Happiness is not gett ing

Happiness is gett ing

No, I ’m not talking about your height

Only then wil l you feel better in body and soul.

PHASTAR Floats another boat for Davis Students

Davis A & M is gett ing students up -to date about the fast growing industry and use of drones.

On November 29 Marcus Jackson, Naomi Hunt and Quinton Oliver got a chance to see what drones can do. Accompanied by Captain Drew Ferguson and Mr. Amil l Rivera , the students experimented with an autopilot drone outside of the school. This drone is used by policemen and f iref ighters to gather information and document situ -at ions. It has a 1080p gyroscope camera al lowing its navigators to access informa-t ion they could not possible gather at the

I ’m f inished brushing my teeth. I ’m coming

down the stairs. I ’m ready for my bedtime

story. Does anybody care?

I ’m standing in my p.j.’s My bunny s l ippers

on But Ma and Pa are watching TV I think

there’s something wrong.

Why is mommy crying, pa? She’s point ing

at the screen. It ’s l ike she knows them people

People I ’ve never seen.

And why does daddy look so made? Mommy,

do you know? He keeps on rubbing the side of

his head And walking to and fro

What is this TV show? And now I start to

feel real weird My insides gett ing heavy I yel l

at mommy one more t ime.

Daddy are you forgett ing? Mama slowly

turns to me Her face f ight ing the tears She cut

the TV of f r ight quick.

She kneels and pulls me near Why is daddy

leaving the room? Why did he s lam the door?

Mommy searches for her words. In the matted

carpet f loor.

Honey, something bad has happened. We

didn’t want you to see. But we just saw a man

get shot Right on our colored TV.

Why would someone shoot that man? You

both said guns were not good. Did the man

steal or rob someone? Was he not doing what

he should?

Then I feel my mama’s anger The straight

st i f f of her back. No, she hissed through her

teeth. Police shot him ‘cuz he was black.

I t i lt my head with quest ion As daddy

enters st i l l blue But my skin’s dark just l ike

the man’s Does that mean I ’l l die too?

Ma and Pa stare at each other Blank, scared

looks on the front of their heads. Neither of

them could say a word As I imagine myself….

dead.

Come Visit with Us

The student advisory group sponsored by Ms. Maureen Vogel helped Davis A&M get into the holiday spir it when the orga -nized the “Sneaky Snowf lake” act iv ity. Like a “Secret Santa” event , students picked a name of someone to surprise with a secret gi f t in t ime for the holidays.

The weather has turned and dressing for the weather, t imely pickup and drop of fs are more important than ever.

Our lakeside locat ion wil l result in constant winds that can drive apparent temperatures down. As an alumni of the old Davis Aviat ion School, I speak from personal experience when I say that the wind downtown is a force to be reckoned with.

In the morning, there are no personnel avai lable to monitor students prior to 7:45am; breakfast is served through 8:10am.

In the af ternoon, students are out of c lass promptly at 3:15; and can wait inside the building unti l 3:30.

MEET THE CREW:Mr. Haggard and Ms. Steinbeck

Mr. Erik Haggard thinks of Davis as the school that has everything anyone could want and more. He came here af ter he looked up the Cleveland Metropolitan School system and found a dif ferent kind of school. Before coming to Davis, Mr. Haggard worked in the math department of CSU. He decided to come to Davis af ter his f irst s it down conversat ion with Principal Jones. Mr. Haggard, who went to Strongs -vi l le High, hopes to give students as many opportunit ies for learning and success as possible. He is proud of al l the students who made the decis ion to this school.

What does Mr. Haggard do when he f irst gets home? He changes c lothes and star ts making dinner.

Ms. Lauren Steinbeck teaches English and Freshman Seminar at Davis A&M. Ms. Steinbeck graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in Warren, Ohio. Before coming to Davis, Ms. Steinbeck worked at a high school outside of Washington D.C. which had four thousand students. Though she was nervous on her f irst day of school she l ikes this school a lot because, she said, “The building is beauti ful and the kids are real ly nice.”

Ms. Steinbeck hopes that everyone does real ly well this year and that kids keep enroll ing here.

The f irst thing Ms. Steinbeck does when she gets home is to play with her dogs.
