as well as creating a strong foundation both professionally and socially. We believe each and every student has unlimited potential to become outstanding business-men and women that will model future generations.

As the newest members of the BCSS family, I believe that you will quickly realize that we are a dedicated, close-knit, and a supportive family comprised of remarkably caring people, each eager to share his or her own unique talents, interests, perspectives, and backgrounds. We are excited and honoured to extend our family in 2015 to over 2000 members across both the Clayton and Caulfield Monash University Campuses. The careers guide for 2015 is a testament to this. Such an invaluable publication that offers such vast information and guidance for students is dependent on countless hours of dedication and devotion. This guide could not have been produced without the sheer hard work and commitment constructed by the BCSS and CSS publication and professional teams. I would like to commend in particular Gwen Young, Andrew Longo, Viv Dinh for their many laboured hours, which has ena-bled each and every member to enjoy such a rewarding Careers Guide!

Indeed, 2015 is shaping up to be an incredible year for the BCSS and we aspire each and every member to be part of the tremendous success every step of the way. I wish you all the best in your future endeavours and hope to see you at our many social and professional events in 2015, branching out to a brighter future.

    Yours Sincerely,James Smith

  • profile:

Name: Michelle YiiCourse studied: Bachelor of Commerce with Hon-ours in FinanceRole at KPMG: Adviser in Private Enterprise (PE)Hobbies: Swimming, travelling, trying new eateries, outdoor adventure activities, ca- fe-hunting, being involved at church

    why did you choose kpmg:

KPMG is a highly reputable firm which of- fers many exciting career opportunities. It was during my in-terview with a Partner in Private Enterprise that con-firmed to me that KPMG would be a great fit for me. I was drawn to the supportive and driven culture, and the knowledge that I would work alongside oth-er passionate individuals with great work ethics.

What do you do in your department

& why did you choose it?

PE serves the middle market sector, with the cli-entele base primarily comprising of high net worth individuals, private companies and family business-es. PE is a very unique division because it offers an expan- sive range of services to our clients. There- fore, working in this division enables high level job scope, task variety and broad skill development. As an Adviser in the tax and accounting group within PE, I am trusted with a great degree of responsibili-ty, and am able to develop a strong grounding in tax compliance and financial accounting fundamentals.

Describe a typical day in the office:

In my role as an Adviser, I tend to spend most of my time in the office and having a great level of interac-tion with my team. However, my days are far from stock-standard; theres always an element of unex- pectedness, and of course, the challenge of always managing multiple jobs concurrently.

How did you go about finding a place to work after graduating?

I was fortunate enough to receive a gradu- ate offer upon completion of my vacation work, and enjoyed my time enough to come back! Nevertheless, ex-perience has taught me that job hunting is a time-in-tensive process, so being committed to the task is crucial. I dedicated a lot of my efforts to exploring the opportunities available and finding both a firm and service line that could offer what I was searching for in a career.

How did you find the transition from university to full-time work?

Being honest, the jump to full-time work is quite large and often understated. After four (enjoyable) years at university, I felt ready for a change in pace of lifestyle, so fortunately, it was a very exciting transition for me. Initially the early mornings and having to concentrate for longer periods than a 2 hour lecture were a shock to the system. But I can gladly say that these con-straints were quickly overcome, and the payoff of a full-time work lifestyle made the transition quite nat-ural.

Any tips for students applying for graduate or internship positions?

    1) Do your research, attend relevant events, network, ask questions. The recruitment process is about matching individuals and job opportunities, and a deep understanding of what each service line has to offer and the culture of the workplace will position you better to make the right connection.2) Quality over quantity. One strong appli- cation will get you much further than many diluted ones.3) Dedicate plenty of time. This is an investment in your career worth making.

  • Lazard, the key to your future.

    Leadership.

    The Individual.

    Partnership.

    Courage.

    Wisdom.

  • STRONG TRACK RECORD

Lazard is one of the worlds preeminent financial ad-visory and asset management firms. Listed on the NYSE, it has origins dating back to 1848 and oper-ates from 43 cities across 27 countries. In Australia, Lazard is a leading M&A advisor with particular ex-pertise in large and complex transactions. Lazard has advised on some of the largest M&A deals in Australian history and is committed to the Australian marketplace.

    WHAt we look for

Lazard strongly believes that the quality of the ser-vices it provides is above all defined by the indi-viduals who deliver them. Lazard invests significant time and energy in finding the right people to join its businesses and actively seeks out high-cali-bre, multi-talented and confident individuals who can bring enthusiasm and new perspectives to our organisation. The firm recruits from all academic disciplines. At Lazard, those who have completed studies in business and economics thrive alongside classicists, mathematicians and linguists. What they share are exceptional analytical and communication skills as well as outstanding intellect, enterprise, en-ergy and commitment.

WHAt we can offer OUR GRADUates

The continuing uncertainty of global financial markets has brought into focus companies attention on the quality and unbiased nature of financial advice they receive from investment banks and advisory houses. Given the independent nature of the advice Lazard provides to its clients, Lazard graduates have the op-portunity to gain unprecedented experience that is arguably unmatched against that available at bulge bracket investment banks and smaller boutique ad-visory houses.

With its respected position in the market and asso-ciation with numerous blue chip clients, the firm gen-erates significant deal flow that ensures graduates are continually challenged and stimulated. Small deal teams and a non-hierarchical organisational structure allow graduates to work directly with some of the most experienced advisors in the Australian market-place and ensures that graduates are not restricted to the often monotonous and inconsequential tasks that are so frequently associated with other invest-ment banks and advisory houses. Lazards graduates have a unique opportunity to develop their skills in this environment.

The network of support provided by the firm creates the foundations for extensive personal and career development, both domestically and internationally, and the ability to develop a robust and broad skill set within the M&A and advisory industry.
