AIM has played a major role in Norwegian aviation industry since 1916. It used to be a part of the Norwegian Defence Logistics Organisation (NDLO) at Kjeller until December 15th 2011, at which time the organisation was transformed into a state enterprise. The driving force for the transformation was to enable AIM to compete in the international markets for new contracts and projects related to new systems and to be at the heart of future PBL concepts and support.

AIM has extensive capabilities in the areas of repair, overhaul, modification and testing of components for military aircraft and helicopters, and specializes in recycling of spare parts. The main Maintenance, Repair, Overhaul (MRO) and support capabilities at AIM can be summarised as:

AIM is located at Kjeller, just outside Oslo, at one of the world’s oldest operational air bases. In addition, AIM has an operational unit at the military air base at Rygge, south of Oslo.

AIM utilises a Continuous Improvement process (CI) as part of our commitment to Quality Assurance (QA) in an effort to improve products, services, or processes. All of our internal CI initiatives follow “Lean” principles, in that they seek to achieve, as a minimum, "incremental" improvements over time or "significant" improvements in one hit. All of our improvements are monitored and measured to ensure that they are achieving the expected and desired results. Delivery (customer valued) processes are constantly evaluated and improved in the light of their efficiency, effectiveness, cost benefit, performance improvement and flexibility.

The Engineering Department is AIM’s technical authority. AIM designs and develops parts, repairs, tools, procedures and processes as necessary based on the requirements and specifications from Customers. All work is traceable i.a.w the requirements given in AS9100. The Engineering Department maintains a staff of Engineers skilled in the following disciplines:

• Avionics, Airframe and system engineering, troubleshooting, modifications and upgrades within limitations, such as where major repairs require approval from Customers and/or OEMs.• Aircraft structural repair/modification design within limitations such as where major repairs require approval from Customers and/or OEMs.• Material and Parts Substitutions.• 3Dimentional (3D) Computed Aided Design (CAD)• Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA)• Fluid dynamics

Within the Helicopter Department AIM has highly skilled technicians in the following trades: Avionic, Mechanical and Sheet Metal Work. AIM also operates a very effective apprenticeship scheme.

AIM undertake: scheduled phase inspections, unscheduled maintenance and repairs, modifications and Inspect Repair As Necessary (IRAN) depot level maintenance on the Royal Norwegian Air Force Sea King helicopters.

One of our current modification programmes is the Sea King 2020 project, which is an Avionic systems update to ensure aircraft availability until the new AW101 NAWSARH is in service.

The helicopter department also provides deployed maintenance teams that assist the Norwegian SAR bases to deliver the highest possible level of readiness for Sea King operations.

Fixed Wing Aircraft Maintenance CapabilitiesAIM has significant experience performing depot-level maintenance, modifications, upgrades, and phase inspections for the RNoAF fleet of F-16 Fighter Aircraft. To support the phase inspections, we utilize “in-house” maintenance workshops, including sheet metal, non-destructive inspection, avionics, engine shop, metals technology, egress, and fuel systems maintenance. The phase inspections normally occur at 300 flying hour intervals.

During the phase inspections we take an in-depth look at the entire aircraft by performing thorough inspections, repairs and depot-level maintenance of each F-16. When considering the content of each phase inspection, additional time is allocated for any additional maintenance that may be required, such as: Time Compliance Technical Orders (TCTOs), modifications, and upgrades to ensure efficiency, thoroughness, and a timely turnaround of each aircraft.

The Engine and Component department has MRO experience on engines and components for the F-16 fighter, Sea King helicopter, P3 Orion, C130 Hercules, Bell 412 helicopter and NH90 Helicopter. Additionally the Company undertakes maintenance of a variety of Ground Radars. AIM are currently pursuing the establishment of an F-35 fighter F135 engine depot and are establishing an AgustaWestland AW101 NAWSARH component and engine maintenance capability.

The department has about 9.000 sq m/96.840 sq ft workshop space at Kjeller and Rygge with six different engine test cells and access to the runway on both bases. Examples of the AIM engine MRO and test facilities are:

The Hydraulic Workshop has a work area of 1.200 sq m/12.900 sq ft and has the following capabilities:• MRO for the F-16 Integrated Servo Actuator (ISA)• MRO for the rescue hoist for the Sea King, C130 Hercules and Lynx• MRO for pumps, valves and cylinders for the F-16, Sea King, P3 Orion, DA20, Bell 412 and Lynx. AIM has a 93 sq m /1000 sq ft specialized workshop for maintenance, repairs and overhaul of flexible fuel cells.

The shop is equipped with special equipment and provides services, such as: fuel cell inspection, leak detection testing, vulcanize patch repairs, cleaning, preservation and packaging.

The workshop also perform inspection, pressure test and repair of emergency flotation equipment. All work is carried out in accordance with the technical procedures from the OEMs and the local Airworthiness Authority.

AIM has a 185 sq m/2.000 sq ft, state-of-the-art paint shop facility. The facility contains several paint cabins and an 85 sq m/900 sq ft hangar that is temperature and humidity controlled. The hangar has linear extraction and filtered exhaust system, and is designed to perform complete paint jobs on fighter jets and helicopters. Heat comes from a hot water exchanger heated using renewable energy sources.

Our Paint services include: • Plastic Media Blasting. PMB• Chemical Paint Removal • Scuff, Sand and Paint of Complete Aircrafts and components. • Application of all conventional sprayed paint systems (-acrylic-epoxy-polyurethane and waterborne refinishing systems-Non Chromatic Paint) • Application of Specialty Coatings e.g. Elastomeric, Anti-Static and Rain Erosion.• Removal of FMS-3049 from the F-16 engine inlet duct using PMB. AIM is set up with Special equipment for Extracting/ Recycling of Plastic Media • Spraying the FMS-3049 Coating in the F-16 engine inlet duct. Our facility is equipped to provide adequate ventilation with correct temperature and relative humidity. • Production of stencils for markings and insignias • Painting of small parts and ground equipment Paint Shop Capabilities

PMB is selected as the main paint removal method by AIM because the process provides for rapid, economic, safe removal of coatings without using toxic chemical strippers or mechanical abrasion methods. Also, recycling of the used plastic media has economic and environmental benefits, it requires minimal training and meet state regulations.

The European Union regulations prevent Chrome 6 paint from being used after 2016 because serious health issues have occurred as a result of working with Chrome 6 paint. AIM helped develop a new paint to replace the specified radar-absorbing material and reduce the hazard. The paint was accepted by RNoAF, and AIM has certifications for this products. The RNoAF has tested the coating and analyzed it. An RNoAF report states that test results show the new coating is better than the previous used.

Radar-Absorbing Material (RAM): AIM Norway has tooling, equipment and an experienced personnel available to remove, install, and repair the different types of RAM Coating.

Structural Workshop and Equipment CapabilitiesThe structural workshop consists of a 290 sq m/3.120 sq ft main room, a 122 sq m/1.310 sq ft secondary room for Hi-noise work and a 13 sq m/140 sq ft adhesive mixing room. Fully equipped with personal tool trollies as well as structural tools for up to 100 Structural workers in addition to different types of metal forming, drilling and cutting machines.AIM has the following Structural capability:• Structural MRO experience on the majority of all Military aircrafts and helicopters operated by RNoAF, both at component level in the Structural workshop, in the Aircraft hangars at Kjeller Depot and on different sites in Norway and abroad.• In depth experience with F-16 fuselage life extension programs, as well as prototyping of new repair procedures, tool and equipment development for both repair and life extension.

• AMS-2770 Class-2 approved source for heat-treating aircraft aluminium • Broad experience on all type of Aircraft repairs both on heavy structures of aluminium, steel and titanium and on thin sheet-metal and semi metal/composite construction like Sea-King and Bell-412• Manufacturing prototyping and development capability for aircraft parts and equipment not limited to metal alone, development prototyping and manufacturing is normally executed in close cooperation with customer Engineering dep. and end-user utilizing the experience and capability of the different workshops in AIM • Measuring capability for inspecting geometry on complete Aircraft, parts and tools covering measurement volumes typically up to 15m of size, system accuracy: U95 distance +/- 0.025mm L/60000 mm.

Bonding / layup room86 sq m/925 sq ft with 3 large work tables, nose radome trolley etc. This room also contains tool cabinets for hot bonders w. heater blankets and miscellaneous. Continuous environmental control, temperature and humidity adjustable with logging of all data. Fresh air supply is available for operators in this room when handling especially hazardous chemicals.

Damage removal / preparation room 84 sq m/900 sq.ft with large work tables. Tool cabinets for general shop tools and tool cabinets for personal tools, one per operator. Four dust extractors are positioned to reach all work tables. Band saw and belt sander is also located here.

Assembly room 153 sq m/1.650sq ft With 2 large work tables, storage capability for parts and containers, rotor blade shelf for up to eight rotor blades with maximum a length of 10m.

Fiber and chemical storage room cabinets with air extraction for safe storage of chemicals. Dedicated cabinet for aerospace adhesives and chemicals with shelf life. Separate large cabinet for storage of rolls with glass fiber, carbon fiber, peel ply, and similar. Mixing cabinet with air extraction and laboratory balance for measuring chemicals.

AIM Carpentry production Capabilities:• Production of trestles for aircraft support during large structural work• Templates in hard wood for knocking up AC parts along with all kind of dummy part production for evaluating new production and for exhibition purpose. • Custom made reusable containers for aircraft parts are also fabricated, along with repair of wood containers.

AIM is today the MRO&U depot level center for emergency/rescue equipment for the RNoAF and perform a:• Industrial sewing (including prototyping, production, maintenance, inspection and repair) to support RNoAF with rescue.• Crew Escape, survival and personal flight safety equipment.

The department carries out Machining, Aerospace Welding, Thermal Spraying, Plating and Heat Treatment.

AIM utilise a wide range of Special Processes to support the repair and overhaul of components. The AIM Electronics department is divided into four workshops (Instrument, Electro, Radio/Crypto and Radar). All workshops work as MRO centres with full tear-down capabilities on a wide spectrum of airborne components and ground installations, such as Norwegian Advanced Surface to Air Missile System (NASAMS) radar system.

AIM also carry out maintenance and field service on the Tactical Air Navigation system (TACAN) navigation system and ground to air communications (radio) and long range ground radars.

Electronics Department Capabilities

The main component categories for the Instrument Workshop are: Airborne Electro-Optical (EO) and Infrared (IR) systems, conventional Aircraft Instruments, Electro Mechanical Instruments, such as: Horizontal Situation Indicator (HSI), Attitude Direction Indicator (ADI), Revolution Per Minute (RPM) indicators, Fuel Quantity and Temperature Indicators. Different kind of gyros, both vertical, directional and standby.

Pneumatic Instruments such as Altimeters, Airspeed Indicators and

Vertical Speed Indicators, and different kind of oxygen components.AIM calibrates manometers, barometers, Pitot/Static testers, Air Data Testers etc.

Our workshop meets the highest laboratory standards for pressure and operates from 0.2-1000 Pounds Per Square Inch Absolute (PSIA) and from 0-12,000 Pounds Per Square Inch Guage (PSIG). The workshop also carries out calibration in the areas of Temperature and Vibration.

The workshop is a MRO center with full tear-down capabilities with a wide spectrum of airborne Electro Mechanical components such as Generators, Starters, Actuators, Fuse Panels, Matrices, Valves, Electrical Panels, Weapon Launchers, Circuit Breaker Panels, Batteries, Lights, etc., including harness assemblies and modification programmes.

The workshop performs electronic Inspection Repair As Necessary (IRAN) and limited depot level repair on the Norwegian Advanced Surface to Air Missile System (NASAMS) radar system. AIM also carries out maintenance and field service on the Tactical Air Navigation system (TACAN) navigation system.

Electro Workshop carries out maintenance, repair and overhaul, on other items, such as, but not limited to:• Main and Emergency Power Unit (EPU) generator repair and test • Canopy actuator repair and testing • Harness repair, modification, and fabrication • Nose wheel steering control • Battery capacitance testing • Launcher repair and testing • Fuel valve motor repair and testing • Matrix repair, modification, and testing bench • Igniter to engine • Test equipment calibration capabilities

This workshop maintains several avionics systems, such as: VHF Omnidirectional Range (VOR)/Instrument Landing System (ILS), Automatic Direction Finder (ADF), Distance Measurement Equipment (DME), TACAN, Homing, Intercom, High Frequency (HF)/Very High Frequency (VHF)/Ultra High Frequency (UHF). Secure Radio with Have Quick II and Controlled Cryptographic Item (CCI) units, Data Link and Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) equipment.

AIM also performs depot level circuit board repairs and develops prototype test fixtures for new communication systems. In addition, the workshop also carries out installation, maintenance and field service of ground to air communication (radio systems and antenna towers). TEMPEST installations in accordance with NATO SDIP 293 and the Norwegian Security Act in air operation centers (CRC, wing ops and radio sites).

The radar workshop maintains airborne (rotary and fixed wing) and ground based radar and Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) systems. In addition, AIM performs field service support for both air and ground based systems. This consists of analysis utilising network analyzers and the repair of Radio Frequency (RF) cables, Waveguides, Couplers etc. IPC certified personnel perform soldering and circuit card repair.

The environmentally controlled radar workshop consists of two facilities:• The Microwave Test Station (MTS) which has been the F-16 radar and the Advanced Identification Friend or Foe (AIFF) depot workshop since the beginning of the ‘80s. The workshop is currently supporting circa 350 aircraft across Europe. • The second facility, located beside the MTS, performs maintenance on a wide range of components for air and ground based radars and Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) equipment.

The Logistics department support all of AIM’s MRO capabilities through effective logistics processes, optimal utilization of technology and motivated personnel with the right competence.

The main task for the Logistics department is to provide all necessary material and logistics services in support of MRO activities. This includes, but are not limited to: purchasing, warehousing, and material accounting, internal transportation, and disposal. The Logistics department focus on quality to ensure that end customers receive the products and services they require.

AIM has a purchasing office with extensive experience in purchasing military and commercial products from national and international suppliers. This also includes import and export handling

processes to and from Norway. In support of AIM’s MRO capability, an advanced Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system currently manages the approximately 20,000 unique items that AIM Norway stock.

AIM has a warehousing office that performs strict receipt and control activities of all material that moves in or out of AIM. Traceability and document control of all aircraft parts together with thorough view and verify inspections, and the technical inspections performed by the production departments are essential to deliver safe and reliable products to AIM’s customers.

AIM’s warehousing facilities have sufficient capacity to manage AIM stocks and consignments stocks for our customers. The warehouse was built to meet civil and military

requirement for parts storage. The floor space is 112,000 sq m /128,400 sg ft with ceiling heights up to 10 m. Within the warehouse parts can be segregated in separate areas including security and export controlled, quarantined or bonded stores if required.

The warehouse has all necessary handling equipment required to operate efficiently and safely. There are automated spares carousels for storing and accessing smaller parts. There is a dedicated Electro Sensitive Device (ESD) receipt area within the warehouse for handling electronic equipment.

The layout of the storage areas allows safe passage and access to all storage locations including mechanical lifting equipment.
