+Introduction

My name is Sarah Riley and I am a senior health science major at Clemson with a concentration in pre-professional health

I am graduating in December

My ONET profile had top scores in social, investigative, and conventional respectively

Social and investigative combine to create a great career in the health field, specifically medicine

Goal: to go to medical school and become a doctor

+History of Medicine

Medicine has been dated back to 8000BC starting with prehistoric medicine

The Stone Age helped people identify which plants to eat, and in the process also found some of the healing effects as well

This is called Herbal Medicine and is the earliest known form of medicine

The earliest surgeries have been dated back to 2000BC

Hippocratic Oath was developed in the 4th century BC Formed by Hippocrates who is also called the father of

medicine

I want to one day be a pediatric intensivist

+The dream:

To be a pediatric intensivist

They serve and care for critically ill children in a hospital setting

Usually these are the kids with the most serious injuries or complications and many specialties are usually consulted

The intensivist serves as the coordinating physician for all the different specialties and doctors the child will need to see

It is a highly specialized career and so they are usually only found in major hospital or Children's hospitals

The average salary is $208.515

Medical school

Certified in pediatric critical care

It is a 3 year fellowship after pediatric residency

+Why I am qualified:

This is the perfect career that combines both social and investigative aspects

I get to work with children which I am passionate about and have great experience working with them from being a camp counselor to a YoungLife leader

I love the excitement of the intensive care unit and I am good under pressure

I have a passion for medicine and anatomy and studying how the body works

I love working with people and I really deeply care about them; I would get to help patients and families by not only saving their life but also having an important counseling aspect as well

Having been a lifeguard trained in CPR and first aid, I feel I am good under pressure and can utilize my skills to help save lives

I am re-taking the MCAT in July

I plan to apply early acceptance to University of South Carolina at Greenville Medical School

I have taken all the necessary classes

There is no minimum GPA or MCAT score and they really emphasize the whole person

I am hoping to do my internship at GHS to help me get my foot in the door even more

I have already been on a tour and sat down with the financial aid director to talk about various payment options

+Back-up plan:

I plan to take the Spring semester off if I don’t get into medical school and apply for graduate school

I would apply for Vanderbilt graduate school to get a Masters in Public Health

The deadline for that application is in March so I will need to take the GRE in December (after I have already heard about medical school)

There is also an online program at East Tennessee University that is online that I could start in the fall of 2016 as well
